What is it really like to be a racer? What is it like to be swept along at 60kmh in the middle of the pack? What happens to the body during a high-speed chute? What tactics must teams employ to win the day, the jersey, the grand tour? What sacrifices must a cyclist make to reach the highest levels? What is it like on the bus? In the hotels? What camaraderie is built in the confines of a team? What rivalries? How does it feel to be constantly on the road, away from loved ones, tasting one more calorie-counted hotel breakfast? David Millar offers us a unique insight into the mind of a professional cyclist during his last year before retirement. Over the course of a season on the World Tour, Millar puts us in touch with the sights, smells and sounds of the sport. This is a book about youth and age, fresh-faced excitement and hard-earned experience. It is a love letter to cycling.

The Racer: Life on the Road as a Pro Cyclist, by David Millar

Review "David Millar's book takes you inside the sport of cycling while also emphasising the absurdity of it. It's quite rare for a sportsman to be so immersed and yet able to detach themselves from it all ... The parts on crashing are amazing. I felt frightened and sore reading it" -- Richard Moore, author of Slaying the Badger

About the Author DAVID MILLAR has been a professional cyclist for 17 years, winning four stages of the Tour de France, five of the Vuelta a España and one stage of the Giro d'Italia. He is now a part-owner of the Garmin cycling team and a key figure of the World Anti-doping Agency's athletes committee.

I was super pissed that Garmin failed to honor his career and left him off their Tour roster in his final year! Justic may have been how poorly the team did that year. While Dave may have pulled his punch with this book he did call out the lack of class of JV and others! More to the point he once again demonstrated his own class, ability to tell a story and real passion for the sport we all love. This is perhaps the best follow up to his first book and I hope this is the 2nd of many books to come....

It's smart, funny, and seems to have capured Millar's final year; a mix of melancholy, relief, and anticipation of the future, quite well. Unlike many books recently released by former cyclists, Millar's is conspicuously absent a ghost writing credit or co-author. The book feels to, very much, be a work of his own. I look forward to his future books.

I have always been a fan of The Spaniard...but I have to say...this book allows the reader to get a personal glimpse of his life. I was inspired by the life stories Charlie shares with the reader and the obstacles he faced through his journey to the cage.Reading The Spaniard's story inspired me that we only live once. It reminded me of the importance of taking risks in life. It reminded me that taking risks far out-weigh the regrets that we could potentially live with as we come to the end of our life. This story is all about living life to the fullest and striving for excellence. One other cool aspect of this book...The Spaniard opens up about how important his family is to him. He is obviously a man with purpose and passion when it comes to his wife and daughter. At times, I think we can see superstars like Charlie in only one dimension...meaning...we only see them in the cage. However, I can tell you, that underneath this elite athlete is a man who really knows what is important in life (Family).Do yourself a favor...pick up this book. You will be inspired in so many facets in your life! I know I am!Larry HagnerThe Good Dad ProjectAuthor of "The Dad's Edge"

By Christopher Lewis An extremely well written story about a top Division 1 NCAA wrestler and HS Spanish teacher (hence the nickname the "Spaniard") who left to become a professional MMA fighter. After winning several Championships on the Regional level he realized his dream of becoming a UFC fighter (11 fights). Fighting in the World's Best MMA organization became a reality, fighting the likes of Johnny Hendricks, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, Rick Story, & Eric Silva. Although he's not done fighting & you can still find him in the gym almost every day he has begun a new chapter in his life as a mentor & motivater. Check out www.charlie-Brenneman.com for his speaking engagements, athletic tutorials, public appearances, & his online store.

Nate Marquardt didn’t get it together to fight Rick “The Horror” Story, and in about 24 hours notice, Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman was taking his place, fighting in a Co-Main Event. To those of you familiar with the UFC, he actually got the gladiator treatment before the "Face the Pain" anthem played that night! But if I knew anything, Rick Story was going to smoke this guy in front of a Pittsburgh crowd, about an hour and a half away from Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, Brenneman’s hometown. I knew this myself because I’d lived in Windber for a few years, and when I moved on, my parents did as well, about ten minutes away in Johnstown. Well, even if I thought that Brenneman was going to get destroyed, he never got my memo about it, and he pulled off a rather one-sided unanimous decision upset over Rick Story, a UFC Welterweight that most fighters dread fighting! That’s only part of Charlie Brenneman’s story. “Driven” gives a lot more.A lot of people who have watched Charlie Brenneman fight have called him a lay and pray fighter, due to his relying more on his wrestling, and not standing there and slugging it out. But that was how Brenneman won most of his fights, and he fought to win. In saying that, there is so much more to “The Spaniard,” than people give the man credit for. I absolutely loved his own personal journey, from the love of his family, to the embracing support of his in-laws, and ultimately with his choice to surround himself with the right people. He tells of how he came so close in wrestling, only to fall short, and then speaks of his motivation to compete in MMA, with fighting for the UFC being the ultimate goal. And despite him going 4-7 in the UFC, Brenneman turned heads whether fans liked it or not. I liked the guy, and still do!After learning that Brenneman lived so close to me and my parents, I made every last effort to watch all of his UFC fights. Did he ever manage “Fight of the Night” for his efforts? Nope. But he was interesting to watch, and he didn’t just let a man beat him. And to this day, he hasn’t let life get him down, and he encourages other people to this day! Hey, that’s a man to look up to, and somebody I want to read about, even if his book was self-published. And for being self-published, he did a great job with that as well!
