Mixing a dash of Dallas society, a pinch of Janet Evanovich, and murder in the land of big hair, Blue Blood is the first installment in award-winning author Susan McBride's sassy Debutante Dropout mystery series.

To the dismay of her high-society mother, Cissy, Dallas heiress Andy Kendricks wants no part of the Junior League life - opting instead for a job as a website designer and a passel of unpedigreed pals. Now her good friend, Molly O'Brien, is in bad trouble, accused of killing her boss at the local restaurant Jugs.

Though no proper deb would ever set foot in such a sleazy dive, Andy's soon slipping into skintight hot pants and a stuffed triple D bra to gain employment there and somehow help clear Molly's name.

But Andy's undercover lark soon brings her into too-close contact with all manner of dangerous adversaries - including a shady TV preacher, a fanatical Mothers Against Porn activist, and a killer who is none too keen on meddling rich girls.

29 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Fun read but unchallenging as a mystery By Maddi Hausmann _Blue Blood_ is an amusing little story with an interesting narrator. Andy (Andrea) Kendricks is an upper-crust Texas society girl, who decides that charity events, fund-raising, and hunt balls are not her thing, and declines to "come out" despite her mother's plans. Now she's living the "normal" life, despite her mom's attempts to pull her back into the society whirl.Andy's mom, Cissy Blevins Kendricks, is formidable; doing everything she can to introduce Andy to the "right" people, especially the right husband. The book begins with Andy in a restaurant with her mother and yet another prospective beau; the evening was presented to Andy as a "night out with just us girls." Andy is unstoppable in her own way: she will smile at her mother but do things her own way and in her own good time. Then Andy hears from her best friend from her prep school days. Molly never fit in either, being the "scholarship girl" from a series of foster homes. The girls went off to art college together but Molly ran off to Paris with her boyfriend, got pregnant, and was dumped. Ten years later, Molly is calling Andy for help: she is accused of murdering her boss at the restaurant where she worked as a waitress. The restaurant is a hillbilly version of Hooters, and the boss not only hit on the staff frequently, he seemed to have plenty of enemies. But the police are convinced that they have arrested the culprit and Molly is denied bail, leaving Andy to take care of Molly's young son.Andy isn't an investigator, she's a website designer. She asks her mother to hire a lawyer for Molly, and mother reluctantly complies. But the young man doesn't believe Molly is innocent, and doesn't seem to be trying very hard to help her. So it's up to Andy to find the real killer.I enjoyed McBride's descriptions and characters more than the underlying mystery. Andy is haunted by her father's untimely death (right before her planned debut), and clearly has more in common with him than her society mother. But there weren't enough possible killers in the book to mislead me, the mark of a good whodunnit. I was able to identify the guilty party far sooner than I should have because one clue was far too obvious. The bad guys were coarsely drawn, with little nuance or any redeeming features. And too many intermediate clues were clear to the reader well before Andy picked up on them. I also felt McBride didn't convince me of Andy's expertise in her career as a website designer. Someone comfortable with digital photography and HTML code (or even MS FrontPage) should have had more computer skills and savvy than Andy ever demonstrated. The book could have worked just as well with Andy as a freelance writer or an accountant without changing anything else in the plot! This a good, mindless, fun read, suitable for beaches or airplanes. But as a mystery it is lacking. mad-haus 1 March 2004

Snicker out loud By booksforabuck Drop-out debutante Andrea "Andy" Kendrick receives a plea out of the blue from her former best friend from prep school. Molly O'Brien, whom Andy's high-society mother, Cissy, calls "that scholarship girl," has been arrested for murder and she wants Andy to take care of her little boy.Though Andy hasn't heard from Molly in ten years, she jumps into the fray--rescuing the boy (and dumping him at her mother's Highland Park mansion, much to Cissy's dismay). She just knows Molly could never possibly kill someone under any circumstances, and she is determined to prove her friend's innocence. With the help of Molly's inexperienced (but cute) lawyer, Andy delves into the mystery, going so far as to get herself hired at the "Hooters"-type restaurant where the murder took place, and where Molly worked as a waitress. In purple hot pants and a stuffed bra, she gathers the evidence against the suspects, which include a randy televangelist, a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, a rabid activist who regularly pickets the restaurant, a mysterious silent partner, and a host of sexually harassed waitresses. This is a cute read, with an amusingly eccentric cast of characters. Though I felt Andy was inexcusably reckless at times (like when she barges into a motel room where she knows the possible murderer is having illicit sex), I couldn't help cheering for her. And though the humor felt a bit forced in places, I did snicker out loud several times. This is a must-read for anyone within or on the fringes of Dallas high society. The author certainly nails that world.

Especially if we get into trouble! The lengths Andy goes to for her friend Molly is incredible and more fun than I can say without giving the plot away. Andy's mother is a hoot, and I hope she appears in each sequel. Don't miss this! BLUE BLOOD will keep you turning pages with a smile on your face. I read this in two sittings, that's how much I loved it!

You can pick it up and enjoy it in bits between appointments or become totally engrossed and read from cover to cover as I did! I expected the short stories, but was pleasantly surprised to find a related scripture and prayer at the end of each one. Very nicely done inspirational book! In modern baseball history, only one team not named the New York Yankees has ever won three consecutive World Series. That team was the Oakland Athletics, who captured major league baseball’s crown each year from 1972 through 1974. Led by such superstars as future Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter and Rollie Fingers, in the final years before free agency and the movement of players
from one team to another forever changed the game, the Athletics were a largely homegrown aggregate of players who joined the organization when the team called Kansas City its home, developed as teammates in the minor leagues, and came of age together in Oakland. But it was the way in which they did it that immortalized those teams. For if the story of the Oakland Athletics’ championships is that of one of baseball’s greatest teams, it’s also the story of enigmatic owner Charles O. Finley and how those players succeeded in spite of Finley’s larger-than-life persona and meddlesome ways. Indeed, before the Yankees’ George Steinbrenner, there was Charles Oscar Finley, of the Athletics. Featuring the contributions of 46 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), Mustaches and Mayhem: Charlie O’s Three-Time Champions shares the stories of each of the roster players on each of the A’s championship teams, in addition to the managers, coaches, Finley himself, the team’s radio announcer, and even Charlie O, the mule, Finley’s legendary mascot. Summaries of each spring training and World Series, too, will complete the tale of one of baseball’s most colorful and successful teams. Biographies included: Charlie Finley, Charlie O (the Mule), Sal Bando, Vida Blue, Bert Campaneris, Rollie Fingers, Dick Green, Dave Hamilton, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Ted Kubiak, Blue Moon Odom, Joe Rudi, Gene Tenace, Jerry Adair (coach), Matty Alou, Brant Alyea, Dwain Anderson, Curt Blefary, Bob Brooks, Larry Brown, Ollie Brown, Orlando Cepeda, Ron Clark, Tim Cullen, Dave Duncan, Mike Epstein, Adrian Garrett, Larry Haney, Mike Hegan, George Hendrick, Ken Holtzman, Joe Horlen, Vern Hoscheit (coach), Mike Kilkenny, Darold Knowles, Allan Lewis, Bob Locker, Angel Mangual, Gonzalo Marques, Marty Martinez, Dal Maxvill, Denny McLain, Bill McNulty, Don Mincher, Irv Noren (coach), Bill Posedel (coach), Jim Roland, Diego Segui, Art Shamsky, Don Shaw, Bill Voss, Gary Waslewski, Dick Williams, Glenn Abbott, Jesus Alou, Mike Andrews, Pat Bourque, Rico Carty, Billy Conigliaro, Vic Davalillo, Chuck Dobson, Ray Fosse, Rob Gardner, Phil Garner, Tim Hosley, Deron Johnson, Jay Johnstone, Paul Lindblad, Rich McKinney, Jose Morales, Bill North, Horacio Pina, Wes Stock (coach), Manny Trillo, Alvin Dark, John Donaldson, Bob Hofman, Jim Holt, Leon Hooten, Bill Parsons, Gaylen Pitts, Champ Summers, Claudell Washington, Herb Washington, Bob Winkles, and Monte Moore (broadcaster). The former professional surfer tells his own story On the surface he was Tom Carroll, dreamer, brilliant surfer, Australian sports hero, fitness fanatic, businessman, family man, and big wave charger. But inside turned the terrible wheel of drug addiction—part family curse, part legacy of the footloose surf culture he’d done so much to legitimize. Tom’s family and friends struggled with him, kept his secrets, and looked on in anger and fear as the wheel began to grind him down. Then a window opened, but getting through it made charging Pipeline look like a piece of cake. This is the story of an unlikely moral education: of humility, family, damage, brotherhood, youth, stupidity, glory, single-mindedness, and surrender, and about the feeling of water moving under a surfboard, how it can bind past to present and make sense of lives.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Honest and Powerful By Matt Warshaw Two-time world surfing champion Tom Carroll was not only the best surfer in waves of consequence, he was the guy every surfer wanted to be friends with: funny, matey, solid. The Australian PM spoke at Tom's pro surfing retirement dinner in 1993. At which point the Champ glided into a new life with his beautiful wife and daughters, some money in the bank, still surfing up a storm, the perfect post-competitive career. Except he was a long-time habitual drug user, and would eventually ramp things up to full-blown meth addiction. Nick Carroll, Tom's older brother, long regarded as the best surf writer in the business, while covering for Tom over the years, was himself in the dark about the extent of the problem. In TC, Tom and Nick together, with total candor, and a leavening dose of humor, tell the whole story: all the incredible triumph and tragedy and anger and redemption. Surfing threads the book together. But really it's about family, and self-knowledge, and learning to live a balanced life. Always gripping. Never preachy. A great book.

I loved how honest the book was, exposing the best and the worst sides of this pioneer in making surfing what it is today.Even if you didn't grow up on a beach, it's an interesting story of the pitfalls of becoming a superstar very young. Before this, all I knew about him was that he seemed to have it made.Very authentic too...

It's written in an unusual style as it alternates between the first and third person. In the third person it's written by his brother, Nick. This gets a little bit confusing at times, especially when Nick is talking about himself; sometimes it took me a little while to work out who it was talking about. Thankfully the publishers use a different font to alternate between the narrators so that helps. The surfing part is an enjoyable read. Focussed more on his Newport days than the pro tour, so there are only snippets of that side of thing, usually addressed by Nick at the start of each chapter in terms of results for the year. I would have enjoyed a bit more information about the various surfers he competed against and the ins and outs of 80s competitive surfing. This was very similar to the book about Gary Elkerton ('Kong'). There surely must be a great book out there waiting to be written describing the surfing pro tour era before Kelly Slater came along. I suspect it's probably taboo because basically every pro (it seems) was on coke at the time. It's certainly alluded to, though maybe the Christian pro surfers did not?The second half of the book describes Tom's fairly rapid descent into drug addiction, starting with cocaine and ending with Ice and Tom in a very bad way. It's actually quite harrowing reading. It made me cringe to read every step that took him deeper and deeper into addiction. It's not really a surf book by this stage. The book made me look a bit into my own personal life. I don't use drugs but at times we all lie to ourselves and hide things from others. I drew some uncomfortable parallels about dishonesty as well as self centeredness. There were some things missing, for example they say that no-one in the surfing media ever reported about drug use in general and Tom Carroll in particular. This is not quite true. There were various stories in the 80s alluding to Mark Occhilupo being on coke, and there was even a letter to the editor in Surfer magazine accusing Carroll of ingesting 'a sugary brown substance' at the pipe masters (if I remember the wording correctly). To which the editor more or less said 'unless you have evidence, we don't believe you'. Of course years later Andy Irons really did overdose and die. It's not a judgemental book and nor is it a self-help book.It proved (once again) that famous people have all the weaknesses that we all have.It is an enjoyable book and one that I will probably read again. Usually I don't go for the whole sportsman biography type book but as a surfer who grew up with posters of Tom Carroll on my wall, I really enjoyed it.
