6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Reviewed by Desere Steenberg, South Africa By Desere Steenberg A very long time ago I remember watching a series on television where one wedding led to another wedding and that led to yet another wedding, and I remember thinking I wish someone would incorporate the idea into a romance book, for reading is so much better than watching it play out on television!Author Kandy Shepherd has done it, and I could not have been more thrilled when I got this gem of a read in my very happy hands. The read tells of Kate Parker, she distracts herself from memories by keeping busy, so she organizes weddings for the happy couples of Dolphin Bay. But tall, dark and totally gorgeous tycoon Sam Lancaster 's arrival sends her into such a fit of flutter she forget's where she left the confetti, the man does more of a number on her senses than a knock over the head!Sam however is mysterious and this of course as all us woman know makes the man even more sexy than other's who are open about everything, so it just confuses Kate even more. Him sticking around a little longer than it will take to cut the cake just makes things even worse for poor Kate. The man makes her heart soar one minute and all she wants to do is fall into his arms and the next his overseeing her building project makes her blood boil, well just a little.Neither Kate nor Sam has the time or inclination for distractions, planning weddings is what Kate does best and being distracted will only cause trouble and as for Sam he needs to focus on getting the job done, and Kate and her sweet smile will certainly not help his case, he needs to get the job done and get going !I loved, loved LOVED this book from start to finish. It had so much wonderful emotion it sent my heart souring into the clouds and I did not want to come back down! I loved the feisty-ness of the heroine, trying to keep it together and refusing to let your life fall apart is never an easy task, yet this heroine made it look and sound easy but at the same time the author let the element of fear and doubt shimmer through to remind me that it is easy to put on a brave face but deep down you are falling to pieces. The character of Sam was so delicious the man made my toes curl , but one minute I wanted to hug him and the next I wanted to strangle him. This however just showed that it is pretty much the same for everyone every time we need to make big decisions. Our emotions are all over the place, we want to do the right thing and be seen as a kind person who everyone wants to hug and congratulate, but we also know that the other option is sometimes the best to do and no matter what we try it will result in someone wanting to strangle us.The read was filled with many wonderful moments of sweetness, the kind that makes you wish you could climb inside the book and stay there in order to live the lives of the characters. Passion, gentleness and understanding shone through in this read so beautifully it brought me to tears, excellent job Kandy!I am taking away a message of life has a way of bringing someone of a problem of some sort into our lives for a reason, you might be thinking " I don't need this now" and that's okay it's a natural reaction. But if the problem of person does not go away it 's a clear cut sign that life is trying to let you know this is something you need to act on. So don't hold back, take the step and try to see the light.I highly recommend this read for all fans of romance. It was sweet, kind, sensual and filled with a stunning set of characters in a beautifully crafted plot that will have you falling in love over and over again. This author has once again shown me that the brighter side of life can be found at the most unexpected of times.5/5 star review" Happiness comes riding into town, but will it stick around for the long run or head out faster then it arrived?"** Copy provided in exchange for a honest review

Whittaker - Page Flipperz Blog THE TYCOON AND THE WEDDING PLANNER is another heart-warming and sweet romance by author Kandy Shepherd. Kandy knows how to write swoon worthy stories, with depth and definition. Characters that you can relate to and stories that leave you starry eyed and sheepishly happy.I am a lover of a contemporary romance and Kandy is certainly a Harlequin Writer queen when it comes to these. I can always expect a love story that will leave me content but also heavy and light hearted throughout the read. The storyline was written at a wonderful pace, giving the reader depth into the story and the characters thoughts and feelings. The scenery is always well envisaged with gorgeous details – including Dolphin Bay a place I’d certainly love to find love in (sigh)As Always The romance is sensual and sweet, and Kandy gives the reader the HEA we eagerly await both for ourselves and the characters. Some may call it predictable but I call it fate ;)Sensual, satisfying, and with a tall dark and handsome spunk what more could any girl want?? ** drools *Kandy has created a story both intriguing and tantalizing. It’s funny, and quirky, romantic, passionate and filled with love, and certainly an adventure of the heart.Loved all the characters... Both Kate and Sam are wonderfully delivered giving the story LIFE AND LOVE AMOUNG THE PAGES.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A haunting love story as rare as a ghost orchid... By betty l. dravis I was always told that you can't judge a book by its cover, but with Ghost Orchid you can! The story inside is just as beautiful as the cover. Both are as rare as the ghost orchid on the cover. Author D.K. Christi has woven her knowledge of the Florida Everglades and nature into an exquisite, enchanting love story where a rare ghost orchid plays a magical, pivotal role for all the characters. The story opens with a lonely, middle-aged woman, Mel, taking her daily walk at the Audubon Society Sanctuary, reminiscing about her lost love and other secrets of her past. Although melancholy, she feels blessed to have experienced a "Great Love" in her life. She longs to see her estranged lover "just once more before she dies" and is happier among the sights and sounds of nature than anywhere else. She's a solitary figure at the sanctuary, but she's a "regular" and is known and well-liked by the staff. The story switches back and forth between Mel and Neev, a statuesque beauty who quit modeling to study philosophy at Oxford University. Neev loves photography, so eventually decides to pursue that career, a path that takes her to exotic locations around the world. She lands a plum assignment with a famous photographer, Roger Andrew, who is always seeking a rare "find" in nature. Roger is much older than Neev, but he becomes her mentor and best friend and they have a loving relationship.Although Roger and Neev share many things, she never confides to him about her family life or her reluctance to visit Florida. And Roger doesn't talk much of his ex-wife and son. Roger is passionate in his mission to uncover a "rare find," so when he learns that a ghost orchid is blooming at the Audubon Society Sanctuary, he convinces Neev to accompany him.For reasons I can't reveal without spoiling the plot, Neev is as passionate in her dislike of her mother as Roger is about his drive to find the elusive flower. Neev was raised by a devoted German couple and always wondered about her father. She longs to know more about him, but harbors little hope for a "love of her own."Something happens to Mel at the same time the rare orchid is spotted. That's a tragedy, but it creates the magic in this story, bringing the most unlikely people together in the most magical ways. What happens to Mel? Why has Neev chosen such a solitary, lonely life? What is so unique about this particular ghost orchid? Does it really have mystical powers? Who is the mysterious amateur photographer who becomes Roger's email friend? And how do Roger's Florida relatives fit into the picture?D.K. Christi answers all those questions in a masterful way, with near-perfect pacing, believable, likable characters--and a little help from a rare ghost orchid.I highly recommend this haunting, exquisite love story.ENDNOTE: There are some coincidences that could be considered as contrived by the author, but with a story this well-written and beautiful in its symmetry and uniqueness of plot, who would question that?Reviewed by Betty Dravis, July 22, 2010Author of "Dream Reachers" (with Chase Von) and other books

As I looked at the book cover, before I began reading, I couldn’t help but to feel excited. Just the background, the girl and the white most around the camera had my imagination getting ahead of me. Calming myself down I had to remember to read it first. When I finished reading I saw in awe. The book cover did not disappoint, because the story is as brilliantly beautifully as it is. A mystical romantic story of love, betrayal, heartache and forgiveness I was hooked from the beginning.D.K. Christi is a talented author who has her own style of writing that amazes me. The Everglades plays as a setting in the story, at what points I won’t say because I don’t want to give spoilers, and the author described the setting with more than on point knowledge. Not only is the Everglades described on point, but they were beautifully and vividly described. I felt as though I could image every single detail down to the smallest thing. The story came alive as I read each word and I didn’t want it to ever end. The plot contained twists and turns that kept me from even thinking about putting the book down. Mysteries around the past come slowly undone as she tells her story. “Ghost Orchid” is a magical and yet romantic read that I’m adding to one of my favorite reads. I even felt as though I was following the characters Neev and Mel watching them from afar throughout their lives.D.K. Christi captivated me with this book and stunned me to the very end. It’s a very moving story one that deserves to be read by everyone. She is a brilliant author and I can’t wait to read her next book. I recommend me this book to everyone and guarantee that you will be stunned when your finished. I do caution readers who plan or will read this book by saying that it’s one you need to make sure you schedule is clear until your done since you won’t put it down until the end.I was provided a copy of this book by the author for my honest review.Reviewed By: Keishian @ After Dark Reading Nook

Ghost Orchid is gentler, but equally compelling. It is a story of love, heartache, betrayal and cynicism, of discovery and of yearning and reconciliation. It is as magical as the rare and mysterious Ghost Orchid of its title.A woman obsessed with love for a man who is unable to commit to her finds comfort in an Audubon Society sanctuary in the Everglades. She is estranged from her daughter Neev, who was raised in Germany, and resents her mother. Neev is a brilliant and beautiful woman who travels the world as a wildlife photographer, often in the company of a much older photographer who becomes her best friend and mentor. The characters are brought together by the discovery of a rare ghost orchid in the sanctuary. Author D.K. Christi created characters and setting so vivid that I felt I was in the Everglades. I experienced some initial confusion about who each person was, but by the end, I was as mesmerized as the visitors to the sanctuary. I didn't want the book to end.Ghost Orchid is not a "standard" romance, but it is romantic and mystical and haunting. Well worth reading and the kind of book that stays with you.

Smooth as Butter, Sweet as Chocolate By Peggy Kassees Smooth as whipped butter, sweet as melted chocolate, refreshing as ice mint tea, Rhett DeVane's book melts on the tongue and slides down with all the comfort of, well, mama's comfort food. With writing is as rich as Carol Burns's Mama's Secret Recipe Chocolate Chip Cookies (included), Rhett takes us to the thriving small town of Chattahoochee, Florida, home of one of Florida's Mental Health Hospitals for the Criminally Insane, and home to Karen Fletcher/Mary Elizabeth Kensington, who is undergoing a crisis of her own.Over twenty years ago Karen Fletcher turned her back on everything and moved to Atlanta. She changed her name, assumed a British accent, and became a celebrity on Georgia Public Television known as Mary Elizabeth Kensington. She has two cats and a fiancée in Atlanta, and yet she is alone preparing to face one of the most terrible of diseases: breast cancer.Unsure of her welcome, Karen/Mary arrives on her mother's doorstep. DeVane weaves a story of compassion, humor, and poignancy that resonates with anyone who has gone through the agonizing process of dealing with a serious illness.Karen Fletcher must not only come to grips with the disease, but with herself, too. It is time she decides who she really is. DeVane tells a rich tale filled with Karen's family and friends. We ride along with Karen's ups and downs, intermixed in the small town life that not only thrives in the south, but in every corner of the world; A place where people come together to support one of their own.DeVane skillfully weaves the tradition of food as mankind's basic comfort along with compassion and caring in this heart-warming book.As Margaret, says: "You see, its one thing to go around saying that you'll be healthy and live a long life. It's entirely another to really live each day as if it was the greatest gift in the universe. Love your family. Kiss babies. Play with abandon. Make chocolate cake and . . . sit and watch a sunset."Allow me add: Read Mama's Comfort FoodMama's Comfort Food

After a number of years living and working in Atlanta as Mary Elizabeth Kensington, a successful career woman in public broadcasting, Karen Fletcher returns home following a cancer diagnosis to find the woman she has always been. Her ability to tell a story of heartbreak and courage with such realistic emotion and compassion is without measure. I love the way "Karen's" family found ways to use their love and humor to help her through such a horrific experience; and how forgiveness for her 20-year slight was never questioned. As a close neighbor to Chattahoochee (Tallahassee, FL) I can truthfully say that the personalities involved in DeVane's books are so believeable. I bought this book for my seven sisters and two best friends and without one exception they all rate it tops. Thanks for another heartfelt, wonderful story about how friends and family cope with a real-life experience.

He saved Peyton Lockhart’s life when they were kids―but now she’s all grown up and he’s a seasoned FBI agent who comes to her rescue again in this contemporary romance from #1 New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood.

Peyton and her sisters have inherited Bishop’s Cove, a small, luxurious oceanfront resort, but it comes with conditions: The girls must run the resort for one year and show a profit―only then will they own it.

A graduate of a prestigious French culinary school, Peyton has just lost her job as a food critic after rightfully accusing her boss of sexual harassment. Out of work and in a bad place personally, to Peyton a year doing something completely different sounds wonderful.

Peyton dives into learning the resort business but is quickly derailed by an escalating chain of events that puts her life in danger. She refuses to be intimidated―until she’s nearly killed. Then she calls on her childhood friend and protector, Finn MacBain, now with the FBI, and asks for his help. Finn is more than happy to do a favor for Peyton, but he doesn’t plan on dealing with the beautiful, passionate woman she has become.

There are countless challenges and too many people who want to stop Peyton and her sisters from succeeding. Among them are their contentious cousins and a powerful group of land developers who have been eyeing the coveted beachfront property. And it also becomes apparent that her old boss holds a serious grudge and believes in payback.

While the attraction between Peyton and Finn flames bright enough to distract them both from their dangerous situation, a happily ever after ending seems all but impossible. But the well-trained lawman never loses focus: he saved her life once; now he must do it again.

The sun was shining, and it was at least seventy degrees, he guessed, maybe seventy-five. He and Ronan had spent a week working in Chicago where it had been around ten degrees every single day with crazy below-zero wind chills. The heat felt good on his face. He liked being outside, cold or hot, and he liked being home, too. It had been such a long time. His cell phone rang, reminding him that he needed to turn it off before the ceremony. He saw who was calling and felt a wave of exhaustion. On-again off-again Danielle was trying to reconnect with him. He wasn’t about to get into that drama. He’d had enough, and he simply didn’t have the stamina for any more of her games. He declined the call and turned off the phone. He should go in, he decided, and was about to do just that when he saw her. The vision in blue. He watched her cross the parking lot and start up the walkway, her high heels clicking against the brick. He noticed her body first, of course. It was damn near perfect. The short, fitted dress showed off her curves and her long, gorgeous legs. Her stride was every bit as sexy as her body. The way she moved was sensual and seductive. She was absolutely beautiful. Her long dark hair, the color of midnight, fell in soft curls just below her slender shoulders. She must have felt him watching her, for she suddenly turned and looked up the hill. When she saw him, she stepped off the path and started walking toward him. He wanted to swallow, but he couldn’t seem to remember how. He had never reacted to any woman this fiercely, this quickly. What had happened to his self-control? He excused his bizarre behavior by reasoning that she was no ordinary woman. He didn’t want to stare, but the closer she came, the better she looked. Beneath her thick dark eyelashes were the most beautiful, crystalline blue eyes he had ever seen, and her rosy lips were full and inviting. She stepped directly in front of him and gave him a heart-stopping smile. The dimple in her cheek was sexy as hell. So was her scent, which was light and feminine. Her eyes sparkled with laughter when she stretched up, kissed him on his cheek, and said, “Hello, Hotshot.”He was speechless. Peyton Lockhart? He couldn’t believe it. She was all grown-up. She had gone from a skinny little girl to this beautiful woman with a devastating smile. When did this happen? The transformation seemed to have taken place overnight, but then Finn realized he hadn’t been around while she was growing up. He’d gone to California to do his undergraduate work at Stanford and had stayed there for law school. During that time his parents had downsized to a smaller, more energy-efficient home about a mile from their old house in Brentwood. Whenever Finn was home on break, he never had enough time to go back to the old neighborhood.Finn overcame his surprise enough to speak. “Don’t call me Hotshot.”“You didn’t know who I was, did you, Finn?” she asked, saying his name to placate him.“I didn’t have a clue,” he admitted. He was still trying to get past his initial reaction and stop acting as though he had never seen a beautiful woman before. This was Peyton, the little girl who would sit on the front steps and wait for him to come home from high school so she could tell him about her day. She was a nuisance back then, and now a temptress.“Are your sisters here? I won’t recognize them, either, will I?”“Yes, they’re here already. I’m running late.”Beck whistled from the doorway to get Finn’s attention.“Aren’t you in the wedding?” she asked. He nodded. “Yeah, I should go in. It’s good to see you again.”Peyton didn’t want to miss the bride walking down the aisle. “It’s good to see you, too.”It had suddenly become awkward, and she didn’t understand why. He wasn’t leaving. Beck whistled again, but Finn didn’t move.“Are you going to the reception?” he asked.“No, I’m afraid I can’t.”“Maybe I’ll see you after the wedding, then.”Peyton continued on, but when she glanced back, she thought it strange that Finn was still standing in the same spot.Finn had walked down to the parking lot to get away from the noise. He was listening to phone messages and turned just as Peyton was approaching. He offered to walk her to her car.“How come you aren’t coming to the reception?” he asked.“I have to work,” she answered. She dug the keys out of her little clutch and hit the unlock button. Standing beside her car, she said, “It really was good to see you.”“I’m sorry we didn’t get to—” He stopped. “When did you get this car?” he asked, staring past her and frowning.“About a year ago. Why?”Finn moved closer and squatted down behind the rear bumper. “These are bullet holes.”“Yes, they are,” she agreed. She didn’t seem the least fazed. “I’ve got to get going or I’ll be late for work.”He wasn’t about to let her leave. “They haven’t been here long.”“The bullet holes?”“Yes, the bullet holes,” he said.He was asking questions so rapidly he wasn’t giving her time to answer.“Yes, I was in the car. I was on the highway when it happened. He wanted me to stop. I didn’t know he shot at me until I was back in Texas. The holes are so low, I didn’t see them until a few days later. In fact, you’re the only other person who’s noticed them.”“You couldn’t hear gunshots?” His voice was brisk, no nonsense. He was all FBI now.Her hand went to her hip. “I was in the middle of a blizzard at the time. All I could hear was the howling wind.”“Where exactly were you?”“Northwest of Minneapolis. Finn, I’ve got to leave.”She wasn’t going anywhere until she gave him a few more details.“Who did you report it to?”Peyton knew he wasn’t going to like her answer. “I didn’t report it.”“Because you didn’t realize he was shooting at you.”“Exactly.”“But when you did see the bullet holes—”She cut him off. “I didn’t report it.”“Why the hell not?” Frustration made his voice sharp. “He could be out there now trolling for his next victim, and maybe this time he’ll hit the gas tank or, worse, the driver.”She shook her head. “No, he won’t.”“Did you get the make or model?”“I have to leave.”“No, you have to answer me.”“You know what, Finn. You’re just as bossy and stubborn as you were when I was a little girl.”“And you’re just as aggravating. Now answer me.”She gave in. “It was a big white truck, and I know for a fact that he isn’t out on the highway looking for other victims.” Unless someone gets on Drew Albertson’s bad side, she silently added. She took a step closer. “And I’m not a victim. I took control of the situation and forced him to stop chasing me.”“How?” he asked, trying to concentrate on what she was saying and not how sexy she was or how good she smelled.“I sent him into a field. Actually, I sent him through a fence into a field.”“How did you do that?”“Some...intricate driving moves.” Slamming on the brakes and going into a spin that she was helpless to control could be considered an intricate move, couldn’t it?“Intricate driving moves, huh?” he repeated, smiling.“Yes,” she said. “He didn’t get hurt,” she hastened to add. “His car sank into the snow, and he was stuck. I pulled over to make sure he didn’t need an ambulance. I watched him get out and start pounding his fists on the truck.”“You saw the shooter?”Uh-oh. Too late, she realized she shouldn’t have mentioned that fact because now he was going to ask her another hundred questions. She decided to stop him before he got started.“I didn’t get a close look at him, but I’ve got a good idea who he is.”He seemed to take the news in stride. “Okay. Who is he?”“His name is Rick Parsons, and he works for the company that hired me.”He nodded calmly, but she noticed his jaw was clenched. “Since you never reported the incident to the police, he wasn’t arrested.”“That’s right.”“Why was he chasing you?”“Because I left,” she said, evading the details. “They really hate it when you leave the company”—she shrugged—“so they shoot at you.”Peyton thought he would think her answer funny, but apparently he wasn’t amused. She was sure he would have kept her there with his questions for the rest of the evening, or until he had the entire story, if a groomsman hadn’t appeared and told him he had to return to the church for photos.Finn answered that he would be right there, then opened the car door for Peyton. Before he started back up the hill toward the church, he turned to Peyton and said, “We aren’t finished with this.”

Her novels are always tightly written with snappy dialogue and are carefully plotted. This novel had none of those elements. I really wanted to like this novel because I am a fan of Julie's work. But, I'm just shaking my head and wondering whether she had a ghostwriter for this novel, she got a new editor or if she's just having an off year. Having read everything she's written- this just didn't "feel" like a Julie Garwood novel. It had none of the complexity she usually crafts into her characters or settings, and at times seemed even a little ham-handed and rushed with the descriptions (which is so not her style). Since when is a Julie Garwood heroine this silly or her hero this over-the-top brooding? Since NEVER. It had an overall "cluttered" feeling and there were also some pretty big plot holes. I kept thinking all the way through that I just didn't hear her signature writing style in the novel at all. While it wasn't a bad story by regular romance novel standards...it wasn't a Julie Garwood romantic suspense. I'm still going to buy her novels the first day they come out, as she has mighty laurels to rest on prior to this clunker, but I was really disappointed by this one.

This one is not. It is very contrived (the bad people are ridiculously bad, there are always more than one person committing the same type of crime that could be "the bad guy" - just unlikely, unbelievable plot lines. That takes the enjoyment out of it because you spend time being disappointed at the silliness instead of enjoying the story. While I expect fiction to be fiction, I don't enjoy stories where the author hasn't put any effort into making it somewhat believable. It had potential but doesn't meet it.

She's one of my all time favorites. However, this book is a mess. It is so disjointed, it reads like her editor was on vacation. I honestly had to force myself to finish it. Definitely not a keeper. My advice--check it out of the library if you want to read it. Julie Garwood is still at the top of my list; even the best writers are entitled to a clunker now and then.

It's a delightful tale about man against nature, the hunter and the hunted, and the secrets of the hunt. Two characters, Otter, the angler, and Jim, the mentor, meet by the river. Otter wants to venture into the depths of the treacherous Rock Pool, but he doesn't know how to conquer it. Jim, the mentor observes the will and the skills of his pupil. Once Otter's candidacy is established, Jim guides him through his knowledge, and shows him his methods and the equipment he needs for his ambition. Is Jim a ghost or is he real? No spoilers here, you must read the story and decide for yourselves, but there's also Brody, his dog who never leaves his side.At the end of the hunt, there's a bittersweet victory and philosophy that concerns mankind and the human condition. Wonderful descriptions, natural dialogue, true to life characters, and a great twist at the end, all through skilful story-telling that shines with insight.Thoroughly recommended.
