Janice Galloway's inventive first novel is about the breakdown of a 27-year-old drama teacher named Joy Stone.

The problems of everyday living accumulate and begin to torture Joy, who blames her problems not on her work or on the accidental drowning of her illicit lover but on herself.

While painful and deeply serious, this audiobook holds great warmth and energy: it's the wit and irony found in moments of despair that prove to be Joy's salvation.

Haunting By Matthew Hovious My interest in the band "Garbage" led me to this book - its title was used by them to create a chillingly magnificent song on their second CD. I found the book itself to be one of the most creative and compelling works I read this year. The story it tells gets under your skin to such a point that I don't recommend it for those already depressed. For the rest of us, it is a chilling look inside a sympathetic character, a young woman dancing around the border between sanity and madness. She knows she is on the verge of losing it all, and knows she is not getting the kind of help she needs from anyone - least of all the mediocre medical personnel who see her as just one more casefile. Yet she's unable to shake the helplessness and displays the lack of will to take control of her own life which is so often found in the insane and/or suicidal. Galloway makes extremely skilled use of innovative page layouts and even unexpected graphics to really show us her character's imbalanced view of the world. We see through her eyes.

Painful, but So Beautiful By Lauryn Angel This novel is painful to read because Janice Galloway's descriptions of Joy Stone's feelings and experiences are so accurate. We've all felt the way Joy feels at some time or another. The accuracy is so startling that at times it's tempting to forget that this is fiction, and not a non-fiction depression narrative, like "The Beast" or "Girl, Interrupted." Perhaps this is why Galloway added the subtitle, "A Novel." This novel is truly inspiring; it's refreshing to read a novel about depression which maintains a sense of humor. Galloway uses a number of unusual narrative techniques, including spontaneously breaking into dialogues when she's on the phone or talking to doctors, and putting comments in the margins to represent the thoughts that we all have, but don't always acknowledge, even to ourselves. This is a novel I'm sure I'll go back to again and again, because even though the subject matter is depressing and painful, this novel is so beautifully written and the ending is uplifting. This novel will be with me for quite some time.

New York Times book review said it best By Lady Fancifull The front of my paperback edition carries the following strapline from a NYT book review :'Resembles Tristram Shandy as rewritten by Sylvia Plath'That is it, in a nutshell. Both TS and Plath's The Bell Jar (50th Anniversary Edition) are, above all, wonderful and creative pieces of writerly craft. As is this. Janice Galloway combines the plangent, melancholy, mordantly funny, sharp-eyed anarchic WEIRDNESS of Tristram Shandy with the excruciatingly painful, honest, revelatory expose of a mind (very like yours and mine) cracking and giving way under the pressures of holding it together in a world which seems set-up precisely to force shattering in the first place - like The Bell JarA beautifully constructed book, which like Tristram Shandy uses the visual aspect of what a printed book looks like to express something of what the book is about - without giving too much away here, as i don't want to spoil the reader in their surprised response. This book, in non-linear fashion is the story of one woman and how she holds (and does not hold) together. Galloway, as I realise from having previously read two volumes of her later published autobiography This is Not About Me and All Made Up, has distilled some of her own life into this imaginative fiction. The prizes and awards this first novel garnered are deserved and unsurprising. And, most searingly, the MIND/Allan Lane award. Aspects of mental health care are scorchingly shown.Be warned, this book will have you laughing at the black humour of our protagonist at the very moment that the fierceness of her pain feels like a knife in the gut

Read this in one sitting By read-along-with-sue I wasn't sure when first starting to read this book it would be a bit like 'holiday wives' all sort of LA Hollywood style.I couldn't have been more wrong!Jodi Ludlum is a well known actress married to a well known actor, and together they have a son named Saul.Jodi, as a Mom wants to get Saul away from the limelight, all the lights, attraction and stage talk and let him lead a near to 'normal' life as possible so she decided to go back to Dublin where she grew up.Now picture a beautiful cottage, country village surroundings. Beautiful, but she cannot escape her popularity and is recognised by many of the Mom's in the school playground when she enrolls her son at the school. Of course, typical to human nature most of the Moms are gasping for breathe and wanting to make a friend of her.I won't tell you much more about the story as I want you to read it. Its a lovely story of how friendship grew between two Mom's, its also got a shocker at the end of the story.I had a question mark all along in my head about her husband, well, when you read it, you will find out.Its not a straight forward story at all, I think Emma Hannigan has weaved a brilliant piece of artwork there and keeps your slowly trailing along a path where clues are, but you just don't pick them up.A valuable lesson in life is there also, I'll leave it to YOU the reader to find that out!Thank you to Headline publishers via Net Galley for allowing me to read and review this lovely book. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a gorgeously homely book By BestChickLit.com This is a really sweet, heart-warming story about the lengths women will go to just to appear perfect in public – and finding out whether it’s worth it.The peace of a small Irish village is rocked when gorgeous A-list movie star Jodi Ludlum moves into a cottage with her young son, while her devoted husband stays on set.Francine prides herself on being the envy of all other women in the village – the perfect mother, wife, career woman and master baker. But for both women not all is as it seems; the cracks are starting to show and surely it’s only a matter of time before their carefully hidden secrets come tumbling out of the closet. Turning to one another for help they learn the importance of true friendship and not caring what others think. This is a gorgeously homely book. It looks honestly at motherhood and what an unrewarding struggle it can be at times but also at the all beautiful and encompassing love a mum can have for her kids. Women who judge one another without compassion learn the lesson of what being a real friend is all about and those afraid of facing their demons will find the support to do just that. Hannigan perfectly depicts rural life in a way which is both horrendously back-stabbing and perfectly idyllic.Review by Nikki Mason on behalf of BestChickLit.com

While the two stories were okay, I think the book would have benefitted from adding at least one and ideally two more characters to round it out. I personally felt that there was far too much repetition on the one storyline - really did not need any more examples of bad behaviour on the part of the child - and far too unlikely a storyline for the celebrity character. I did enjoy the narration and the happy ending, but all in all this book was ho hum.

The 2nd left me with my mouth hanging open, disbelieving it ended the way it did. Waited anxiously for this one, to be sure. Phew! This is a fun series. I learned a lot about the world of dirt-bike racing. Pretty cool and makes me want to go and watch a few events--something I've never done. Watching these kids grow up, they really needed to grow up, and while it was frustrating at times to watch them make such stupid mistakes, I was compelled to keep watching it all happen. I recommend this series.
