0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved it By S. Frank This is Jake's story and takes place at the same time as Ben's story (Nine Months to Change His Life). Both books begin with the sinking of the yacht and Jake's rescue by helicopter, this one told from the perspective of Jake and Ellie. Jake is furious and horrified that he's the one rescued and his brother Ben left behind on the life raft in the middle of the raging storm. He has no choice but to accept Ellie's assurances that the rescuers will do everything possible to save Ben. In the meantime, the two of them are stuck together on a deserted island to wait out the storm.Jake is a famous actor who is due to start filming a movie. He has grown a beard and long hair for the part, so he doesn't look like his usual self. He's surprised that Ellie hasn't recognized him, but doesn't enlighten her, happy for a chance to just be himself. He's attracted to the beautiful, capable woman and doesn't want her to look at him differently because of who he is.Ellie had been determined to save at least one of the two men that they found floating in the life raft. Knowing the the chopper couldn't carry them for long, she had it drop them off on the island that her family owns to wait out the storm. She's not sure what it is about him, but she feels safe with Jake. There's a spark of attraction between them, but they are rescued before anything comes of it. It isn't until they are back in civilization that she finds out who Jake is, and she feels betrayed that he hadn't told her the truth.Ellie had been betrayed by another man who hadn't been truthful with her, and she feels that history is repeating itself. Finding out that Jake is someone who basically lies for a living devastates her, because she had already begun to care for him. Once they are back, she doesn't plan to see him again. Jake, on the other hand, really wants to see her again. He felt that they had had the beginnings of something special. He finds a way to get her to the movie set, which gives him the chance to try to win her over. But Jake's problem is that he has spent so much of his life playing one part or another, in both his professional and personal lives, that sometimes the lines between real life and fantasy get blurred. He tries very hard to be himself with Ellie, but sometimes he doesn't know who that is. I loved seeing how hard he worked at it, and ached for him each time a lifetime of habit ended up coming between them. He had several really sweet and romantic moments that should have won her over, but something always seemed to happen to tarnish them.Ellie also allows her fears to get the better of her on several occasions. There were times when I wanted to shake her and tell her to just give the man a chance, especially that last time when he tried to explain how he felt. I loved her "a ha" moment, when she finally saw the truth and what she had almost thrown away. There was another section of overlap, when Jake and Ben met to try to deal with Ben's revelations about their mother. Both of them said some rather harsh things to each other, and both left the meeting with something to think about. I liked seeing Jake face up to his mistakes and try to find a way to overcome them. I loved the way he got Ellie's friend involved in executing his big moment. It was really sweet to see what he came up with for their future and how perfect it was for both of them. The epilogue was a great wrap up for both brothers.

The first book is, Nine Months to Change His Life. Both books are stand alone's. Nine months to change his life was about Mary rescuing Ben during a deadly hurricane. Book 2, is about Ellie a paramedic rescuing Jake (Ben's twin brother) from the hurricane. The twins yacht crashed and broke apart during the hurricane. They were riding through the rough waves in a flimsy life raft. Ellie was part of a rescue team. The chopper was already full when she spotted the life raft. She convinced her captain that she could save one of the two people. She knew she had to risk her life. She also knew that no one else could fit in the helicopter, so she would have to hold onto the person, and be dropped off at the nearest land to ride out the storm. It was a chance she knew she had to take. She knew the perfect place to ride out the storm, if they could just get there. During the rescue operation I had to hold my breath. Great story, with romance intertwined within the pages of the story. This was not a fast pace romance by any means. It took time for Jake, and Ellie to build up trust, and a friendship, and take down walls they had built around their hearts. It was slow, and sweet.here are Some of my favorite lines of the book.Sample from chapter 8, - Funny how Jake's words kept echoing in her head during that drive. And it was definitely motivating to imagine watching herself on the big screen here, Cheering herself on. Facing obstacles and overcoming them. Practicing being the best person she could be, even if it felt like the skin didn't fit yet.Sample from chapter 11 - "I need to go." Ben's tone was final. "Of course you do." Jake's anger was draining away, leaving a horrible empty feeling in his gut. "People talk about emotions, you run. You've spent our lives accusing me of being like mom every time I showed emotions. Play acting. Yeah okay...maybe some of it was, but not all of it. I'm trying to figure it out at last. Maybe the real is worth fighting for. The real is even worth hurting for."

Creative enjoyable book By Carol Ford I just finished reading "Out of the Blue" and I am not sure whether my tears or smiles won while they competed with each other. Sometimes the tears were happy tears so it is really hard to say what won. This is a very creative story about two people, whom both were Amish at one point, desiring the simple lives of their pasts but still wanting some of what the world offered them. It is about family ties and love that run especially deep in Amish homes and about knowing when God has led your life to the place it is right then and opens your eyes so you can see it.Wonderfully written, fun to read, and a deep level of living for God in the midst. Well worth the time to read.

Now they are professionals, and a business situation brings Karl to Katie's office. I liked the flow of the story, and the ending is not how most Amish fiction authors end their books. For readers who read Christian books, I would recommend this book. I am giving the story four stars because of one sentences in the book that I believe was missed during proofing.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Out Of The Blue by Janice Thompson By Cynthia Lanette Burger This is a wonderful story of true love, & the power of faith in God. I believe it is true that with faith, if it is meant to be then what ever it is it will happen. This was a story of how sometimes we have to be patient for what we really want. I really enjoyed this Amish story of true love, faith and patience. This will be added to my list of favorites.

Best PDF Ebook Crossing Paths Self-Defense: Knife defense concepts: Quick Start series, by Travis D. Brown

book 3 of the Crossing Paths self-defense Quick start series. This issue deals with the concepts needed to develop a reliable approach to knife defense. As with all the quick start series it is meant to develop a specific point of interest and hopefully serve as a catalyst for further study. Goes over both the physical and psychological aspects of effective knife defense and why so many techniques tend to fail despite seeming to work in practice. A great edition to anyone's training. Introducing the beginner to important concepts and hopefully provoking thought (or reminders) in the more experienced students.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Finally, a book that confirms my adjustments and more! By Chazbo54 I give it a 5 star for the 'intended audience'. If you've read all the 'older' Harrington books, 'Theory' books, etc., can hold your own in a 'home game' but cannot believe you're barely ahead of the others who you know play just 'ok' or badly, this book can really help you. For several years the 'older' books worked for me (basically play tight and be patient). That will still work against like-minded play, but it is boring as hell and you're leaving a LOT on the table. When my win rate slipped, I knew I needed an adjustment, and was getting frustrated while trying different 'plays'. This book basically tells you how to open your game up by being aware of situations and players, then 'playing the players' while still playing solid hands ('solid' for different situations, that is). The book is geared toward playing "exploitable" poker which works VERY well at most small stakes games. It does NOT work against very good players who know how to counteract those strategies and who are "aware" of what's actually going on at the table'. Thing is, if you do play at higher level games, you will be able to adjust (I think. I'm not there yet. ;-) ) I know I'll never play at the higher stakes games anyway, so mastering these concepts work for me. Many of the concepts I already had implemented, but it is good to have a 'framework' to fall back on and it helps to see where improvement is needed. Also, if nothing else, it confirms that the adjustments I already made from 'standard play' to win at low stakes were correct. When you deviate from what you learned as 'correct play' you wonder if it is a leak in your game even when the results seemed positive. It was nice to see in print that I was actually doing it right in many cases ! Yes, there is more variance in this method of play, but not all that much and it works MUCH better and is more fun than just playing ABC poker.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. If you are looking to better your game By Daniel S. If you are looking to better your game, I can't think of a better teacher then Jonathan Little. I have read quite a few books on Texas holdem (no need to list and bad mouth other authors) and none of them have explained concepts as easy as Jonathan little does. I only play small stakes cash games so it was great to finally read something that is geared specifically for the stakes I play. Im not concerned with learning the secrets of ultra high stakes poker players (as of yet anyways) because I don't play higher then a 1/2 no limit. Its amazingly easy to read, and the concepts and strategies discussed can be implemented immediately for quick results. I laugh to myself when I do the small adjustments He recommends only to see most players do exactly what he says they will do(things I have done in the past). I have struggled with being a winning player in poker for 13 years, that is going to change now. I have NEVER made it into the money at a casino tournament. Just after using a few of the strategies held in this book I booked my first cash. It was a small win, but none the less one that I have never experienced. Thats another point. This book is for cash games, But I find that many of the strategies discussed transfer over to tournament play as well. I cant wait to read his book on small stakes tournaments next! If you want to be a better player, buy this book. If you want to find leaks in your own game, buy this book. If you want to understand the thought process of winning players, BUY THIS BOOK!!! Also, google search Jonathan Little, and you will find a vast resource list of very affordable training information he offers. To the author, Thank you for writing this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent advice in usable form fo the low stakes player. By Amazon Customer This was a lot of insight on how to beat the low stakes. I didn't learn that much but then again I already do most of the things he says to do. And you really can't hear it too often anyway. He makes some aggressive bluffs that I have yet to fully evaluate and though I follow the logic of his bet sizing advice, I can't quite agree with it. I just make too much from my big bets. (His sizing is fairly small, for low stakes buy hey, he's WAYYYY better than me so...)The strength of this book is its conversational tone that makes it accessible to the people who will benefit from it. No long algebraic proofs, no multi-page explanations of the rare expectations. So many poker books do this and it becomes an ironic situation where you have to be a good player to understand the explanation and if you are that good, you already know it!Little is the best combination of great author and great player available today. Ed Miller writes very well too (and is my fav poker author) but lacks the undisputed winning credentials of Little. If you know how to play but not how to win....if you are a winner but wonder why you're not winning more or if you are a solid winner but know that there is more money on the table than you're racking up at the end of the night this is the book for you. If you play mid-stakes or higher (5-10 or higher) you could skip this one. That's my opinion. Hope it helps.

Read Ebook Inside The Five Ring Circus: Changing Global Sports and the Modern Olympics, by Ollan Cassell, Foreword by Frank Shorter

Inside The Five Ring Circus is a compelling, first-hand account of the personalities and process that allowed the Olympic Games and international sports to continue as the ultimate meeting-place for athletes from all nations on the Fields of Friendly Strife.

Ollan tells the inside stories of the protest and boycott periods in Olympic history which saw black gloves appear on the victory stand of Mexico City 68 and vicious murders in the village in Munich '72, followed by boycotts for a twenty year period. He battled the pressure of Jimmy Carter's efforts to keep Americans out of the Moscow Olympics and felt the threat of the White House for not supporting the boycott. Lloyd Cutler, Cather's chief counsel, threatened to investigate him for carrying out his job of creating international sports competition with the USSR, Eastern bloc countries and the Cubans.

Performance enhancing drugs, like death, have been around since the ancient Olympics and remain with us today. The inside story of how we got to where we are is being brought to light for the first time. The attitude of many top officials to turn a blind eye only made the situation worse. Unafraid of the wrath of the IOC, USOC or international federations, Ollan took on the task of coordinating the USA team for the Goodwill Games, founded by Ted Turner. The highly-successful competitions provided new avenues of promotion used today by all international sports. Ted was a visionary and backed it up with his money and television network.

Inside The Five Ring Circus: Changing Global Sports and the Modern Olympics by Ollan Cassell By Dan Burstein Ollan Cassell's "Inside The Five Ring Circus: Changing Global Sports and the Modern Olympics" tells at least three remarkable stories. One is Ollan Cassell's personal biography, reminiscent somewhat of the Boys in the Boat tale--a hardscrabble childhood and adolescence leading to world records and Olympic Gold in Tokyo (1964). Second is his life in track and field and sports more generally--including a front row seat on all of the big political, social, and economic battlegrounds that underlie global sports fields from the Cold War to today. And third is a participant's look at the modern Olympic movement over the last half century--the controversies, the challenges, the people, the heroics, the corruption, and many other issues. "Inside The Five Ring Circus: Changing Global Sports and the Modern Olympics" reminds us of epic battles over drugs and testing, professionalism, TV contracts, and much more--the backstory to the Olympic competition we usually don't focus on when watching the Games on TV.

Moore, Jr. Ollan Cassell offers a well-researched, vibrant book on the state of affairs of track and field around the world for the last half of the 20th century. It was a critical period that has shaped so much of what disappoints us today, such as doping, the demise of amateurism and corruption. At the same time, Cassell chronicles the advances in skills, athleticism and spirit that continues to inspire young men and women today. It is not a coincidence that we both care about our sport; we are both Olympic gold medalists, both members of the U.S. Track & Field Hall of Fame and both served USA Track and Field and/or USOC. And we continue to share our stories and experiences, particularly with the younger generations.-- Charles H. Moore, Jr.Olympic Gold Medalist in the 400m Hurdles & Silver Medalist in 4x400m relay (Helsinki 1952); former Public Sector Director of the USOC and chair of the Audit Committee and Bid City Evaluation Task Force

By John Grasso By John Grasso, Treasurer, International Society of Olympic HistoriansThe book is well-written and makes for enjoyable reading, especially for one (like myself) who has lived through the past 50 years of Olympic history.Although the book is somewhat biographical it is not strictly a biography. Cassell provides an excellent retrospective of each of the Olympic Games from 1964 (where he ran the opening leg of the 4x400m relay in world record time and won the gold medal) to 1996 (his last as an administrator). Reading those nine summaries brought back a lot of pleasant memories. In addition many of the important changes that happened during that period such as the changing views on amateurism, commercialism, drug problems, the impact of television and political boycotts are discussed. It is a most enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.

A moving portrait of the life and legendary career of one of the NFL’s most beloved players Tiaina Baul “Junior” Seau is widely considered one of the best linebackers ever to play the game. A ten-time All-Pro and twelve-time Pro Bowl selection, Seau was picked for the NFL’s “All-Decade Team” in the 1990’s. His incredible career spanned two decades, during which time he played for the Chargers, Dolphins, and Patriots. A charismatic leader and competitor known for playing through injuries and leaving it all on the field, Seau started in almost 250 regular season games and electrified fans with his dynamic play.   In 2012, at the age of forty-three, Seau committed suicide with a gunshot wound to the chest. News of his death sent shockwaves through the NFL. Later, studies concluded that Seau had been suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a type of brain damage. His tragic death opened the door to hundreds of inquiries about the trauma from NFL players and their families.  Drawing on exclusive access to Seau’s family and Seau’s never-before-seen diaries and letters, veteran reporter Jim Trotter goes beyond the statistics to paint a moving portrait of a larger-than-life star whose towering achievements in the game came at a great cost.

Junior Seau: The Life and Death of a Football Icon, by Jim Trotter

Review “Leave it to Jim Trotter, who knew Junior Seau better than anyone in our business, to capture his competitive essence and personal demons equally well. I had so many questions about why Seau's life ended the way it did. Jim answered them with depth and compassion in this thorough and important book.”—Peter King, editor-in-chief, The MMQB “Few people knew Junior Seau like Jim Trotter, who gracefully guides readers into the unique world of one of the NFL’s most compelling figures of the last quarter-century. Trotter has achieved something rare here: he took a sports book and artistically crafted it into a lyrical narrative about dreams, love and, ultimately, heart-wrenching loss.”—Lars Anderson, author of The Storm and the Tide and The All Americans “Junior Seau shot himself in the heart, maybe to save his head for the pathologist. But Jim Trotter's book is about the heart, and of the heart.”—Tom Callahan, author of Johnny U and The G.M.  “This book demonstrates why Trotter is one of the best talents in sports journalism. He didn't just write a great book about a football legend… he wrote one of the best sports biographies of all time.”—Mike Freeman, author of Bloody Sundays and Bowden “Junior Seau lived a remarkable, passion-filled and eventually tragic life. His death may make him one of the most important figures in football history. Jim Trotter masterfully tells it all here, in a powerful book that may change the way you look at the game.”—Dan Wetzel, national columnist, Yahoo Sports  “Trotter, who covers the NFL for ESPN, tells a difficult story and tells it well...this is a powerful, thought-provoking account, handled with grace and sensitivity, of a superior football player's life and death.” —Booklist "No media member is better qualified to write this book than Trotter...it’s a highly informative, easy read."—Nick Canepa, The San Diego Union-Tribune

From the Inside Flap A moving portrait of the life and legendary career of one of the NFL’s most beloved players Tiaina Baul “Junior” Seau is widely considered one of the best linebackers ever to play the game. And if the sport had a heart and soul, Junior Seau was it. A San Diego native of Samoan descent, he sprung from a tight-knit family and community to shatter records at nearby USC.  After being chosen as the fifth overall NFL draft pick in 1990, he embarked upon a nearly two-decade professional career, including stints with his hometown San Diego Chargers, the Miami Dolphins, and the New England Patriots. Seau was a ten-time All-Pro, a twelve-time Pro Bowl selection, and was picked for the NFL’s All-Decade Team in the 1990s. A charismatic leader and competitor known for playing through injuries and leaving it all on the field, Seau started in almost 250 regular season games and electrified fans with his dynamic play.     Yet in 2012, upon his retirement from football, Seau plunged deeper into a dark period marked by erratic behavior. A few months later, at age forty-three, Seau committed suicide with a gunshot wound to the chest. The news of his tragic death sent shockwaves through the NFL. Later, studies concluded that Seau had been suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a type of brain damage caused by repeated blows to the head. Junior Seau’s suicide opened the door to hundreds of inquiries about the effects of brain trauma from NFL players and their families.   Veteran reporter Jim Trotter draws on exclusive access to Seau’s family and friends and never-before-seen diaries and letters, which provide incredible emotional insight into a man struggling with frustrations on the football field and moral failings off of it. The writings, as well as interviews with those closest to Seau—including the girlfriend who discovered his lifeless body —paint a portrait of a larger-than-life star whose towering achievements in the game made him an icon, but at a great cost.

It's a little odd because we live on the east coast. But Junior Seau was his favorite player for a long time. He was truly a man to look up to. So he's been reading this book and says that it is a great one and a good story to be told. It is written by Jim Trotter who has been a reporter for ESPN for a long time. He has compiled information from his past interviews with Junior Seau as well as other players who worked alongside him. The story seems to be a good representation of his life, his dedication to the sport and his warrior spirit. He was a generous player with his devotion and time and also a generous family man. Well written and a worthwhile look inside the intensity of football and the long lasting effects it can have on the body and mind of the players. Unfortunately for Junior, the sport took much more from him than it should have.

Effective, timely, brief and brilliantly written By Trudie Barreras From the perspective of a non-sports-fan who loves biographies, Jim Trotter’s deeply sensitive and honest story of the life and death of Junior Seau is an intensely moving one. I am not a total football ignoramus – I can watch a game (or part of one) without being completely mystified by what is happening. However, although I can probably name a few of the more well-known quarterbacks of recent times, and perhaps even get their teams right, I freely admit that I had no idea who Junior Seau was, and had to ask my husband how to pronounce his surname. For those who ARE enamored of the game of football, and who do indeed follow the careers of outstanding players, I’m sure Trotter’s descriptions of the various game details and the internal politics of the sport itself will be of great interest. For me, they provide a coherent, even if excessively detailed, backdrop for the main story, which as I’ve already mentioned, was told with great sensitivity. There is also, of course, a vitally important sub-theme of Trotter’s narrative, which has received a great deal of recent publicity. The mystique of football, as a “manly sport” where physical aggressiveness and violence are exalted and hard hitting is expected, leads inevitably to severe physical injury, especially repeated (and often untreated) concussions resulting in CTE – chronic traumatic encephalopathy. This in turn has resulted all too frequently in either early onset Alzheimer’s or other forms of neurological deficit, or to self-medication with drugs or alcohol to offset the pain – or any combination thereof. Finally, in the case of Seau, due to a cultural ethos of expecting the successful son to be the living ATM for a large extended family, financial success was perhaps even more important in his perspective than it is for many other sports celebrities. Although an inability to effectively manage huge salaries for short years is typical for many pro athletes, in Junior’s case this was greatly exacerbated by those family demands. In addition, as part of that same manly mystique, Seau was apparently completely unable to be open and honest about his personal weaknesses or to accept help and advice from those who truly loved him.All of these aspects, and many more, are combined in this very effective, very timely, brief and brilliantly written biography.

I remember him well from his time with the New England Patriots where he was well regarded and very much a fan favorite. In this short narrative about Seau's life (200+ pages) he seems to have spent much of his life trying to please people and live up to the expectations of his Samoan culture. The book really skims the surface of the popular NFL star's life, lacking depth of detail but covering everything. The end of this life is a moving and distressing section which the author really leaves us with more unanswered questions. Should the book have been longer?Trotter does he's best detailed writing when covering Seau's football career but that's really not enough to carry the book. Altogether it's not a bad read and does offer some insight it the subject life.
