Inside The Five Ring Circus is a compelling, first-hand account of the personalities and process that allowed the Olympic Games and international sports to continue as the ultimate meeting-place for athletes from all nations on the Fields of Friendly Strife.
Ollan tells the inside stories of the protest and boycott periods in Olympic history which saw black gloves appear on the victory stand of Mexico City 68 and vicious murders in the village in Munich '72, followed by boycotts for a twenty year period. He battled the pressure of Jimmy Carter's efforts to keep Americans out of the Moscow Olympics and felt the threat of the White House for not supporting the boycott. Lloyd Cutler, Cather's chief counsel, threatened to investigate him for carrying out his job of creating international sports competition with the USSR, Eastern bloc countries and the Cubans.
Performance enhancing drugs, like death, have been around since the ancient Olympics and remain with us today. The inside story of how we got to where we are is being brought to light for the first time. The attitude of many top officials to turn a blind eye only made the situation worse. Unafraid of the wrath of the IOC, USOC or international federations, Ollan took on the task of coordinating the USA team for the Goodwill Games, founded by Ted Turner. The highly-successful competitions provided new avenues of promotion used today by all international sports. Ted was a visionary and backed it up with his money and television network.

About the Author OLLAN CASSELL, who grew up in a Virginia coal mining camp, was a star athlete in high school who became a world-class track athlete in college. While serving as an army lieutenant, he won a gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo as a member of the U.S. 4x400 meter relay team. In 1965 he joined the staff of the Amateur Athletic Union, at the time the American governing body for 17 sports. Cassell eventually became AAU's executive director and the U.S. representative to the International Amateur Athletic Federation, track s world governing body. In the wake of the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, Cassell oversaw the transition of power from the AAU to The Athletics Congress, the new U.S. governing body known today as USA Track & Field. As chief executive officer of USATF, he led track and field and the Olympics from outdated amateurism to open competition. Elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2006, Cassell currently serves as president of the Indiana Olympians Association. He and his wife Cathy raised six children. They reside in Indianapolis.

Inside The Five Ring Circus: Changing Global Sports and the Modern Olympics by Ollan Cassell By Dan Burstein Ollan Cassell's "Inside The Five Ring Circus: Changing Global Sports and the Modern Olympics" tells at least three remarkable stories. One is Ollan Cassell's personal biography, reminiscent somewhat of the Boys in the Boat tale--a hardscrabble childhood and adolescence leading to world records and Olympic Gold in Tokyo (1964). Second is his life in track and field and sports more generally--including a front row seat on all of the big political, social, and economic battlegrounds that underlie global sports fields from the Cold War to today. And third is a participant's look at the modern Olympic movement over the last half century--the controversies, the challenges, the people, the heroics, the corruption, and many other issues. "Inside The Five Ring Circus: Changing Global Sports and the Modern Olympics" reminds us of epic battles over drugs and testing, professionalism, TV contracts, and much more--the backstory to the Olympic competition we usually don't focus on when watching the Games on TV.

Moore, Jr. Ollan Cassell offers a well-researched, vibrant book on the state of affairs of track and field around the world for the last half of the 20th century. It was a critical period that has shaped so much of what disappoints us today, such as doping, the demise of amateurism and corruption. At the same time, Cassell chronicles the advances in skills, athleticism and spirit that continues to inspire young men and women today. It is not a coincidence that we both care about our sport; we are both Olympic gold medalists, both members of the U.S. Track & Field Hall of Fame and both served USA Track and Field and/or USOC. And we continue to share our stories and experiences, particularly with the younger generations.-- Charles H. Moore, Jr.Olympic Gold Medalist in the 400m Hurdles & Silver Medalist in 4x400m relay (Helsinki 1952); former Public Sector Director of the USOC and chair of the Audit Committee and Bid City Evaluation Task Force

By John Grasso By John Grasso, Treasurer, International Society of Olympic HistoriansThe book is well-written and makes for enjoyable reading, especially for one (like myself) who has lived through the past 50 years of Olympic history.Although the book is somewhat biographical it is not strictly a biography. Cassell provides an excellent retrospective of each of the Olympic Games from 1964 (where he ran the opening leg of the 4x400m relay in world record time and won the gold medal) to 1996 (his last as an administrator). Reading those nine summaries brought back a lot of pleasant memories. In addition many of the important changes that happened during that period such as the changing views on amateurism, commercialism, drug problems, the impact of television and political boycotts are discussed. It is a most enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.
