BOB GIBSON is a baseball Hall of Famer who played seventeen seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals. During that time he was a two-time Cy Young Award and World Series winner. He is also the author of Stranger to the Game: The Autobiography of Bob Gibson and Sixty Feet, Six Inches, which was written with Reggie Jackson and coauthor Lonnie Wheeler.

What made this book such a joy to read and different from any other baseball books was it's told from Gibson's perspective and what he was thinking on each pitch and his progression. He also provides awesome side stories for prominent players in the 50s, 60s, and 70s and each player in the starting lineup for the Tigers and the Cardinals. From Curt Flood to Hank Aaron to Denny McLain, there are a ton of awesome stories that Bob tells with his own flare, and he's not shy about sharing his opinions. Inside the mind of one of the fiercest competitors in sports, I read this incredibly quickly and now hope that Bob will inspire other great sports icons to write similar narratives about their astounding feats. A must-read for any fan of the game.

Enshrined into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981, he was one of the reasons the “lords of baseball” decided to make the sport more hitter-friendly by lowering the mound and shrinking the strike zone. He explains the thought process behind selecting each pitch according to the Detroit Tigers’ lineup and the situation at any given moment, trying to take advantage of their weaknesses and limiting their strengths.The “one unforgettable game” was the opener of the 1968 World Series against the Tigers in which Gibson struck out 17, breaking the record of 15 set by Sandy Koufax in 1963 against the New York Yankees. Gibson had already had a season for the history books: he won 22 games and led the National League with 280 strikeouts and an earned run average of 1.12, the lowest since 1908. In fact, 1968 was nicknamed “The Year of the Pitcher.”Gibson, who turns 80 next month, writes like he pitched: straightforward and honest, aggressively but without a sense of braggadocio. He respected the opposition but did not fear them.In preparation for the book, he and co-author Lonnie Wheeler studied old videos of that historic contest to help refresh nearly 50-year-old memories. Simply deconstructing a game in such minute detail would be kind of boring. They alleviate that by dropping in anecdotes and recollections about teammates and opponents, as well as the tenor of the times, including the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy, the Vietnam War and racial issues. Heidbreder This book is an insightful recollection by Bob Gibson of the 1968 World Series and a captivating account of game 1 in which he set a record for strikeouts. His pitch by pitch thinking then and his recollections since reveal much about the professionals he played with and his own professionalism. Each chapter is an inning of pitches as well as a life time of memories and lessons shared from this most relentless competitor in the game. The prologue covers the remaining games in the series including the game 7 pitched by Bob with an unusual outcome in the field and the game that leaves him and anyone who studies it with a new insight into the meaning of the word relentless.
