Like baseball itself, Dreaming .400 exists outside of time; past, present, and future merge. Its 11 short stories are a rally cheer for the magic of the game—in the seductive swing of a girl who turns tinsel into gold; in the passion of an orphan on a quest to reach the Astrodome; in a vision of the future in which players are made, not born. Dreaming .400 spawns pen pal love between friends that grows into poetry; it shrinks the gap between the head and heart of a Brewers’ fan; provides an identity for a young man stuck in the shadows; inspires a vagabond’s impossible dream of fulfillment between the white lines. Steve Myers is part baseball nut, part poet. His extraordinary collection of stories announces a unique new voice into the literary baseball scene. Open the pack and smell the bubble gum and grass, see the beauty of a 6-4-3, remember that warm summer evening shagging flies. Dear baseball, have I told you lately how much I love you?

Dreaming .400, The Perfect Baseball Read For The Long Winter Ahead By Bridgeport Bill One of the most enjoyable baseball books I've read in a long time, though to call it merely a "baseball" book does it a disservice. The author, Steve Myers, taps into a kind of Jungian shared subconscious, and lays it bare before our eyes. We can only sit in wonder and amazement at the results. There are people who want very much to be writers. Then there are naturals like Mr. Myers who demonstrate that on some level, the stories are already there, ready to tell themselves, if only a person of sound heart and clear conscious is available to transfer them from some distant dimension into our own. From a baseball standpoint, if you remember Sixto Lezcano, Rob Deer, Mike Scott or Gary Matthews (to name a few), or if you have ever pored over an edition of the Baseball Encyclopedia for hours on end, fascinated by the endless details of the 1904 season, or the 1986 N.L. playoffs, this book might be for you. If you've ever day-dreamed away an afternoon, and those dreams somehow seemed more life-like than the world around you, this book is definitely for you.My favorite stories in this collection are "To Be Frank," (one of the best stories about friendship I've ever read), "Expos Next Generation," and "Thunderheart and the New Addictions," but there isn't a bad story in the lot.I highly recommend that you make this book part of your permanent baseball reading collection, to be rediscovered again and again during the cold, desolate off-season as well as for those long, languid summer afternoons, an hour or so before first pitch, when the twilight magic is strongest.

By entertheregistrar If you visit your local historical society, take a look at a newspaper from early October of 1910 or so. What you'll see on the front page, even if you live hundreds of miles from a major league stadium, is the recap of a World Series game. Once upon that time, the game was interwoven in the very fabric of our being. In one sense, Steve Myers takes us back to that time; it's worth noting how very little blow-by-blow, play-by-play baseball there is in the book. There are the mentions of Ruth and Cobb, of Warren Cromartie and Termel Sledge, but there is much more of the baseball which dwells in our being in these stories. It's worth noting that there are few, if any, run-of-the-mill people in the book; Steve's characters live on the fringes of reality, and indeed slipping over into the surreal, like baseball fandom itself--but we can recognize the emotions, the hopes and dreams, of the folks on these pages. This is simply world-class storytelling, and it is essential stuff for anyone who loves baseball and fine writing.
