Land of Dreams is an inspiring romantic novel about an English professor who discovers she doesn’t have to accept a life of unhappiness.

Five months short of her fortieth birthday, Ellie reflects on how musing about the meaning of life just isn’t the same as it was in her twenties, when her life was opened up before her like a “land of dreams, so various, so beautiful, so new.”

Ellie finds solace from her disappointments in her daily runs and while writing her intensely personal confessional poetry, published under the pen name Avery Vaughn, which allows her a sense of invisibility from the world. And after her young colleague and best friend, Marta, takes her out when they are supposed to be at an English conference, the dance floor becomes another place for her to disappear from it all.

Enter Dr. Liam Curran, writer, critic, mountain climber, musician, and professor—a beautiful, radiant force, both commanding and gentle. Against her will, Ellie is drawn to him.

How can he know so much about her life?

Immerse yourself in a world where literature and poetry dance with mystical forces to reveal the natural order of the events in our lives.

Land of Dreams, by E.J. Densmore

From Kirkus Reviews Haunted by possibilities, depressed by realities, an English professor finds herself surprised by love in Densmore’s engrossing debut romance. Life is losing its luster for 39-year-old Elizabeth “Ellie” Purnell, a teacher at a Wisconsin college. Draped in expensive clothes, wearing $500 shoes, and driving a Jaguar, Ellie seemingly has it all: “Being impeccably dressed gave her a sense of control. It was part of the persona. You know, the woman whose life is perfect. Professor Purnell, the town prodigy…ageless, brilliant, witty, reserved, and without flaw.” It’s a charade. Her hunky but alcoholic husband, Alec, ignores her work; he isn’t interested in her scholarly articles and has no clue she’s a poet. Her sweet, beloved 14-year-old son, Jordan, has diabetes. And Ellie fears she will never match her father James Lawson’s academic success. Despite her “unbearable urge to escape,” she stays, bolstered by duty, family (especially her younger sister, Becca), dance excursions to Chicago with feisty American lit prof (and lesbian) Marta, and a daily 5 a.m. run during which she calms herself by saying, “Be a funnel, not a vessel.” Then chaos arrives in the form of visiting professor Liam Curran, a famous Irish/English literary critic. The charismatic scholar and academic star insists on a series of debates with Ellie about literature, starting with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It’s a dream come true and a terrifying challenge for Ellie, who is thrown by Liam’s intensity and intimate knowledge of all her work: he’s read seemingly everything she’s ever written, even an undergraduate paper. Densmore’s beautifully crafted romance vibrates with sexual tension and passion familiar to fans of Jane Austen or the Brontë sisters. Among readers, poets and scholars might relate to the indulgent dream of having one’s words reach and affect a true soul mate. While the flashback chapters to Ellie’s student days—when she passionately lived with self-absorbed musician Dylan Ross, a Percy Bysshe Shelley–type—break the narrative flow, they are worth it for a terrific scene in which she violently cuts off his long hair. The surprising, bittersweet conclusion satisfies the hope that true love never dies. Splendid romance from an author to watch

Land of Dreams dives into the life of english professor Ellie Purnell, an impeccable middle-age woman, torn between responsibilities to her family and her longing to find the meaning of her life. Escaping from reality, she runs, she dances, she writes. Her world is turned upside down when she engages a handsome professor in a debate who seems to know more about her than she does. A wonderfully written novel about love lost and found and the meaning of being in the moment. Highly recommended read from a promising author. I look forward to what's to come! A+

Her characters are very real and relatable, as are the situations they face; struggles for growth, self awareness, and actualization. Densmore gives us a look into the lives of people we might know and then serves us surprises that, like real life, are most unexpected. A great read. I highly recommend!

PARALLEL LINES Putting the past to rest. This is the final instalment of Kiri’s tale. Now aged forty-one we find her working at the Courtauld Gallery in London guiding visitors around the exhibits, on her feet all day . . . sometimes seven days a week . . . but loving every minute of it. She has moved to a house with a small garden in Fulham, dyed her hair brown and at last she looks like the picture on the cover of the books. There is a new man around, Graham a millionaire businessman looking for the love of his life. This is partly Graham’s story too; he sells cheap imports from China and we watch as he accumulates more and more wealth and money, at the expense of British and European jobs. But these are only the rails along which the parallel lines of Kiri’s new life runs; re-building shattered relationships; abandoning others that refuse to be resurrected and attempting to construct meaningful new bonds from the flimsiest materials, mud, straw and a lack of commitment. Meanwhile, Madison and Keith are bidding to rule the world and fill their bank accounts by bringing the North American economy to a standstill. Honest and unsentimental, Kiri embraces the life she has rather than the one she might have hoped for, with her customary restraint and dignity. Engaging from the start, and like the previous novels sensually immersive, the novel begins slowly but builds to an intense and fast-paced contemporary thriller.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A creatively busy and engaging By Books Laid Bare & Books Laid Bare Boys Again the author packs this book with more content than you could shake a stick at, there is love, hate, retribution, add all this is on top of the fact that Kiri is juggling career and family issues that are quite simply bizarre and you have a book that you cannot take your eyes off.I worried for Kiri, for the sorrow that seemed to permeate her words, the fact that after everything she had been through she still didn’t seem to be 100% happy, I’m not sure if she actually knows the meaning of the word. She revelled in her work, no matter its complexity, intensity or location but personal issues and relationships had always been her Achilles heel and now in her forties, she gave little sign that her reticence was going to change.Again the author served up a book that left nothing behind, it was cleverly embellished and intensely detailed – in some cases had maybe a little too much detail but I do like the fact that the author left nothing to chance, he left little open for interpretation and while this is not a bad thing, in my case I would have liked to us my imagination a little more, I liked the picture that the author drew, I just wanted to be able to colour it in on my own. But then again with the obvious vision he had for his characters I can imagine that it would have been difficult for him to let Kiri out of his grasp for too long.At the risk of repeating myself I would say that this is an author that has and eye for detail and a vocabulary that knows no boundaries, no subject matter is safe and all aspects of life either imaginary or creative are woven with ease through a story that will certainly hold your attention right up until the last page
