In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. The Olympics have long been the center of attention in the sports world, but perhaps no moment in the history of the games was as poignant as Jesse Owens’ performance in Berlin in 1936. Owens would finish his career with 4 gold medals and become known as "perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history" (as his obituary in the New York Times put it), but nearly 80 years later, it’s the context that has made his performance so memorable. Owens was one of the greatest track athletes in the country in the 1930s, and while he was at Ohio State, he set 3 world records and tied another one within 45 minutes at a Big Ten meet in 1935, but hurdles on the track weren’t as hard to clear as ones he had to deal with away from sports. As a young black man, he had to deal with entrenched racism across the country, from staying in segregated hotels to not being eligible for a sports scholarship, In 1936, World War II was still a few years away, but Adolf Hitler was fully in control of Nazi Germany and hoped to use the Olympics as a showcase of the resurgent German nation. Internationally, Hitler’s Germany was not yet a major concern to the vast majority of people unfamiliar with politics, nor were the domestic policies being carried out by the Nazis, but some still thought the United States should not even participate in the Olympics that year. Of course, those who wanted to boycott the games could not have known what Jesse Owens had in store in Berlin. Given the unabashed racism of Hitler’s regime, Jesse Owens’ performance would end up being a rebuke of sorts to Hitler’s notion of Aryan superiority, and an apocryphal legend has since sprung up that Hitler left the games early to avoid having to shake Owens’ hand. While that reputed snub almost certainly did not occur, one Nazi official did note that Hitler “was highly annoyed by the series of triumphs by the marvelous colored American runner, Jesse Owens. People whose antecedents came from the jungle were primitive, Hitler said with a shrug; their physiques were stronger than those of civilized whites and hence should be excluded from future games." Owens’ performance and the focus over whether Hitler snubbed him also obscured one of the most ironic aspects of Owens’ life and sports career. In fact, while some were asserting that Hitler did actually congratulate Owens, others pointed out that Owens was treated better in Germany than he was back at home, where he had to ride in a freight elevator to a reception in his honor and didn’t hear from President Roosevelt following the games. Owens himself pointed out, "Hitler didn't snub me – it was our president who snubbed me. The president didn't even send me a telegram." Indeed, Owens would find it hard to get by for the rest of his life, much of which was spent trying to capitalize off commemorations of his past exploits by resorting to gimmicks such as racing against horses. The situation led him to bitterly remark, “People say that it was degrading for an Olympic champion to run against a horse, but what was I supposed to do? I had four gold medals, but you can't eat four gold medals."

I didn’t realize that Jesse Owens and his future wife had a child before they were married. Another interesting piece in here was that Jesse’s wife Ruth threatened to sue him if he broke off his relation with her because of a Miss Quincella Nickerson. There are a lot of little gems in this book but it’s best if a reader finds out for herself/ himself. I knew that he was poor and times were hard for African-Americans in the 1930s; but, it is so very difficult for one who did not come up during that era to understand the pain that Jesse and his family went through. Another interesting tidbit before I leave is that during the Olympics the German crowds cheered for him before he went on to when his third gold metal. I highly recommend this book.

By Walter Ferguson This is a wonderful book about a great man: a black man who showed Hitlers racialtheories up for the bunk they were. In the 1936 Olympics, Owens won 4 gold medals, besting even Germany's best "pure aran" runners.Sadly, the book showed the depth of the racial divide here in America, In spite of hisOlympic accomplishments, Owens could not get a good job when he returned. Thesnub by Hitler was one thing. FDR's was something else entirely. This book dealt withall of this very well. It is well worth reading.

The past and present collide as five women work to save the summer camp of their youth in this heartwarming novel.

The Firelight Girls is a story of three generations of women and men whose lives are pieced back together when they return to the place that made them who they are, a summer camp on Lake Wenatchee in Washington State. Seventy-year-old Ethel is directionless after losing Haddie, the love of her life, to a heart-attack. Camp was where they met way back in the 50s, and they made their home down the shore from camp. Once a vibrant, capable camp counselor, Shannon has just had her heart shattered by the loss of her job. Ruby, estranged from Ethel for fifty years, has been living with a secret for almost as long. Finally, there is Amber, a homeless teen who has been hiding out in one of the cabins, hoping that no one at school will catch on to her plight. When they learn that the camp's future is in jeopardy, Ethel and Ruby send out the alarm, reuniting campers and staff to save the place that was so instrumental in all of their lives. A story of enduring friendship and romance, The Firelight Girls is about what has been lost and what can still be created.

The love story between Ruby and Ethel was also fascinating to me. I am always intrigued by stories going back 50 or 60 years that involve differing types of love and how society views them. More importantly how the people who love feel and process these emotions within their society. The backdrop of the book also drew me in because I love camping and the outdoors. The tranquility of the setting was the perfect setting for this great story.

Women helping women By Cathe When Camp Firelight is closed and about to be put up for sale, several women of different generations come together one last time to say farewell to their beloved camp--and try to work through things going on in their lives and things that happened in their pasts.I liked the idea of this book -- I have fond camp memories myself, though never experienced anything as life-changing as this camp seemed to be for the girls who attended. I also liked that the author seemed to send the message that women need to stick together and support each other. Unfortunately, the story seemed to be missing something for me. Maybe because of the number of characters or maybe it was just the writing but I never felt like I fully got into the mind of any of the characters enough and never really emotionally bonded with the story. It was a fast read but not wholly satisfying.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. “…We Are Our Choices …Every Path Had a Price and Every Path Had a Payoff …” By delicateflower152 Many readers will find “The Firelight Girls” to be a good choice for summertime reading - unfortunately, it is not available until October. Kaya McLaren’s novel is one of friendship, of love lost and love rediscovered, of forgiveness and reconciliation, and of hope that the future will be better.Located on the shore of Lake Wenatchee, the Firelight Girls campground, Camp Firelight, is in danger of closing. Deterioration of the physical plant, a dry well and the cost of drilling its replacement, and the aging of long-time director Ethel Gossman make the outlook for the future bleak. Her invitation to camp alumni results in three of the women who were past campers or counselors returning for one final gathering. Unknown to these four women, a runaway teen Amber Hill is living in one of the cabins. Amber left her mother’s home after one of that woman’s paramours attempted to molest Amber. As “The Firelight Girls” develops, each of the four women as well as Amber must deal with the past. Each one must reconcile their dreams with their reality, moving forward with hope and fulfilling personal needs through actions each one chooses.Love, both romantic and familial, plays a key function throughout the novel. Ethel’s long-time partner Haddie is dead and Ethel believes she will face her future alone. Having hidden their relationship for over sixty years, Ethel keeps Haddie close by “humanizing” – drawing a face on and adding “hair” to the urn - the urn containing Haddie’s ashes. The parallel between Haddie’s death and the impending closure of Camp Firelight is evident. Only when she opens her heart and home to Amber, does Ethel gain the child she was never able to have with Haddie. Ruby, a contemporary of Ethel and Haddie, lost her true love when he died in Korea and had her marriage to another annulled. A presumed betrayal causes a breach in Ethel and Ruby’s friendship. Laura, a former camper/counselor, believes she and her husband have grown apart and questions what resulted in indifference when the marriage was once so passionate. Shannon, another former camper/counselor, has never been enthusiastic about teaching and is seeking a future about which she is passionate.Moving the story from the past to the present and from one decade to another, Kaya McLaren is able to highlight different social attitudes and cultural changes. Ethel and Haddie kept their relationship and sexual preference hidden. When the camp’s board directs Ethel to fire a counselor who is also a lesbian, she does so. Yet, Ethel questions whether her verbally stating to that woman that she “loves” her is really love. “…maybe love didn’t count unless it was bigger than one’s fear for oneself…” When her true love dies in Korea and at the urging of her parents, Ruby marries another man and, after having the marriage annulled, lives her life alone. Only in her seventies, does she find and embrace love with Walt, a neighbor of the camp. Both Shannon and Laura portray the generations following those of Ethel and Ruby. While they have greater choices and more options available to them, both women follow paths representative of their era and rediscover their true natures during the present time.“The Firelight Girls” also deals with deep friendships and with the hurt and betrayal felt when others act in a manner inconsistent with those purported friendships. The healing power of forgiveness allows each of the women to gain a greater understanding of the actions one of the others had taken and to rekindle the friendships they once knew. Characters and their development are not particularly deep, but they are interesting and likeable. Amber’s story offers the most potential for development, but seems to be more of an adjunct to the primary focus of the novel. The progression of the story is expected and the outcome of each character’s dilemma is easy to anticipate. Language in the novel is appropriate to the situation. Passages that may be romantic or intimate, either between Ethel and Maddie or between Laura and Steve, are sensual but not extremely explicit. If you are looking for an enjoyable, easy-to-read novel and when the book is available, you might want to pick up a copy of “The Firelight Girls”.

Jenny Long's young life tipped into chaos at age 12 with the death of her mother. By 18, she was a high school dropout, pregnant, and married to a convicted felon. But with the birth of her son Conner, Jenny vowed to end the vicious cycle and make a better life for her new family. Two years later, Jenny's second son, Cayden, was born with spastic cerebral palsy. Undaunted by the doctor's recommendation to place her disabled son in an assisted living facility, she made the courageous decision to raise him at home. Similarly unfazed by Cayden's disability, older brother Conner developed a loving relationship with Cayden, engaging and respecting him with a grace and determination that belied his young age. At age 7, Conner, determined to share his love of athletics with Cayden, entered the Nashville Kids Triathlon, pushing and pulling Cayden every step of the course. The two brothers crossed the finish line together, and their thrilling and emotional race captured the hearts of millions and earned both boys Sports Illustrated Kids's SportsKids of the Year award. Expect a Miracle is the inspirational story of Jenny's life and how she raised two extraordinary boys against all odds - brothers whose love and determination affirmed Jenny's deeply held faith that everyone, no matter their challenges, can find their miracle.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A triumphal story of brotherly love By N. B. Kennedy In 2012, Connor and Cayden Long were named Sports Illustrated's SportsKids of the Year. I remember seeing the photo of the brothers at the finish line of the Nashville Kids Triathlon. The amazing thing about this otherwise ordinary race is that Cayden is a child stricken with cerebral palsy and his brother Connor, just 7-years-old at the time, pushed, pulled and pedaled his brother through the four-mile challenge, running, swimming and biking for two.Jenny Long's book fills in the backstory to this inspiring photo. Where the world might have seen a sanitized picture of victory, Jenny lets the world know that the public spotlight didn't shed light on the whole story. Jenny's life exploded when at 12-years-old, she loses her mother to cancer, yanking out the only foundation Jenny had ever known. Forced by the courts to live with her alcoholic and neglectful father, Jenny's life descends into chaos as she defies the kind of adult authority that she sees as having betrayed her. She drops out of school, parties, and beds the wrong guys until she finds herself in an abusive marriage to a convicted and periodically incarcerated felon, pregnant and eventually a single parent. When Jenny meets a quiet and reserved man at work, the two form a bond that leads to marriage and children. When at just a few months old, Cayden is diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy and they are advised to place him in a home, the two make a crucial decision. "We are a family," Jeff says. "A family doesn't abandon one of their own." This decision leads to the triumphal photo of Cayden and Connor competing in the triathlon. As Jenny tells the reader, Connor was always determined to share the bonding experience of sports with his brother, no matter his disabilities. The book is a straightforward telling of Jenny's life. It's a brief and easy read. I'm pretty much a "just the facts, ma'am" kind of person, but I found myself in tears reading the final chapters about the brothers persevering through the triathlon. It was tears of a different sort when Jenny reveals the outcome of her marriage, though. "You should know that about 80 percent of couples that take care of a child like Cayden end up getting a divorce," the doctor tells them early on. Jenny Long has experienced both miracles and tragedies in her life, and readers will appreciate the wisdom she has gained through both.

Jenny Long's EXPECT A MIRACLE is a great reminder that nothing is impossible with faith in action By Cyrus Webb This is one of those books you keep close by for those days you are feeling as though you can't go on and all hope is lost. What Jenny Long shares in EXPECT A MIRACLE is really a testament not only to the triumph of the human spirit but what one can do if they don't give up.We are able to find out about her sons and how their love for one another helped to make what seemed impossible a possibility, but we are also able to discover along the way where Jenny developed her own strength, whether it was dealing with her mother during her illness or a toxic relationship that could have destroyed us. Everything about this book says "You can make it if you don't give up." The reader just has to believe it and look at their own life and realize that nothing is too difficult if you realize that everyday is a blessing and you can expect your miracle to come in the most unlikely of ways.

Touching book By Gail Rodgers This book doesn't take long to read, but it is a touching book of a young lady that messes up her own life and then sees the healing of herself and her family through her two oldest boys Conner and Cayden. The first son was a baby like very mother expects and wants while the next child was born with spastic cerebral palsy. The older brother didn't care of ask what was wrong with his brother. All he cared about was that he had a brother and would search out ways Cayden could be part of the activities either as a family or the two of them with brothers. He especially wanted to participate in a sport with Cayden, but what would wheel chair bound Cayden be able to do with his physically perfect brother Conner? Then one day Conner sees an ad for a Kids Triathlon.......

Natalie Alexander (narrator, author/writer) moved to a different town in hopes of escaping her past. It’s not long & she soon meets Nicholas Nick Norton (Jim’s nephew, HS English teacher)Fast forward could there be a romance blooming? There was an explosion at the HS. It was found out students had mixed the wrong chemicals together, not a bomb.Nick was rushed to St. Elizabeth Hospital (Belleville) in critical condition.Dr. Swenson gave Natalie & Mrs. John (Aunt) the update news about him.Dr. Givens also did surgery on him. The recovery was well past 4 weeks.Nathalie was working diligently on her next novel. She also had a book signing in Oklahoma. Will Natalie make peace with her past? What will become of Natalie & Nick?I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A delightful very well written romance book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great romantic movie, or mini TV series. Not something I normally read but I really enjoyed it. That said I will still rate it at 5 stars.Thank you for the free Goodreads; Making Connections; Author; PDF bookTony Parsons MSW (Washburn)

It's a sweet story about love, forgiveness, and moving beyond our past into what God has in store for us. It's so nice to read a clean love story that also focuses on God's love for us and how He orchestrates circumstances to bring us to Himself. I also enjoyed the reminder of how powerful the community of God's people can be as we serve one another, both within and without the church. I highly recommend it!

I particularly enjoyed how the main character was an author, because I was able to relate to her well. She was also very self conscious, which seemed to make her a more realistic character when compared to other traditional romance heroines.Michelle Connell's writing is clear and crisp. Her words flow freely, and she incorporates great descriptions into her writing. As I was reading this novel, I couldn't help but turn the page over and over again. I am a sucker for romance, but I think that even those who aren't as passionate about romance would enjoy this novel. Her writing is artistic, and I could tell that she was trying to paint a picture with her words instead of just merely telling a story. When I was reading her novel, I felt as though I were analyzing a beautiful oil painting in a well known museum. She captured the flaws of the human experience well, while also incorporating hope and love, which are both things that humans tend to search for on a daily basis. Because of these aspects, I would relate her novel to the genre of "literary fiction" instead of just romance since this novel is strong enough to stand on its own. Her novel not only reads like a great beach read, but it reads like something that you would want to recommend to your friends. I didn't find her writing to be immature at all, which I sometimes find with romance novels, and I highly recommend her work for all age ranges, since it is not too mature for younger readers. If you are looking for a light, fun romance that is filled with love and hope, then I highly suggest "Cookie Encounter". It is short and sweet, a novel that you won't want to miss. It would be great for those who have busy lives and need a shorter novel to conquer.

In 1966, as the champions of the AFL and NFL prepared to play each other for the first time, Kansas City Chiefs–owner Lamar Hunt wrote the following to Commissioner Pete Rozelle: “I have kiddingly called [the championship game] the Super Bowl, which obviously can be improved upon.”How wrong Hunt was. After the AFL merged with the NFL, “Super Bowl” became the official title of the NFL championship game in the years to come. In celebration of the first fifty Super Bowls, David Fischer traces its evolution from a game that didn’t sell out in 1967 to a worldwide phenomenon with a viewership in the hundreds of millions.Packed with dozens of arresting full-color illustrations—highlighting game action, memorabilia, and players and coaches—The Super Bowl includes sections on the greatest games, individual performances, and game-changing plays. Fischer explores unique Super Bowl angles as well, including a ranking of “The Best Who Never Won” and “The Best Who Never Lost,” along with perspectives from players and fans. He covers the action, the heroes, the strategy, and the records from half a century of championship football. This celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of America’s premier sporting event is an essential addition to any football fan’s collection.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team.Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Review “Fischer break[s] his narrative into chapters and makes subjective calls along the way. Since sports fans love a good argument, there’s nothing wrong with that approach and the author supports his opinions with many appropriate game details. [T]he sidebars — for instance, ‘The Best Who Never Lost,’ ‘The Best Who Never Won’ — offer a slew of interesting angles and insights.’ --Newsday

About the Author David Fischer has written for the New York Times and Sports Illustrated for Kids, and has worked at Sports Illustrated, National Sports Daily, and NBC Sports. He is the author of Yankee Stadium Scrapbook: A Lifetime of Memories and Derek Jeter #2: Thanks for the Memories; coauthor of Sports of the Times and Greatest Sports Rivalries; and editor of Facing Mariano Rivera.

A must for any serious pro football fan By Matthew Kohut This book is a great reminder of the classic teams that have defined football history in the modern era, from the Green Bay Packers of the mid-1960s right up to the New England Patriots of today. The game summaries bring you right back into the action, and the sidebars such as "The Best Who Never Lost" and "Pantheon of Heroes" put the stars' achievements in perspective. The photographs are fantastic. A must for any serious football fan.

And the inclusion of cultural references and stories about the half time shows made it an interesting read for me too, and I know nothing about football. Would definitely recommend!!

By SleepsByTheVent David Fischer writes a great history of the Super Bowl in this book with awesome pictures and amazing stats from the greatest annual sporting event. He shows how some made it look so easy (Tom Brady with 13 TDs in 6 SBs) while others couldn't get out of their own way (Rich Gannon throwing 5 INTs in one game). A nice foreword by SB Legend Franco Harris is a hard act to follow but Fischer is able to hold the reader's interest for another 175+ pages. He weaves in stories around the games such as what was going on in the world that year as well as who was playing the halftime show. Very informative and nostalgic for me as I have seen about 40 of the 50 games.

Meet Julie Chavan. Julie is trying to rescue the legendary New York publishing house West 57. Everyone else in her life is trying to rescue Julie - her mother, her ex-fiancé, her ex-best friend, and even the ghost of her dead father. They all think they know what Julie needs. What Julie actually needs is a big best seller for West 57, but her debut of the year's hottest book is spinning wildly out of control.

Julie is dealing with a dead con artist, an oversexed London agent, an irresistible young book editor, a drunk author spouting bawdy limericks, and a flying Chihuahua. The smart thing would be to say good-bye to West 57. Julie's Hollywood mother wants her in Los Angeles, and there's nothing keeping Julie in New York - nothing except her whole life. But before Julie can decide where she's going, she has to decide what she really wants. Exuberantly funny and emotionally rich, West 57 will make you laugh and cry about love, friendships, and the big choices in life.

Imagine being able to talk with your father’s ghost, get his take on things and help running a publishing house that he left to you. But, Julie Chavan is anything but usual. She is headstrong, impulsive and often finds herself in situations that she wishes she could avoid. Like owning West 57th the publishing house that is how her own responsibility and the thought that it might go under is something she does not relish. Debts owed. Only one book being launched with and author that is anything but conventional or even talented. King Royal is brash, drunk, enjoys saying outrageous things in public, reciting limericks and short poems and often finds himself in wild and strange circumstances. But, just what is behind King Royal’s behavior and what secrets does he know about Sonny, Julie’s father that could change everything?Owning this company is just one of the daily troubles dealing with her overbearing mother Cherie who wants to orchestrate and run her life hoping she will chuck it all, marry her ex-finance, deal with her wild best brined and find her way to Los Angeles and running her production company. Everyone thinks that they know what Julie should be doing or want. But, what about Julie? Some of the interactions are quite hilarious and each time King Royal comes into the act things really heat up. The book signing and book launch was planned out but no one would expect several patrons to bring little dogs, have them attack King Royal and what happens to him and the end result is well you have to read it for yourself to appreciate the hilarity and the humor created by the author. But, West 57th means a lot of Julie and to her editor Garrett. Here is where things get really quite dicey as we learn about her true feelings for him, what would happen if she sells out and the fact that she and Thad her old boyfriend have got it back on.That’s not all there is more as we learn that an FBI agent named Brown is following Julie and when they finally connect more havoc ensues as King Royal disappears, claims that his life is in danger, a reporter named Duggan who wants to scoop on the whole Irving Wolfe death and disappearance is murdered and this is just the beginning. What does Julie know about Wolfe’s last night on the boat? Did he commit suicide? Was her father on the boat? What is the secret that King Royal has and why does he want more money to keep quiet? Best friends and drinking partner has a plan that would force Julie to remain where she is and go into a venture with her. Can they pull off owning both a publishing house, music division, gaming division and much more? Can they work together without driving each other crazy? Bree is a true friend in most respects except when she is in need of a man and does not care who he belongs too. Added in Cherie enlightens Julie on an impromptu visit about her father, their relationship and why she left. Love, honor, betrayal, revenge, friendship and relationships and one girl’s need to find herself and where she really belongs, West 57th is chocked will with drama, laughter and what this author does best MURDER! When it is revealed that Irving Wolfe is really dead and has been murdered and that Nick Duggan the reporter was shot as was Irving what is the common denominator: You guessed it I won’t give it away!Conversations between Bree and Julie are quite humorous yet sad in some respects as both are searching for new horizons and each going about it in her own way yet in some ways destructive. With Cherie hoping that Julie and Thad will tie the knot. Julie considers her mother’s offer to move to California as Bree comes up with a business venture that just might change it all. But, can Julie honestly find happiness with Thad? Can Thad stay faithful and what is his real motive for wanting Julie to come to California? When is she going to let go of Cherie’s apron strings and finally stand up to her and on her own? Overpowering, over indulging her own whims and a mother who cares but mainly for what she wants, will she ever respect Julie for who she is and stop trying to orchestrate and plan her life?King Royal seems to be at the center of it all and as you get to know him you realize that he is more like an albatross around the neck of Julie’s company even though he might just bring it into the black and out of the red. If he goes missing or is dead sales might go up sky high. When FBI agent Brown goes to his hotel to find him why is he missing? Just who killed Irving Wolfe? Who else was on that boat and why did Walter Pope want to kill King Royal at his book launching?Captain Absolute was her father’s project, which she was surprised to know. Thinking the idea belonged to Bree. Bree was his agent and the truth behind the funding is what changed it all and caused the deaths of the reporter and Wolfe. Learning that her father and Wolfe were partners in West 57th changed the way Julie looked at everything which is why her mother wanted to walk away and sell to Helmet Gernestier and allow the company to continue on. With the FBI agent hot on her trail, questions being asked and wanting to know who killed the reporter and evidence brought to light as to what might have happened on the boat, Julie begins to doubt her father’s innocence and that sends a huge dark cloud over her. But, even more she seems to be pushing everyone away and being with Thad just might be toxic.King Royal winds up disappearing and when they finally find him you won’t believe in what state or where.Julie cannot face her feelings for Garrett and a simple misunderstanding sends her back to Thad and going along with what her mother wants for her instead of looking long and hard at what she needs. But, when Garrett puts it too her straight and solid she does not want to hear it: “Everyone is running your life except you.” Think about that Julie! Just what happens to reveal whom the killer really is but first she wants to revisit Libby and hopefully rekindle her fame with her newest book after twenty years called Woodham Road. But, will anyone want to publish it at West 57th? What about forming an alliance with Bree and not moving to California? Will she sell it? Will she move? Will Julie face herself in the mirror and realize what is right in front of her?An ending that is explosive, filled with a surprise and twist you will never see coming as author B.N. Freeman reveals the truth behind Captain Absolute, the funding and just his own special brand of intrigue and murder. This book is a definite romance, mystery/murder thriller with humor, sarcasm, hilarity and the author’s special brand of writing. Let’s hope that Bree, Julie and Garrett come back to let readers know what’s next for them!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Didn't give the people what they want. By Guyzen I was really looking forward to this book and the content was overwhelming. Like most memoirs, the author wrote about his life and how he got to where he is now. There are a few opinions interjected into parts of the book, but nothing I would consider flagrant. Jalen uses this book to set the record straight on a few of the controversial events that he has been involved in.For someone who has so many issues with the NCAA (most involving money) he has few too few suggestions to fix it. I believe he gives two potential fixes as examples.Jalen had lived an interesting life, but there's not a lot here that is new, especially those who listen to his podcast. There's barely enough here for a book, but at least Jalen can say he is an author now.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Love Jalen Rose By Steven T. Wood Love Jalen Rose, his podcasts, on-air stuff, etc. This book was all stories that we've heard on the podcast, and very rarely did the stories go deeper than what was already public knowledge. When we got to the Knicks chapter I was almost salivating at the stories that were to come, and then there was nothing. A quick read, but be prepared to not get much more insight than you already have if you're a fan of Jalen.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Got what I paid for, yo By Benoit Lelievre This book is pure candy for basketball nerds like me. I cannot recommend the audiobook version enough, which is narrated by Jalen himself, which gives it a similar edge than listening to the Jalen and Jacoby podcast. I don't want to make a bad pun here, but the book was everything I wanted it to be: a complete, exhaustive breakdown of what it is to be an NBA player, from birth to retirement. It's what Jalen provides and Good God, didn't he do it with absolute style or what? There's an editorial aspect to this book I really liked also, which contains quips about the NCAA and infamous head coach Larry Brown among others, as well as segments on Jalen's relationship to his father Jimmy Walker and the freakin' SCHOOL he created, the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. How is that for winning the game of life and changing the world? Guy FOUNDED A SCHOOL. IN DETROIT. Seriously, if you love basketball about 10% as much as I do, you'll love this book. It's about as fun and enlightening as celebrity memoirs can get.

This is not just the story of a hockey player, it is an account of someone getting through great adversity. If you happen to be a sports fan, BJ's hockey history is a bonus. If you have ever been through some hard times you will be able to relate to the challenges that the journey brings. The book takes you through the journey in a dynamic and entertaining fashion while articulating some of the really hard topics that come with a tragedy like this. It is hard to call a story like this entertaining, but it is an easy read which will draw you in. I laughed a few times reading it and got a lump in my throat a few times too.I recommend this book to both sports fans and anyone touched by circumstances that stack the odds against you. It will help you realize there are challenges on the journey and provide you hope and inspiration.

McPherson sustained during a professional hockey game. Every athlete knows the risks involved in playing sports - this book includes the impact on everyone around the athlete. B.J. faced his injury like most athletes would - starting with anger, fear, frustration, sometimes humor and finally acceptance. Now B.J. is a commentator for the San Diego Gulls - hockey will always be his passion, despite the risks. The book is short (100 pages) and well-written. Some colorful language may not be appropriate for young readers. Overall, I love the passion that comes through the pages.

With its witty pictures and "remarks", I cannot remember when my last good laugh was. Then, add more sarcasm, I would rolling all over the floor. The jokes are not all about basketball, just the funny pics of basketball players are used. I really enjoyed this book.

Great guide for anyone interested in getting into metal detecting By Jerry Mountjoy I saw some people scouring an area with metal detectors and mentioned to a friend that it might be fun. She got me this book by Vince Migliore that explains how to go about "detecting." The book covers all aspects of the metal detecting, including:• Methodologies• Tools, both needed and nice-to-have• How to locate potential search sites• How to locate metal detector clubs and organizations• Many, many resources that are available.Regarding methodologies, Migliore begins the story describing a typical outing: identifying a site, gathering tools he will and might need, joining a fellow detector at the site, laying out a search plan, searching, finding, preserving, etc., etc. In other words, he begins by giving the reader a feel for what detecting is like on a typical day. He covers other “detecting” methodologies in similar fashion.Regarding tools, he gives a solid description of the types of tools needed, along with an analysis of the different products available and a breakdown as to price. He then offers suggestions on how to choose your first metal detector based on your needs, preferences, etc.He talks about search site methodologies I wouldn’t have thought of, including use of old maps to find areas that at one time had lots of people traffic. He covers site identification thoroughly.Likewise, he covers clubs, organizations, equipment manufacturers and other resources thoroughly. A 2015 publication, the book is very current. Although I haven’t rushed out to buy my first metal detector and join a club, it’s definitely gotten my interest piqued. I think it’s a great introduction to metal detecting.

What a difference from what I thought metal detecting was about... and the new ability of the detectors to be able to discern between just any metal and true valuables, well - it helped in thinking about what detector I should buy.It was interesting to think through not only the science of metal detecting but the value of researching before you go, knowing what you are looking for and helping to really think through the best places to go metal detecting. The book was easy to read and provided topics that allowed for a deeper dive into particular aspects of the 'art and science' of metal detecting.Wow... a book that actually lives up to its name....

I recently ordered the book to use as a guide in teaching my grandson about metal detecting. It is easy to read and chock-full of useful information - an excellent resource already. I'm so excited to get started and look forward to hours of exploring.
