Great Conclusion To The Trilogy By Simone Having first met Isobel and her family in Distance and followed them through Further, it was lovely to round out the trilogy with Surfacing. There is a larger time gap between the second and third books, with Surfacing taking place several years after Further. With her kids out of school and off her hands this should be a great time in Isobel's life, but sadly life has conspired to make it very challenging. While she is doing her best to put on a brave face, Isobel is slowly crumbling under the weight of grief and emptiness and is even questioning if staying in Australia is the best thing for her.As with the other two books in the series Nene Davies takes the reader on quite a journey with well drawn characters and vivid descriptive prose that draws you right into the story. Many different themes are explored in a realistic way, in particular the important (and often ignored) issue of mental health as well as the difficulty of having a loved one serving in the armed forces. It has been great to see Nene's development as a writer over the span of the series and I do feel a bit sad that Surfacing is the last we will see of the Richardson family. If you have read the other two Distance series books, you have to finish with Surfacing. If you haven't yet embarked on the trilogy jump aboard and know you have three great books to look forward to.

By Carole 'Surfacing', the third and final book in Nene Davies’ Distance series, takes Isobel Richardson, a Welsh immigrant, along a pathway of sometimes shocking new challenges, soul-searching, and self-discovery. As ever, the author excels in nailing the fine details that make this story larger than life, as we feel with Isobel both the pain and the joy of events facing her, her family and her friends, in this Australian land that she had always wanted to come to. In other words- have your hanky ready. There is somewhat of a shift in the tone of this book- the children have matured and Issy herself seems to have sharpened her responses to people and situations, but Nene’s easy style and crisp humour makes this book hard to put down, in the race to find out how each of life’s twists and turns will be resolved for Isobel, or not. A most engaging read.

In Surfacing, her third novel of the Williams family who left Wales to settle in Australia, Davies’ protagonist, Isobel, is once again fraught with family challenges. Davies takes the reader though a rollercoaster of emotions as Isobel seeks to deal with the challenges she faces with her life and her children, while coping with her own grief. The reader empathises with Isobel as she struggles to come to terms with the barbs life has thrown at her and seeks to emerge with a positive vision for her future.

Laugh-aloud funny By HeyJudy I was reading FAST WOMEN at the beach--yes! it's a beach book--and I was laughing so hard that other women, total strangers, kept stopping by to see what I was reading with such enjoyment.I've read all of Crusie's novels. While all of them were good (obviously, or I wouldn't have bothered to keep buying them), FAST WOMEN is in a class by itself. Either Crusie has matured as an author, or her editors finally are allowing her to tell her tales as she sees fit.FAST WOMEN also could have been named SMART WOMEN. For a change, the heroine and her friends are middle-aged, and sort of battle-scarred by life--exactly as most real people are, too. This is a fast-moving story, with mystery...ex-husbands... retribution...true love...and great sex. The novel is compelling and all's well that ends well. In the process of getting to that end, yes, you'll have some good laughs.

By mirope Jennifer Crusie is one of those writers I buy the second she comes out with a new book, and this was no exception. I read it in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it. For Crusie fans, it's not as good as "Welcome to Temptation" (what could be?), but it's better than "Tell Me Lies." Crusie's trademark writing is as good as ever - hilarious dialouge, hot love scenes, well-drawn cast of leading and secondary characters, fast-paced plot. Nevertheless, this is something more than the usual contemporary romance. I thought that the mystery at the core of the plot was exceptionally good. They are usually so predictable in romance novels, but this one had some twists that kept me guessing. Second, this book is really a pretty good study of the emotional chaos created by infidelity and divorce. It takes a very honest look at the various stages women go through, including the immediate post-divorce insanity. While all of this makes for a well-rounded book, serious romance novel addicts will be disappointed that there isn't more focus on the relationship between the two lead characters.

Personally, I think that's a good thing. True....TEMPTATION is an excellent book. So is WOMEN. They're very dissimilar, thank heavens. Frankly, I get tired of the "cookie cutter" characters when an author finds a format that's selling and refuses to stray from it. Crusie gets edgy and isn't afraid to break away from the pack and FAST WOMEN reflects that break.Nell Dysart has been dumped by her husband of 22 years and with the help of her two sister-in-laws, is groping for a new life. Due to a few twist and laughable turns she finds herself working for a couple of detectives in their antiquated office that she immediately decides to update,(the office, not the detectives) but not before she has innocently managed to create even more damage. By the time she has made changes in the office she has also dug through the tough shield that the #1 detective, Gabe McKenna has shrouded himself in.Crusie developed a novel that is pure feel-good entertainment and serves up plenty of opportunities to laugh out loud. As an added bonus the reader gets to try and figure out the mystery that is brewing throughout the book. It's not heavy reading, but who wants that on lazy hot summer days? If I want to dig into WAR AND PEACE again, I'll save that for those long, dreary winter months. Until then, I'll grab every Crusie book as fast as she can turn them out.

Waterman is the first comprehensive biography of Duke Kahanamoku (1890–1968): swimmer, surfer, Olympic gold medalist, Hawaiian icon, waterman.

Long before Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz made their splashes in the pool, Kahanamoku emerged from the backwaters of Waikiki to become America’s first superstar Olympic swimmer. The original “human fish” set dozens of world records and topped the world rankings for more than a decade; his rivalry with Johnny Weissmuller transformed competitive swimming from an insignificant sideshow into a headliner event.

Kahanamoku used his Olympic renown to introduce the sport of “surf-riding,” an activity unknown beyond the Hawaiian Islands, to the world. Standing proudly on his traditional wooden longboard, he spread surfing from Australia to the Hollywood crowd in California to New Jersey. No American athlete has influenced two sports as profoundly as Kahanamoku did, and yet he remains an enigmatic and underappreciated figure: a dark-skinned Pacific Islander who encountered and overcame racism and ignorance long before the likes of Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, and Jackie Robinson.

Kahanamoku’s connection to his homeland was equally important. He was born when Hawaii was an independent kingdom; he served as the sheriff of Honolulu during Pearl Harbor and World War II and as a globetrotting “Ambassador of Aloha” afterward; he died not long after Hawaii attained statehood. As one sportswriter put it, Duke was “Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey combined down here.”

In Waterman, award-winning journalist David Davis examines the remarkable life of Duke Kahanamoku, in and out of the water.

By David I've always been aware of the legend and mythology of Duke, but in Waterman, Davis clearly defines the nuanced personality and character of one of surfings most iconic figures. It sheds light on the man himself, how Hawai'i shaped him, and how he shaped Hawai'i. Waterman is an asset and a must-read for anyone interested in surfing, Hawai'i, or simply American history. Much gratitude and thanks!

An enjoyable book By Sam Bloom David Davis's Waterman the life story of Duke Kahanamoku is a great read and well written story of the first real surfer as well as a history of early surfing. Besides the historical aspect of the story it is well researched and provides one with a pleasurable experience. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about real people.Sam Bloom
