Without giving too much away, it is a fascinating study of the effect of the diagnosis of a potentially fatal disease in a young person on the patient, their family and also on the doctors.Medical practitioners will resonate with the emotional turmoil of dealing with an angry, vengeful patient. The doctors are credibly portrayed as flawed human beings.

Very topical subject, giving insights into differing points of view of coping with cancer, and particularly how it impacts many people .

My heart belonged to Branch and Brooks Valentine since we were children, when we were all too naïve to know what that even meant. We didn't understand that when we became adults, love would change us. I had to make a choice, and when I did, it ripped our bond apart. Brooks left town, and he took half of my heart with him. It was difficult, but I coped and planned my future with Branch. I thought I'd made the right decision. I loved him, and I always had.

Brooks showed up to be our best man the night before our nuptials. After drinks and too much reminiscing, I ended up in bed with the wrong brother. To avoid the humiliation and the fact that I'd ruined all of our lives, I left Branch and the only family I'd ever known.

That's where my story should have ended.

Almost three years, one beautiful little girl, and an abusive marriage later, I was standing there staring at the man who would always hold my heart.

The only question was...

Would I give it to him?

I'm Katy Michaels, and this is my story.

32 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Don't do it! By Anna E. Stonefield When I rate a book highly, 4-5 stars, I don't always feel the need to review it at length or give reasons. When I review a book poorly, under 4 and I can pinpoint or explain what didn't work for me, I try to do it.I saw this book on Amazon and then researched it here. It was hailed as wonderful with all the five star reviews. Even though I noticed a large number of those were Beta and ARC readers, I decided I liked the love triangle premise. At 25%, I was ready to text my fellow book club members to get on this book! It was an interesting premise, it flowed well with interesting characters and emotions. The author did a FAB job pacing the book and growing relationships of the three principles through junior high, high school, and college. The turning point for me was when Katy moved to SC.Katy fled the twin brothers, Brooks and Branch she was in love with, and met Bobby in small town America. Bobby was a true friend to her and helped her through her heart break over the twins. He was patient and caring for her through her pregnancy from another man, even willingly marrying her so she could get added to his health insurance. He admitted his love for her and she was honest with him that she cared, but wasn't in love with him. Bobby did become abusive on a couple occasions and they separated. He entered counseling and still helped her, treating her child as his own. When he was injured, she moved him back in to help him out and they reconciled. All the while, Katy was still harboring emotions for another. She was so incredibly wishy washy I started to hate her. Long story short, she reaches back out to her true love and baby daddy, Brooks, through letters. She never tells him she is married to another, she never tells him about his kid. She never tells her husband she is doing this. Brooks letters stop and she assumes he has been killed in action as he was in the Army stationed in Afghanistan. She comes clean to her husband about her pen pal habits and he helps her through Brooks' death. She even goes so far at this point to promise Bobby she is over Brooks and in love with him and she wants to start trying for a baby with him! Brooks comes back from Afghanistan to finally be with her only to see her with Bobby and a toddler. He assumes she has moved on and realizes she lied in her letters about still loving him, so he walks away. She receives a delayed letter from Brooks in the mail that tells her he was only injured and shipping back to the states to a base very close to where she is, doing this in the hopes that they can reconcile. Katy immediately goes to see him at the base throwing herself at him and admitting she kept his kid from him.Brooks starts a relationship with his daughter that Bobby fully supports, even though it pains him to think of losing the child he accepted and treated as his own. Bobby is heartbroken, but leaves Katy and tells her to think about what she wants. If she is still in love with Brooks, as much as it would kill him, she should then be with him. Katy calls Bobby begging him to come home, professing her love for him alone. Stupid Bobby goes back. Her first time chaperoning a visitation between Brooks and their child ends with her kissing him and telling him he is the only one she ever loved, with poor Bobby waiting for his family at home alone! After overhearing Katy professing her feelings to Brooks, Bobby smacks her around a couple times and she has him arrested! What? This may be the only time I have ever cheered on a man hitting a woman. She was jerking him around so badly, yet we are supposed to feel bad for her? I wanted to beat her ass for the head job she was doing on Bobby. Now after this, Brooks saves the day whisking her and their baby away. The author really needs to clean this story up so she turns Bobby, who before was willing to let Katy go be with Brooks, into a crazed stalker. He attempts to kidnap Katy, and after a car accident he dies. She feels responsible and is sulking. Again. This book had so much potential, but about a third of the way through, I wanted to choke Katy! The book also became heavy with inner musings and monologues. I don't think I have ever experienced a more immature and selfish character as Katy Michaels. I awarded this book two stars instead of one, giving the author credit for the first quarter of the book.Avoid this book, don't believe the hype.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. sorry By Amazon Accustomed born to read I am usually a big fan of this author but I'm sorry to say I had to skip through to finish. The h is so needy she drove me crazy! Not to mention she can't make up her mind whose bed she should be in. She went from loving one brother to deciding she would marry his twin, to sleeping with the other brother the night before she's to marry, to marrying another guy rotationally different and telling him she'd never love him. Then sleeping with one of the twins again. Ok. So, are you as confused as I felt was while reading this? Don't even get me started about the big secret at the ending. That was really so unnecessary. I still can't believe it was even in the book. I guess there are a lot of readers that like a lot of drama. Sorry to leave such a poor review but I am only telling you what's in the book. It might be something you would like. It's my opinion.

38 of 50 people found the following review helpful. If Katy flip-flopped any more, she'd be an Olympic gymnast By Gail H Ay caramba, this book was highly rated by friends, so when I realized early on that I wasn't enjoying the book, I thought it was me and not the book. The deeper that I got into the book, I knew that my displeasure was valid. I haven't seen a female flip-flop as much since Mary Lou Retton at the Olympics. Katy has spent much of her teen life living with her deceased parents' best friends. Katy decides that she is in love with her foster brothers, and chooses one to be her love and future, while secretly desiring the other brother (this all took place while still in high school). So we witness her repeatedly proclaiming that she loves the one brother, Brooks, yet she says she is making the right decision of dating the other brother, Branch. They are all living in the same house, and no one seems to be bothered with the situation or that it's weird. Maybe I'm weird, especially when she unknowingly sleeps with the wrong brother twice. Brooks goes his own way after graduation, and Katy grieves after him in one breath, then in the next breath, she is relieved that she picked Branch.A few years pass, then on the night before her wedding night, Katy makes a big ole mistake. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but throughout the book, I read where Katy is so worried that she will make her family mad and she couldn't bear to lose them, so she hides from them. On one hand, she is in love with Brooks, but she won't have any contact with him, but she professes that she'll never love another man. She finds another man, Bobby, tells him that she'll never love him, but enters into a relationship. She says she knows that she'll never truly love Bobby, but then is determined to stay with him and make the relationship work, while secretly contacting Brooks. One day when she meets Brooks, that evening when Bobby finds out, she professes that she'll never leave Bobby for Brooks. By the end of the next day, she is back with Brooks. It's a reoccurring theme throughout the book. The citizens in Sumter,SC are written to look like backwoods hillbillies. When dealing with domestic abuse, the abuser's family and friends tell Katy that it's her fault. Throughout the story, Katy is stating that she doesn't deserve his abuse, but then in the next breath, she has caused the abuser to become violent. I could almost get her reaction if she grew up in this type of environment, but she didn't grow up around abuse. Katy recognized that the abuse was wrong in the beginning, but she stayed in the relationship because the hillbilly friends and neighbors that she has known for less than a year or two have convinced her that the abuser deserves a second, third, and fourth chance.I thought in the beginning that maybe the story was good, but the book and I just weren't compatible, but the more that I read, I realized that I was justified in being pissed at all the crap being said and then a sudden reversal in the next sentence. Katy did so many reversals and flip-flops that she should have been called Nadia Comaneci.

Tennis: Top 5 Strategies & Tactics to win more Tennis Matches

Today only, get this Amazon bestseller for just $0.99. The first part of this book is best used as an introduction to the Tennis game and how to play it properly. Basically I introduce the scoring system, backhand, forehand, serving and what makes up a tennis court (Lines and the area of a Tennis court). The second part of this book goes into the top 5 strategies I've discovered and how you can use them to improve your Tennis game. Whether that just be during practice or during the actual match. If you apply what you learn here I can almost guarantee your improve. Its OK reading what's here and agreeing with it, just like any other practical book, but without the action and application of what you've learnt then its pointless. That is the point of this book and what I hope you do with the information you learn here. As well as the top strategies you'll learn here more information is provided on what you can do to warm up during a practice session, or before a match. Basically a section of this book is diverted to practice games and group warm up sessions. This is mainly for social Tennis and group games if that's what your interested in, but it also applies to single matches and doubles. Now I’ve ordered these strategies in the order of importance I believe they go under. But that is just my opinion you may have a different order or in fact feel there are better strategies out there. If that is you then that’s OK not everybody is going to agree on everything, there isn’t one way to it.

I have learned and implemented many of the new techniques and forms in this book which has improved my over performance and my serving style. This book is written step by step and the author explains goes into small details as many other books don't cover the basic which tells me they don't care about their readers. the instruction is written professionally and I could tell that this book was written who knows the inside and out the tennis and has great experience in teaching tennis.

Anything I might have learned was lost in this frustration. The information was pretty elementary and not what I was hoping for either. If you are a beginner and don't mind typos then this book might be helpful. Otherwise waste of time and ¢99 I'll never get back.

Who was the first goaltender to wear a mask in a game? Who was the last to go without one? When did goalies start painting their masks? These are just a few of the questions that are answered in this definitive book on goalie masks. Saving Face looks at the development of the mask from its earliest days as a rudimentary face-saving device to its current high-tech design, bullet-proof construction, and cutting-edge artwork. The book offers a visual journey, too. More than 150 historic and modern photos, including thirty-plus full-page shots of some of the most famous masks ever created, support a text that weaves the tale of the mask’s development. Review “[A]n enjoyable book. The vast majority of hockey fans will likely find something to appreciate in the accessible and entertaining historical segment of the text which covers the first two-thirds of the book, and few if any will be able to resist the simple appeal of scrolling through the beautiful pictures of goalie masks...” --Edmonton Journal

From the Inside Flap Who was the first goaltender to wear a mask in a game? Who was the last to go without one? When did goalies start painting their masks?

These are just a few of the questions-each with a fascinating story behind it-that are answered in this definitive book on goalie masks.

Saving Face: The Art and History of the Goalie Mask looks at the development of the mask from its earliest days as a rudimentary face-saving device to its current high-tech design. bullet-proof construction and cutting-edge artwork.

Saving Face is a visual journey, too. More than 150 historic and modern photos, including 30-plus full-page shots of some of the most famous masks ever created, support a text that weaves the tale of the mask's development.

Based on extensive archival research and exclusive interviews, Saving Face tells the story of the goalies behind the mask, and their fight for the right to wear one. It also looks at mask makers, like the little-known face-mold-making pioneers who experimented with materials such as plastic fiberglass in basement workshops, and the talented artisans and artists behind hockey's modern masterpieces.

While goaltenders the world over owe a debt of thanks to those who created, developed, championed and continuously improved the mask, hockey fans everywhere are thankful too. For the mask today has gone far beyond its original function-saving face-to become the most unique and intriguing piece of equipment in all of sports.

By Anthony Accordino The Book "SAVING FACE: The Art and history of the Goalie Mask", by Jim Hynes and Gary Smith, proves to be a captivating journey back in time. This wonderful and lavishly illustrated book, traces the history of the Goalie mask from it's very antiquated beginnings, to the modern era. This book will have special meaning for all those older fans who were there during the the decades of the 1960's and 1970's, when the goalie mask changed the the art of goaltending forever. On November 1st,1959, Montreal goalie Jacques Plante was struck in the face by a puck shot by New York Ranger Andy Bathgate. Against his coaches wishes, Jacques came out of the lockeroom and with mask in hand, and the rest is history. Jacques plante and his innovation of the goalie mask, started the golden age of goaltending as both a protective piece of equipment and an artistic statement of individual personality, in which each mask became as famous as the men who wore them. As one reads through this encyclopedic like history of the mask, the reader is treated to a tour deforce of over 50 years of NHL mask innovation. See all the greats in both text and photo's, as you are taken behind the scenes of each mask, and learn about the men who made them, and the players who made them famous. This is a who's who of goaltending. Names Like Ken Dryden, Gerry Cheevers, Tony Esposito, Terry Sawchuk, Gump Worsley, Johnny Bower, Glenn Hall, Eddie Giacomin, Bernie Parent, and Martin Brodeur are just a few of the names you will recognize. I consider this book a must have for any fans, players and coaches both young and old, who have an appreciation for the game of ice hockey. More importantly, this is one of the finest hockey history books ever written. This book comes with my highest recommendation, and should be a part of any serious hockey library.

By Thomas Duff Being a long-time hockey fan (and having a certain affinity for goalies), I knew I had to get this book when I saw it appear on my RSS feed... Saving Face: The Art and History of the Goalie Mask by Jim Hynes and Gary Smith. If you're not a hockey fan, you might wonder how on earth you could write a book about a single piece of sporting gear, and not even a actual part of the game at that! Ah, if you *are* a fan of the game, you know that the goalie mask has a rich and storied history. Jim Hynes and Gary Smith do an excellent job in telling that story, complete with great photographs from the first leather padding to the "mage" works of art that are used these days.Contents:Forward by Gerry CheeversIntroductionThe InnovatorsThe Golden AgePaint Jobs and Metal BarsThe Freedom of ExpressionIndexPicture CreditsAcknowledgmentsWhen the game of hockey first started, goalies played just as everyone else did... no helmet, no mask. It wasn't as deadly as it might sound now, as the sticks at that time almost guaranteed that the puck never left the ice surface. Besides, goalies were forbidden by rule to go to the ice to block a shot. It was all standup goaltending. But as the game progressed, the sticks got lighter, the shots started leaving the ice, and goalies were allowed to do just about anything to block a puck. As you might imagine, this resulted in a number of rather graphic injuries. One of the first goaltenders to try out facial protection in the NHL was Clint Benedict in 1930. His mask was made of leather, and covered the forehead, nose, and cheeks. In hindsight, it seems to be a no-brainer decision to wear masks, but back then it was a major controversy. Your courage was questioned, coaches forbid the practice, and fans couldn't see the faces of their favorite players. But as the number of injuries declined and the mask technology advanced, more high-end goalies started to adopt them. 1958 led to the introduction of the fiberglass molded mask (think Freddie Krueger style), and not too soon after that, the tradition of decorating the mask took off. What started off as a joke by Cheevers painting stitches whenever he got hit with a puck, progressed to the incredible paint jobs you see in the league today. These custom paint jobs often cost thousands of dollars and can take well over a week to complete. Hynes and Smith complete their history by showing how the fiberglass mask gave way to the "birdcage" style popularized by USSR goalie Vladislav Tretiak during the 1992 Summit Series. And from there, we go to the most familiar style these days, the combination mask that combines the mask and cage into a sleek, wrap-around design that offers the goalie an incredible amount of safety from slapshots traveling at 100 miles per hour. There's no other single piece of sporting gear that can reflect the personality of the wearer as much as the goalie mask. Between their concise but complete history and the detailed photographs of masks over the years, Hynes and Smith have created a book that most hockey will enjoy, and all goalies will want to own. Even though I knew some of the history before I started this, the story took on a whole new level of color and flavor with Saving Face. I'm sure both of my sons who play hockey (one of which is a goalie), will enjoy reading this book immensely. I just have to convince him that his pure black combination helmet is perfectly acceptable, and that dad doesn't have that kind of money for a custom paint job. :)

Picture perfect By WDX2BB "Coffee-table books" often are as good as their pictures."Saving Face" has really good pictures. This book by Jim Hynes and Gary Smith probably goes into the category of "Why didn't I think of that?" A good look at goalie masks was long overdue. It seems pretty ridiculous, but goalie masks are a relatively recent development even though goalies have been putting their faces in front of vulcanized rubber for generations. While some trial-and-error work was done in the 1920's and 1930's, Jacques Plante usually gets credit for popularizing masks. He wore one on Nov. 1, 1959, not listening to those who said it would hurt his play or be "less than manly" ... as if avoiding stitches was less than manly. The mask worked for Plante, and eventually the idea was copied around the league. Within 12 years, everyone wore one.The masks were pretty basic in the early days of their development, but eventually someone had the bright idea to paint one. The idea caught on, and now NHL masks probably could go in any art gallery in the country and fit in.The mask is the public face of the goalie, of course, so it's fun to look back and instantly recognize players just from that. Tony Esposito had a white mask with a circular pattern of holes. Ken Dryden used the Canadiens' logo and colors. Vladislav Tretiak of the USSR popularized the cage. And perhaps most famous of all -- in fact, it's on the cover -- Gerry Cheevers drew lines where he thought the stitches would have gone had he not been wearing facial protection. It's a classic look.At $35 for 160 pages, this book is not going to be considered a bargain. (Try the used section for a bargain.) Hynes and Smith go through the story in brisk fashion, reviewing those who invented or tinkered with masks. Sidebars on important people are sometimes redundant from the main text, and it would have been nice to hear from some more NHL goalies, past and present, about their masks. They figure to be experts on the subject.Still, "Saving Face" is mostly about the pictures, and they are often stunning. It's almost guaranteed that the goalie in your family will cherish this.

Minus the really steamy sex scenes, there is also enough plot and characterization to carry the story. That’s always a nice thing.Jasmine is a girl who is down and out when it comes to getting a job. The handsome Ethan Cole offers her $3 million in exchange for being his mistress and personal assistant (mixing work and pleasure!) for six months. The series covers their meeting all the way to the end of those six months. Do they end up in love and together forever? And does Jasmine get her money? I suggest you read and find out because it's the really fun ride!

By Abster Reinventing the wheel isn’t easy, but for me, this novel (it’s actually a set of all five parts in a series) hits all the right spots! It’s got an interesting set up with the heroine being outright asked to be an escort of sorts in exchange for a hefty sum at the end of six months. It’s got a standoffish billionaire who actually just wants to love someone. It’s even got a bit of a villain who really goes off the wall in the final and somewhat suspenseful part. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down! This is definitely for billionaire romance fans looking for a new voice in the genre. This was an advanced copy for review.

Ethan is the epitome of the kind of guy I like to see in romances. He’s alpha but without being a jerk (or at least not as much in some books.) He’s actually quite respectful in the context of the situation. Sure, he does some pretty raunchy things with Jasmine, but he’s a true gentleman about it.If you’re looking for a somewhat softer alpha billionaire then this is the book for you. And if you like it spicy, you’ll still like it! Just because he’s a gentleman doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to spank a girl…
