When Adrianne found out she was pregnant eight years ago, she made the decision to leave Bible school and raise her child alone. Staying would have prevented her boyfriend from fulfilling his God-appointed mission in life. But every day since, she has regretted her decision. Chris - rejected, confused, and heartbroken - finished school and soon found himself in Nicaragua, loving life as a missionary. But the void left by Adrianne's unexplained departure remains.

When Chris returns to the States for a friend's wedding, is his unexpected meeting with Adrianne a coincidence or a "God incidence?" Can they put aside the past and embrace a future together as a family?

It was all so very clean and the faiths were incredible! Wonderful stories By Mary Bell Foster Red Like CrimsonAdrienne & Chris, daughter, LoreleiSin, when they were young caused a rift in their relationship. She ran home; to figure things out, heal, get help… He moved on to fulfill his dream of missionary work, though it didn’t bring the fulfillment he had hoped because he couldn’t get over his love for Adrienne. Adrienne moved on too; with the help of her parents, getting her degree and a good job at a museum in Philadelphia. God arranges a meeting between the two so they can move on from the past. How like our God to provide just what we need at the right time, though we may think it’s been too long or too much has happened, healing is always possible with God.I enjoyed reading their story. Thank you, Ms. Thompson for giving us such encouraging reads.White as SnowBreanne, Brandon, Gran Gran…..Family, rifts, grudges and a forgiving Lord whose caring presence leads each to forgiveness and a life filled with joy. Healing takes time, they say, and often that is because of our own problems with letting go of hurt and getting down to business. Forgiving. In God’s time, though, that healing and forgiveness will bring a renewed joy to life and open doors to happiness that we never knew possible. Such is the case with Breanne and Brandon and their families.Such a wonderful story. Thank you, Janice Hannah Thompson, for this gift of words. Out Of The BlueKatie & Karl,Having left the Amish life, Katie and Karl have made a life of purpose and fulfilment for themselves, albeit separately. Circumstances bring them back together and you can almost hear God say, “Let the healing begin.”Relationships, families, couples suffer when a rift tears through them, but God, brings each one through to a place of healing. In His time.In Out Of The Blue, Ms. Thompson’s masterful crafting spins a wonderful story of love, faith and healing.

We just have to forgive ourselves. A different feel from other Janice Thompson books I have read but definitely worth reading.

Review

“Nick, I’ve spent time with Vince Lombardi, Bob Knight, Tommy Lasorda, Joe Torre, Larry Brown, Casey Stengel, and Cus D’Amato—just to name a few—and they’re all successful and they’re all different. The key thing for a coach and for a human being is to be yourself, and Nick, this is the characteristic you share with all those Hall of Fame coaches. You are yourself. You’re the consummate coach. You care about the game, about the way it is played, and about the person who is playing it. You don’t quite demand perfection, but you damn well want it. Larry Brown’s ultimate term of respect is to call someone Coach—as in Coach Holzman or Coach Smith. You are Coach Bollettieri.”

—Dick Schaap-- Late American sportswriter, broadcaster, and author

“Nick Bollettieri has always been a man with great vision and a charismatic personality who energizes everyone in his presence. I have watched Nick coach athletes of all abilities, from beginners to professionals. His positive teachings, with his energetic approach, lead to the development of successful tennis players.”

—Dick Vitale-- ABC and ESPN basketball analyst

“When I moved in with Nick at the age of 13, he became a surrogate father to me. Nick stressed discipline and self-control, but most of all he believed in me. Nick has the uncanny ability to know what each player needs to be motivated. For me, it was praise. The most lasting impression that I have about Nick is simply the feeling that came over me whenever he was on the court with me. Even to this day, if I’m playing tennis and Nick is there, the adrenaline starts to flow, and I leave the court sure that I can conquer the world.”

—Jimmy Arias

“Not only has Nick has been a great help to our tennis game, but he has also been a close friend of the family for years. His friendship and instruction have been invaluable to us.”

—Venus Williams

“I really think that Nick is not just a coach, but also a friend and someone that you can talk to. As a coach, he really knows what to tell the player so the player will be able to take the next step to be on the top. He has personally helped me to realize that I need the small things more than the large things. In the end, Nick is a great person and my friend.”

—Serena Williams

“Not only is Nick a terrific coach but also a great motivator. He makes you feel good on the court no matter what. Also, knowing him for the past few years, he’s not only a coach to me but a great friend with a big heart. He’ll always be special.”

—Tommy Haas

From the Publisher "The best coaches are those who combine creative instruction with electric motivation. A coach must have the ability to teach basic facts and skills, as well as the capacity to inspire athletes to perform at their very best. This is what separates Nick Bollettieri from others. His passion for tennis is infectious. His determination to produce a champion’s best is well documented."

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. disorganized By Michael J. Wheatley This is a long book but not very well organized. The first part deals with the bolettieri academy. It reads like promotional literature, from which it was probably taken. Next is grips. The grips recommended in this section differ from grips recommended when he discusses specific strokes (whats up with that?). Next come specific strokes. If you can imagine, there is not a single picture in the any of the chapters on serve, backhand, forehand, volley and specialty shots. Let me repeat, not a single picture! Nick references his video series, which would be absolutely mandatory viewing to make sense of the confusing text. A short drill section and some tips on buying and stringing racquets follows. A long section on the mental approach to tennis concludes the book. This book should have been exceptional given the authors experience and success but unfortunately, as a stand alone without the videos, it leaves something to be desired. At the very least, this book is of almost no value for beginners. I would recommend Tennis 2000 by Vic Braden as a much better and clearer choice. For advanced players interested in stroke production, the videos may be a better investment, though I have not seen them. At least this book is not too expensive, but it is hard to say much beyond that in the way of praise.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Bollettieri's Tennis Handbook By A Customer This is a good book to go along with Bollettieri's video series. It is a book that you can carry along with you to help remind you of areas that you need to work on. However, this is not a book to teach a beginner the game of tennis. This book is for the intermediate to advanced player and them the best techniques on training and strokes. If you are a total visual person, then the book isn't for you. If you can understand the concepts and have a good base to start with, then this book, along with the video series and be and excellent source for help. My favorite areas would be the Killer Forehand, Boll-istic Backhand and the Sonic Serve. If you follow the instruction in these 3 sections, I promise you that you will notice a big difference in your game.

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Bollettieri's Tennis Handbook By A Customer For any tennis players who want to learn any stroke, DO NOT buy this book. It is a total waste of money for me. Like the previous reviwer said there is no picture for the stroke production section at all. I BOUGHT his videos which are sketchy in many parts. I bought this book to clarify things on the tapes. I tell you there is nothing in this book that can help me understanding the videos better.I want to make it clear: his videos are not best made but have some good points in some tapes (Killer Forehand for one but I hate the distastful humor in it). So stay away from this book, it is a total waste of money.

A Perfect Life

The epitome of intelligence, high-powered energy, and grace, Blaise McCarthy is an icon in the world of television news, asking the tough questions and taking on the emotionally charged issues of world affairs and politics with courage and insight. A single mother, she manages her well-ordered career meticulously, always prepared on the air or interviewing world-renowned figures and heads of state. To her audience, Blaise seems to have it all. But privately, and off the set, there is another untold story she has kept hidden for years.

Blaise's teenage daughter, Salima, was blinded by Type 1 diabetes in childhood, and her needs have kept her away in a year-round boarding school with full-time medical care and assistance ever since. When Salima's school closes after a tragedy, Salima returns to her mother's New York City apartment, and suddenly they face challenges they've never had to deal with before, and that Blaise feels ill-equipped to handle. A new caretaker provided by Salima's school creates as many problems as he solves. Handsome, accomplished, thirty-two-year-old Simon Ward, with strong opinions on every topic, questions how mother and daughter view themselves and each other. Simon opens new doors for both of them and refuses to accept Salima's physical limitations. He turns their world upside down, and the three become friends.

Then everything starts to unravel and Blaise can't keep her two worlds separate anymore. A beautiful young anchorwoman is hired at the network; it is no secret that she is being groomed to take Blaise's place. Her career as she has known it is threatened, and her previously well-ordered life feels totally out of control. For the first time, Blaise's life is not perfect, but real.

In this unforgettable tale, the incomparable Danielle Steel has written a novel that pulsates with emotion and honesty as three people face the truth about themselves. A Perfect Life is about what we do when facades fall away and we can no longer run from the truth.

Did I mention the narrative was redundant? But that's probably not the worst of it. The worst was the flat, non-developed characters and a story line that was incredibly predictable.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Middlemarch, A Study of Provincial Life is a novel by English author George Eliot, first published in eight instalments (volumes) during 1871–2. The novel is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch during 1829–32, and it comprises several distinct (though intersecting) stories and a large cast of characters. Significant themes include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education. Although containing comical elements, Middlemarch is a work of realism that refers to many historical events: the 1832 Reform Act, the beginnings of the railways, the death of King George IV, and the succession of his brother, the Duke of Clarence (the future King William IV). In addition, the work incorporates contemporary medical science and examines the deeply reactionary mindset found within a settled community facing the prospect of unwelcome change. Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe is the third novel by George Eliot, published in 1861. An outwardly simple tale of a linen weaver, it is notable for its strong realism and its sophisticated treatment of a variety of issues ranging from religion to industrialisation to community. The novel is set in the early years of the 19th century. Silas Marner, a weaver, is a member of a small Calvinist congregation in Lantern Yard, a slum street in an unnamed city in Northern England. He is falsely accused of stealing the congregation's funds while watching over the very ill deacon. Two clues are given against Silas: a pocket knife, and the discovery in his own house of the bag formerly containing the money. There is the strong suggestion that Silas' best friend, William Dane, has framed him, since Silas had lent his pocket knife to William shortly before the crime was committed. Silas is proclaimed guilty. The woman Silas was to marry breaks their engagement and later marries William. With his life shattered and his heart broken, Silas leaves Lantern Yard and the city.

From Library Journal Though not out of print, this popular title is being added to the venerable "Modern Library" line to coincide with a PBS Masterpiece Theatre miniseries. Along with the full text, this edition includes an introduction by A.S. Byatt. All that for $15 makes this a bargain.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "No Victorian novel approaches Middlemarch in its width of reference, its intellectual power, or the imperturbable spaciousness of its narrative."--V. S. Pritchett

Review "Broadview Press and editor Gregory Maertz have produced a text whose rich but judicious contextual annotation, notably highlighting Eliot's deep immersion in German culture, makes this a crucial edition of what is arguably the greatest Victorian novel of them all." (Michael McKeon )"Gregory Maertz's fine new edition of Middlemarch allows readers to consider the novel in relation to a range of documents—reviews and other writings by George Eliot, contemporary reviews of the novel, and contextual material. This additional material both enriches our reading of the novel and its concerns and expands our knowledge of the period." (Mark Turner )

It took awhile to get into it because there's a great deal of expository writing at the beginning, but stick with it and you'll be introduced to some fascinating characters in the town of Middlemarch.Dorothea Brooke is a young woman about to take a much older husband, determined to find purpose in her life by assisting him with his life's work, a book which is to a definitive guide to all the mythologies of the world. When she begins to suspect her husband's work is little more than empty piffle, how will she find her way?Mr. Lydgate is a hotshot young physician determined to do great works from the small town of Middlemarch. Thwarted by small town suspicion and politics, and increasingly saddled by debt incurred by a pretty young wife, how will he cope as his life's dream slips away?Fred Vincy is the son of a town merchant determined to see him made a gentleman. He's paid for Fred to recieve a gentleman's education at Oxford with the intention that Fred will join the Church. Fred knows the Church isn't for him, but isn't sure what else to do, nor how to tell his father his education was for naught. These are just three of a huge cast of characters, all of them fascinating in their own way as their lives intersect. The book feels more like a documentary than a novel, and you grow to feel as if the characters could be your own friends and neighbors. Highly recommended, I know this is going to be one of my favorite books.

This is the greatest novel written in English By Joanna Daneman Yes, that is a strong statement, but I believe Middlemarch to be the best novel written in English. And English is a rich language, overflowing with worthy works from both sides of the Atlantic, India and beyond. The only novel as a close contender on my list is Jane Eyre, with its fearsome symmetry and romantic passion.George Eliot has been the bane of students everywhere who suffer reading Silas Marner in high school. But later on, you, like me, may develop a taste for the classics and this book will reward you richly. The story is about Dorothea, a young, idealist woman, born to a good family with a modest fortune of her own. She is a prime catch on the wife market--money, family name, good looks. Her parents are deceased and her friends and uncle seek to pair her up with a local baron as the ideal mate. But Dorothea, bookish, religious and dreamy, has other ideas. She chooses, instead, a superannuated cleric who finally decides to marry as he feels mortality and ill health upon him. Casaubon, the vicar of a nearby rural church is a good match except....he's old, ugly and what the heck is he doing marrying such a young beauty. But Dorothea, who's imagining a sort of superior father figure who could "teach you even Hebrew, if you wished it" wakes up to far less than a reality of marital bliss. And there's an added complication created by her unworthy husband that has dire consequences for the young Dorothea. The subsequent examination of marriage as a partnership in hell is written with stunning modernity. Eliot not only creates the disastrous marriage of Dorothea to Casaubon, but also pairs, as a comparison, Lydgate, a doctor and his frivolous, vain, uncaring wife. The relationship of marriage to society is never more well drawn, but the internal suffering of people trapped in loveless marriage is written with sympathy and cunning insight. Eliot herself had a live-in relationship with Henry Lewes, who could not divorce his wife. She undoubtedly wrote from personal experience. The insight into human nature, such as jealousy, disappointment, recrimination, loss of trust and a feeling of desperation are themes that anyone who has ever been in a relationship will recognize as truth. If you find classic literature hard going, watch the mini-series created based on the book. Then, knowing the general plot, you might enjoy the structure and language of the novel more.

It was so very thick, the print so small, the pages so thin! It looked dauntingly long and dull. But when I finally picked it up out of a sense of obligation (after all, I majored in English, and it is a highly acclaimed classic) I was amazed to find myself laughing out loud on the very first page!Dorothea, Eliot's heroine, is SO very earnest, SO idealistic and ardent! She would never be so tawdry as to fuss with her hair and dress, or wear (gasp!) jewelry in public! She is interested only in bettering the lives of the poor in their neighborhood (you could visualize her at the fore of a modern anti-war protest). But when her sister draws her into trying on their mother's old jewelry, the pure beauty of an emerald ring inspires her to decisively choose it as her own. And she stubbbornly ignores any inconsistency between that decision and her ideals. But her idealism traps her into marriage with a man who is not at all what she believes. She sees him as a paragon of learning, questing the seas of knowledge with fearless curiousity. In actuality, he turns out to be a cautious and small-minded scholar, drily obsessed with minor points of criticism on others works. Poor Dorothea strives to find ways to hold constant in her love in the face of ugly truth. And when she meets young Will Ladislaw, a man of similar idealism and energy, she fights to stay on her moral high ground. Thank goodness the dry old scholar dies! But even after death, he manages to poison the possibility of Dorothea and Will ever making a life together.Around this couple swarm their relatives and acquaintances, and others quests for their best lives. Each couple and each character is amusing and absorbing in their own way.Eliot's characters are introduced and drawn so very well that each personality is fully believable and real. But beyond that, Eliot looks at all of them, the best and the worst, from a viewpoint of loving and gentle amusement. Her pithy comments are hilarious, but never malicious. She draws the reader into her own frame of mind, and invites us to look at the variety of our fellow humans with compassion and laughter. In spite of its length, and several dizzy plunges into despair, this is a light and lively story, very readable and heartwarming.

Instead of presenting a fantasy, he presents these characters in a sobering yet optimistically relating way. He uses common struggles that many Am-Ericans face today and works it into a good plot, relying on fleshed-out characters and great storytelling ability to propel the events in the book. This is in stark contrast to much of what is promoted as "Black" America's drama novels, which relies too much on the shock value of street literature with devastating, almost cartoonish levels of drama, bad luck, and cynical themes (with poorly-fleshed out characters and minimal, if any, personal reflection or maturation for the characters). Shawn James is definitely an underrated and slept-on author and from how well his writing is, as lest from my perspective, he is definitely worthy of being a best-seller.

I'm sure the author's intentions are good. Maybe you can call it a different kind of a writing style. The work is free on the day that I'm writing this review, but no matter, others will sample this piece free or not. If you can sit and read through a few errors, this is for you. I could not.

Love on Rockwell Island is a new contemporary romance series from New York Times and USA Today best-selling authors Bella Andre and Melissa Foster.

Sink your toes into the sandy beaches at the heart of Cape Cod Bay, where family comes first, good friends are around every corner, and true love is waiting beneath the stars. When Quinn Rockwell left Rockwell Island a decade ago to build a shipping empire, he never thought he'd return to live on Cape Cod Bay - that is, until his grandfather summons Quinn and his four siblings to take over the prestigious Rockwell Resort.

Quinn is already working 15-hour days, and the last thing he has time for is his grandfather's demands. But on his first night back, when Quinn finds a gorgeous and carefree woman skinny-dipping in his favorite cove, he's tempted to ignore his work for a while and focus on her instead.

As a free spirit who follows her heart and her dreams, Shelley Walters is not the kind of girl to wait around for Mr. Right, so she heads to Rockwell Island for the honeymoon of her dreams - a solo honeymoon. Ready for a week of sun and fun, she never expected to meet a man like Quinn Rockwell. Wealthy and intensely driven, Quinn is everything Shelley swore she didn't want. Refreshingly spontaneous and a true romantic, Shelley is everything Quinn never knew he needed.

Drawn together despite their differences, during a week of sizzling-hot passion and deep conversations, they fall head over heels for each other. But when their perfect week on the island is over, will their love survive in the real world?

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Cape Cod Kisses By Donna Ferriola This was a sweet book about a loving family and it centered on Quinn Rockwell and Shelley Walters. Shelley decided to go on a honeymoon by herself to Rockwell Island Resort and booked the honeymoon cottage. She owned a coffee shop in Maryland so this was a vacation that she really needed and earned with all her hard work. She was talking to her friend who convinced her to loosen up and even have an island fling and she thought she would give it a try. She drank some champagne and decided to go skinny dipping in a cove that was near her cottage when Quinn came upon her. He had been out for a run and went to his favorite cove. Seeing him she went under the water and he thought she was drowning so he went in and picked her up to save her. She had to explain to him she was not drowning while he was holding her naked body in his arms. This is how the story starts with workaholic Quinn learning about relaxing and enjoying life from Shelley who never thought anyone would love her just the way she was. This is a story of a family coming back together to save their family business the Rockwell Resort after fleeing it to become successful businessmen on their own. Their grandfather threatened to sell if they did not come back and take over to turn things around in one year's time. Shelley found a place she could truly call home in Cape Cod and decided to relocate her coffee shop here. Quinn found a piece of himself that was missing from his life with her love to make him complete. She taught him to take life and enjoy every minute instead of constantly working. How they found their happily ever after in such a short time was very romantic to read about. I really liked the rest of the Rockwell family, Sierra, Trent, Derek and look forward to reading how they each find love in upcoming books.

CAPE COD KISSES has everything you could ever want in the By Under The Covers Book Blog Reviewed by Annie and posted at Under The Covers Book BlogIf you’re looking for your next summer vacation read, look no further. CAPE COD KISSES has everything you could ever want in the perfect beach read.Melissa Foster is not an author I’ve had the pleasure of reading yet so I was thrilled to hear that she was writing something with Bella Andre, who happens to be one of my favorite authors. While I can pick out Andre’s touches here and there throughout the novel, there were enough differences from Andre’s own books that I found in this one that I really enjoyed and I think I can attribute those touches to Foster.Family is something that Andre’s stresses a lot in her books so it’s really no surprise that the Rockwell family are a tight group. However, that isn’t to say that everything is perfectly fine between them. When their grandfather drops a bomb on them, the Rockwells will have to gather and decide on their next plan of action because now everything lies in her hands. I personally love this touch to the story because it just adds another layer to the romance although I will admit that there are some times when I think it draws away from the romance at times.Speaking of the romance, Shelley Walters doesn’t actually have any in her life which is the reason she is at the island. In fact, she’s there on her solo honeymoon and when she stumbles upon Quinn Rockwell while a little tipsy, Quinn is unable to lend a helping hand to make sure she gets home safely after her little skinny dipping session.Quinn and Shelley are absolutely adorable together. I loved reading about them. There are so many sweet moments between them but that is also interspersed with various experiences that focus more on the island and the people who live there. You can tell that Foster and Andre are looking to make this series a long one. So far, five books are already scheduled to be released and I can already see the possibilities with a lot of the characters. Fans of Toni Blake’s Coral Cove series will definitely get a kick out of this one!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful start to what promises to be a fantastic collaboration by two of the best romance authors By Barb Cape Cod Kisses by Bella Andre & Melissa Foster is the 1st book in their new series, Love on Rockwell Island. I was so excited to have found out that Bella and Melissa were going to collaborate on a romance series together. Both of them are the best at wonderful sweet family oriented romances, and with them working together, this had to be something awesome. I am thrilled to say I was right, Cape Cod Kisses was a wonderful sweet, sexy, and fun read, with a great couple and secondary characters. We meet our heroine, Shelley Walters almost immediately, as she arrives on Rockwell Island for a much needed vacation. Shelley runs a coffee café in Maryland, and comes from a wealthy but distant family. After listening to many of her customers talk about their honeymoons, she decides to go on her own “solo honeymoon” to Rockwell Resort. Shelley is not interested in looking for a man, and just wants to have a 7 day sun and fun, and maybe letting herself go doing what she normally does not do. Late at night on the beach, she decides to skinny dip in the ocean, thinking no one will see her.Quinn Rockwell has been forced home with his siblings to attend a meeting called by their grandfather. Quinn is a workaholic, having successfully built a shipping company, which keeps him busy, and away from Rockwell Island. Going for a run on the beach to clear his head, he sees a beautiful girl swimming naked in the water. As she stumbles, he runs to her rescue. This is how it starts….a couple that will win your heart immediately. I absolutely loved Quinn and Shelley together, and adored how their relationship quickly built to a hot and steamy romance. Both are wealthy, independent and in jobs they love; yet they come from different backgrounds. Quinn has a big family; they are close and care about each other. Shelley is an only child, and comes from a family that is snobbish and not affectionate at all; causing her to not be around her parents, and to avoid relationships with wealthy families. But Shelley will see a different type of family with the Rockwells, something she has always wanted all her life.Quinn is immediately entranced by the lovely free spirited Shelley, and finds himself rediscovering life on Rockwell Island, his family and his heart. What follows is a beautiful romance that brings together two different people, who we know are truly destined to be together.Shelley is only on Rockwell Island for 7 days, but she is falling in love with the island and Quinn. Will she stay? Quinn has a major deal in the works that requires him to go back fast. Will he be able to offer Shelley something more than a long distance relationship? Why did the grandfather call them all home, and how will it affect them all? You need to read this book to find out all the answers.Cape Cod Kisses is a delightful, enjoyable and fun story that will have you not only fall in love with Quinn and Shelley, but also with the entire Rockwell family. I enjoyed this book so much I finished it in one day; which should not be a surprise, as it is written by two fantastic authors, who know how to give us heartwarming love stories. Love on Rockwell Island promises to be a fabulous series, and I am anxiously awaiting more stories on the fabulous Rockwell family. I suggest you start with the first book, Cape Cod Kisses.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel. Written between October 1845 and June 1846, Wuthering Heights was published in 1847 under the pseudonym "Ellis Bell"; Brontë died the following year, aged 30. Wuthering Heights and Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey were accepted by publisher Thomas Newby before the success of their sister Charlotte's novel, Jane Eyre. After Emily's death, Charlotte edited the manuscript of Wuthering Heights, and arranged for the edited version to be published as a posthumous second edition in 1850. Villette /viːˈlɛt/ is an 1853 novel by Charlotte Brontë. After an unspecified family disaster, the protagonist Lucy Snowe travels from England to the fictional French-speaking city of Villette to teach at a girls' school, where she is drawn into adventure and romance. Villette was Charlotte Brontë's fourth novel. It was preceded by the posthumously published The Professor, her first, and then by Jane Eyre and Shirley.

Wuthering Heights And Villette: Color Illustrated, Formatted for E-Readers (Unabridged Version), by Emily Brontë, Charlotte Bronte

From Publishers Weekly The main drama in Bronte's novel happens in a long narrative told by an elderly housekeeper to a convalescing new tenant. This story-within-a-story setup makes it well suited for audio adaptation, as Scales takes the housekeeper's part and relates the past, while West performs as the tenant and describes the present. Scales primarily uses a folksy lower-class accent, but she also makes her voice harsh and threatening when speaking as Heathcliff, the surly man at the novel's heart. West, as the bewildered tenant, manages to sound both nervous and pretentious, but his part is fairly small, especially with this abridgment, so he mostly serves to provide transitions for the housekeeper's story. The extensive abridgment generally deletes sentences and phrases rather than entire paragraphs or sections. One drawback for the audio format is the difficulty of clarifying the novel's convoluted plot and family tree, since it's harder to search back through long CD tracks than through earlier chapters of the paperback. While a little of the depth of Bronte's writing is lost in abridgment, the novel's emotional core remains intact and wrenching, and the actors' heartfelt interpretations make it easy to imagine being curled up by a warm fire listening to an absorbing tale. In June, Penguin Audio remastered and released on CD for the first time nine other Penguin Classics: Crime and Punishment, Dracula, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Tale of Two Cities. From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up—This audio version of Emily Bronte's classic is narrated by Ann Flosnik. Initially, her narration makes it difficult to distinguish between characters, but as the tale progresses, her vocal characterizations become more dramatic and unique for each character, drawing listeners deeper and deeper into this dark and brooding love story. The first disk of the set also contains a PDF ebook of the full text of the novel which can be downloaded. Some students will want to read along with the narrated version, while others can use the ebook as a reference tool for class assignments. A nice addition to classic literature collections and a good way to enhance the English curriculum.—Anita Lawson, Otsego High School, Otsego, MI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review "It is as if Emily Brontë could tear up all that we know human beings by, and fill these unrecognizable transparencies with such a gust of life that theytranscend reality."--Virginia Woolf

227 of 250 people found the following review helpful. The only edition to buy By Joseph Guyer This review is aimed more toward the Norton edition than to JANE EYRE. We all know this is a classic. Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

205 of 230 people found the following review helpful. wuthering heights editions By Jordi Vilalta Lopez Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation, excellent introduction.2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on theClarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in toomany of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best. There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.
