By M.A. Stanley Her Last Words (previously published under the title Uprush) is a story about life, friendship and death. Four college friends get together annually to share their lives, they’ve been friends for forty years, through marriages, divorces, children, jobs and new lovers and through all the challenges and changes of life, they stand together. When they gather this time, they’re surprised and taken off guard at what transpires. One of them has a debilitating disease that will rob her of her mind and body, and she doesn’t want to stick around for it. Instead, she writes the story of her life, and she writes the stories of her dearest friends’ lives and ask that they finish their individual stories, but she also tells them how hers will end. This is an emotional tale that delves deep into the lives of these women, their failures and successes and everything in between. I really enjoyed it (even though it’s not my typical read) and would highly recommend it.Although this is a fantastic novel, I did find the editing/proofreading errors a bit distracting, however once the author addresses those, it’s a 5 star novel all the way! This book was provided to me for free for an honest and unbiased review (see all our reviews at http://www.bookexplosions.com/ or on Goodreads at https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/131875-book-explosions )

How would you end your life in the last chapter of your book By read-along-with-sue This story is about four women. The author divided up the chapters for each woman, which I found a good way of interacting and getting to know each woman in turn. We feel their emotions, we get to see inside, not only they're lives but their soul.Madge, Joan, Jackie and Lou met in college. Madge kept in touch with each of them even though they went their separate ways in life. They met up occasionally. Each one had to finish their own life story.Madge wants to finish hers by suicide and to do this she needs help from her friends. She wants her suicide to look like an accident. You can imagine how they others react to this. The next thing, Madge is missing. They fear for her. They report this to the Police however, she has to be missing for at least 24 hours before they take action. There are a whole lot of questions that need answers, as we learn that each woman is harboring a secret.Did Madge succeed in killing herself?Madge has a lover, and she has sons, what do the other three women tell them? What about the investigation? This is the first time I have read anything by this author Jo Barney, I have another book by her so will be getting on to enjoy that one too.She seems to write very good topics in a down to earth kind of way that the reader gets involved with without you even realizing it, and the time just flies by reading.I really enjoyed this.

The characters are well-written and painfully real. I loved the women. They were like old friends I’d bumped into for the first time in years. I liked the way the novel is narrated with occasional time shifts revealing each story Madge had included in her final novel, Think on These Things. This worked really well. When the author reveals what has happened to Madge and the true purpose for the women meeting at her seaside house I cried my eyes out. I really wasn’t expecting what is revealed and it felt like I’d been punched in the heart. Her Last Words is the kind of book you fall in love with which stays with you for a long time. I’ll be thinking of these women a month from now and maybe even longer.
