Fishing the 50 States, by Donn N Rubingh

About the Author After 28 years of fishing in bits and bursts while pursuing his first vocation as a research scientist at P&G, Donn Rubingh set forth on a new goal: wholeheartedly pursuing the art and science of fishing. With retirement in 2001 came the time to spend on travel, grandchildren and, of course, more rigorously exploring the fishing life. Thus, in 2005, the challenge of Fishing the Fifty States was born. Over the course of ten years, the author has fished lakes, streams, reservoirs and even the ocean. This book chronicles that effort.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful story! By Amazon Customer I absolutely love this short story!! The only negative thing I can say about it is, it was too short!! I didn't want it to end!! I think it's great how every female character in this book is so unbelievably strong (physically and mentally). You don't get that a lot from male writers and Josh Hilden did an excellent job. I would love to see a part 2 to this. Josh Hilden told me that this was his favorite story to write, and I can see why! I can't wait to read his other books.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting story, interesting characters By Kindle Customer Good story. I liked the characters. It was poorly edited and the end seemed off. Like he either went to long or didn't cut it off soon enough. I like Hilden' s work though. I plan to keep reading his stuff.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One way ticket. By Lisa I'll just be honest and say, that I think this is one of Mr. Hildens finest stories. He's written some pretty kick butt tales, but this one was solid. Yep, I'd recommend this story and author.

Great collection of short stories presented in an unusual and compelling way By Debbie Young A very engaging and thought-provoking collection of stories, in an intriguing format that takes you full circle from the opening story back to its central characters, on a journey via minor characters that appear in each story along the way, like a literary game of tag.Although many of the stories are about thwarted characters looking back with regret on their life choices and chances, there are still sufficient hopeful episodes and outcomes to satisfy a lover of happy endings like me! There is also quite a lot of humour with the odd throwaway line and witty turn of phrase tempering the melancholy. The variety in characters and settings keeps you guessing the whole way through, so the endings are seldom predictable - though on the odd occasion when I did recognise in advance how a dilemma would turn out, the denouement was so well done that my enjoyment of the story was by no means spoiled. Rather, I felt like a partner-in-crime with the author - very satisfying. I also enjoyed the sprinkle of magical realism thrown in along the way, which adds more possibilities to the outcomes.Another feature I particularly liked about this book is that due to the structure, it encourages the reader to think again about characters they might have dismissed as minor or uninteresting, discovering their hidden sides and secrets in subsequent stories. Fiction like this can do real social good - having read this book, you'd think twice about dismissing an underdog or a shy, dowdy person, and be more likely to treat them with more consideration. All in all, a very competent and compelling first collection, and I very much look forward to reading more by this author.

The author exhibits quite an imagination, ranging from characterizing everyday people and events to the fantastical. She has a wonderful ability to conjure up a vivid mental picture of people, places, and events with her detailed descriptions using just the right choice of words. One of the pleasant surprises of this anthology is the unexpected continuity that creates the “circle of short stories”. I look forward to future works from this talented author.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed English Ivy very much, and would love to read more of The Late Bloomers Series. 5 stars! By April Wood “The formerly adventurous Ivy Cross, breaker of rules and hearts, had crossed the threshold of middle age and lost her spark. She was on a mission to get it back.”What's It About?Ivy, a Senior U.S. Embassy employee, has fantasies about leaving her job, and starting all over again. Full of love for her closest friends who have made big changes themselves, she wants success for herself, too.Her love life is also in a rut, but this is partly her own fault. Sharing her body and experiences with a man is one thing, but she refuses to share her heart and dreams. She tied up her goals and adventures in life with a man before, and that ended in disaster. She vowed to herself, never again.Ruben delights Ivy as much as he aggravates her. She agrees to a date with him, but it doesn’t go as expected… Later she is offered a job by his competitor, but it seems to good to be true. She also learns about a promotion at her U.S. Embassy job that she is eligible for. Ivy has a lot of options, but is unsure of what direction to take. With the help of her late bloomer girlfriends, Ivy makes a decision that changes her life. But was the offer presented to her in good faith?English Ivy is a story about major life changes, vulnerability, love, self-discovery, and having an amazing support system of girlfriends around you to help you along the way. –Whether to share a glass of wine, or tell you like it is.My ThoughtsI enjoyed the twist with this contemporary romance, with having the heroine a middle aged woman, settled into her career, as opposed to the new-adult heroine, just starting out, who is usually featured in a romance story. It completely changed the feel of this story, in a very powerful way. It’s hard to compare this story to others in this genre, making The Late Bloomers Series, very unique. I can’t tell you how refreshing that is.I absolutely loved Ivy. In this story we watch the amazing transformation in life, love, and career of this fiery red-head, never sacrificing one for the other. She makes bold moves that other women could only WISH to make, making her a character who a reader can enjoy living vicariously through.Overall, I enjoyed English Ivy very much, and would love to read more of The Late Bloomers Series. 5 stars!Full review: https://aprillwood.wordpress.com/2015/08/11/awrw-book-review-english-ivy-the-late-bloomers-series-book-2-by-author-betsy-talbot-betsytalbot-romance-over40-latebloomers/

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another Winner for the Late Bloomers By Joan Kerr Betsy Talbot has produced a another winner with English Ivy, the second in her Late Bloomers series of romance novels for women in their forties and beyond. In this book, independent and strong-willed Ivy faces tough new decisions in her quest for a more fulfilling and exciting life. Feeling stale and bored in her long-time career as an economist for the U. S. Embassy in London, Ivy searches for more interesting employment - a search that is complicated by Ruben, a passionate (and funny) Spanish businessman who refuses to be discouraged by her apparent disinterest, and by Christof,a German billionaire businessman who is used to getting his own way. This book is a fun read. It is full of intrigue and plot twists. Ms. Talbot does a wonderful job of describing the challenges faced by career women in today's business world. The characters are multi-dimensional and "real," with emotions that ring true. Ivy and Ruben both make mistakes, as we all do, but learn and grow as a result.I look forward to reading the upcoming books in this series!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another winner! By Sue J A hard headed American woman transplanted in London, a soft-hearted, big-hearted man from Spain, fabulous friends, a despicable sleaze-bag, an adorable sidekick, international business, exotic locales (at least to a girl from Kansas), a kick-ass story, and with the exception of the loveable sidekick, everyone is over 40! People with real experience and real baggage, instead of mid to late twenty somethings who think they have all the answers, but are in fact, clueless. Much like book one in the series (Wild Rose), Ms Talbot demonstrates that she knows the hearts, minds, and shortcomings of mature women and those in their lives. She also has a wicked sense of humor that escapes when you least expect it - ex: the aside to the sleaze-bag's assistant after a particularly intense and potentially dangerous encounter. As in Rose's story (and the books can be read as stand-alones, but they do build somewhat upon one another), the smells and tastes of the food made me hungry. I do hope that someday there is a novella that give that adorable sidekick his HEA.

Bunty McKenna's very ordinary husband has had a vasectomy - behind her back.

Having found the invoice for said vasectomy, she starts to notice other things, too: like how much time her husband is spending at the gym, his new-found interest in clothes...and are his teeth looking whiter?

In Bunty's mind, there can only be one explanation: he's having an affair.

Naturally, the only solution is for Bunty to find a new husband before her old one leaves her. And so begins "Operation Sugar Daddy".

After a string of bad dates set up through the illustrious Croesus Club, Bunty finally meets Ben, a handsome yachtie from Auckland who is, most importantly, fabulously wealthy. Surely this is a match made in heaven....

Hiding her own affair from her adulterous husband and sullen teenage daughter makes it all the more exciting, until suddenly Ben returns to Auckland with no explanation. To distract her from the disappearance of her future second-husband (not that he knew it yet), Bunty turns her mind to finding out exactly what her first husband is up to.

When all evidence seems conclusive, and since Bunty's childhood best friend, Cally, also happens to live in Auckland, she decides to make a spontaneous visit to track down the illusive Ben. But when she arrives, all is not as it seems.

Bunty has made a big mistake.

But is it too late to reunite her family, or has she taken a step too far?

As It Is on Telly is a gripping story of romance and adventure from a master storyteller.

Jill Marshall is the author of the best-selling Jane Blonde series for children, published in more than 20 countries and 10 languages. In addition to her writing, Jill is a writing consultant and trainer, and has two master's degrees, in history and creative writing.
