In soccer, perhaps more than any other sport, success hinges on team performance rather than individual play. As coaches are well aware, inspiring a group of players to perform as a finely tuned, coordinated unit is an on-going challenge. While several factors interfere with cohesion and flow of a soccer team, no published work has specifically addressed how to prevent and conquer such problems . . . until now.

In One Goal: The Mindset of Winning Soccer Teams, internationally renowned performance psychologist and author of the best-selling Focused for Soccer, Bill Beswick, delivers an unrivaled guide to developing a winning team mindset.

One Goal is arranged sequentially, providing invaluable insights on the various challenges facing coaches when pursuing a winning team mindset. You’ll find techniques, tools and suggestions to implement when addressing both common and unique challenges throughout the season. Specific contexts such as cup finals and tournaments are featured as well.

Recognizing team mindset as a factor distinguishing success from failure, One Goal features proven strategies from one of soccer’s top performance psychologists. It’s a soon-to-be classic that you will turn to again and again.

Great Book for any coach By Thomas This is a great book for any coach, but especially a Soccer (Football/Futbal) coach.Why1) It covers the pre-season items like meetings, initial team interactions, practices, and how to look at the entire season.2) Gives lots of practical examples. And why some my seem very U.K. focused, it hits on all ages and covers a lot of different levels of play.3) There are a lot of useful diagrams and charts - for example the positive and negative coach chart that you can use as a reference for your meetings and sessions.4) Lots of worksheets and exercises to help you practically apply the principles.5) This is coming from a true subject matter expert, as Bill's background and expertise in the area are extensive. This was my best Human Kenetics book and coaching book I have read to date.Note - I received this book as part of the Librarything Early Reviewers program, where I received an advance copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

One Goal: The Book th that will open your mind, and enrich your knowledge By Cesar One Goal, it's definitely the book that will enrich your knowledge regarding managerial skills not only in soccer but, also in many other areas. Perfect book that I would recommend to Coaches, Parents, Players

Soccer Coaches Will Love By amvk One Goal: The Mindset of Winning Soccer Teams by Bill Beswick has great advice for a soccer coach, and much of the book has good tips for a coach of any sport. Every few pages, a highlighted box gives a great quote, a list of guidelines, or some other kind of tip which could actually be used as a poster in a locker room. One such example is, “Missing Practice 1. If I miss practice once, I will know . . . If I miss one week of practice, the fans will know.” The three main parts are direction, relationships, and performance. Checklists, pictures, tables and graphs may be found in the book. References and an index are included.Even though the book is good and soccer coaches will probably really like it, I would have preferred more gender equality in its presentation. This is the United States. Women’s soccer is very popular, but yet the book is predominantly male oriented with a few areas containing female references. The photos are male dominated. Bill Beswick’s European and professional background comes through in the stories shared. Most likely, this is a great book that soccer coaches will love. With the success of the United States women's soccer team, Mr. Beswick could have been more inclusive in the writing of this very good book.

Jacks Power: the prodigal son, heir to millions, built his own Manhattan real estate empire and revels in seeing his moniker on glittering skyscrapers around the city. Here’s a man who always loved to see his name in ink. Until now.

Cynthia Hunsaker Power: the epitome of elegance and society, the former prima ballerina met a struggling painter, fell in love, and only later learned she’d won the Power lottery.

The morning after the Power silver anniversary gala at the Waldorf, Jacks appears twice in the New York Post―once gallantly dancing with his wife of twenty-five years; and once hand-in-hand with Lara Sizemore, morning television star, exiting her Upper West Side apartment building that very same night.

Let the Divorce Games begin.

Whether they’re changing the locks on each other in their Park Avenue triplex or sabotaging each other’s dinner parties, the Powers’ split-up will trump the most scandalous divorces known to polite New York society. It’s a battle of wits, of charm, of two of the biggest egos―and personalities and bank accounts―in Manhattan, and neither side will go down without a fight.

Queen Takes King, by Gigi Levangie Grazer

From Publishers Weekly It's War of the Roses fought by The Real Housewives of New York in this hilarious if overlong morality tale of young love, old fools and happy endings. After 25 years of marriage—most of it squandered on unspoken disappointment, stifled grief and wasted affection—ex-ballerina Cynthia Power and real estate tycoon hubby Jackson are headed for divorce. At the same time, Jackson's latest condo project is teetering and Carolyn's ballet board is in turmoil. Though lesbian daughter Vivienne counsels Cynthia to think three moves ahead, Jackson, torn between his ambitious and reckless lover and imperious father, is staying in the game by sheer grit. In the end, these volatile emotional wrecks learn to rely on their hearts. Grazer (The Starter Wife) has Hollywood cred and brings a rollicking romantic-comedy tempo to her story of busting up and moving on, even if the cast is strictly celluloid: lovely to look at and unlike anyone walking this planet. Teysko Queen Takes King is a lovely "coming into your own" story about a woman who's had enough of fitting into a mold, and decides to finally step out on her own and divorce her philandering husband. It's also about the husband, who's narcissistic and in love with a national news anchor. And that news anchor, who wants more than to be a bauble on his arm. And the daughter of the philanderer and his wife, who's not sure what to do given her life of privilege. It's a very fast read, very clever, and I liked that I could root for each of the characters. Even the philandering husband had some redeeming qualities.Recommended as a good beach read. Nothing serious, nothing heavy - just a good story about people taking charge of their lives.

DIVORCE, NEW YORK STYLE By Red Rock Bookworm The characters and circumstances in Gigi Levangie Grazer's latest book QUEEN TAKES KING", could have been taken directly from the pages of your favorite supermarket tabloid.......or perhaps The New York Post's PAGE SIX.Jackson "Jacks" Power wants a divorce from Cynthia, his wife of 25 years, in order to marry Lara, a potential "trophy wife". Jacks, being Jacks, doesn't want to face the possibility of losing his tri-plex at 740 Park Avenue in the divorce so he devises a plan to ensure he retains possession of the family homestead. Cynthia, it seems, has a few plans of her own.Jacks persona is easily recognizable. He is part Donald Trump, part Tony Robbins and part Muhammad Ali in his youth (I am the greatest). Where "The Donalds" combover has been the subject of many a snarky remark, Jacks hair also seems to be a topic for discussion as illustrated by Jacks father who states, "You know that hair of yours looks ridiculous".It appears that Ms. Grazer has drawn on the invaluable resources contained in the idiosyncrasies and foibles of individuals in her inner circle and has created a cast of characters whose antics are hilarious. You will love Cynthia's shrink, Goldie with his Zorba the Greek philosophy of life and her New York Ballet Theater BFF, Margot, she of the salty language. The are just two of the colorful characters who dance through the pages of this amusing tale. With the help and encouragement of their lesbian daughter Vivi, Cynthia transforms herself and shows Jacks that she too is a "Power to be reckoned with". (pun intended). From the title Ms. Grazer gave her book it is obvious that she sees divorce as a chess game played out on the big board of life. I, however, saw it more as a game of Monopoly that attempts to answer the age old question, "Can you really be happy and fulfilled without owning Boardwalk and Park Place"??

Well narrated entertaining bit of fluff By Sandy Kay My review is of the audio CD narrated by Phil Gigante and Tanya Eby; I have not read the printed book.Part of the reason I chose this book is that I expected the plot to be light and not too involved. I wanted to listen while doing something else and not be distracted by too much plot. Basically I was not looking for serious literature and I was not disappointed. The best part of the narration was that the publishers decided to use two different narrators, male and female. Even the best narrators don't do very well with voices for characters of the opposite gender and it made the book a much more enjoyable listening experience than if one narrator had tried to do all the characters. Both narrators did a good job; I felt they captured the essence of the characters. The plot is light and amusing. The divorce fight never gets particularly nasty and the reader (or listener) never gets the feeling that either party is particularly invested in the marriage. Even the cheated on wife never feels hurt and betrayed enough for you to hate the husband and his girlfriend. It seems more of a game between the characters than real emotional content. For my purposes, it was just what I wanted. If you want some entertaining fluff based in the high income bracket world of New York, this may fit the bill. If you want something deeper, you may not be as satisfied with this book as I was.

It's a good hobby because it can also help you stay fit. MTB is an inherently dangerous activity, but the risk can be abated significantly by donning your helmet and other appropriate safety gear whenever you ride. This eBook will provide us general information and ideas on how we can choose the right mountain bike for us. Mountain Bike is an investment and going cheap is not an option if you want to make your ride very comfortable. After reading this eBook you will learn the importance of each component that will affect your ride and the different types of MTB styles. I find this eBook very helpful because it's packed with useful information and has great tips for the trail. Highly recommended!!!

I understand what the people around me want but I just feel like I should rather rest than get my self overwhelmed with physical activities when I'm already fed up with work 'til one of my friends asked me if I want to try MTB and I immediately said yes since it definitely not as stressful as what everybody does in gyms. I'm starting off this weekend and I definitely needed a good guide to this activity that I'm getting into and true enough, the book did not fail me. I have read a lot of good pointers and I consider this as a good and effective guide to this particular activity.

Read this before buying a mountain bike By Rowan It was only now that I understood the extent of preparation an individual needs before buying a bicycle, a mountain bike in particular. It was from this book that I got acquainted with the different types of mountain bikes. The blend of theory and tips helped me a lot. The chapter that discussed the preparation for an MTB journey was the one that got my interest hyped to purchase a mountain bike. Now, at least I know better and will not be blinded by sales talk. The only thing that lacked in this book are images or samples of the types of bikes and gear needed. Other than that, this is an excellent guide for beginners.

Carlton Fisk retired having played in more games and hit more home runs than any other catcher before him. A baseball superstar in the 1970s and 80s, Fisk was known not just for his dedication to the sport and tremendous plays but for the respect with which he treated the game.

A homegrown icon, Fisk rapidly became the face of one of the most storied teams in baseball, the Boston Red Sox of the 1970s. As a rookie making only $12,000 a year, he became the first player to unanimously win the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1972, upping both his pay grade and national recognition. Fisk's game-winning home run in Game Six of the hotly-contested 1975 World Series forever immortalized him in one of the sport's most exciting televised moments. Fisk played through an epic period of player-owner relations, including the dawn of free agency, strikes, and collusions. After leaving Boston under controversy in 1981, he joined the Chicago White Sox, where he played for 12 more major league seasons, solidifying his position as one of the best catchers of all time.

Doug Wilson, finalist for both the Casey Award and Seymour Medal for his previous baseball biographies, uses his own extensive research and interviews with childhood friends and major league teammates to examine the life and career of a leader who followed a strict code and played with fierce determination.

Pudge: The Biography of Carlton Fisk, by Doug Wilson

Review

“You don't have to go through Carlton Fisk's famous Fenway Park foul-pole theatrics when you read Doug Wilson's biography. This is a home run all the way, a straight-ahead blast that travels from New Hampshire (of all places) across a stormy 24-year major-league career and lands in Cooperstown. Read it and enjoy.” ―Leigh Montville, NYT bestselling author of The Big Bam and Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero

“Carlton Fisk was the best catcher in Red Sox history both offensively and defensively. He was also a great teammate who loved the game. Wilson's book is terrific. It brought back many memories of Pudge as a teammate on and off the field and has so many different accounts of his life growing up in New Hampshire and his years with the White Sox. Just a great job.” ―Rico Petrocelli, former Red Sox great

“Wilson received much-deserved praise for his biographies of Mark Fidrych and Brooks Robinson. This fine book is every bit their equal.” ―Booklist, starred review

“A well-researched account of a legendary ball player.” ―Library Journal

“Wilson delivers a solid look at the prodigious career of one the finest baseball players of the '70s.” ―Publishers Weekly

"This comprehensive biography takes a look at his full body of work playing the most physically demanding position in the game and in the process earning selection as both a unanimous Rookie of the Year in 1972 and a Hall of Famer in 2000." - The Christian Science Monitor

Fisk divided his 24 years behind the plate with both the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. What I especially enjoyed about the book is that it wasn't a year-by-year and play-by-play of games in which he took part. To me Fisk's two most memorable moments in his baseball career would be his historic home run in game six of the 1975 World Series and his chastising of opposing player Deon Sanders for not running out a pop fly ball. Any baseball fan would remember game six and where they were at the time but Fisk calling out Sanders for not respecting the game is very memorable to me as well. Pudge took part in more games behind the bat than any other catcher. However, in order to accomplish that fete he had to punish his body in the workout room even after catching a full game and for a neophyte like Sanders to disrespect the game was too much for Fisk even though it was a player on the opposing team.Fisk played more games for Chicago than for Boston and there was some question as to which hat he would wear on his Hall of Fame plaque since he left both teams under uncomfortable circumstances. Fisk initially chose Chicago since he played more games there but later changed his mind to Boston. Everyone has someone we especially remember in our field of work who influenced us the most and the choice for Fisk was batting coach Walt Hriniak.Whatever one's line of work we need to give our best effort and this book on Carlton Fisk makes good reading for young readers as well to emphasize the importance of respecting our line of work whether it be baseball or anything else. I have author Doug Wilson's books on Mark Fidrych and Brooks Robinson and his latest effort on Carlton Fisk is another important addition to my library.

Wilson does another serviceable job By Bookreporter Born and bred in Red Sox Nation, Carlton Fisk was the epitome of the New England ethic: stern but fair, hardworking, blunt and not willing to take guff from anyone. Even as a rookie catcher, he refused to kowtow to veteran pitchers who didn’t think such an inexperienced busher had anything to tell them.Because Fisk was a local product --- born in Bellows Falls, Vermont, and attending high school and college in New Hampshire --- he was understandably a darling to the Red Sox faithful, especially when it came to facing the archenemy New York Yankees and his chief rival behind the plate, Thurman Munson.Fisk and the Red Sox had their ups and downs before and after the 1975 World Series --- their only appearance in the Fall Classic --- despite having such stars as Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, Dwight Evans, Luis Tiant and Carl Yastrzemski. The defining moment in Fisk’s career --- the one that eventually will lead off his obituary --- took place 40 years ago, when he launched his famous 12th-inning home run in Game Six of the 1975 World Series, considered by many the greatest contest ever played. (In 2009, Mark Frost published GAME SIX: Cincinnati, Boston, and the 1975 World Series: The Triumph of America's Pastime; Fisk’s image graces the cover.)Replays of Fisk “willing” the ball to stay fair, clapping and jumping in the air when it did, enhanced the concept of a sport played by grown men who had a lot of little boy in them, as Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella used to say. (As an aside, the iconic video of Fisk’s historic blast, a staple of highlight shows of the biggest moments in sports, a) was an accident, attributed to the cameraman’s inability to move because a large rat was sitting on his root; and b) became the standard for the “up-close-and-personal” shot, as opposed to a wider view of the action.)But no matter what lovely stories we hear about the beloved national pastime, baseball is a business. Doug Wilson does a good job of explaining how free agency shifted the power from owners to players and how that affected those two parties as well as the fans, who weren’t always on the side of the athletes, whose earnings were putting them out of reach with the common man.As much as Fisk enjoyed playing in New England for obvious reasons, he was miffed when the Red Sox offered him no support or advice as he was recuperating from a horrific accident sustained as the result of a home plate collision in June 1974, returning to action almost a full year later. Ownership determined he was replaceable, just as they felt about any player, with the exceptions of superstars like Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle. When the Red Sox failed to offer Fisk a contract by the established deadline following the 1980 season, he signed with the American League’s other hosiery team, the Chicago White Sox. In fact, he played longer in the midwest (13 seasons) than he had in the northeast (11), retiring at the age of 45 after an astounding 24 seasons, during which he was a Rookie of the Year and an 11-time All-Star. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2000.Wilson, whose previous baseball work includes biographies of Brooks Robinson and Mark “The Bird” Fidrych, does another serviceable job in telling the story of a young man who excelled and loved the game for himself, but brought joy to millions of fans as well.Reviewed by Ron Kaplan

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a glowing love letter to New England’s greatest professional baseball player By Jane Easterly Baseball is my favorite sport, and Carlton Fisk is my favorite baseball player. I named my first car Carlton Fisk, and for the seven years I owned it I had a little cardboard pop-up Carlton Fisk affixed to the dashboard. (It was a good thing I decided to buy a bunch of them, as I had to replace the figure each year due to fading from the sun.)I just finished the extremely enjoyable book Pudge: The Biography of Carlton Fisk by Doug Wilson. Although Fisk was not interviewed for the book – participating in the writing of his own biography would be too much like bragging for Fisk – it is not a tell all. Or maybe there is no all to tell regarding Fisk. If you are looking for dirt on Carlton Fisk - if there is dirt on Carlton Fisk - don't look here. Pudge is not that book. It is a glowing love letter to New England’s greatest professional baseball player. The author is an unabashed admirer of Fisk, and since I am also, I loved the book. My coworker rolled his eyes when I read this passage outloud:He was a man who undeniably exemplified all the attributes they wanted to believe about themselves as New Englanders: he was tough, independent, and principled. Stoic and in control, he spoke what he believed, said what needed to be said and little else. He was Calvin Coolidge in John Wayne’s body. And his posture: tall, ramrod straight; just hand him a musket and he could pose for a statue of a minuteman, keeping faithful watch to protect the citizens from tyranny, marauders, and even Yankees. (p. 81)Pudge is also not for you if you are looking for a quick look at Fisk’s life and career. The book goes into great detail about Fisk’s years with the Red Sox and the White Sox and especially that famous home run in the 1975 World Series. However, if, like me, you loved watching Fisk play, you admire his work ethic, you think the White Sox mistreated him, and you wish professional sports had more players like Fisk, you will probably enjoy reading Pudge.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An immensely enjoyable and heartwarming read By Mark Kasniak Closer Together by Juliet Aharoni is the story of a woman who deals with the struggles in her marriage in 1959 Israel, as told through the eyes of the book’s main character Rosalind. As the story progresses you come to experience and share in Rosalind’s deep inner thoughts which are filled with, self-doubt, insecurities, and a growing suspicion that her husband Eyal may not remain faithful to her due to an abundance of available, young ladies at his place of employment as a mechanical engineer for the Air Force. Rosalind’s self-consciousness gets further compounded by Eyal’s mother, who refuses to accept her into the family because of her German Catholic background. But, as bad as things might seem for Rosalind sometimes, she isn’t just a complete basket case, though. She’s truly is an absolutely lovable character who is warm, and thoughtful, and completely out-going for those closest to her in her life, especially in their times of despair. Aharoni does an absolutely wonderful job of keeping the flow of the story moving forward, and I found myself fully engaged in all the characters development right through to the book’s very end. Her strong writing enabled me to paint very vivid pictures of the different situations in my mind, and her ability to bring human emotion into words may be Juliet Aharoni’s greatest talent. I highly recommend “Closer Together” it’s how a romance novel should be written. A+++

An amazing read By Amazon Customer Even though I hadn't read the first book, I had no problem to sync with this one.Rosalind - the protagonist is a lovely character. The author has brought up the situations she encounters and the doubts that arise in her mind remarkably throughout the book. Another character to be mentioned is her husband Eyal who never gives up trying to help her.The airforce base scenario that unfolds looks so real and I enjoyed all the other characters with their plus points and flaws.Overall it was an amazing read and I look forward to other works from the author.

I enjoyed reading the Revealed and Hunted stories, but a little disappointed on the Harnessed story. The human pony was a little weird and not as hot.

Po Kahawai knows what it's like to have that itch beneath her skin that's hard to scratch, that sensation that promises that there is more to the stories her Tutu has been telling her, and more to the paintings her mom obsessively works on day in and day out, than meets the eye; there's even more to the treacherous mountainside that looms over the cul-de-sac where her family lives. Can Po peel back the layers of silence and myth that have built up in her home since forever, and reveal the truth?
