It’s a different kind of Christmas for Tom Shepherd when he embarks upon an affair with Ellie and she leads him into a world of fiction where he learns to write from the heart. When his mistress and his wife both want to cook him Christmas lunch Tom faces a dilemma. Not wanting to disappoint, he wonders if he could possibly eat two Christmas dinners in one day. Tom smiles as he remembers the TV sitcom, “The Vicar of Dibley”. Dawn French had been too loyal to let any of her parishioners down and although she’d struggled she still managed to eat her way through three Christmas lunches. So, Tom decides, I’ll be doing the same – just trying to keep everyone happy. As Tom writes his autobiography and faces some dark demons from his past he recalls his many relationships over the years which is a massive turning point in his life. This re-awakening makes him question his character and he decides it’s high time to man up and face his responsibilities. But can he do it? Or, will he always be tempted by beautiful women?

What I love about what the author did is she created a memorable romance book that I believe also has appeal to the male audience. Impressive work.

Even the most perfect lives can be shattered in an instant. In this moving, emotionally charged novel, Danielle Steel introduces listeners to an unforgettable cast of characters striving to overcome tragedy and discover the inner resources and resilience to win at life - once again.

Lily Thomas is an aspiring ski champion training for the Olympics, a young woman with her heart set on winning the gold. But in one moment, Lily's future is changed forever, her hopes for the Olympics swept away in a tragic accident.

Dr. Jessie Matthews, the neurosurgeon who operates on her that night, endures a tragedy of her own, and instantly becomes the sole support of her four young children, while her own future hangs in the balance.

Bill, Lily's father, has pinned all his hopes on his only daughter, his dreams now shattered.

Other lives will entwine themselves with theirs: Joe, a financial manager, faces a ruined career at the hand of a dishonest partner. Carole, a psychologist at Mass General, is a breast cancer survivor, her body and heart scarred by what she's been through. Teddy, with a spinal cord injury worse than Lily's, dreams of college and becoming an artist.

From the ashes of their lives, six people fight to alter the course of destiny and refuse to be defeated. When Bill builds a remarkable rehab facility for his daughter, countless lives are forever altered, and each becomes a winner.

Winners is about refusing to be beaten, no matter how insurmountable the challenge. And when Lily gets on skis again and enters the Paralympics, the battle to brave life again is won. Winners is about more than surviving; it is about courage, victory, and triumph. When all appears to be lost, the battle has just begun.

By Robin Lee I am a long time fan of Danielle Steel's novels, I have just learned to pick and choose through the years what novels are the best...Well, sometimes she still surprises me..."Winners" is just that a Winner..A heart warming and touching story about "Survivors"..This story had me engrossed, shocked, crying, edgy, laughing and smiling by the end of the book....I couldn't ask for better and couldn't put this book down..I think what still pulls me back to her books is for a few moments in time you get lost in this complicated, hopeless saga, with a happily ever after ending world..Sometimes that is a refreshing and good feeling..She opens her book right from the start with two unexpected shocks immediately...I really didn't see the second one coming..Now for the Thomas and Matthew's families their entire course of lives are altered forever..It is a devastating chain reaction...Bill Thomas grieving for a daughter that's still alive but he feels she is essentially dead...Almost selfishly at times, because his hopes and dreams through Lily have ended....Jessie Matthews is grieving for her soul mate, losing herself and children along the way..Tim was a surgeon too, but he completed them all...One of the most heart breaking scenes in this novel was Tim Matthews' funeral when it started to snow big flakes it reminded me of both the families' tears falling down........Will Bill find that elusive miracle for Lily or be able to come to terms with his daughter's prognosis..Will Jessie find her will to live and use her gift again....Will both families be able to heal and become whole...Who will end up at the Winners Circle or Lily Pad in the end.....After reading this book it stuck with me for days becasue it's not just about "Survivors"...Danielle Steel was able to tap into a world that we hardly ever hear about which is Spinal Cord Injuries and people with Disabilities...According to the last NSCIA statistics in the U.S. alone aproximatley 12,000 new injuries occur every year ranging from paraplegic to quadraplegic....This book shows a great example that with the right care and rehabilitation people go one to live normal lives like the rest of us..Some end up achieving many of their goals and dreams just like in this story...I was very impressed with the details and research that went into this book...That is what makes this novel a "WINNER".........

Very Predictable and Highly Unrealistic By BonnieD (SPOILERS)This novel takes a tragedy, solves all the problems with money, and ties everything up neatly with a big red bow. The premise is promising: A teenage skiing sensation has her Olympic dreams ended by a devasting spinal injury, causing her to lose the use of her legs. Then Dad takes over. Luckily he has multiple millions of dollars, which he uses to solve every obstacle. Her Dad immediately spends a lot of money to have their home remodeled, gets her a car with manual controls, and then spends 10 million on a rehab facility to help others. How nice for them. All problems solved with money. Then we have a teenage girl who has just lost her dreams and never really seems to get very upset about it. She immediately retains her former skiing coach (at Dad's expense) and trains for the Paralympics. Of course, she has romance too. But she doesn't have a romance with the quadriplegic teen who becomes her very close friend and to whom she confides everything. No, she has a romance with the perfectly healthy, walking son of her doctor, even though she hasn't known him that long. She also gets into Princeton and thanks to Dad's money has everything she needs to lead a normal life. I realize DS is loaded, but her readers are not, and it would be nice to see problems solved without throwing huge chunks of cash at them. The father gets a romance too, and so does his friend who came back into their lives on the brink of suicide. All of the romances are easy to see coming. All of the problems are solved with cash. The father has endless millions to make everyone's lives happy. It would be nice to see a more realistic approach to the challenges faced in this book.

Accidents happen and they can cause injury, illness and sometimes even death. Most times these are unexpected and the way we deal with these sudden shocks can change our lives forever.Lily Thomas is an only child who father Bill will do anything for her and money is never an object. While Lily is practicing on the ski slopes for the Olympics she is involved in a tragic accident that will change her and her dads life foreverDr. Jessie Matthews is a neurosurgeon who has a loving husband and four adoring children and a somewhat perfect life. Unfortunately as in life nothing is forever and on the night she is operating on Lily tragedy strikes her own life.In order for Lily to get better she will need rehab and so begins an idea that Bill comes up with while talking to his college buddy, Joe who was a financial manager but whose life also took a terrible turn. Together they embark on a marvelous journey of what they think is a dream but promise to make it happen.Since other people will be needed for this to happen they contact Carole who is a psychologist at Mass General and who also has had the most difficult year of her life.Suddenly this dream is starting to fit together like the pieces of an intricate puzzle and it is amazing how things will turn out. Winner is definitely that and you will be engrossed with it. I think it is one of her best.

This is the long awaited follow-up to "Ten Pounds of Gold" and "Big Gold." Like those books, this book is FULL COLOR and features beautiful photography of the belts, both original and replica.

Mike Mooneyham of the Charleston Post and Courier writes "Bourne strikes gold with new book on U.S. wrestling title."

In 1975, Jim Crockett, Jr. and George Scott created the United States Heavyweight Championship for the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling territory. For the next 13 years, 21 of the the greatest names in professional wrestling, including 13 future WWE Hall-of-Famers, proudly wore one of five different title belts that represented that championship.

The list of names that held this title reads like a Who's Who: Harley Race, Johnny Valentine, Terry Funk, Paul Jones, Blackjack Mulligan, Bobo Brazil, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Wahoo McDaniel, Magnum T.A., Tully Blanchard, Lex Luger, Dusty Rhodes, Barry Windham and many others.

Jim Crockett Promotions’ United States Championship explores these five classic title belts, and tells all the stories of the angles, feuds, and controversies throughout the title’s history. There were other regional U.S. championships during the territory era, but this was the biggest and the most widely recognized of them all, and it served as the historical foundation for the United States Championship recognized by the WWE today.

The book includes:

- An exhaustive title history of the championship from its inception in 1975 until the sale of Jim Crockett Promotions to Ted Turner in 1988. All the angles, storylines, feuds, and big matches.

- A detailed look at the design of all five Crockett U.S. championship belts and how they were made, with expert input from belt-maker "Ace of Belts" Dave Millican.

- Historical photographs of all the champions wearing all of the different versions of the belts they held.

- Brackets and results for all five U.S. title tournaments during the Crockett years. - A look at where the title belts are today.

- A brief look at other U.S. championships in other territories during the NWA territorial years.

- A brief look at later U.S. championships that traced their title history to the Crockett U.S. title.

- Trivia and statistics.

- Heritage and legacy.

- Over 100 photographs of both the champions and the belts, most in full color!

"Dick Bourne is the Indiana Jones of title belt archeology." - Mike Johnson, PWInsider.com

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Interesting, Dark, and a Little Funny By Sarah Smith Totally acceptable. I liked it. It was light enough to read easily. It was deep enough to keep me interested. There was character evolution and plot. Am I a better person for having read it? Eh. My takeaways are the philosophical bonus (because that’s what I love) and the notion that a BDSM relationship doesn’t have to come across as degrading or violent. If you read these kinds of stories, I think you’ll enjoy this one.If you don’t read these kinds of stories, this is one of the better ones. What you get:• You get a romance about a young woman named Simone who was involuntarily introduced to something scary that she discovered she loved. She’s not an experienced girl, but she’s not stupid. She’s witty and she’s not afraid to call people out or—my favorite—use people’s own words against them. I dislike stupid heroines in romance/erotica/all stories so Simone was refreshing. I found her further refreshing because she kept her identity. She enjoyed pleasing her partner in their sexual encounters but she was never degraded in these encounters. She was also not afraid to take charge.• You get a man, Isaac, with a somewhat complicated past, a past which he will not talk about and naturally rears its ugly head to bite everyone in the butt. He’s a little stilted in his speech. Simone says he talks like he’s got a stick up his butt—she’s right. But he’s also funny. He’s not entirely inclined to obey when his partner takes charge but he doesn’t dismiss the notion and does his best to please her in these few encounters.• You get two people who talk to each other. They might not always do it well, but they do it.• You get a story that’s not too heavy but not a walk in the park, a pretty easy read. The tone is kind of conversational but not stream of consciousness. It’s written in the first and third persons and in the present tense. Personally, I have a difficult time writing in the present tense, so kudos to Ms. Haze for doing it well. What you don’t get:• You don’t get a weak heroine who just wants to be someone’s slave.• You don’t get a stupid heroine who is completely clueless.• You don’t get an angry hero who just wants to beat up and overpower someone.• You don’t get a hero who’s dark and brooding all the time.• You don’t get a heroine who keeps fretting about what she did wrong to make the hero dark and brooding.• You don’t get great grammar. (Disclosure: I’m a freelance editor.) It’s not hard to read this story at all. But it has a little room for improvement regarding grammar. A lot of sentences are overly long and get convoluted. Some pronouns get ambiguous. Some verb tenses and numbers get confused. But it’s not bad, certainly not bad enough that I wouldn’t recommend it (and I’ve read things with such poor grammar that I gave up on them).A bonus:It seems like a lot of stories try to psychoanalyze BDSM-ers, and Mate does to a small extent. But, more than that, Mate takes a philosophical stance about finding truth in darkness (which truly has nothing to do with the BDSM aspects). And even ties the hero and heroine’s coupled evolution to turning the light on. It doesn’t overburden the book; really, it’s only briefly mentioned in some key conversation—it’s well-placed. Plato and Socrates wouldn’t ponder its ramifications. But it’s interesting and refreshing.Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher through Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review.

It kept me interested the whole way through.I loved the chemistry between Simone and Isaac was good but sort of weak. What he did about not telling his true self was good start for her to get mad but there needed to be something that was very hard to forgive. Isaac did seem honest and sincere and had an easy going disposition. For a master in BDSM he was not very powerful. Simone seemed really gullible.I think one character should of been the stronger one.But the story flowed smoothly and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. The ending was a little disappointing, I thought it would have a more of a bang at the end.But all in all a nice simple love story. I really enjoyedReview copy provided via Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review.

Sometimes I will read a book just because the title catches my eye as this did. I actually didn't expect this story. I enjoyed the mystery, the betrayals, the BDSM elements, the hot sex, the surprise parenting. I also liked Issac he was so damaged & conflicted but good none the less. I also liked Simone who although a bit strange was so much stronger than she ever imagined. The support characters were awesome as well. There has to be more about them as they are screaming loudly for stories of their own. Those are stories I look forward to reading. I have a new appreciation for serials.A review copy was provided by Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review.

By Holly Gilliatt I loved the premise of the book as soon as I read the blurb, and this novel exceeded my expectations. Catherine McKenzie is a very talented writer that deftly accomplished three things: kept me compulsively turning the pages, made me laugh out loud more times than I could keep track of and tugged at my heart, too. Loved all the music intertwined into the story (and cool playlist at the end of the book). Highly recommend if you enjoy biting humor and a compelling storyline. I look forward to her next release this summer!

Once I started reading this book last night, I was unable to put it down. I spent a lazy Sunday reading it until I was finished. Now, I'm sad to see it go.Katie is quirky, free spirited and lost in the world that she has always known. After showing up drunk to her dream job interview, she takes an offer from the same company to go to rehab to follow a celebrity diva and get the inside scoop on her life. But Katie gets so much more than she bargains for.Catherine, the author, really did her research on this one. Her portrayal of rehab seems logical. I have never been there myself, but have known others who have and I'd say there is quite a bit of truth in what she writes. She takes a quirky spin on it, and really develops Katie's character down to the way she thinks about whether she is an alcoholic, and the way she acts in regards to it. Katie has this conflicting dialog playing in her head, the way a person does when they are trying to justify their actions to make it fall in their favor, in this case, a person without a drinking problem. There is a lot of emphasis on this aspect, which really makes this book work. I love the lingo that Katie uses, and Catherine develops her character so well, that I knew what Katie was going to do next. Catherine's knowledge of AA was very evident in this book, and she covers it well.I thought the ending was a little cliché, but the book was great! I absolutely loved how she wrote what goes on in Katie's mind, and she focused on her personality traits that run right along an addicts personality traits. That is what kept me enthralled in this book from beginning to end. I highly recommend this little gem!

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Kept me turning pages . . . By Kathryn Magendie What a fun read! It's not that there isn't angst and deep or serious issues threaded in and out of SPIN, but more that the author didn't weigh the novel down with those "issues," instead opting to keep the tone light, which I appreciated. I rooted for the MC, Kate - who self-denies her way into a hole, that is, until circumstances force her to face up to that denial and dig her way out, dirtied and spitting. The beginning pages of SPIN show an immature and careless Kate, one who doesn't seem to want to grow up. All Kate wants is to "land her dream job" - but she even sabotages that, just as she does her relationships, and her friendships. When her "self-sabotage" leads her, in a strange kind of backward way, back to her dream job, she jumps at the chance--even if that means a little lying (or a lot of lying) and a little pretending (or a lot of pretending!) and losing respect and friendships . . . little does Kate know the tables will turn and she will find out things about herself while searching to find out the "scoop" on an unsuspecting celebrity.Humorous, fun, at times intense, witty, charming, and poignant, SPIN kept me turning the pages. There were times I asked, "Hmmm, could this really happen? I'm not so sure . . ." but then I thought, "Who cares?" for if the author makes me believe in her world, then I believe. I was willing to follow wherever Kate (and Mckenzie) led me. At the end of the book, I had a big ole grin plastered -- although, I did hate to say goodbye to these characters I grew to care about and enjoy spending time with. One other caveat: It's a shame this book isn't available in the states - I had to order through Amazon Canada - the shipping costs were almost as high as the cost of the book - I can see where this could deter sales, and, again, that would be a shame.

Part introspective soul searching, part cultural analysis, Tribal tackles the controversies plaguing college athletics, tracing the dubious historical underpinnings of Americans’ most popular sport, offering a visceral and often funny analysis of its tribal thrills and deep contradictions.

Florida State’s football team is always in the headlines, producing Heisman Trophy candidates, winning championships, and, at the same time, dealing with federal investigations into corruption and rape. Same as many big time collegiate sports programs. Seems no matter how the team transgresses off the field, if they excel on the field, everyone forgives them. Writer, professor and conflicted Seminole Diane Roberts looks at the problems plaguing her campus in Tallahassee, examining them within the context of college football itself and its significance in American life, and explores how the game shapes our culture.

Tribal: College Football and the Secret Heart of America, by Diane Roberts

Review “Tribal is a lover’s quarrel with college football so raucous, so entertainingly appalled, and so wise that it goes down as easily as a shot of bourbon from a smuggled flask on a Saturday afternoon in the fall.” (Will Blythe, New York Times bestselling author of To Hate Like This is to Be Happy Forever)“…a penetrating examination of how and why football has infiltrated our system of higher education…” (Salon)“In Diane Roberts’s deft hands, football is never just a game-it’s a mirror of American attitudes toward gender, class, and especially race. Roberts is a brilliant cultural critic and a dream of a writer, and Tribal is not only timely-it’s necessary reading.” (Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Devil in the Grove)“People who have decided to read one book having to do with college football should choose Tribal. Roberts presents the attractions of the game as well as the recognition that college football as practiced at Florida State and places like it is indefensible-part ‘beloved tradition,’ part ‘corporate enterprise.” (Boston Globe)“Those experiences were no doubt the germ of Tribal which exudes Roberts’ satirical Southern sensibility and way of wrapping hard truths in a droll, frequently bawdy and baroque kind of humor that can combine TMZ tabloid shock and Faulknerian literary awe in the same paragraph.” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)“A gifted writer, [Roberts] is rightly outraged by the sport and her school’s links with some of the uglier aspects of American life, but she truly adores the ‘Noles. Most readers will share her ambivalence while thoroughly enjoying her take on a troubled sport.” (Booklist)“[Tribal] affords an explanation of one of the most profound puzzles of today’s college-sports scene: why the NCAA colossus has not only secured the American psyche in a stranglehold but continues to tighten its grip.” (BookForum)“Diane Roberts is a wonder. She’s a surpassingly insightful writer and is as funny as a stand-up comic. Her book Tribal, on college football and far more, is a sui generis masterpiece.” (Robert Olen Butler, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain)“Diane Roberts is irresistible, the Molly Ivins of Florida, and Tribal is essential to understanding the dynamics of American culture. Tribal isn’t just a good book, it’s a great one-and hilarious to boot.” (Bob Shacochis, National Book Award-winning author of Easy in the Islands)

From the Back Cover

One overeducated Florida State fan confronts the religiously perverted, racially suspect, and sexually fraught nature of the sport she hates to love: college football.

Diane Roberts is a self-described feminist with a PhD from Oxford. She's also a second-generation season ticket holder—and an English professor—at one of the elite college football schools in the country. It's not as if she approves of the violence and hypermasculinity on display; she just can't help herself. So every Saturday from September through December she surrenders to her Inner Barbarian. The same goes for the rest of her "tribe," those thousands of hooting, hollering, beer-swilling Seminoles who, like Roberts, spent the 2013–14 season basking in the loping, history-making Hail Marys of Jameis Winston, the team's Heisman-winning quarterback, when they weren't gawking, dumbstruck, at the headlines in which he was accused of sexual assault.

In Tribal, Roberts explores college football's grip on the country at the very moment when gender roles are blurring, social institutions are in flux, and the question of who is—and is not—an American is frequently challenged. For die-hard fans, the sport is a comfortable retreat into tradition, proof of our national virility, and a reflection of an America without troubling ambiguities. Yet, Roberts argues, it is also a representation of the buried heart of this country: a game and a culture built upon the dark past of the South, secrets so obvious they hide in plain sight. With her droll Southern voice and a phrase-turning style reminiscent of Roy Blount Jr. and Sarah Vowell, Roberts offers a sociological unpacking of the sport's dubious history that is at once affectionate and cautionary.

About the Author

Diane Roberts is a contributor to NPR, the Guardian, and the Oxford American, among many other publications. She is the author of three books, and her work has been anthologized in Best American Essays and Best American Food Writing. She holds a PhD from Oxford University and teaches literature and creative writing at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

I recommend this book to anyone inter By Buckeye2011 This is by far the most interesting book on college football released this year. While it incorporates many of the same overarching story lines as other works (finances - Billion Dollar Ball, race in the South - The Last Season, scandal - The System), the lens that Roberts writes through is unique and engaging. Her use of metaphors, historical and literary references, and personal experiences as a faculty member at FSU and fan of the Seminoles is fantastic. I recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring the intersection of college football, race, culture and higher education in America.

Most college football fans I meet and speak to haven't read Foucault or are familiar with cultural studies. So reading this book by an English professor at FSU who LOVES college football while recognizes its warts was very refreshing. If anything, I was left at the end of the book if the author did TOO good a job making the case AGAINST the game! She discusses the misogyny, the aggressive Christian triumphalism, the racial issues including echoes of plantation culture, and the physical concerns of concussions. She discusses her reasons for loving college football BEFORE devoting a chapter each to these concerns. So by the end, I found myself asking....wait, "so did you READ the book you just wrote???" But, of course, that's her point. That loving college football is irrational and and even mildly irresponsible. But she can't help herself. Neither can I.

Barbour Even though I have given this book a less than average rating; I give Diane Roberts an A+ for getting my attention. Unlike Diane, who was born here and got the Seminole “genes”; I ended up in Tallahassee because of a job that only lasted 4 years and was lost largely because of the very culture that Diane describes. That was 11 years ago.Consequently, I do not share the love – hate relationship that she does. I also do not share her version of feminism or her distaste she seems to have for Christianity. Like most so-called liberals teaching in our universities, I wonder if she has ever seen a real Christian.Having said that, I do think she has described the heretical version connected with football pretty well. When I took the behind the scenes tour of Doak Stadium, I was just as disturbed as the Apostle Paul must have been when he visited Athens and saw the many idols ( Acts 17:16).Yes, the place is filled with statues and icons of the ‘gods” of football. She is correct. But true Christianity says, “You shall have no other gods before me” (Old Testament) and “Little children keep yourselves from idols” and “flee idolatry” (New Testament). What she describes as the “secret heart of America” and as a very Tribal thing is in reality something that keeps people from God. Football, like gladiator games for the early church, does that.Maybe she needs to see the distaste portion for football in her psyche as a sign that something is wrong and quit playing games with words.Instead of criticizing organizations like The Fellowship for Christian Athletes, she should be praising it as a positive force in an otherwise very barbarous, brutal, sexist, retrograde, and racist culture that mistakes an aggressive fake Christian triumphalism complete with sexy cheerleaders singing “Just a Closer Walk with Me”, for the real McCoy.
