I loved Grayson & Avery in The Promises We Keep, when their relationship was "Vanilla" and pure but I loved them even more in The O'Conners when they spiced it up!!!This was a story of growth, heartache, moving forward and it was done very well....My hubby and I are making a "List" ;)

Martin's debut novel, The Promises We Keep. I fell in love with them then and this novella is their time in the spotlight as newlyweds.Avery and Grayson have fought through thick and thin to be together. Marriage will prove to be no different, but the great part about it when you're married as Mr. and Mrs. O'Conner? When you get mad, you fight and you fight naked! That's fair. right? A lot of things could be worked out if many other married couples followed their style of fighting! The love between Avery and Grayson grows in this novella and will have you swooning into the honeymoon phase right along with them. They feel unstoppable and on top of of the world until the unimaginable happens and threatens to shatter both of their souls to their very core. It leaves their world in turmoil and they are not sure that they can even persevere through the darkness together; as they have always promised to do.R.C. has the ability to draw her readers in so that you feel every emotion that her beautiful characters feel. Every high as well as every low. This is going to be a steamy, hot, and exciting read that will pull at your heart strings.1 like ·

The bond that this couple shared, the need for each other, is the kind of love that lasts forever. When reality is hard and difficult, they not only face harsh emotions, but also learn that love sometimes have low moments and can be tricky....and I think it is at that very moment where they know the impact of their love.Greyson is the perfect husband in every possible way and Avery is a wonderful woman! These characters are incredibly perfect together, can't help but fall in love with them again and again“You’re my heart. Don’t ever forget that.”“I promise. You’re mine, too.”R.C. Mina’s Revolution, a historical saga set in Iran and the US. The story covers the life of an Iranian-American woman, before, during, and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran through to the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. Mina Sha’abani, born a year before the 1953 CIA-backed coup d’état in Iran and raised during the Shah’s White Revolution, gets involved in the Islamic Revolution in her early 20s. While pregnant with the illegitimate child of a political leader, she escapes to the US, in the hopes of a better life for herself and her child. In Los Angeles, in the midst of the hostage crisis, she faces the Americans’ animosity against her and her daughter Shirin. When she finds and meets one of her political mentors from Iran, Zary, her life begins to go through yet another series of changes and she has to make some more hard choices. Mina's Revolution is about growing up, making choices under pressure, struggling with morality issues, and finding grace against a backdrop of rebellion and revolution. It is the story of a life roiled by political and personal upheavals, the story of a woman who keeps trying to achieve inner peace while living in turbulent times.

Mina's world might be set in Iran and California, but the book's themes are universal: the innocence of children, the ideals of youth and the disillusionment that all too often follows. The maxim that politics makes strange bedfellows could hardly have a better example than in the depicted untenable union of communists and conservatives in a struggle to remove the last Shah of Iran. Mina flees her country for more than one reason. Her sense of isolation, anger and desperation are particularly palpable through the author's utilization of internal dialogue. The images presented to the reader as Mina struggles to understand a new way of life are powerful and occasionally haunting: a happy family outing that turns into embarrassment for Mina's parents for a reason unimaginable today; Mina sitting in JFK Airport for hours after missing her connecting flight, incapable of understanding the announcements; her response to the heartbreaking letter she receives from her sister advising her that returning home is no longer an option; the conclusion she reaches about herself and her daughter when she feels no alternatives remain; and a life-changing chance encounter. Before one can find happiness, one needs to define it which Mina eventually does. To say whether or not she attains it would give too much away. Those with an editor's eye might pick up a rare error here and there and New Yorkers will spot a geographical slip, but rather than being a distraction they convey the sense that Mina is a real person, capable of error, but equally capable of redemption.

I am an American woman married to an Iranian man and he has shared with me many things about his culture over the years. This book, however, gives the reader an insight into the true culture and thought process of women during and after the Iranian Revolution. Mehrnoosh Mazarei has so masterfully told the story of Mina's dreams, desires and struggles - all of which define her power to impact and keep the reader engaged. I truly believe if and when Mina's Revolution hits the big screen, it will command the praise of many from vast gender, social and political segments within our society. Until then, I will hope for a sequel.

As someone who is familiar with the community, I found it an accurate account of an Iranian woman migrating to the US after the 1979 revolution, told in an authentic language. The reading glides through. The plot keeps your interest. I gave it five star because I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested to know more about the Iranian-American community and to have a more personal account of the Iranian revolution.

By M.A. Stanley Her Last Words (previously published under the title Uprush) is a story about life, friendship and death. Four college friends get together annually to share their lives, they’ve been friends for forty years, through marriages, divorces, children, jobs and new lovers and through all the challenges and changes of life, they stand together. When they gather this time, they’re surprised and taken off guard at what transpires. One of them has a debilitating disease that will rob her of her mind and body, and she doesn’t want to stick around for it. Instead, she writes the story of her life, and she writes the stories of her dearest friends’ lives and ask that they finish their individual stories, but she also tells them how hers will end. This is an emotional tale that delves deep into the lives of these women, their failures and successes and everything in between. I really enjoyed it (even though it’s not my typical read) and would highly recommend it.Although this is a fantastic novel, I did find the editing/proofreading errors a bit distracting, however once the author addresses those, it’s a 5 star novel all the way! This book was provided to me for free for an honest and unbiased review (see all our reviews at http://www.bookexplosions.com/ or on Goodreads at https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/131875-book-explosions )

How would you end your life in the last chapter of your book By read-along-with-sue This story is about four women. The author divided up the chapters for each woman, which I found a good way of interacting and getting to know each woman in turn. We feel their emotions, we get to see inside, not only they're lives but their soul.Madge, Joan, Jackie and Lou met in college. Madge kept in touch with each of them even though they went their separate ways in life. They met up occasionally. Each one had to finish their own life story.Madge wants to finish hers by suicide and to do this she needs help from her friends. She wants her suicide to look like an accident. You can imagine how they others react to this. The next thing, Madge is missing. They fear for her. They report this to the Police however, she has to be missing for at least 24 hours before they take action. There are a whole lot of questions that need answers, as we learn that each woman is harboring a secret.Did Madge succeed in killing herself?Madge has a lover, and she has sons, what do the other three women tell them? What about the investigation? This is the first time I have read anything by this author Jo Barney, I have another book by her so will be getting on to enjoy that one too.She seems to write very good topics in a down to earth kind of way that the reader gets involved with without you even realizing it, and the time just flies by reading.I really enjoyed this.

The characters are well-written and painfully real. I loved the women. They were like old friends I’d bumped into for the first time in years. I liked the way the novel is narrated with occasional time shifts revealing each story Madge had included in her final novel, Think on These Things. This worked really well. When the author reveals what has happened to Madge and the true purpose for the women meeting at her seaside house I cried my eyes out. I really wasn’t expecting what is revealed and it felt like I’d been punched in the heart. Her Last Words is the kind of book you fall in love with which stays with you for a long time. I’ll be thinking of these women a month from now and maybe even longer.

It s packed with detail on 50 of the best coaches in the history of the NHL. And it is up to date as of the summer of 2015. Matt DiBiase's research and analysis on each coach makes this book a rare find and a great gift for any hockey fan. I so enjoyed this book that I took it with me on a business trip to Mexico City so I could finish reading it. I will definitely read it again.

Outstanding book on outstanding hockey coaches By LSmith Most sports books that are lists of the best or worst of something usually follow a tried and true format – countdown to the top spot, a brief biography or recap of the team or player and an explanation why the team or player is ranked at that spot.Take that format and throw it out the window when picking up this book on the best coaches in the history of professional hockey. Hockey historian Matthew Dibiase devised a format that takes both positive and negative accomplishments by hockey coaches and ranked the best coaches from 1 to 50, with a few extra “honorable mention” coaches. His methodology is simple in one respect – positive accomplishments such as playoff appearances and Stanley Cup wins are worth one point each while negative accomplishments such as a losing season or missing the playoffs lose one point each. Then a few tweaks to allow for items such as different requirements for these accomplishments through different eras and it makes for one of the best books about any sport for comparing eras.Hockey fans and historians will appreciate the write ups for each coach, especially those about coaches from the early days of the sport like Pete Green, Art Ross, Frank and Lester Patrick and Ralph “Cooney” Weiland. Even if the reader has not heard of some of these coaches from many years ago, he or she will appreciate what that coach has meant to the game and what he accomplished after reading that coach’s passage.Another reason that I believe that this is one of the best books about who is the best at what he does is that Dibiase includes accomplishments in other professional leagues – the Pacific Coast Hockey League and Western Canada Hockey League/Western Hockey League from the early 20th century and the World Hockey Association from the 1970’s. By including a coach’s accomplishments in these leagues as well, Dibiase gives a complete picture of what the coach achieved without shortchanging him because he coached in a different professional league. Finally, the book doesn’t stop at just ranking these coaches. There are chapters describing who was the best coach in each decade, which coaches often came close to making the Stanley Cup finals but never made it, rivalries and separate short chapters on each of the aforementioned other professional leagues. That gives the book even more credibility as a complete comparison of these coaches over the history of professional hockey. The book can be read for pleasure or can be used for reference as well. It is an outstanding record of the best coaches the game has known and should be on the bookshelf of every hockey fan and historian.I wish to thank Mr. Dibiase for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Letting Go and Forgiveness are Difficult By Nancy Clark Townsend “Unconditional” will ring true for anyone who has experienced betrayal by a spouse and somehow survived it. It will be an eye-opener for those who have been fortunate enough not to know such pain. Letting go and forgiveness are both difficult, and Meg Flores’ journey through this maze is not an easy one. In the second installment of Susan McBride's Debutante Dropout mystery series, Dallas heiress Andrea Kendricks must expose a high-society assassin...before she becomes the killer's next target.

Website designer and high-society rebel Andrea Kendricks would never have gotten involved with ego-in-pumps lifestyle hostess Marilee Mabry if it weren't for the underhanded machinations of Andy's upper-crust mama. But thanks to Mother Cissy, Andy's donning designer duds to attend a launch party at the intolerable domestic diva's new Dallas TV studio - and she's on hand to witness the celebration site go up in flames!

Then Andy finds Marilee's daughter, seemingly lifeless. Even though iron-willed Cissy isn't about to let her social calendar be upset by minor inconveniences like arson and possibly murder, her sometime-sleuthing daughter's got a more pressing engagement - namely, hunting down the culprit behind some very foul play.

But there are more than a few nasty messes tucked away in the Mabry closet - and a craven assassin who has the Big D elite quaking in their cowboy boots may soon be burying Andy in hers!

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. an interesting idea not quite accomplished By Ms. Ruth Akien I really love murder mysteries although they do mostly follow the same structure ( sometimes this is nessecary) where by; a murder is commited (stage one) the detective interviews all the suspects/ follows leads (stage two) and (finally)reveals who the murder is, possibly whilst in danger. In a good girl's guide to murder, Susan Mcbride instead starts by indicating who is going to be murdered (stage one) and what movives other people might have to do this (stage two) then (finally) 3/4 of the way through the book she stages the murder. This alternative structure allows Mcbride to show a more rounded charecter regarding the murder victim (including why she is so dissliked yet also the charecter's reasons for being so disslikable in more depth than is usually used).Overall this book has engaging charecters and is easy get into but i did find the actual mystery easy to solve as the clues were not very well hiden and some vital motives were aluded to repeatedly .This book good for someone looking to try something different but not radically different. It is not as suspenceful as works by other mystery writes (i.e. jerrilyn farmer and joanne fluke) but a reasonable addition to the genre.

Andy Kendricks, the "detective" of the series, is thoroughly likeable, not to mention smart, funny, well-grounded in her values, and gutsy. She grew up with Texas wealth and social credentials but shocked everyone by refusing to go through with the expected debut -- hence she is debutante drop-out. Her society mother is trying to marry her off to an eligible man and doesn't like the fact that Andy's boyfriend spends the night (why buy the cow etc.)The plot involves a Martha-Stewart like character -- Marilu -- who alienates everyone -- except Andy's mother Cissy, who is a Marilu's friend (quite possibly her only friend). Marilu's daughter is an emotional mess and Marilu's employees are treated like dirt (but paid very well).Cissy strong-arms her daughter into doing some web design for Marilu (she is the 7th in a series of web-masters). The actual murder in this book doesn't take place for quite a while, but you don't mind because you know that you're being introduced to the characters for a reason and it's all done with such wit and panache (the scene of Andy with the fireman is very funny).I highly recommend this book, and if you haven't read Blue Blood, the first book in the series, you'll probably want to go back and read that too, although you don't have to read them in order.

Debutante dropout saves the day By Sandie Herron Andy Kendricks, the daughter of Dallas socialite Cissy Blevins Kendricks, wants to do anything but dress up and please her mother. As a matter of fact, she skipped her own debutante coming out and went to art school instead. Back in Dallas again, she manages websites, mostly for non-profit organizations. After all, she does have a trust fund.Cissy comes to Andy and begs her to help her dear friend Marilee Mabry, a home guru of the Martha Stewart type, whose show is hitting the TV waves, and she wants the first episode to be shown on a live web cast. She's already been through six webmasters and is desperate along with bossy and conceited and well, let's say hard to work with. Andy doesn't want to do it until her mother bribes her with an Escada dress to die for.Andy arrives early at Marilee's studio/offices to be sure all is set up. As the show gets underway, a cat fight between women erupts setting one woman's hair on fire prompting the sprinklers to go off and the sirens to blare. The lights go out and pandemonium breaks loose. Andy has her wits about her and stumbles back to the office to turn off that live feed so viewers aren't watching the debacle and stumbles across Marilee's daughter Kendall passed out in the bathroom. Andy must figure a way to get help for Kendall in the dark, wet recesses of the office, and pronto.Later we find out that Marilee's personal trainer gave Kendall some herbs. Kendall leaned on Justin as much as her mother did. He actually checks her out of the hospital against medical advice. What agenda does he have with Kendall. Or Marilee? Is he for real, or is he just after Marilee's fortune? You'll have to read this funny, witty, and intriguing mystery to find out for yourself!

Today the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of pro football's most successful and prestigious franchises, but that wasn't always the case. As America was emerging from the turbulent decade of the 1960s the Steelers front office had their sites squarely focused on the future.

Relive the on the field and back room moments that shaped Steelers history and led the Steel City to four Super Bowl victories. The Color of Sundays tells the story of how Bill Nunn Jr., Art Rooney, and the Steelers front office reshaped the franchise. Bill Nunn Jr. s strategy was simple; scout talent where many other teams had failed and bring in players from the historically black colleges and universities.

This period in Steelers history was instrumental in the building of the Steel Curtain defense with future Pro Football Hall of Fame picks such as Charles Edward Mean Joe Greene, L.C. Greenwood and Mel Blount. There were important picks on offensive as well including the future Hall of Famer John Stallworth.

The Color of Sundays: The Secret Strategy that Built the Steelers Dynasty is set in the broader context of the time when a nation for set for change, and the Pittsburgh Steelers were poised to embrace that change.

Reviews:

As a young reporter, I learned a lot of football from Bill Nunn Jr. His story, the Color Of Sundays, is a must-read history lesson on how sports can overcome racism. Bill was ahead of his time in getting great players of color into the NFL. John Clayton ESPN and NFL Sports

It would be hard to put into words what Bill Nunn meant to so many players, coaches, scouts and other members of the Steelers organization. Having known Bill Nunn, Jr. for literally decades, I was blessed that he shared many stories about his remarkable life experience. I am extremely pleased that Andrew Conte has captured some of the stores about Bill Nunn, as well as stories that Bill himself was fond of sharing with others. Art Rooney II, President, Pittsburgh Steelers

The Color of Sundays reveals that sports was not separate from the struggle for equal rights. Nunn was a victim of racism and a triumph for humanity. ... His quiet journalism and eye on society helped to integrate much of professional sports and paved the way for open opportunities for players, coaches, and front office staff. Samuel W. Black, Director of African American Programs/ Senator John Heinz History Center in association with the Smithsonian Institution

What can snowboarding teach us about life? A lot, actually. Life can be unpredictable, bumpy and harsh. Same goes for snowboarding, but it also has the potential for experiencing the highest of highs. In this small but elegantly stated volume, author and rider Nick Appl explores snowboarding as an analogy for all the discoveries, emotions, values and lessons that everyday life can offer. As anyone who rides a snowboard - or yearns to learn - can attest, the act is perfectly suited to teach us about what happiness means and how to find more of it.

While renowned designer Margaux Sullivan was presenting her highly praised collection during New York City's Fashion Week, her husband was cleaning out their bank account. A week after he disappeared, the bank foreclosed on Margaux's apartment and business.

Suddenly broke, betrayed, and humiliated, Margaux has nowhere else to turn to but home: the small coastal town of Crescent Cove, Connecticut, where she once knew love, joy, and family before she put them behind her on the climb to fame. When she's stopped for speeding by local interim police chief Nick Prescott, Margaux barely remembers the "townie" boy who worshipped her from afar every summer. But Nick is all grown up now, a college professor who gave up his career to care for his orphaned nephew, Connor. Though still vulnerable, Margaux is soon rediscovering the beauty of the shore through young Connor's eyes...and, thanks to Nick, finding a forgotten place in her heart that wants to love again.

But as she continues to work on a bold new line that will get her back into the game, Margaux realizes that soon she will have to make the most important, most difficult decision of her life....

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Life by design By Shoobie How does it feel to have your life destroyed in an instant by someone you trusted enough to marry? Margaux Sullivan knows and must try to take back her life as a rising star in the NY fashion world--somehow--but first she has to find someplace to stay. She returns to the summer house she loved so dearly growing up and finds old friends and a welcoming community willing to accept her back with no questions asked. This story isn't just about Margaux, it's about the community of Crescent Cove. While some things have changed when she gets back, some things remain the same...particularly the unrequited love one man has for her that has survived for so long. His life has been complicated too. Instead of being a history professor, Nick Prescott is now the interim police chief and father to his brother's child. So used to fending for himself while taking care of others, he can't seem to reconcile his feelings for the girl he thought long lost. But Beach Colors isn't a love story between a man and a woman, it is more a story of the journey back to life by many people in the small seaside town. The characters are all worthy of their own books and Shelley Noble writes a wonderful tale of lost hope, lost love and coming home where one belongs.

19 of 21 people found the following review helpful. warm contemporary romance By A Customer Designer Margaux Sullivan introduced her line to universal praise at New York City's Fashion Week. However, while she shows off her line, her husband Louis vanishes, but not before emptying all their accounts. Still reeling, Margaux takes another double shot to her gut when the bank forecloses on her Manhattan-based business and her apartment. Humiliated, despondent and feeling like an idiot, Margaux crawls back to her family's summer beach house in Crescent Cove, Connecticut where Police Chief Nick Prescott greets her with a speeding ticket.Nick a townie wanted Margaux when they were growing up but never crossed the great divide between the permanent and the summer. After a stint with the army, he came home to help his mom raise his nephew Connor. He still wants the star of his fantasies, but gave her a ticket anyway because she was thirty miles over the limit. As she enjoys the beach with Nick and Connor, Margaux works on a new line to regain her position at the top of haute couture ladder, but will soon need to decide between New York and Connecticut. This is a warm contemporary romance starring two engaging protagonists and a caring support cast (Manhattan and Connecticut) with one exception; Louis is a pathetic weasel who not only stole their savings, he visits Margaux to demand she give him more money. The enjoyable storyline focuses on love and goals as the heroine must choose between ambition to overcome her shame and her love for Nick and Connor though there is a third option if she wished for it at the grotto.Harriet Klausner

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable beach read hurt by final chapters By C. Quinn This story of a woman struggling to rebuild a life after her husband runs out on her with all of their money made for an enjoyable read for the most part. Margaux and Nick were both interesting characters for most of the book, though at the end I didn't find either of them particularly sympathetic. The book is well-written and the setting delightful. The minor players- Margaux's mom, Nick's landlady- are engaging though I felt more of their story could have been told throughout the narrative. I won't spoil the ending, but I did find the last few chapters frustrating and it altered my view of the book as a whole. A fairly enjoyable summer read, this book ultimately failed to live up to its early promise.

As an alumni of San Pedro High School, it is always amazing when you cross paths with someone else from San Pedro and the first question is; "What year did you graduate from Pedro?" Followed by, Oh, did you know [fill in a name here] This book covers most of the great legends of the 50's, 60's and some of the 70's. Also always glad to be a Pirate.... all 3 of my kids went through SPHS...

‘Thank God, I am a risk-taker. My diary is evidence. I wanted adventure. Perhaps romance. I needed to prove that, at forty, I was not too old to find romance. My instinct told me that the time was right. I went to Turkey in mid-1993 and found both adventure and love. I also predicted that my diary of my year in Turkey would form the basis for a romantic novel. It has done so. In this novel based on my diary, I am Kate, a forty-year-old teacher and loving, single mother of four sons. I have been with my Australian school for twenty years, and now I feel it is time for a break from my responsibilities as a parent. It’s time to welcome new adventures and, hopefully, romance. I jump at an offer to take a year’s leave from my school and teach in Istanbul. My diary shows how I live life to the full. As I write this novel, I can read the sequence of events that led to perhaps the most romantic, challenging, exciting, scary times in my life. And I can be eternally grateful that I did jump in and face life. At the start of my year in Turkey, two handsome, well-educated men became potential romantic interests. And then, unexpectedly, a third man came into my life.’

A Memorable Journey By Flora Morris Brown Who hasn't wanted to break from their routine and enjoy an extended stay in another country, especially with the possibility of romance in the air? Travelling along with Kate when she accepts a one-year teaching assignment in Istanbul was exciting, satisfying and sometimes scary. This well-told story kept me unsure of the ending, caring about the characters, and finally, when it ended, wanting more. Looking forward to more novels from Bradley..

Bookshelf getting cluttered? Save pixels: buy a bundle! Refrigerator 5 is collection of four shorter books by MCM, including: Eviction Notice: A Niko Joe Adventure Mars tenancy. It would be the crappiest job in the universe if it weren't for the fact that you get to fly a ship with kickass kinetic weapons, and use them on people you generally despise. Which, if you've signed up for Mars tenancy, is pretty much everybody. Today, I'm shipping a self-important colonist doof into the far reaches of nowhere, and then blasting Led Zeppelin through the skitter speakers until my ears bleed. It's going to be a good day. I've jinxed it now, haven't I? FML. The Threader in Autumn: A Chrysanthemum Rift Story Jito is a Threader, a powerful magic-wielder who can twist the fates of men in her hands — literally. When her latest contract takes an unexpected turn, she is forced to bide her time in dangerous terrain, fending off furious forest spirits, marauders, and a devilish demon with a nose for trouble. At some point, even boundless power meets its match. The question for Jito is: can she hold out long enough for her comrades to return... and return alive? Risk the Queen: A Lennie Carson Mystery Lennie Carson isn't a sleuth. She's a fashionable young woman from a reputable family, forced into mystery-solving so as to buy herself proper clothes. Her uncle, you see, is a boor. As luck would have it, she's especially good at cracking cases, what with the help of the mysterious Mr Parker, and of course her own healthy dollops of charm and overconfident sass. And whatever information she can't glean from sideways looks and nervous laughs... well, she makes up the rest. It works well enough, most of the time. But when a missing brooch leads to an up-and-coming mobster in the heyday of Prohibition, Lennie's gift for galavanting may not be enough to get her out of trouble... if anything, it'll make things much, much worse... Weapon of Mass Destruction: Open the Door Please For the last 40 years, Jada Bolen hasn't held a spoon, or a fork, or even a piece of string. She's only talked to one man, and only ever during a specific 3-hour window. She cannot dress herself, bathe herself, or defend herself against even the most blatant aggressions. She has not left the confines of her home for forty years... for the good of mankind. All that is about to change. Mankind is trouble. Wait, but why is it called Refrigerator 5? Don't ask silly questions.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and I was very pleased to hear about this release on facebook By Ellie Hall I won't even speculate on why this book is called Refrigerator 5; it’s a collection of bits and maybe that is all the reason anyone needs.I have to confess to being a long time fan of MCM’s writing, and I was very pleased to hear about this release on facebook. It took me a while to get around to downloading a copy, so now I have this, and Refrigerator 6 waiting to be read, and Refrigerator 7 on order. So, what did I get for my money? So far, so good. There is a downside, but I’ll get to that in a little while. There are four episodes in the book, each a single part of a separate story. Pilot episodes, if you like. The author is calling this episodic release Droplet Fiction. He says:“Droplet Fiction gives you a variety of fun, episodic adventures, perfect for Kindle Unlimited readers. Every month, the last four droplets are bundled up in a collection called "Refrigerator", for those who prefer a more conventional reading experience. Look for other Droplet stories on Kindle... one every week!”First droplet is Eviction Notice. (Niko Joe Adventures Book 1)"The worst part about Earthies is... uh... that they exist.Mars tenancy. It would be the crappiest job in the universe if it weren't for the fact that you get to fly a ship with kickass kinetic weapons, and use them on people you generally despise. Which, if you've signed up for Mars tenancy, is pretty much everybody.Today, I'm shipping a self-important colonist doof into the far reaches of nowhere, and then blasting Led Zeppelin through the skitter speakers until my ears bleed. It's going to be a good day.I've jinxed it now, haven't I?FML.Niko Joe lives on a hunk of junk orbiting Mars, and her job consists of threatening, shooting at, or ignoring the colonists who live below her. It's not exactly a boring gig, but when you mix an explosive personality with a load of self-important halfwits, things are bound to get... interesting. Between Goran (her moron of a boss), and Eep (her aggressively empathetic girlfriend), Niko's life is always one wrong comment away from a major eruption of profanity. And wrong comments, they come fast and furious on Mars."Niko Joe is not a particularly likable heroine. She might even be psychotic, but events move so quickly and she has enough humour to make her story enjoyable. She doesn’t like people, and they don’t get much chance to like her in the lucrative, rapid-turnover Martian real-estate rental market. In this first episode, she thinks she has the whole scene clear. She knows who’ll live, who’ll die and who’ll run home to their rich parents, sorry they ever tried to brave the Brave New World. But, of course, she finds a circumstance she had not imagined possible, and it throws her cold hard logic out the air-lock. It’s a fun read in a world that will become even more interesting the more we learn about it.Next is The Threader in Autumn. (Chrysanthemum Rift Saga Book 1)"Every step has a consequence, every movement a tragedy in the making...Jito is a Threader, a powerful magic-wielder who can twist the fates of men in her hands — literally. The Chrysanthemum Rift imagines a fantasy world where the cultures, kingdoms and magic of Japan, China and Korea are all vying for supremacy; where even the greatest warriors bow down to a girl with a spirit on her shoulder; where queens and emperors beg for the favour of bodyguard-monks."This is good solid magical fantasy, and my first choice for reading matter. It is from a series called 'The Chrysanthemum Rift', and other fantasy lovers will do as I did and think of the ‘Riftwar Sagas’. That same essence of fantastic Asian culture is carefully blended into the world where the reader meets the Threader, Jito. There is a bit to take on trust as this story begins. It starts right in the middle of Jito’s ‘contract’, and it takes several pages to start to get a hold on what is happening and to get a feel for the working of the powers at play in this world. There is enough standard fantasy fare here to gain a grip, and then the story whips along so readers experience the world around the characters as it unfolds without any need to pause for detailed explanations. This was, not surprisingly, my favourite of the ‘Droplets’ in this collection. I can’t wait to follow Jito further in this world.Third Droplet is Risk the Queen. (Lennie Carson Mysteries Book 1)"Mobsters can be such drama queens sometimes...Lennie's got her work cut out for her when the case of a missing brooch leads her straight into the underbelly of Chicago mob. Booze, deceit, threats... why, between the thugs and her overbearing Uncle — remarkably similar! — Lennie's got a little too much to handle. Good thing she doesn't have a tendency to fib her way into deeper trouble, just as things are looking their bleakest. Oh wait. She does!"You serve customers here, or just stare at them 'til they leave?"Lennie's on the case.Lennie Carson is a sassy young sleuth in 1925 Chicago, cracking cases with the help of her ethereal partner, Mr Parker. But between the pressures of being a reluctant debutante, and having to work for a living to get out from under her Uncle's thumb, Lennie has to be extra clever to help people in need. That, or fudge some facts along the way."This one is just a whole lot of fun. Lennie is a ditzy flapper – well, she’s not as silly as she seems, and she is spoiled and way overconfident, but she muddles through without messing her fingerwaves. There’s a twist in this one that I did not expect, the ‘ethereal Mr Parker’, and it took me a moment or two to realize what exactly was happening. One of the good things about this style of releasing stories is, it brings you into contact with stories you would otherwise not pick up. That is true of “The Lennie Carson Mysteries”. I’d pass over it no matter who was the author because I just don't usually read mysteries, but I am glad I got to sample it this way. Just fun, with this bright little girl flapping her way into trouble and back out again. My advice is try her for size. Just a complete delight! And lastly, Open the Door Please. (Weapon of Mass Destruction Book 1)"You listen to her, now. Do as she says. Remember your vow..."For the last 40 years, Jada Bolen hasn't held a spoon, or a fork, or even a piece of string. She's only talked to one man, and only ever during a specific 3-hour window. She cannot dress herself, bathe herself, or defend herself against even the most blatant aggressions. She has not left the confines of her home for forty years... for the good of mankind. All that is about to change.Mankind is trouble.Weapon of Mass Destruction is a series about what happens when you make a deal with the devil... and get forced to ask for an amendment."This one is the downside I mentioned earlier. Reality at the moment is overfull of political intrigue and secret organizations, and if I hadn’t been intending to review, I might not have read fiction along the same lines. That said, it is a gripping read. And if you love a complex political thriller, it’s just the thing for you.I did not understand what was going on at first. There is a ‘begin in the middle, flashback, middle, flashback, get to the end’ timeline happening and I was confused for a while, but kept going, trusting it was all going to make sense eventually. And it did. I don’t want to labour the point, but the writing carries the reader into and through these stories so fast, there is no time to worry too much about how it fits together. It’s just turn the page, turn the page, turn the page. Wonderful stuff. If you want to read only one stream of the stories, just stick to that kindle ‘droplet’ each week and enjoy. I’m too old for that much weekly dripping, so I’m happy to stay with the Refrigerators as they come out. My advice – Enjoy. So, all up, and admittedly as a fan of MCM’s writing, I give this a delighted 5 stars.
