Bill Parcells may be the most iconic football coach of our time. During his decades-long tenure as an NFL coach, he turned failing franchises into contenders. He led the ailing New York Giants to two Super Bowl victories, turned the New England Patriots into an NFL powerhouse, reinvigorated the New York Jets, brought the Dallas Cowboys back to life, and was most recently enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Taking readers behind the scenes with one of the most influential and fascinating coaches the NFL has ever known, PARCELLS will take a look back at this coach’s long, storied and influential career, offer a nuanced portrayal of the complex man behind the coach, and examine the inner workings of the NFL.

Review “One thing you want with books like this is locker-room dish, and enough scenes are tantamount to the crazy stuff you see in a classic football insider’s account like Roy Blount Jr.’s Three Bricks Shy of a Load." – Boston Globe“Anyone who appreciates NFL history, plus any longtime fans of the Giants, Patriots, Jets, Cowboys, and Dolphins, is going to want to run out to your local bookstore to buy Parcells."– Ben Volin, Boston Globe “Parcells: A Football Life, written with Nunyo Demasio, is well worth it, especially the part that deals with his time with the Patriots, a behind-the-curtains look we so seldom get.” – Bill Reynolds, Providence Journal "For those who adore the former coach of the Giants, the Jets, the Cowboys and the Patriots, this is the tome for you." – Star Ledger "Impossible to resist" – Newsday

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. thoroughly enjoyable. an intimate portrait of a great coach By 12345678 I am a long time Giants and Bill Parcells fan. This book provides a unique look into the challenges of the life of a modern football icon. I learned a great deal about Parcells I did not know as well as the costs that come, personally and professionally, with maintaining a winning culture in a highly competitive field. Highly recommended.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Strong leaders are driven to win! By Michael Lee I grew up watching one of the all-time best linebackers in NFL history: number "56" -- Lawrence Taylor -- of the New York football Giants. And I remember watching as the imposing figure on the sidelines, whose coaching style was nothing short of driven to win: Bill Parcells. This book takes the reader on a journey from the early days of Bill's childhood -- where he was raised by a tough father -- to his induction into the NFL Hall of Fame. Because it is difficult to sum up a 500+ page biography in a short blog book review, I will hit on a few points that inspired my thinking.THE INFLUENCE OF A FATHER: There are many reasons why fathers' influence over our sons' lives are crucial. For instance, who we are as fathers/men and how we treat our children and wives cause our children to view our Heavenly Father in much the same ways as they view us. Are they afraid of us, or do they find comfort in our presence? Are we lazy, or are we driven? Who Bill Parcells was as a coach, and who he is as a man, is the direct result of his father's strong influence on him. The two men pulled no punches; they knew what was necessary to be successful; and they were driven to accomplish their goals. Many of the stories told in the book regarding Bill's coaching tenure returned to the influence his own father had on him. Fatherhood is no small task!BEING TOUGH, BUT RESPECTABLE: I think we humans tend to equate a coach (or a supervisor) being "tough" with his/her employees to being a jerk. Likewise, we may also be tempted to equate "respectable" to being liked or nice. But that isn't necessarily so. Bill Parcells cared about his players, and he cared about winning. He had high expectations of his players, and he was never afraid to have those difficult conversations that needed to be had with the people who needed to hear them. Bill was known for his tough-on-drugs approach to football, and his influence on his teams is what inspired the NFL to pursue substance abuse policies. In his system, drug users and winners did not mix. Personnel may not have liked Bill Parcells during those tough conversations, but afterward they came out on the other side as human beings. I got the feeling after reading the book they all appreciated those hard conversations, too.STRONG LEADERSHIP: Crummy teams that start at the bottom in one season and finish at the top just a few seasons later always seem to be coached by strong leaders. I've often wondered how influential coaching staffs really are, as I considered my favorite team's mediocre season with mediocre players and coaches and the possibility of them being turned around with the same players but different coaches. I think Parcells answers that question, because Bill was able to make winners out of non-winners. I talked with my wife about strong leadership in the workplace, and how Parcells's style would fit in the public sector. Imagine knowing exactly what was expected of you on a daily basis at work; Imagine being held to a known standard; and imagine knowing exactly what the rewards and consequences were for not meeting those standards. Strong leaders in those scenarios pull no punches. Employees know exactly what they're getting because strong leaders are consistently strong, rather than wishy-washy. Employees may not like to hang around that kind of supervisor, but it begs the question: Is it a supervisor's job to be an employee's friend, or to make them and the organization better?CONCLUSION: Once again, this is certainly NOT all that this book is about. There is so much more. You'll have to read this monster volume for yourself the glean what you will from it.RATING: This book was very well researched and documented, and brilliantly intertwined biographical information with sporting replay. If you're a sports fan, this book is for you...it has all the who's-who you could ever hope for in a biography. It's a no-brainer: I give this 5 stars out of 5!DISCLAIMER: I received this book free of charge from Blogging for Books in exchange for my unbiased review. All opinions are mine; they were not forced upon me. I was not promised anything in exchange for a positive review.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An Apt Title for a Fascinating Book By Steve Cavallaro Bill Parcells: A Football Life is an apt title. His life was wrapped up in football such that in a sense if there is no football there isn’t much Bill Parcells. His life also intersected with many people, and the book gives some brief background on men like Curtis Martin, Drew Bledsoe and so many others. This is a quite interesting read to be sure. It isn’t just about what happened, but gives much insight into the “whys”. You read about how he learned about scouting and rating players from Bucko Kilroy, the beginning of the 3-4 defense and other interesting aspects of football. You soon begin to think that most football executives should read this. While the book is authored by Parcells and Nunyo DeMasio it is written in the third person. There are numerous quotes from interviews of the many people in Parcells life. This helps balance Parcells perspective in many ways.In many ways the portrait that emerges is not surprising. He is a driven man. As he noted in his Hall of Fame induction he was also married to football. Just as you can’t serve two masters, you can’t serve to “wives.” His passion for football eventually cost him his marriage, and nearly cost him his daughters. But the man who didn’t parent his daughters essentially parented many young men. That is the odd, bitter irony of Bill Parcells life. Football gave him nearly everything he has, but it also took so much from him.He also emerges as a man torn by indecision apart from football strategy. He could be quite indecisive, seemingly changing his mind at very inopportune moments. As a result there was also a trail of fractured relationships with GMs and owners that paralleled his long-term relationships. So strong and decisive in some areas and so unstable in others. In other words, a real human being. As a life long Patriots’ fan, I was most interested in his time with the Patriots and his relationship with Bill Belichik. Little Bill, in many ways, is his most successful disciple. You understand Little Bill when you understand Big Bill. Much of what he learned about how to run an organization, deal with the press, draft players etc. were learned from Parcells.Parcells did not simply emerge. His father was a great collegiate athlete. Bill loves sports growing up. For a time he lived down the street from Vince Lombardi, and played with his son. Bill worked hard, very hard and studied the greatest coaches. He developed friendships with many legendary coaches. He felt the obligation to pass what he learned on to the next generation of coaches. He did well since so far his coaching tree has won 6 Super Bowls. He soaked up all he could but he also freely helped those who sought his help and advice. It was those relationships on the way that got him started. He first coaching job was under his college coach who took a new job. In this way Parcells by-passed coaching in high school. He ended up working at West Point after his high school basketball coach recommended him to his high school football coach who was the new head coach for Army. Football is the only world dominated by “who you know.” It is well illustrated in Parcells’ life but this is often how the world works.DeMasio helps Parcells’ story be told in an interesting and informative fashion. In some ways it reminds me of The Perfect Storm because it will go off on those tangents (though not nearly as long). It is a captivating story about many captivating men centered on one captivating man.[I received a complimentary copy of this book for the purposes of review.]

Known for her heartwarming observations of family life, New York Times best-selling author Nancy Thayer showcases her beloved Nantucket's snowy off-season in this emotionally gratifying and utterly entertaining story.

Holidays on this Massachusetts island are nothing short of magical, and the season's wonderful traditions are much loved by Nicole Somerset, new to Nantucket and recently married to a handsome former attorney. Their home is already full of enticing scents of pine, baking spices, and homemade pie.

But the warm, festive mood is soon tempered by Nicole's chilly stepdaughter, Kennedy, who arrives without a hint of holiday spirit. Determined to keep her stepmother at arm's length - or, better yet, out of the picture altogether - Kennedy schemes to sabotage Nicole's holiday preparations. Nicole, however, is not about to let anyone or anything tarnish her first Christmas with her new husband.

Nancy Thayer's wonderful tale reminds us that this is the season of miracles. Before the gifts are unwrapped, surprise visitors appear, and holiday joy comes to all, both naughty and nice.

MULLIGAN Set on the romantic island of Nantucket off the coast of Massachusetts at Christmas time featuring a 3 year old, an abandoned dog, newlyweds and a couple expecting their second child, you would expect a terrific story. hmmmm, What I got was Kennedy, married and 8 months pregnant with her 2nd child. And for some god forsaken reason she wants to inflict on her father the pain of remarriage to her mother - her cold as ice mother - who left their marriage for another man. Oh, and BTW he is already happily newly married to a lovely woman. The novel just lost me there. Also it was about 100 pages shorter than I thought it needed to be a deep satisfying read.Nicole, is a 50 something widow newly married to Sebastian who needs to stand up for herselfSebastian is a 60 something retired Attorney who needs to convict his daughter for immaturityKennedy is his daughter who really needs to be swept out to seaKatya is the exwife who needs to go to sea with her daughterSnix-Pooh is the dog who needs a new nameMax is the tiny tot who needs to get dialogue suited to his age and not someone much older

Kritters Ramblings By Kristin Jones Check out the full review at Kritters RamblingsNicole is the main character and the most outsider of the group, she married into this crazy dysfunctional family and this is her first Christmas in their mix. She takes quite the emotional beating while still keeping a game face on - I was extremely proud of the abuse she took, I couldn't have done it!Nicole mostly deals with a grown step daughter who even as an adult with parents that have been separated for awhile dreams of her family reuniting. I found her to be the most frustrating and each time she spoke, I cringed.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Sweet Holiday Fare By Gayla M. Collins "A Nantucket Christmas" is a sweet, cozy read that pulls a few punches, but mainly caught me up in the fever for Nantucket holiday fare. The story line I have read often, but then I chose to read softer, more hopeful books around the holidays. The characters are enjoyable if not entirely believable. The plot is sweet especially with the deserted dog. My eyes misted up at his story line. So, the writing was presented well enough that I could believe that the dog was narrating for me at times.I recommend it around the holidays and hope it brings joy to your life.

CODENAME CUPCAKE is an old fashioned stay-at-home-mom turned super-hero spy novel. It is the story of Molly Peterson, a frazzled mother of two, who is recruited by a super spy agency to infiltrate the PTA at her own son's elementary school. A staunch PTA avoider, Molly is disappointed to learn that her assignment will require her to not only join the PTA but “become” the PTA. Midwood Elementary School is cooling at an alarming rate and Molly must spend as much time as possible in the building to determine the cause and help prevent a potential calamity. With a back drop of ordinary school functions including back to school night and a fall concert, CODENAME CUPCAKE offers a new twist on the super hero genre. It is a send up of motherhood, the PTA, comic books and spy novels. It is fast paced and funny with the underlying message that life really is better when you have super powers.

Review "I was pleasantly surprised to find how the book combines different themes and yet follows one single track. It has got humor and part of that is satirical. What is great about the story is that the pivotal figure is a regular person, a "frazzled mother of two" as the description says and she is definitely lovable! If you're looking for thrill, you'll find quite a lot of that too! I'd say this book is worth checking out! No matter what you prefer reading, Codename Cupcake will entertain you and put a smile on your face!" - The Page Hungry Bookworm"'Cupcake' is a witty spoof of spy thrillers." - The Montclair Times

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Laughed out Loud By Brian Sokol True story: On my nightstand I had two books: Last year's Pulitzer Prize winner "All the Light They Cannot See" which I was 100 pages into, and "Codename Cupcake" . I cannot tell a lie, the former is the greater literary achievement. BUT which book did I actually want to read more? It was Codename Cupcake. I laughed out loud at the adventures of a struggling stay-at-home mom recruited into a super secret organization to infiltrate the PTA and investigate strange goings on at her son's school. I am still only 100 pages into "All the Light..." but I finished "Cupcake" and am ready for the sequel

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. My kind of PTA mom! By Canuck in NJ I read a lot of books, and never have I come across a character like Molly. She's the most awesome non-Marvel superhero out there. A "frazzled mom of two" living in New Jersey (yeah, me too!), Molly is the kind of mom I want to hang out with. Part comedy, part sci-fi, part spy thriller, Codename Cupckae is a laugh-out loud, spit-out-your-tea romp that reminds us that we're doing the best we can as moms, although a superpower boost would help from time to time (and a traffic-free underground shortcut into NYC would be spectacular!).
