Great Conclusion To The Trilogy By Simone Having first met Isobel and her family in Distance and followed them through Further, it was lovely to round out the trilogy with Surfacing. There is a larger time gap between the second and third books, with Surfacing taking place several years after Further. With her kids out of school and off her hands this should be a great time in Isobel's life, but sadly life has conspired to make it very challenging. While she is doing her best to put on a brave face, Isobel is slowly crumbling under the weight of grief and emptiness and is even questioning if staying in Australia is the best thing for her.As with the other two books in the series Nene Davies takes the reader on quite a journey with well drawn characters and vivid descriptive prose that draws you right into the story. Many different themes are explored in a realistic way, in particular the important (and often ignored) issue of mental health as well as the difficulty of having a loved one serving in the armed forces. It has been great to see Nene's development as a writer over the span of the series and I do feel a bit sad that Surfacing is the last we will see of the Richardson family. If you have read the other two Distance series books, you have to finish with Surfacing. If you haven't yet embarked on the trilogy jump aboard and know you have three great books to look forward to.

By Carole 'Surfacing', the third and final book in Nene Davies’ Distance series, takes Isobel Richardson, a Welsh immigrant, along a pathway of sometimes shocking new challenges, soul-searching, and self-discovery. As ever, the author excels in nailing the fine details that make this story larger than life, as we feel with Isobel both the pain and the joy of events facing her, her family and her friends, in this Australian land that she had always wanted to come to. In other words- have your hanky ready. There is somewhat of a shift in the tone of this book- the children have matured and Issy herself seems to have sharpened her responses to people and situations, but Nene’s easy style and crisp humour makes this book hard to put down, in the race to find out how each of life’s twists and turns will be resolved for Isobel, or not. A most engaging read.

In Surfacing, her third novel of the Williams family who left Wales to settle in Australia, Davies’ protagonist, Isobel, is once again fraught with family challenges. Davies takes the reader though a rollercoaster of emotions as Isobel seeks to deal with the challenges she faces with her life and her children, while coping with her own grief. The reader empathises with Isobel as she struggles to come to terms with the barbs life has thrown at her and seeks to emerge with a positive vision for her future.

Laugh-aloud funny By HeyJudy I was reading FAST WOMEN at the beach--yes! it's a beach book--and I was laughing so hard that other women, total strangers, kept stopping by to see what I was reading with such enjoyment.I've read all of Crusie's novels. While all of them were good (obviously, or I wouldn't have bothered to keep buying them), FAST WOMEN is in a class by itself. Either Crusie has matured as an author, or her editors finally are allowing her to tell her tales as she sees fit.FAST WOMEN also could have been named SMART WOMEN. For a change, the heroine and her friends are middle-aged, and sort of battle-scarred by life--exactly as most real people are, too. This is a fast-moving story, with mystery...ex-husbands... retribution...true love...and great sex. The novel is compelling and all's well that ends well. In the process of getting to that end, yes, you'll have some good laughs.

By mirope Jennifer Crusie is one of those writers I buy the second she comes out with a new book, and this was no exception. I read it in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it. For Crusie fans, it's not as good as "Welcome to Temptation" (what could be?), but it's better than "Tell Me Lies." Crusie's trademark writing is as good as ever - hilarious dialouge, hot love scenes, well-drawn cast of leading and secondary characters, fast-paced plot. Nevertheless, this is something more than the usual contemporary romance. I thought that the mystery at the core of the plot was exceptionally good. They are usually so predictable in romance novels, but this one had some twists that kept me guessing. Second, this book is really a pretty good study of the emotional chaos created by infidelity and divorce. It takes a very honest look at the various stages women go through, including the immediate post-divorce insanity. While all of this makes for a well-rounded book, serious romance novel addicts will be disappointed that there isn't more focus on the relationship between the two lead characters.

Personally, I think that's a good thing. True....TEMPTATION is an excellent book. So is WOMEN. They're very dissimilar, thank heavens. Frankly, I get tired of the "cookie cutter" characters when an author finds a format that's selling and refuses to stray from it. Crusie gets edgy and isn't afraid to break away from the pack and FAST WOMEN reflects that break.Nell Dysart has been dumped by her husband of 22 years and with the help of her two sister-in-laws, is groping for a new life. Due to a few twist and laughable turns she finds herself working for a couple of detectives in their antiquated office that she immediately decides to update,(the office, not the detectives) but not before she has innocently managed to create even more damage. By the time she has made changes in the office she has also dug through the tough shield that the #1 detective, Gabe McKenna has shrouded himself in.Crusie developed a novel that is pure feel-good entertainment and serves up plenty of opportunities to laugh out loud. As an added bonus the reader gets to try and figure out the mystery that is brewing throughout the book. It's not heavy reading, but who wants that on lazy hot summer days? If I want to dig into WAR AND PEACE again, I'll save that for those long, dreary winter months. Until then, I'll grab every Crusie book as fast as she can turn them out.

PDF Ebook Waterman: The Life and Times of Duke Kahanamoku, by David Davis

Waterman is the first comprehensive biography of Duke Kahanamoku (1890–1968): swimmer, surfer, Olympic gold medalist, Hawaiian icon, waterman.

Long before Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz made their splashes in the pool, Kahanamoku emerged from the backwaters of Waikiki to become America’s first superstar Olympic swimmer. The original “human fish” set dozens of world records and topped the world rankings for more than a decade; his rivalry with Johnny Weissmuller transformed competitive swimming from an insignificant sideshow into a headliner event.

Kahanamoku used his Olympic renown to introduce the sport of “surf-riding,” an activity unknown beyond the Hawaiian Islands, to the world. Standing proudly on his traditional wooden longboard, he spread surfing from Australia to the Hollywood crowd in California to New Jersey. No American athlete has influenced two sports as profoundly as Kahanamoku did, and yet he remains an enigmatic and underappreciated figure: a dark-skinned Pacific Islander who encountered and overcame racism and ignorance long before the likes of Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, and Jackie Robinson.

Kahanamoku’s connection to his homeland was equally important. He was born when Hawaii was an independent kingdom; he served as the sheriff of Honolulu during Pearl Harbor and World War II and as a globetrotting “Ambassador of Aloha” afterward; he died not long after Hawaii attained statehood. As one sportswriter put it, Duke was “Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey combined down here.”

In Waterman, award-winning journalist David Davis examines the remarkable life of Duke Kahanamoku, in and out of the water.

By David I've always been aware of the legend and mythology of Duke, but in Waterman, Davis clearly defines the nuanced personality and character of one of surfings most iconic figures. It sheds light on the man himself, how Hawai'i shaped him, and how he shaped Hawai'i. Waterman is an asset and a must-read for anyone interested in surfing, Hawai'i, or simply American history. Much gratitude and thanks!

An enjoyable book By Sam Bloom David Davis's Waterman the life story of Duke Kahanamoku is a great read and well written story of the first real surfer as well as a history of early surfing. Besides the historical aspect of the story it is well researched and provides one with a pleasurable experience. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about real people.Sam Bloom

THE SADDEST SUPERHERO

I WAS LIKE MOST KIDS. I woke up on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons. A handful of them couldn’t be missed. Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! was strangely addictive despite featuring a talking dog, four teenagers who never changed their clothes, and the exact same ending to every episode: a thwarted villain saying, “I would have pulled this off without you meddling kids!” There was also Jonny Quest, an adventure series where two families traveled the globe finding evil, like the one time when they discovered the giant spider whose eye was a camera sending pictures back to the bad guy Dr. Zin. I don’t want to go too deeply into the details, but that shit was real. I followed the path of most boys, seduced into the shows that chronicled the exploits of crime fighters and superheroes. Spider-Man, Batman, the Green Lantern, Plastic Man—they all had a place in my heart. I would try to decipher in my head which one of them I would choose in a battle to the death. I would assess from all angles, analyzing strengths and weaknesses, sort of an early sabermetric version of advanced-metric cartoon analysis. As I’ve aged, I’ve come up with a superhero that would defeat them all. He isn’t very big, and he probably can’t lift so much as a couch without the help of several other people. There’s no X-ray vision, although there’s a chance he could be a recent recipient of Lasik surgery. His speed, even among the rest of his out-of-shape friends, is pedestrian. And yet this guy’s magic is undeniable. He can stop any person—even any group—in his tracks. He can petrify even the most powerful among us; he is unable to stop a steaming locomotive but perfectly capable of creating corporate chaos with just a few well-placed words. Even the other superheroes don’t dare cross him. Who is this unmasked man? How can someone be so powerful and mundane at the same time? Let me introduce you to Claiming Racism Man. The first thing you need to know is that he doesn’t need proof. He can work his magic without the benefit of evidence—no repeated actions caught on tape or in writing necessary. He can claim racism against a company without poring over recent hiring practices or disputed firings. No, the source of this superhero’s power comes from the overwhelming randomness and impulsivity of his words. If you make a claim that doesn’t fit his political leanings, you’re in danger of being targeted. It’s a bird, it’s a plane—wait, he’s not up in the sky at all. In fact, he’s writing on a blog, of all things. It’s . . . Claiming Racism Man. If you think I’m exaggerating the power of race and the irrational way in which we treat intentions that are inherently reasonable, I’ll offer you a quick and easy example. Starbucks launched a campaign in early 2015 called “Race Together,” and it was intended to decrease racial injustice and bring a better understanding of the issues affecting people of all races. Baristas, if they so desired, could add the hashtag #RaceTogether on the side of cups in hopes of sparking discussion—or even simple consideration—of the issues facing minorities. The idea was to plant the idea that no matter who you are or where you came from, we’re all in this together. There was absolutely nothing sinister at work here. Baristas weren’t instructed to take your order and proclaim, “I see you ordered another vanilla latte today. Isn’t it about time for some dark roast, if you know what I mean?” There were no reports of baristas holding out a customer’s Breakfast Blend and refusing to hand it over until the customer came up with the right answer to the question “Do you think Oprah got hosed at the Oscars?” Oh, but you wouldn’t know that from the outcry. Within a few days, we had ourselves a veritable firestorm over two voluntary words on paper coffee cups—words that, frankly, would have little or no impact on the systemic issues that create the kind of racial tension that results in the death of someone like Trayvon Martin or Michael Brown. Nobody can deny that racism exists here, or nearly anywhere. Even among the better educated, there is closeted racism, or—in the case of the most affluent among us—walk-in-closeted racism. But how did a simple campaign seeking potential civilized discourse on the subject pick up so much momentum, not to mention unmitigated scorn? I’ll tell you why: because we’re so petrified of being called a racist or forever labeled a racist that even thoughtful discourse can lead to unintentional misinterpretation or manipulation. It’s better to keep your damned mouth shut than to end up saying something that might inadvertently end with you having an exit interview in human resources forty-five minutes after you opened your mouth. Claiming Racism Man has a posse behind him, too, making him even more powerful. The racial police, often working behind the scenes in support of Claiming Racism Man, feel that they—and only they—have the superior intellect to discuss any aspect of the topic. Really? Is the club that exclusive? We have governors and presidents who make wide-ranging economic decisions affecting hundreds of millions of people without having a single professional career in their backgrounds, and yet discussions of race—the act of merely talking about the topic—should be reserved for a chosen few? The beauty of Claiming Racism Man is his dexterity. He has an amazing ability to twist and reconfigure someone’s words to unearth the hidden meanings that lie within the most innocuous comments. You want a concrete example? You’re in luck. My friend Max Bretos, a SportsCenter anchor at ESPN and one of the nicest humans I’ve ever known, used the phrase “chink in his armor” to describe a bad game by former New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin. Bretos’s comment came as Lin’s incredible surge of popularity—known as “Linsanity”—briefly dominated the New York sports scene in 2012. Claiming Racism Man leaped into the manufactured controversy, and when it was over, Bretos was handed a thirty-day suspension. Such is the power of Claiming Racism Man that nobody cared about the origins of the phrase, which dates back to the fifteenth century and has absolutely no connection to the Asian racial slur. Let me repeat: it is an innocuous phrase, no more demeaning to Asians than saying “That’s his Achilles heel” is demeaning to everyone of Greek descent. And such is the power—excuse me, superpower—of Claiming Racism Man that it didn’t seem to matter that Bretos is married to an Asian woman. His children are Asian, and somehow he’s not only a racist but a racist against Asians? Go, CRM, go. When the issue is literally black and white, African Americans often feel that Caucasians don’t understand the black experience. That may be true, and in many cases it is undeniably true, but how can anyone learn anything without discussing it? Racism—the word, not the act itself—is now a weapon used viciously and cavalierly without discretion or proof. It’s sure to get clicks on blogs and create debates on cable sports and news shows, but it has also become tired and overused. It has one purpose—Gotcha!—and it has reached the point where I become cynical before I even know the details of the story behind the claim. In the end, Claiming Racism Man uses his power to simplify a complex topic, turning it into a seventh-grade name-calling contest rather than an attempt at civic improvement. Instead of discussing policies that are institutionally racist and have generational consequences for minorities—housing discrimination, for instance, or economic redlining—we yell and point and get all worked up over isolated sentences that have no real impact beyond defaming a single and often powerless person. I should probably wrap this up now, because I think I can hear the footsteps of Claiming Racism Man as he closes in on me. It sounds dangerous, I know, but I’d love to sit down with him and examine my opinions—the ones he derides so angrily. But, alas, we know how this game works. I’m not black enough. I’m not smart enough. Claiming Racism Man’s power is exceeded only by one other quality: his ability to annoy. It’s one of the reasons Spider-Man no longer calls him a friend.

Just an easy, fun By Jeff I read Cowherd's last book in a single day so I couldn't wait for Cowherd's new book.Just an easy, fun, and thought-provoking read. I love Cowherd's radio show although I don't always get to listen to it. He's by far the best national sports talk radio and this book his a collection of essays a few pages long.It keeps you attention and makes you want to read another. This is perfect for a plane ride or just want something fun to read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Raw By J. Hamby Cowherd is someone I listened to about college football. Someone I either was shaking my head strongly in agreement or quickly turning him off. He sparks that kind of reaction.I had not read his first book so went into this having an idea that he would do the same in reading as he prompts in listening. And in some ways yes. I don't always agree with what he saws. And I always give a little side eye if humblebragging or false deprecation comes into play (in my opinion) and I have always thought Cowherd can put a chip on humility's shoulder. But this is some fun, thought provoking stuff. Again. some of the things I don't agree with. But this is a read that made me think. Gave me some validation on some issues and had me re-thinking a few opposing ideas I had with the author in a way that made me feel stronger and more confident in my stance on the matter. And I think that is what this type of book should deliver. Yes, it can be a great read when you agree with everything someone else says. But Cowherd is able to raise subjects and pull them apart in a way that keeps me engaged as a reader even when I disagree. He manages to announce his ideology without it becoming a bitter dogma unlike many who opine these days publicly.Overall I think this is an interesting read on society, not just sports. And Cowherd is deft enough to make sure that the lines between are recognized but accorded a false and overblown respect. I'm going to make sure to read his previous work and keep an eye out for his next.

Colin lays it up and out there for us sports fans. From the perspective of a "tele-jock" colin touches all the same bases he does on his daily show. From andy dalton to lebron. He's one of us. Maybe some will take the time to hear what colin preaches when he talks about what a great time we live in.He's right if iPhones were around in the sixties many of us would have had big problems. So don't be so judgmental on the younger generation that does have to deal with this.Great job colin

Whatever became of the most talented people you once knew?

On a warm summer night in 1974, six teenagers play at being cool. They smoke pot, drink vodka, share their dreams and vow always to be interesting.

Decades later, aspiring actress Jules has resigned herself to a more practical occupation, Cathy has stopped dancing, Jonah has laid down his guitar and Goodman has disappeared. Only Ethan and Ash, now married, have remained true to their adolescent dreams and have become shockingly successful too.

As the group's fortunes tilt precipitously, their friendships are put under the ultimate strain of envy and crushing disappointment.

Historical Novel of the Last Four Decades By Mary Lins I was persuaded by a group of real friends, who are also avid readers, that I should give the latest Meg Wolitzer novel, "The Interestings", a go even though I'd been disappointed by her last novel. I'm glad I listened to them! "The Interestings" is indeed interesting - AND well written, thoughtful and both witty and touching.I can make the case that "The Interestings" can be considered a historical novel of the past 4 decades; I call that "recent" history because I can remember it! Reading about the 1980s for example, brought back memories of:- the first cases of AIDS and how bewildering that was- the first cordless phones- mugger-full and dirty NYC- the first soapy taste of the now ubiquitous herb cilantro- the Moonies- "Women's Lib" being the term to describe feminismThis novel is full of such memories because it's about six friends who meet in a summer camp for artistic kids in the 70s and it follows their lives into the present, touching on each decade as they make their way to adulthood. The novel moves quickly and is never boring or slow as many things happen to each of these people as they face their lives. It felt voyeuristic - in a good way - to follow their ups and downs. I could relate because I also "grew up" at the same time. There is a bit of jumping around in time and significant foreshadowing which I found to be an effective story-telling device here. There are many "themes" in the novel; friendship, the nature of art, the meaning of "talent", loss of innocence, sexual attraction, and the relationship between art and money, to name a few. But I think the theme that interested ME the most, was the theme of envy and it's ugly and corrosive nature. When we envy our friends' successes or their material wealth, or their looks or their talents, what does that do to us and how we negotiate in the world? How does that affect our friendships and does envy actually negate true friendship? Can you envy someone you truly love?I love novels that entertain me, inform me, and that challenge me to think about things from different points of view - as through the lens of well-crafted characters. This novel gave me all of that.

I have a couple of criticisms, which I will get to, but hot damn. Meg Wolitzer has written an astonishingly clever, detailed novel, and the utmost respect must be given to that. Remember this book, because it will definitely be popping up again when people begin compiling best-of lists for 2013.But let's talk about the novel, shall we? In 1974, six teenagers meet at a summer camp for the arts and jokingly refer to themselves as The Interestings--exactly the kind of ironic, half-kidding-half-hopeful joke that captivates them at that moment in time. The six run the gamut of the art world: a dancer, a musician, an animator; an actress who wants to further the cause of feminism in theater, a wannabe architect, and a comedic actress. The latter character, Jules, forms the center of our story. Significantly, she's also the outlier. Jules isn't an artist when she ends up at Camp Spirit-in-the-Woods. It's unclear how she found her way to a camp for artists when there were so many different options out there (one of those woefully nitpicky details that nevertheless irked me); she simply wanted an escape from her family and the grief they all feel after the abrupt death of her father from cancer. What's important is that she's an outsider in this world when we first meet her, and she very much discovers herself once she has been thrust into The Interestings. She doesn't feel like she belongs but she desperately wants to. She discovers an ability to make people laugh and parlays it into a comical role in a camp play--a moment that overwhelms her with the sense that she has arrived, that she has found her life's calling.Through the course of the novel we follow The Interestings through the next forty years or so--some closely, intimately, others at a distance. And it's here that Meg Wolitzer achieves genius status in my mind. It would be tempting to call The Interestings a coming-of-age novel. It would be tempting to say that it's about success, both personal and financial, and which ultimately matters more (a la The Turning Point). It would be tempting to say it's about art: how it is expressed, how it is celebrated, and how the definition changes over time. It would be tempting to say that it's about friendship. It would even be tempting to say that it's about talent--that curious quality which can be overlooked, rejected, celebrated, and evasive. But to say any of those things would be reductive. The Interestings encapsulates all of them, but what it really seems to be about to me is life itself. Nowhere have I experienced a more profound rendering of characters moving, growing, and evolving through time. Shockingly, everything feels organic. Wolitzer has such effortless control over her narrative that nothing felt contrived. Characters age, realize how much time has gone by and how old they are in a way that resonates. Disasters strike, but they feel like the curveballs that life throws at you as time goes by (even more astonishing, the way the characters respond to these occurrences feels natural to who they are). I've read so many books that suffer from what feel like random acts of plotting; so many novels where the twists, turns, and choices feel like things that need to happen in order for the plot to move forward rather than things that do happen. By the end of the novel each character forms a palimpsest, making it possible to see all the layers of the person they have been through their lifetime. It comes as no surprise that Jeffrey Eugenides provides the rapturous blurb on the cover of the beautiful jacket, because I couldn't help but think that this is the novel Eugenides was trying to write when he wrote The Marriage Plot. Replace his tedious musings on literary theory with musings on art and you're pretty much there. One of the characters even struggles with mental illness. The Interestings is a novel of astonishing intelligence and wit, and I do hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. I can't wait to explore Wolitzer's work further.Grade: A

Well done, old-fashioned novel about privileged, boomer New Yorkers By moose_of_many_waters Probably more than any book I've read in the past couple of years, The Interestings made me think about what I like in a novel. There is, in terms of mechanics, a lot to admire here. The sentences flow well, the writer has a command of the subject matter, and has sympathy for the most of the main characters she creates. Meg Wolitzer is a pro at what she does. But then there are the subjects being addressed, the characters, and the tone. Personally, I can't connect to the people described here. I'm not an East Coaster. I'm not super-liberal. I'm not plugged into popular culture, even the stuff that is regarded as high-brow television. If you're a boomer who loves things like The Daily Show, reads the Style section of the NY Times, and reads profiles in the New Yorker of movers and shakers in the business and art world, you'll probably find The Interestings appealing.Wolitzer has written a sprawling, decades-long tale of six East Coast kids who grew up in the 1970s. Five of the kids come from wealthy homes full of strivers. The sixth is the main character in this novel and is a scholarship kid enamored of the privilege of the others. In a lot of ways, The Interestings is a much better version of another novel I read recently, The Marriage Plot. They are both Jane Austen-like in their approach. Both have third person narrators who are not at all shy about telling exactly what is going on inside the heads of the principal characters. Mental illness plays a significant role in both stories. In The Interestings there is the welcome bonus of some quiet, droll humor. If you like traditional novels in a modern setting that are focused on relationships between friends, The Interestings will likely be a worthwhile read. If you have an aversion to East Coast culture and gravitate toward novels with big ideas, I'd stay away.

(Mama's Little Minions) Very good, useful, and practical information can be found within this book. The author writes well and is easy to understand. I think this book could benefit anyone from reading, and of any age. My 10 year old found it quite interesting as well. You can never have too much knowledge.

However, whenever the author wants to refer to "the bush" he calls it "the bushcraft". The bush is the bush, the "bushcraft" is the skill you need/have to make things/survive in the bush.

Solo circumnavigation of the globe. Fewer than 300 sailors in history have accomplished it, less than the number of people who have climbed Mt. Everest, or even those who have gone to space. In 1990, Istvan Kopar set out to earn his place among this elite fraternity—and to do so with only one stop. If he were successful, he would realize a lifelong dream, and bring pride to his home country of Hungary in the process. Yet the risk of failure carried with it the possibility of dying alone in the middle of the vast sea. Over twenty years ago, Kopar first published the inspiring chronicle of his journey in his native Hungarian. All of his hopes, dreams, and fears coalesced into one word: “Kihivas”—The Challenge. Now, Kihivas: Alone at the Ends of the Earth brings this thrilling story to an English-speaking readership for the first time. Kopar recounts every element of his adventure, from custom building his own 31-foot yacht, Salammbo, to battling the legendary waves of the Roaring Forties. His narrative is interspersed with proud descriptions of Hungary’s impressive maritime heritage, even as a landlocked country, and heartfelt portrayals of the memories that kept him going as he faced thousands of miles of lonely ocean. Experience a glimpse into the struggles, thrills, and insights known only to those who dare to pursue the greatest of challenges—alone at the ends of the earth.

Kihivas: Alone at the Ends of the Earth (Nonfiction Sailing Adventure Memoir), by Istvan Kopar

Review "Istvan Kopar's story of his 1990 solo circumnavigation is a mesmerizing tale. The overall plot line may be similar to other sailing adventures, but what makes this a remarkable read is the voice. This Hungarian-born sailor has a fresh perspective which results in fascinating, tangible details coming across the page. Part ship's log, part personal reflection and part adventure story, Kihivas keeps readers' interest. It should resonate with any sailor, and prove to be a page-turner for most literary types... Re-reading passages for the sheer beauty of the words and the momentary transport to the deck of Salammbo should be expected." -Sailing Magazine

About the Author Istvan Kopar was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1953. Despite growing up in a landlocked country behind the Iron Curtain, Kopar was determined to be a sailor and a circumnavigator. At age 17, he joined the merchant marine, working for MAHART (Hungarian Shipping Company), 1971-1984. Kopar traveled the world over the course of his career, and has stated that he "lost count after visiting over 100 different countries."Kopar started his own marina/charter operation and sailing school in Europe in the 1980s. He was an operational manager of the biggest vessel recovery company in the U.S. from 2000 to 2010. He has taught at Sea School, Fort Lauderdale, and is an instructor trainer for U.S. Sailing. He is also a USCG-licensed commercial captain.Kopar's proudest accomplishment to date was his solo one-stop circumnavigation of the globe, 1990-1991. He built his own boat for the voyage, Salammbo. Due to his shoestring budget, Kopar sailed without GPS, autopilot, radar, a water-maker, or any heating device. He was forced to rely on the use of a sextant and manual plotting for determining his course, and upon Morse code for weather forecasts. His first book details his adventures on this voyage. After Kopar returned safely home, Salammbo was exhibited at the 1992 World Expo in Seville, Spain, alongside a replica of the Santa Maria, and the U.S. Space Shuttle Discovery.Kopar holds a B.S. in Maritime Studies from the Technical University of Budapest, as well as a B.S. in Economics/Foreign Trade from the College for Foreign Trade at Budapest. He is fluent both in English and his native Hungarian. Kopar moved to the United States in 1994, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000. He has two adult children, and currently lives with his wife in Boca Raton, Florida. He works as the Sailing Master at Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club (NY) during the sailing season. Kopar was recently accepted as an entrant in the Golden Globe Race 2018, a nonstop solo race around the world.

Although I'm no expert on sailing, I enjoyed the book. I wanted to keep reading it and I finished it very quickly. The authors do a great job of giving me a sense of what it was like even though I have no experience that's anything close to what Istvan Kopar did. If you are an experienced sailor, you'll probably enjoy the book even more than I did.

By Albrecht Seer The adventure of a lifetime - a solo circumnavigation - that consequently changed a man's life but not his dreams of sailing the seven oceans alone! Coming from landlocked Hungary when it still was a Communist country behind the infamous Iron Curtain Istavan Kopar found his own course to the ultimate freedom by sailing around the world singlehanded following the most challenging route through the Roaring Forties and Screaming Fifties of the Southern Oceans. His account of the epic voyage is a thrilling document which gives the reader a chance to really comprehend and appreciate the enormous achievement of successfully finishing a seemingly impossible project that required an incredible amount of physical and mental strenght to overcome all the difficulties and obstacles - from the very first beginning when the 31 ft sailboat had to be transported from Hungary to the starting point at Pula in what is now Croatia, then still Yugoslavia. The log book entries along with the narrative passages of the book picture vividly the various highs and lows, storms and a knockdown not only weatherwise but also in terms of the psychological and physical status of the lone sailor as he is battling the unforgiving forces of the Southern Ocean. The interested reader finds a load of valuable information on sailing details as well as on the boat's equipment and provisions for such an adventure. With the general technical progress during the last 25 years in mind and also considering the limited resources which Istvan Kopar had to start out all by himself one cannot fail to admire the successfully finished circumnavigation. The author is planning to participate in a singlehanded race around the globe in 2018. Hopefully there will be another book coming after this circumnavigation - which should be the third one for Captain Kopar - once again!

Kopar not only constructed his own boat but kept it in constant repair. He has such great strength of character. Enjoyed his love of his family, his friends and his country; also his choice of books and music to feel him going. He was incredibly resourceful. It made me appreciate the explorers of old in a new way. Reading about his trip was exciting and suspenseful. It often reminded me of "The Perfect Storm" and the book about the rowing team at the 1936 Olympics. I love the beach but you get an entirely different perspective when you are offshore. The ocean is so vast and this book gives you such an appreciation for it. Kopar is incredibly brave and determined! The book was very well written and the pictures added to the enjoyment of the story.

It really brought to light the problems of domestic abuse, and how people react to it.It showed how hard it can be to get away, and why some people are afraid to help. The relationships in this book felt real. I would recommend it. I received this book free for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I thought this book was one of the best I have read this year By Trudy Mintun I received this book free of charge. I am giving my honest opinion of this book.I thought this book was one of the best I have read this year. It deals with a very serious subject...abuse. I have always wondered if there wasn't some sort of "underground" help for people in abusive situations. The book gives a look into what this kind of help might be. The women protrayed in the book are survivors. The book is filled with strong people. There is ranching, and horses. There are close relationships. However, there isn't any romance. And that is in part what made the book so good for me. There is a bit of mystery, and excitement. The characters in the book grew on me. I really hope there is another book coming up and that this becomes a series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sweet, sad and very addictive! By Sissy Vest I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. The book was a little bit hard to get into because for the first couple of chapters you were learning the characters and it kept jumping back and forth. Once you got into the story in was next to impossible to put down. It was sweet, sad and very addictive. Nikki just grabs your heart and won't let go.VERY good read, finished it in one setting. Can't wait to read more from her!

I don't think any of them were to excited at first but after everyone sat down and relaxed and started to look at them they were all smiling and really enjoyed them

A Wonderful Walk Down Denver Broncos Memory Lane By Tim Larison As a long time fan of the Denver Broncos I was excited to read Mike Klis' new book "Mile High Magic: The 25 Greatest Moments in Denver Broncos History". Klis' anthology of the team's history did not disappoint - it's the best book I've read on the Broncos to date.Klis has covered the Broncos as a reporter first for the Denver Post (2005-2014) and this year for Channel 9 television in Denver. I liked that Mile High Magic was more than a rehash of old newspaper stories - Klis interviewed many Bronco stars of the past to get their current take on memorable events in the team's history. "The Drive was kind of my coming out party," John Elway relates when thinking back to the #1 moment in the book - the 98 yard touchdown drive in the waning minutes of the 1987 AFC Championship game in Cleveland. "That legitimized me in big games." I enjoyed reliving the great moments of the Broncos past through the eyes of the players that made them happen. The book is beautifully illustrated, with classic color photos from past game action. This is your ultimate coffee table Broncos book. I would buy it just for the pictures alone. In addition Mile High Magic is packed with interesting little facts about the team that even the most ardent Bronco fans may not be aware of. Moment #18 is John Elway's 43 yard pass to a leaping Rod Smith in a September 1995 game to beat the Washington Redskins as time expired. "It was the only football game Elway had ever played in - high school, college, or pro - that he threw a touchdown pass on the final play to win the game," Klis writes. I did not know that!A minor beef I had with the book: Klis has too much Manning in the book, and too little "Little". Peyton Manning has five of the team's great moments, while Hall of Famer Floyd Little only has one. Some notable Floyd Little games that did not make the Klis top 25:1. The Broncos 21-19 victory over the defending Super Bowl Champion NY Jets in 1969. I talked to another long time fan recently and we rated this game, and last month's amazing victory over the undefeated New England Patriots, as the two best Bronco regular season home games ever.2. The Broncos 27-0 win over Art Modell's Cleveland Browns in 1971 after Modell had said during the NFL/AFL wars that the Denver Broncos would never play in his stadium Starting with this game the Broncos would be the Browns' nemesis for decades.3. The Broncos first Monday Night Football appearance ever - a 23-23 tie against the hated Raiders in 1973.While Floyd's Bronco teams were not nearly as successful on the field as Peyton's, these games from the late 60's and early 70's were important in establishing the Broncos' franchise identity on a national level. Why not condense the five Manning moments into two or three, and bump the number of Floyd Little moments in the list to match Peyton's? Manning, after all, is going into the Hall of Fame as an Indianapolis Colt, and not as a Denver Bronco. But every long time fan will no doubt have their own top 25 moments that won't necessarily match the author's choices. This does not detract from the book. Mile High Magic is a wonderful walk down Denver Broncos memory lane. A must read for fans who have lived through many of the team's great moments like I have.

In the previous books, Abe has been all business. We've seen very little of his private life, because he likes to keep it...well, private. He is someone I could definitely relate to.His love interest, Nikki, is a little crazy, but in the end she grew on me. I guess I can see why she did the things she did, given the circumstances. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and give it 4.5 stars! My favorite of the anthology!Dominic-------Dominic is a great love story, the story of Dominic and Laney. She grew up in a house filled with depression and still suffers from the emotional neglect. This story is passionate and oh so hot! I love that their tragic pasts brought them together and gave them a taste of true happiness at last. The only thing I struggled with in this story is how Dominic treats Laney at times. He adores her and for the most part treats her exceptionally well, however at times he came across as being very controlling. Dominic frequently will not let her finish her sentences and on several occasions he discounts what she wants and decides for them both, because he knows best.Eroe----Eroe is the back story of Sabato...where he came from, how his relationship with his father evolved, and how he became the man he is. This book is filled with passion and a longing for love. It will take you on a journey through the highs of happiness and the depths of despair. While I enjoyed this book, I didn't fully appreciate it until I read the next book, Sabato. I read it as a part of the Ties of Steel Anthology so I kind of had to read it before Sabato; if you read the books individually, I highly recommend reading Eroe before Sabato. It will give you a much better appreciation of his character.Sabato------The title of this book is fitting for many reasons; one being that the cross Sabato has to bear throughout his life is that those who he loves get hurt. I'll let you read the book to figure out the others on your own. This book is filled with passion, much like the prior books in the series, but different in its own way. While I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I could not quite get into it as much as I did the earlier Steel books.I did connect with the heroine, Mel, on a certain level though. She was a good girl, brought up right, but with deep seeded desires that she had yet to explore. She finds her perfect match in Sabato. He is willing AND able to help her explore her desires, even some she never knew existed.

Nikki doesn't know if she can handle everything that Abe wants to give her. As they battle all that life throws at them they must decide whether they can trust one another enough to lean on them or if they should just walk away. I loved this book from beginning to end. MJ Fields has done it again! I can't wait to see what she has in store for us in Dominic! A MUST READ!!!Dominic:Dominic is one HOT sexy Italian stallion .. who is not just good in bed but can be tender & sweet, but stubborn and domineering as well. Laney and Dom both have their share of trouble & heartaches .. together is can be a whole lot of hurt or a whole lot of healing .. which will they decide. When Dominic speaks Italian to Laney, it is definitely swoon worthy .. in fact I'd like to learn more of the language of love!MJ Fields writing style is like no other. Her ability to develop the characters in such a way that makes you,the reader, feel as though you are part of the story, keeps me craving more. I feel as though I'm vested in each of their outcomes! And oh can she write HOT DOMINATE ALPHA MALES that make your panties melt .. yes please I'll take more of that!Eroe:The depth of emotion that M.J. Fields is able to convey in her words is unbelievable. The hurt, anger, guilt & shame - not to mention the lust & love are so real you feel as though you're witnessing it first-hand. Sabato has won my heart through his pain and suffering & just wanting to be loved. M.J. Field set the ending up so perfectly that while you'd like to say you'd didn't see that coming; hindsight being 20/20, you kind of did, but you're so distracted by the confessions of the heart that you're blinded to the reality of life.Sabato:Sabato will keep you tied up in knots - and you will love it!

Ties That Bind, by Debbie White

Review "Pat is a wonderfully engaging and comforting presence in the book. Even when White is describing her hardships, Pat has a sense of calm and strength that is reassuring. What binds the book together is White's empathy for her characters, and how Pat's story is so hopeful and optimistic.  In the end, Pat's story feels like a life fully lived and it's a gratifying and enjoyable read to experience it with her." Self-Publishing Review, 4 Stars "While the tone of this work is steeped in poignancy and regret for the all-too-rapid passing of time, there's so much to enjoy in TiesThat Bind, especially those early days in Patsy and Charles' life when their professional and personal lives meshed so perfectly together. Ties That Bind examines the dynamics of family and aging, and it does so via a moving and sincere narrative. It's highly recommended."Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite - 5 Stars

An intriguing and sweet story.By Dina S. on October 15, 2015Format: Kindle EditionThis is a heartfelt story of Pat wanting to find her birth parents. She and her husband are Private Investigators which helps them along the way to find to her original roots. What she finds leaves her with many emotions but the knowing that she was loved by many.Debbie White wrote with such passion that this story touched me in many ways. I was not adopted but never knew my father, so I understand the wanting to know. This is a tender and sweet story. I look forward to her other books. I did receive this copy in exchange for an honest review.

The journey she and her PI husband Charles, go to find answers kept me entertained throughout the book. I couldn't put it down and some parts were very emotional and had me in tears. Truly a lovely story.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Ties That Bind By Liz Ties That BindBy: Debbie WhiteTies That Bind is a very heartfelt story. Debbie White did an excellent job on the story and the characters. Pat and her husband , Charles , are private Investigators and are pretty good at their jobs. Pat has known that she was adopted when she was little. It bothers her that she does not know who her real parents are. She carries us on a journey where her and Charles go to see if they can find some answers about Pat’s real parents. I was not adopted , but the last really got to me because of my mom. I was trying to finished the story and did not want to put the book down till I reached the end, but the tears got to flowing really hard and I could not see to read, so I had to get the kleenex to wipe the tears away . I really enjoyed this story and the characters. Debbie White did an excellent job of Pat and her wanting to find out who her parents were. If you did not know , would you want to know who your real parents were? Would it bother you not knowing who your family was?I was given a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review, which I have given.
