“Simultaneously engaging, heart wrenching and all consuming!”

Jackie Moretti always believed in fairy tale endings. But what happens when the fairy tale ends and real life begins? Coming of age in the early 1970s… she’s caught between the world of Ozzie and Harriet and the Age of Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll. When her world abruptly cracks in two, Jackie is forced to deal with the consequences of soul-shattering deception if she’s ever to find love again.

Sexy, motorcycle riding mechanic, Michael Nowak recognizes Jackie’s vulnerability from their first encounter grabbing her attention and not letting go. The small-time drug dealer provides both intoxicating sex and drugs to distract her from her crumbling life. As their feelings grow from lust to love, Michael gets roped into a larger scale criminal operation than he ever thought possible.

Can they save each other and overcome the struggles of the heart or will their world consume them?

About the Author I’m a first time author, but long term creative. After earning my MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I spent most of my career working in social services, while dabbling in the arts on the side. During that time, I found myself in a place where I needed to know something about accounting – before long, one accounting course turned into an MBA and I was headed down a new road. My life has not been planned. All the roads I’ve taken have zig-zagged between the creative and the analytical realities that surrounded me. No matter what happened, though, there has always been one constant – without fail, I found myself recreating reality in my mind, or in other words – making things up the way I wish they had been. As people or situations entered or exited from my realm, the stories I ran over and over in my mind became more detailed and real to me. But never once did I give a single thought to putting any of them down on paper. I didn’t write; I created with glass, metal, fiber, paper, anything that caught my fancy, except words. Then one day something changed, a familiar pattern emerged, but this time, words were my medium of choice. Before I knew it, the beginnings of Love’s Illusions were forming on my computer. The more I typed – the more I enjoyed it. The pieces of my story were taking form as surely as if they were a piece of sculpture. I love this incarnation! I hope you will too. Jackie’s story will help you to better understand your mother or grandmother By a grateful reader This is a story made most compelling by its honesty. Jackie develops of heavy dose of self-knowledge as her story unfolds and she is not afraid to share it. That makes her completely believable and it's her truthfulness that draws us in. If you came of age in the 60’s and 70’s as Jackie did, you’ll recognize the widespread social tensions that challenged our culture and our families as changing attitudes about the role of women, sexuality, drugs, and politics caused the world to shift beneath our feet. If you did not, Jackie’s story will help you to better understand your mother or grandmother, or maybe just a bit more about those turbulent years in American culture. This is a strong first novel by a talented writer. I look forward to where Jackie goes next.

By Cecelia Zucconi It can be difficult reading a story where the main character is clinically depressed; however, for anyone who has ever been depressed, the writer does a superb job illustrating it. I though the story was great and you could really get a good sense of what was going on in Jackie's head. Unlike a lot of romance novels that I read, the characters weren't completely one-dimensional, so that was very refreshing! I also like that the main character, Jackie wasn't perfect. So often in stories, writers try to make the main character perfect with only a minor flaw that she thinks is a big deal but no one else does. I loved that Jackie had real problems; it made her feel like she could actually be a real person. Being a millennial, it was interesting reading a story that takes place in the early 70s. There were a lot of terms and drugs, I must confess, I had to google.I overall liked the character Jackie, but she often says that she's a feminist, and then constantly blames herself for the mistakes of the men in her life and depends on men to make her happy/functioning; that got a bit frustrating after a while, but you could see how her childhood caused her to be bad at communicating and a bit backwards in thinking.Overall very interesting and enjoyable read! I'd recommend it!

The day she returns from her mother's funeral, Georgina discovers her husband Colin's affair. A remote Englishman, he is unsympathetic to the fact that Georgina’s world has been capsized by the death of both her parents and her daughter, Kate’s, suicidal depression. Already down on her hands and knees, fighting for her child’s life, Colin’s affair lands Georgina face down in the mud. As Kate grows sicker and nothing helps, Georgina descends into a nightmare world where all her assumptions about reality are exploded as she turns for help to an intuitive in Minnesota, a Peruvian archangel channel, an Irish mystic and her own dreams. Georgina is mystical, Kate is practical. Where Georgina rushes in guided by intuition, Kate thinks things through, observing and sensing their pulse. Only love for her mother keeps Kate from taking her own life, when all she wants, is to beg for death, to end the unbearable pain. Four women support them on their journey. It is articulate hardboiled Emma, an obituary writer for The Times, who perpetually goads Georgina in the role of side kick and commentator. The wisdom of the crone is offered by Georgina's 80 year old friend Selma. Selma is the daughter of a black share cropper raised in the South before the Civil Rights Act. When Georgina says "If Kate dies, I will die. Did you know love can kill?" Selma tells her "pull up your socks girl, you got to pull up your socks and help your child.” And it is Carrie, the etherial horse therapist, who, when fear grips Georgina by the throat, stealing her voice, reminds her, "worrying is like praying for what you don't want.” And then, there is Julia, Georgina's younger sister. It is Julia who has always sweetened Georgina's life. But it is Julia, and not Kate, who will be sacrificed to death before the story ends. As the book moves forward into the present, six years after Kate’s confrontation with death, she is married to Finn and living in Okinawa, Japan, working as a graphic novelist. Finn is in Air Force special forces. Kate also has a friend, Lydia, who like Kate, is a military wife. But unlike Kate, Lydia, has never been able to be authentic even with herself. There are four men in the book. Cyrus is Kate's father and Georgina's exotic, handsome, Persian ex-husband. Colin is Georgina's most recent husband and the villain in the group. He's self-centered and disloyal, but unfortunately also smart, funny and sexy. He doesn't even pretend support as he burns the house down and poisons the well. Matthew is a nuclear physicist and Georgina's final love. He arrives in the twilight hour of her life and carries her home to herself. Kate's husband, Finn, is all American, full of testosterone, good will and tenderness, and he looks like James Dean. After her near death, it is Finn who calls Kate's Soul back into being. As the characters hurdle along through the story bumping up against one another, each has flashes of insight, but it is only Georgina and Kate who experience the full catastrophe of the human condition and see the blinding beauty in it. Their journey into suffering and their acceptance of it, becomes a thousand allumettes which light up the inner landscape of their lives, altering them forever.

The Path Has Heart By David Buskin Disclosure #1: The author is a friend.Disclosure #2: I approached this book with a certain degree of trepidation. When you read the work of a friend, you very much want it to be good, or at least good enough that you don’t have to lie through your teeth when you praise it to them. Plus, in this case, I feared it might possibly be a tough read, because Dr. Plunket and I experience the world in very different ways. I prepared myself for a slog through impenetrable (to me) forests of Jungian psychology with assorted mythic apps like healing-at-a-distance, past and future lives, wise and powerful animals, trees with souls, the whole gamut. The author is a highly respected, much-sought-after therapist, with a bottomless empathy gene, but it’s not too much of a stretch to say she’s never met a crystal she doesn’t like.However.If being a proficient novelist turns in large part on creating breathing, compelling characters, putting them into challenging high-stakes situations and making their inner process manifest so that we take the journey with them and care very much about what happens to them, Susan Plunket, in her first venture into fiction, demonstrates a veteran's mastery of the genre. What I feared might be over-the-top philosophizing has instead been alchemically transformed into finely wrought - fascinating - aspects of character. The ideas live because the people to whom they matter do also. This is nowhere more evident than in the protagonists’ battles with suffering and despair, betrayal and loss, as they struggle to go from shadow into light. Life has nasty surprises waiting for all of us, and the way we deal with them - more than anything else, I think - defines who we are. And the way they are dealt with in When Every Breath Becomes a Prayer made the book, for this reader, impossible to put down. I hope the author will write more fiction; true, it might take some time away from her profession of healing, but psychology’s loss will be literature’s gain.

Ms. Plunket has a great way of drawing the reader into the story line. I felt as though I was right there with the characters. For me this book is a wonderful testament to the power of love and faith and how our beliefs can help us along our path.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fasten your seatbelt ... By Georgia James Susan Plunket's book is a poetic roller coaster, a wholly original ride you almost believe was actually devised by some other-worldly intelligence - assuming that intelligence was not only wise but also kind. And with a wicked sense of humor. Plus a killer instinct for zeroing in on the essence of human character. Is love even possible when we are all so fragile and flawed? How can one bear heartbreak upon heartbreak and still maintain our sanity? Are we mere fumbling mortals, destined to be defeated by the dark powers that betray us? Is hope too flimsy a garment to wear onto the battlefield of life - or is it really woven of steely stuff, something akin to courage? The intertwined stories of mother Georgina in New York and daughter Kate in Okinowa unfurl with such delicious, almost easy grace that you want to savor each chapter. Sometimes you may need to stop and let the dust settle in your brain after a particularly harrowing passage. (Dr. Plunket knows the landscape of the suffering human heart better than most; you'll be glad to have such an experienced guide when the story ventures into the depths of despair - and back out again, thank the gods!) In the end, I hope you will feel as I did: enlightened, entertained and even comforted by the book's heart and wisdom - and with a renewed appetite for the fray of life. Loved. This. Book.

Valley This was a mostly enjoyable story, but had a hero who needed to be kicked to the curb--after he was kicked on the shins a few times. I know I'm overly fond of shin kicks, but sometimes you just keep running into people who need their shins kicked. It's not my fault, really. So, this is a heroine who comes from an abusive, alcoholic and drug abusing mother who makes her living getting pregnant and blackmailing her wealthy and married lovers to keep their wives from finding out they've been straying. The heroine has managed to extract herself from this toxic environment and make something of herself by opening and running an upscale boutique and continues to keep an eye on her younger half-sister who is still with their shared mother. She fell in love and moved in with the man (our hero) who put up the money for her start up and remains a silent partner in her business. Opposed to their relationship is the hero's mentor who seems to hate the heroine and is not shy about letting her know she is not worthy of the hero's attentions whenever he is not around. The plot thickens here. When the sister calls the heroine for help, she is forced to step between her sister and her mother who likes to make her points to her daughters by slapping them around. Both escape the mother with some bruises and the heroine brings her sister to the penthouse she shares with the hero while she sorts out the sister's problems. However the younger sister is pregnant, a fact the heroine confirms with a test and both the mother and the baby's father want her sister to terminate the pregnancy, neither care what the sister wants. The heroine waits for the man she loves to come home so she can consult with him and get his opinion on how best to protect her sister's future. Boy, does she get a surprise. The hero finds the pregnancy test first and draws some ugly conclusions. He confronts the heroine and accuses her of trying to trap him, just as his mentor said she would, and lets her know in gutter terms what he thinks of her, that he is aware of her family situation--courtesy of his mentor, that he will remove the child from such a grasping and unworthy mother and then slams out. The stunned heroine does what any self-respecting woman would do, she leaves. The hero returns the next day to apologize, but it's too late--she's gone and she intends to stay gone. He spends a year trying to get her back and explain, that he really didn't mean it when he was telling her what a no account, low life, scum of the earth wh@re (ammy restriction) she was. It seems some people just take these kinds of things so personally. That is where the book begins. The hero is stalking the heroine in a very genteel, upper class way trying to get her to relent; she is avoiding him whenever possible and has relocated her sister from New York to Texas to keep her out of their mother's orbit and is considering moving there herself; and, oh yeah, the hero's mentor still hates her--really REALLY hates her. At least now she knows why, he is her father and has been blackmailed since the heroine's birth by mommy to finance her habit. Her mother thinks it's a fine joke. The sister is killed by a drunk driver, leaving the heroine bereft and the custodian of a young baby. Hero steps into the breach to try and win some forgiveness points. The mentor throws a spanner into the works by withholding further money from mommy unless the heroine stops seeing the hero, so mommy decides she may as well try for custody of the baby for what she can get from her daughter. Hero makes his move by telling the heroine they must marry in order to stave off the custody bid. Daddy/mentor blows and hero catches him beating the heroine and has to rescue her. Lots of excitement, but it falls apart a little here.At the hospital, where a bruised and traumatized heroine needs some support the hero...yells at her for not telling him the mentor was his father and leaves her there, alone. He hires bodyguards and insists heroine and baby move back into his penthouse but otherwise ignores the heroine, then he leaves when they get there. When the heroine tries to call him, he tells her not to bother him and hangs up. After a week of this, the heroine finds her spine again and leaves for Texas. At this point, the "child becomes seriously ill and has to be rushed to the hospital to allow the hero to reinsert himself without having the heroine flatten his head with a skillet" plot device is rolled out. While the heroine is with her niece, prior to the hero's tardy arrival, she learns that her mother is dead of an overdose. Another blow for her to absorb, but it has a silver lining. She takes this as a sign that she no longer needs to marry the hero and gives him back his ring when he finally makes an appearance. Since she was in a hospital with witnesses and there was no skillet handy, it's probably the best she could do under the circumstances. If it were me, I'd probably start toting around a larger bag so I could have that skillet handy cuz she's going to need it since this hero seems to react to crises by yelling at the heroine and running away for a while. The rest of the tale consists of the hero convincing the heroine he loves her and insisting, "he never meant to be away so long she thought he was never coming back." Really?!?Don't get me wrong, it was a very interesting book and I enjoyed it (although I really wanted this guy's shins kicked), but I thought the ending was weak. The heroine had been strong in not taking the hero's...solid waste product (another ammy concession) for the first offense, but let him talk her around after the second, and in my opinion, worse offense. Maybe she was getting tired, maybe she was still shell shocked from everything, but he needed to work harder to regain his ground. That's why it's not a five star. For those who are sensitive to sexual situations, yes there is some sex. There is not a lot of sex and it's relatively mild, but it's there. The text is almost entirely free of typos, a big thank you for that and there was angst coming out all the character's ears for those who are looking for it. With a stronger ending, it would have been better, but it was still a very decent read. If only the hero had received some kicks...maybe next time.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. on the fence By Ana RC This was a tough book to like. On one hand I loved how he pursued her and tried to get her forgiveness. But just as things get better another problems comes up and he act like a total jerk. My gosh she was attacked and injured and he is mad at her. I love happy endings but part of me wanted her to dump him. The book did keep my interest but the love interest didn't.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. 2 1/3 Stars By Robin Wilson This has all the elements for a gripping story: girl from the wrong side of the tracks who makes good; rich, powerful guy; cute baby; drunken mother; evil father, etc. So what needs to be there to make it successful?First, the author needs to brush up on her verb tenses, especially the "perfect," to make the references less jarring. The writing is quite choppy at times. Second, the heroine runs hot and cold towards the hero, and he is the same towards her. One minute they're panting after each other; the next, they're throwing distrust left and right. Third, the baby seems to be the big draw at making them a couple--"instalove" once he meets her. SPOILER+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Why then, does the hero abandon her and the baby for a week at a time whenever something upsets him? He does this even after the h has been attacked by someone close to both of them. The baby has just lost her mother. Wouldn't he realize that security is especially important? Stick around for crying out loud! Why 2 1/3 Stars? Weird rating, I know, but I finished it even though I wanted to hurl it across the room several times. I would even be wiling to read it again if it undergoes editing.

Like them, Potholm has an ear for By John Christie With this delightful book, Chris Potholm joins the distinguished pantheon of Maine yarn-spinners that includes such luminaries as Holman Day and John Gould.Like them, Potholm has an ear for, and a sensitivity to, the unique Maine vernacular; the sometimes mystifying sense of humor; and the always apparent love and respect we Mainers have for our friends and neighbors who, in the words of fellow Mainer and poet, Robert P. T. Coffin, are “our kindred and our kind...whose bodies always lean towards the blow.”Potholm spins tales that not only ring true to folks like me who've spent a lifetime listening to and attempting to share the stories that are told around campfires, in duck blinds and over the hoods of pickup trucks at the dump (aka transfer station), but folks “from away” will get a real taste of Maine life as they immerse themselves in his stories, as I enjoyably did for hours on end.Lots of writers have come close to, but missed the mark, attempting to tell Maine stories in an authentic manner. They generally resort to characterizing us with the typical Maine stereotype that we natives find not only well off the mark, but demeaning and offensive. Not Potholm. His new book hits it over the Green Monster. If you think you know Maine, you'll learn when you read this captivating collection of stories from this unique corner of the country that there's a whole world just below the surface that the occasional visitor never sees and that captures the real condition of the, again Coffin, “cheerful, crystal people” who populate this corner of the world.

It's use of colloquial expressions and vivid descriptions lets the reader feel the scenery and the action. Although I've never hunted and I'm female, I could still get into these tales about the wilderness, hunting and fishing. I did learn a few things about hunting and fishing in Maine. I also learned some of the terms they use. This could be helpful one day. At the end of the book, the author states he was several other tales to tell. I'm looking forward to his next book. In the meantime, I will reread some of these tales several times, because they do make me laugh outloud. I would recommend this book for anyone, who wants to read stories about Maine guides, hunting in Maine, fishing in Maine, and what life is really like in the backwoods.

If you want a fresh, funny and straight-shooting account of the lives and lingo of the special breed of outdoorsmen who become Maine guides, this is the book for you. Mr. Potholm, once a Maine guide himself, unveils a candid and hilarious portrait of Big Gus and Snap, two quick-witted pathfinders of Mother Nature and their encounters with all kinds of various species, not only grouse, moose and striped bass but an assortment of well-to-do "sports" from "away" (ie; New York and Boston) who hire them. It is a singular sub-culture and Potholm captures its characters and idiosyncracies with skill and true Down east humor.
