Dick Newick was possibly the 20th century's most influential multihull designer. Now aficionados of multihulls - including trimarans, catamarans and proas - can now enjoy reading his official biography. This book takes readers through his early years, including kayak building and sailing, and then traveling throughout Europe in the years following WW II. Then we get to follow Dick's move to the Caribbean to operate a successful charter business. It was here he began building and sailing multihulls for his own use ... and then clients who desired what were possibly, in their time, some of the most cutting-edge multi-hulled boats seen anywhere in the world. In these pages, Dick Newick provides a glimpse into his family life, shares many personal stories, and talks extensively about his own boat design philosophy and achievements in the world of multihulls.

IT'S A NEWICK - Legendary Designer Brought Grace and Beauty to Multihulls, by Dick Newick, Alison Cotter

From the Author The original intent of this project was to feature the drawings and photos of Dick's many designs, which he was in the process of gathering when I was brought on board in 2008 to assist with writing his life story. My role was to record a series of interviews with Dick about his formative years and stitch those together as a cohesive narrative. A first draft was provided to Dick for review in 2009, but there was still much to do. Dick took on the task of fine-tuning the narrative, gathering images, and possibly adding an appendix of technical information with design notes and drawings--a tall order for a gentleman well into his 80s. From there, it went through several hands, with Dick incorporating his changes and others working to complete it after he passed. I am forever grateful to his widow Pat for graciously including my name on the cover, through she and the publisher deserve all the credit. It was an honor and a privilege to record his stories and to help preserve them for future generations.

By tres rios This lovingly crafted book details the life, dreams and accomplishments of master multihull designer and builder Dick Newick, from childhood through his years of family, travel and accomplishments to the end of his days. Accompanied by photographs and drawings, this story illuminates, for novice or pro sailor, a life in the creation and development of these boats as we know them today. Designing for cruising, racing or cargo, Newick melds the beauty of form, speed and light weight to produce boats that excel and delight. It is impossible to look at a modern multihull today and not see the touch of his brush and so he remains one of the cornerstones of the evolution of these magnificent vessels.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Quite Light By P W Dunlop I wanted this to be more substantive than it actually is. As biographies go, it's a fairly light account, the book's primary source being a series of interviews that had been conducted with Richard Newick, which were recorded and then transcribed. The book reads little more than as an expansion of that, and a first draft at that. The book would have welcomed the attention of an editor and a proof reader. Misspellings, formatting and factual errors abound. Although Newick's story is told in a chronological order, it never-the-less jumps about, with people and boats being mentioned in passing in the text, before they are actually introduced a few pages later on. The few photos and lines drawings are poorly reproduced. There are several references to Richard Newick's ability to design craft that embody any two of the following qualities: economy, performance, accommodation, though at the expense of the third. Beyond that, the book offers precious little technical detail about his designs, and why it was that they succeeded. In this regard, the book would have benefited from commentary by a technically adept aficionado (Steve Callahan perhaps, as his article on Newick in "Professional Boatbuilder" magazine #122 was both well-informed and quite succinct).

Wish more people he worked with had contributed to the book. I stupidly missed my chance to meet him and sail with him, so this was a pleasant read.

The authors of Little Things Win Big Games were tutored by some of the best baseball minds in the country, and were taught from a very young age. They have played the sport (or a derivative--softball) for over 60 years, from early grade school to present day. That's over 120 years of combined experience. They were exposed to the "right way" to play the game and learned very well. Luckily, they are also proficient in sharing their knowledge of the game of baseball so splendidly in this book. Little Things Wins Big Games is copiously illustrated to demonstrate exactly what the narrative is explaining. A professional photographer took 2000+ pictures, of which the authors used only the very best. In addition, five other baseball experts (mostly coaches) reviewed a draft manuscript for content to spot any errors or omissions. The result is a volume that covers basic fundamentals of baseball, from hitting to defense, including physical and mental preparation. Every conceivable situation is covered comprehensively, including a position-by-position description for each player. You will know exactly what to do or to look for when there are runners on base, the score is close, whether you are at bat or playing defense. Advance readers of this book declare it, "an easy read that is simple to understand." Those comments came from folks who know little about baseball. Of the several coaches involved in the review process, one of these experts said, "This book should become the Holy Grail for teaching young men now to play the game of baseball the right way. I wish it had been available when I was growing up. I would have read it over and over, as I did the few books that I could find on baseball fundamentals." If you are looking to improve your game, or to teach the young boys the game of baseball the right way, or simply to enhance your knowledge of baseball to get more out of watching, then Little Things Win Big Games will be a big help. If you have children or grand children or neighbor kids who are playing baseball but aren't getting the type of coaching one might hope for, Little Things Win big Games will be the foundation that will set your youngsters apart from their peers. It will be readily apparent to baseball people that these youngsters are players with a good understanding of the game. Through Little Things Win Big Games the serious reader will be able to gain a competitive edge for himself and his team. In short, it captures the many little things that the authors have learned in over 60 years of playing the game, things that aren't being taught to kids today, even at higher levels of play. The authors wrote Little Things Win Big Games because they didn't want key fundamentals of baseball to fade away with passing generations. The teams that win are the teams that do the "little things" better then their competitors. That is true in baseball, basketball, or football and also in the game of life!

Little Things Win Big Games: Baseball Fundamentals and Fine Points, by Mr Larry Gabe

About the Author Larry Gabe (GAH-bee) was born and raised in rural Iowa in the small farming community of Powersville where he attended a one-room elementary school. He attended high school in nearby Greene, 225 students in four grades. He played baseball and fastpitch softball in the summers. As a yougster 10-12 years old, he frequently rode his bike nine miles on gravel roads to get to summer baseball practice. During his high school years he played football, lettered three years; basketball, lettered three years; and baseball, lettered four years. He also competed in track, lettering two years. As a senior he was named All Conference in three sports. During summers while in high school and college, Gabe played semi-pro baseball with the Allison Cats winning the 1963 Iowa State Championship. He attended Luther College for one year lettering in baseball and basketball, and was a starting outfielder on the baseball team. Gabe then transferred to State College of Iowa, (now the University of Northern Iowa, UNI) where he again played baseball, ending with a career batting average of .312 and was selected as an all North Central Conference first baseman his senior year. Following high school Gabe had tryouts with the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox. He had been followed in college by scouts for the Phillies and Baltimore Orioles. However, he made a decision to pursue a more certain career in the pharmaceutical industry. Gabe worked for a division of Johnson and Johnson, Fisher Stevens, IMS America, Dun and Bradstreet, and finally the Hay Group. During his spare time Gabe played on several world-class fastpitch softball teams, The Valpo Kings ( Valparaiso, Indiana), Cobra Industries (Mishawauka, Indiana), and Cataldi's (Hammond, Indiana). Over the course of six-seven years he played a average of 75-80 games per season against such teams as the World Champion Aurora Seal Masters, The King and His Court, and the Queen and Her Maids. Of the six contests with Eddie Feigner (The King), Gabe's teams won five. Along with the outfield Gabe played some third base but considers his strongest defensive position to be first base. Gabe learned the footwork and other nuances of playing first from a Phillies coach who in turn learned directly from Gil Hodges while playing with him on the Brooklyn Dodgers. Gabe and his wife Jane are retired and live in Salem, SC, near Clemson University, where they have become avid Tiger fans. They lead an active life at Keowee Key.

By Bill Donohue Larry Gabe’s Little Things Win Big Games is a bright, smart addition to every coaches library. It is far more than a beginner’s baseball instruction text. It’s a metaphor for all competitive forms, athletic , business and otherwise. Gabe begins and ends this well written, nicely visualized book with the admonition of preparation and anticipation. For a little league coach just getting started, a high school athlete wanting the next level, or a reminder for the seasoned practitioner of sport, baseball like most of life can be a game of seconds and inches, of practiced execution or foul balls. Being prepared to anticipate and execute may not win every contest in life, but it can sure prevent you from giving them away. A baseball fan like me will smile reading references to contemporary and historic players, tricks and techniques of the game, and fine tuned, detailed descriptions throughout the book for those needing a very close look at each position and its relation to the ball, the players, the coach and the game. Footwork to pop flies; knuckle balls to hook slides - it's all here. If you are just a fan, you may learn the rules and principles of sport and life from a fresh viewpoint. If you are more than a fan, you will be far the wiser when you next put on your cleats. I read it nearly cover to cover as the Royals and Mets did battle, learning as I went, imagining this book is a good gift, and an even greater reference.

By Bruce Hamilton Wow, what a super baseball-instructional book, for all fielding positions; for base running, stealing & sliding; as well as, for hitting. I just wish it would have been available, for me to use when my 2 baseball playing sons were growing up. Those 2 guys are, now, dads for 5 little guys (3 older ones--1 is 7, and 2 are 5) who have just started to show a real interest in the game. Needless to say, the 2 dads will be receiving a copy of this super book for Christmas, this year. I got myself one, for when the 5 guys visit there g'pa-----I will be able to work with them on their game, also. It is well written, with many definitive pics (how-to), included.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Here's what you need the next time practice gets rained out! By Amazon Customer I would have loved to have had this book when I was a young lad thinking that I could truly be a professional baseball player. Or during all those years I coached Little League. I was happy to proofread the manuscript for Larry, so in the interest of full disclosure I must admit this bias, but this manageable volume of the essentials for playing every position in the National Pastime is a pleasant addition to any baseball library. These lessons, in my experience, are just not being taught at any level these days. Kids are expected to accumulate the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed through playing endless games in school and summer leagues and travel teams, but often are not truly "coached." My high school coach would use our rainy days in a classroom with a blackboard diagramming defensive positioning; this book is what he was talking about. For a kid (or a coach) who is ready to excel, and to win, I would argue that a week devoted to understanding everything in this book is time well spent. I've watched a lot of games with Larry. We both seem to zero in on the mental errors and lack of knowledge/preparation which allow the extra run which makes the difference between winning and losing. In an age where talent is identified and harnessed into year-round play, it's amazing to see a college player who doesn't hit a cut-off man or gets thrown out by ten feet at third base with two outs. These things lose games. This is old school knowledge, presented in a way which is easy to reference. There is something here for players at any level.

By Chad Matthews What do you want from a book about professional wrestling?I’ll tell you what I want, from the perspective of a fellow pro wrestling enthusiast. I want a book that discusses the pertinent topics that we all love to analyze – the greatest wrestlers, the greatest matches, and the greatest moments – and gives a unique perspective on them; that challenges the way that I think about historical events or the context in which I’d previously viewed various performances. I want a book that readily engages my memory bank and brings to the forefront that which I hadn’t thought about in years. I want to book that reminds me why I spend so much time writing and conversing about pro wrestling.101 WWE Matches To See Before You Die might well then be the best book that I’ve ever read about pro wrestling…and I’ve pretty much read them all.

“Shows us, in tender detail, a life consumed by our unholy appetites.”―Steve Almond, New York Times Book Review

The tragic death of hockey star Derek Boogaard at twenty-eight was front-page news across the country in 2011 and helped shatter the silence about violence and concussions in professional sports. Now, in a gripping work of narrative nonfiction, acclaimed reporter John Branch tells the shocking story of Boogaard's life and heartbreaking death.

Boy on Ice is the richly told story of a mountain of a man who made it to the absolute pinnacle of his sport. Widely regarded as the toughest man in the NHL, Boogaard was a gentle man off the ice but a merciless fighter on it. With great narrative drive, Branch recounts Boogaard's unlikely journey from lumbering kid playing pond-hockey on the prairies of Saskatchewan, so big his skates would routinely break beneath his feet; to his teenaged junior hockey days, when one brutal outburst of violence brought Boogaard to the attention of professional scouts; to his days and nights as a star enforcer with the Minnesota Wild and the storied New York Rangers, capable of delivering career-ending punches and intimidating entire teams. But, as Branch reveals, behind the scenes Boogaard's injuries and concussions were mounting and his mental state was deteriorating, culminating in his early death from an overdose of alcohol and painkillers.

Based on months of investigation and hundreds of interviews with Boogaard's family, friends, teammates, and coaches, Boy on Ice is a brilliant work for fans of Michael Lewis's The Blind Side or Buzz Bissinger's Friday Night Lights. This is a book that raises deep and disturbing questions about the systemic brutality of contact sports―from peewees to professionals―and the damage that reaches far beyond the game.

Boy on Ice is transcendent and riveting and his best work yet.” (Al Michaels, Sportscaster)“Fascinating and chilling. In meticulous detail, John Branch creates a blood-drenched parable for the hidden human toll of sports violence staged for our entertainment. The rise and fall of Derek Boogaard―quintessential NHL goon―is unlike any sports biography you will ever read.” (Steve Fainaru, best-selling coauthor of League of Denial)“A beautifully written and haunting journey into the jagged psychology of the modern athlete. It compels fans to examine their own roles in the spectacle and reminds us in often brutal terms that for our sports heroes, the real struggles take place far beyond the ice or the field of play.” (Warren St. John, best-selling author of Outcasts United)“Best Book of the Year. Branch captures the sorrow and anguish of a young athlete’s career collapsing…and asks piercing questions about violence in sports.” (Publishers Weekly)

About the Author John Branch is a reporter for the New York Times. His 2012 piece “Snow Fall” won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. He lives near San Francisco.

If you love fighting in hockey, please read this book. This book truly is a book of contradictions. I can guarantee that you'll never look at pugilists dropping the gloves and putting on the foil the same way again.I feel the book does a very effective job illustrating the positives and negatives of life as an enforcer. In Derek's case, he dies at 28, but the years he lives involve him experiencing a life that he never would have experienced as someone who had limited academic attitude even before the repeated head trauma. (It's similar to a hypothetical question my friends and I have bantered about at the bar. Wikipedia has told us that two celebrities have come from the school our houses are districted to: Patrick Swayze and The Undertaker from WWE. Would you rather have the more years of the undertaker or the higher quality years of Swayze?)As far as the book itself, it starts with a great premise, but it's a difficult read for two reasons.1) The first is no fault of the author. The story that is being told is a real life Flowers for Algernon in that you become emotionally attached to the likeable character, and then watch the downward slide that you know won't be reversed. Each page comes with snowballing dread.2) the part that was under the author's control is that this book is an extension of an excellent series of articles, and it reads like it too. I think Branch realized he didn't have the content for a full-length book, so he threw in a bunch of filler, like I used to do to stretch the word count for high school essays. He feels the need to repeat himself several points throughout (he talks about Derek being a good guy off the ice so often it's like Rainman) and goes into unnecessary detail into the fights fought and pills taken (no exaggeration, play by play for most fights and a day by day account of what pills he was getting from each doctor. It reads like an academic journal)In the end, the format of being a full-length book might not have been ideal, and the content is at times hard to get through, but this is a book that has the potential to change sports. It poses the tough questions that can't be explored in a mere article, and helps personify the dangers of CTE and what the personality effects entail. If you're a fan of any sport with blunt head trauma, reading this book will give you an early insight into the future. It's coming...

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Branch brings depth to the interwoven examination of the toll the enforcer role takes on hockey players, physically and mentally. By Bookreporter No matter how you choose to look at it, BOY ON ICE is an extraordinarily sad book. Any time you have the accidental death of a 28-year-old man, you will have a tale of sorrow, but it is particularly more poignant given the struggles he had as a boy trying to make his way in the hockey world.Derek Boogaard's tale is not one of great skill and ready-made success. Instead, his is the story of the shy giant, the oversized boy who sought acceptance, who took on the role of enforcer because coaches liked his size. He was intimidating on the ice, but reserved and kind off it. Unlike most enforcers, he did not resort to showmanship or flash. He merely did his job and took his licks. That he made it to the NHL at all was a surprise to everyone, though he worked hard to make that dream a reality. The toll it took and the price it made him pay are far too tragic.John Branch tells the life of Derek Boogaard with smooth and factual precision, which you would expect from a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter. Where he really brings depth is in the interwoven examination of the toll the enforcer role takes on players --- physically and mentally --- and he does so without entering into a preachy realm that could become a turnoff to certain readers given the hot-button issue of fighting in hockey.Instead, Branch relies on analysis of Boogaard's own medical timeline: the constant injuries to the hands that are never allowed to heal, the shoulder and back pains, the repeated broken noses, the lost teeth, the headaches and concussions...and the medications prescribed in extraordinary volumes to keep the pain at bay. By no means was Boogaard an isolated case. All those who made their living with their fists seemed to share this same path, including teammate Todd Fedoruk and feared heavyweight Georges Laraque. And, in many ways, Branch shines a light on the failures of the team medical community, as well as the NHL substance abuse program: multiple doctors who did not share information and all prescribed high doses of medication simultaneously, feeding his addiction; doctors giving him some of the medication he was barred from using during his rehabilitation; and repeated drug test failures that resulted in no further action by the program or the teams. If I had one quibble with BOY ON ICE, it was in Branch using Boogaard's notes and memories and repeatedly pointing out his misspellings. After a time it felt more like cheap potshots being taken at the hulking boy who never finished high school rather than using those notes for what their purpose was: to give Boogaard the only direct involvement he could have in his own story. Branch easily could have cleaned up those passages and explained in an author's note that Boogaard’s spelling was suspect and was corrected for purposes of the textual presentation. The timeliness of the book is twofold. For one, the NHL season has just kicked off once again, and so hulking giants like Boogaard will take to the ice and seek each other out, continuing the tradition of toughness that he found himself following during his time in the league. And it comes a mere month after the arrest of two individuals connected with Boogaard's death through the supplying of the powerful drugs he so desperately needed. The abuse of prescription medications, some illegally obtained off the street, the failed rehab stints in California, the alcohol consumption, and the postmortem severe CTE diagnosis all bring a heartwarming against-the-odds success story to a crashing halt. It is the Icarus myth made real, and all the more sad when you consider that so many people saw Boogaard spiraling and changing. Tragically, none of their help or love was enough to save him from himself.Reviewed by Stephen Hubbard

Sad, sad story of a boy from Saskatchewan By Gene Killian This is a beautifully written book about Derek Boogaard, a hockey "enforcer" for the Minnesota Wild and, briefly, the New York Rangers. It's really about an innocent, immature and trusting big kid who fell apart, aided in his demise by irresponsible doctors. An excellent read about a painful story.

I ended up finishing it in two nights and stayed up way too late on both of them. Totally addicting! Lots of adventure and amusement, with well-developed characters (and good editing -- always something to note)But the best part of this book is definitely the choice of men: the Italian CEO playboy, or the college best friend? Not an easy decision it turns out, and I couldn't decide which guy I was rooting for (okay, so I might have a thing for the ridiculously hot CEO). So watching Lauren learn to take risks after a life of playing it safe (which was all too familiar -- talk about relatable characters), while navigating a complicated love triangle that was all wrapped up in her increasingly bizarre work life was fun.Overall, an enjoyable, page-turning, and sexy romantic comedy with lots of entertainment value. If you like rom-coms, I highly recommend it.

I'm sure glad I accepted By Hotcha I was given this book in return for a fair an honest review, and although I've never read this author before, I'm sure glad I accepted! Lauren Prescott had known she'd be a lawyer just like her dad and grandfather at an earlier age so it was no surprize that she achieved good grades and entered college. She was the only one without a lab partner and this gorgeous guy strutted into class very late like he owned the room and turned his killer smile om her. She had became friends with Krista, they became room mates and Joey, her ;ab partner, fell into place and they quickly became the three musketeers Lauren had no time for romance with working two jobs and a full load at college so was still a virgin at twenty-two. As years came and went the three friends became Lauren's extended family. Her uncle insisted on getting her an internship at a magazine company that his friend owned for the summer before she went to law school while Krista insisted that she should have some fun before she settled down as it was her last chance to go a little wild.....

I knew that the main character was probably going to get the boy, but during different parts of the book, I wasn't sure which one she would get! The story touched on topics such as how those who love us most can see us better than we actually see ourselves, getting out of our comfort zones, over-planning and how life is much more fun once we get out of own way. Highly recommend this page turner.

By Ginny Nic Compton is a very competent writer and adequate researcher although on one boat he misstated information about the birth of Princess Anne (and, being British, he should either know, or how to verify it). If such a basic fact about the royal family is inaccurate one wonders about other information. Boat books really benefit from even the most basic of lines drawings and accommodation plans as well as showing stuff such as the systems installations, galley or heads, in order to truly give the reader some sense of the boat. Ultimate classic yachts is such a declarative sentence that it automatically encourages the reader to think about all those other deserving classic which got omitted. I sense that this book contains a lot of boats and their details which may have appeared in a different format such as another book, magazine, or promotional material. Some great photos but not the ultimate -- an OK to good book strangled by its title.
