It took a while to get the characters into my head again as I hadn't read a book of hers in several months. I do love her descriptions of the English countryside though.

“Simultaneously engaging, heart wrenching and all consuming!”

Jackie Moretti always believed in fairy tale endings. But what happens when the fairy tale ends and real life begins? Coming of age in the early 1970s… she’s caught between the world of Ozzie and Harriet and the Age of Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll. When her world abruptly cracks in two, Jackie is forced to deal with the consequences of soul-shattering deception if she’s ever to find love again.

Sexy, motorcycle riding mechanic, Michael Nowak recognizes Jackie’s vulnerability from their first encounter grabbing her attention and not letting go. The small-time drug dealer provides both intoxicating sex and drugs to distract her from her crumbling life. As their feelings grow from lust to love, Michael gets roped into a larger scale criminal operation than he ever thought possible.

Can they save each other and overcome the struggles of the heart or will their world consume them?

Love’s Illusions is the first installment in a series of women’s modern historical fiction novels. If you love compelling, realistic characters and an immersive plot, then you’ll love Jolene Cazzola’s debut novel.

About the Author I’m a first time author, but long term creative. After earning my MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I spent most of my career working in social services, while dabbling in the arts on the side. During that time, I found myself in a place where I needed to know something about accounting – before long, one accounting course turned into an MBA and I was headed down a new road. My life has not been planned. All the roads I’ve taken have zig-zagged between the creative and the analytical realities that surrounded me. No matter what happened, though, there has always been one constant – without fail, I found myself recreating reality in my mind, or in other words – making things up the way I wish they had been. As people or situations entered or exited from my realm, the stories I ran over and over in my mind became more detailed and real to me. But never once did I give a single thought to putting any of them down on paper. I didn’t write; I created with glass, metal, fiber, paper, anything that caught my fancy, except words. Then one day something changed, a familiar pattern emerged, but this time, words were my medium of choice. Before I knew it, the beginnings of Love’s Illusions were forming on my computer. The more I typed – the more I enjoyed it. The pieces of my story were taking form as surely as if they were a piece of sculpture. I love this incarnation! I hope you will too. Book 2 in the Love’s Illusions series is currently underway. Join me as I explore what ‘should have happened next’. Jackie’s story will help you to better understand your mother or grandmother By a grateful reader This is a story made most compelling by its honesty. Jackie develops of heavy dose of self-knowledge as her story unfolds and she is not afraid to share it. That makes her completely believable and it's her truthfulness that draws us in. If you came of age in the 60’s and 70’s as Jackie did, you’ll recognize the widespread social tensions that challenged our culture and our families as changing attitudes about the role of women, sexuality, drugs, and politics caused the world to shift beneath our feet. If you did not, Jackie’s story will help you to better understand your mother or grandmother, or maybe just a bit more about those turbulent years in American culture. This is a strong first novel by a talented writer. I look forward to where Jackie goes next.

By Cecelia Zucconi It can be difficult reading a story where the main character is clinically depressed; however, for anyone who has ever been depressed, the writer does a superb job illustrating it. I though the story was great and you could really get a good sense of what was going on in Jackie's head. Unlike a lot of romance novels that I read, the characters weren't completely one-dimensional, so that was very refreshing! I also like that the main character, Jackie wasn't perfect. So often in stories, writers try to make the main character perfect with only a minor flaw that she thinks is a big deal but no one else does. I loved that Jackie had real problems; it made her feel like she could actually be a real person. Being a millennial, it was interesting reading a story that takes place in the early 70s. There were a lot of terms and drugs, I must confess, I had to google.I overall liked the character Jackie, but she often says that she's a feminist, and then constantly blames herself for the mistakes of the men in her life and depends on men to make her happy/functioning; that got a bit frustrating after a while, but you could see how her childhood caused her to be bad at communicating and a bit backwards in thinking.Overall very interesting and enjoyable read! I'd recommend it!

The day she returns from her mother's funeral, Georgina discovers her husband Colin's affair. A remote Englishman, he is unsympathetic to the fact that Georgina’s world has been capsized by the death of both her parents and her daughter, Kate’s, suicidal depression. Already down on her hands and knees, fighting for her child’s life, Colin’s affair lands Georgina face down in the mud. As Kate grows sicker and nothing helps, Georgina descends into a nightmare world where all her assumptions about reality are exploded as she turns for help to an intuitive in Minnesota, a Peruvian archangel channel, an Irish mystic and her own dreams. Georgina is mystical, Kate is practical. Where Georgina rushes in guided by intuition, Kate thinks things through, observing and sensing their pulse. Only love for her mother keeps Kate from taking her own life, when all she wants, is to beg for death, to end the unbearable pain. Four women support them on their journey. It is articulate hardboiled Emma, an obituary writer for The Times, who perpetually goads Georgina in the role of side kick and commentator. The wisdom of the crone is offered by Georgina's 80 year old friend Selma. Selma is the daughter of a black share cropper raised in the South before the Civil Rights Act. When Georgina says "If Kate dies, I will die. Did you know love can kill?" Selma tells her "pull up your socks girl, you got to pull up your socks and help your child.” And it is Carrie, the etherial horse therapist, who, when fear grips Georgina by the throat, stealing her voice, reminds her, "worrying is like praying for what you don't want.” And then, there is Julia, Georgina's younger sister. It is Julia who has always sweetened Georgina's life. But it is Julia, and not Kate, who will be sacrificed to death before the story ends. As the book moves forward into the present, six years after Kate’s confrontation with death, she is married to Finn and living in Okinawa, Japan, working as a graphic novelist. Finn is in Air Force special forces. Kate also has a friend, Lydia, who like Kate, is a military wife. But unlike Kate, Lydia, has never been able to be authentic even with herself. There are four men in the book. Cyrus is Kate's father and Georgina's exotic, handsome, Persian ex-husband. Colin is Georgina's most recent husband and the villain in the group. He's self-centered and disloyal, but unfortunately also smart, funny and sexy. He doesn't even pretend support as he burns the house down and poisons the well. Matthew is a nuclear physicist and Georgina's final love. He arrives in the twilight hour of her life and carries her home to herself. Kate's husband, Finn, is all American, full of testosterone, good will and tenderness, and he looks like James Dean. After her near death, it is Finn who calls Kate's Soul back into being. As the characters hurdle along through the story bumping up against one another, each has flashes of insight, but it is only Georgina and Kate who experience the full catastrophe of the human condition and see the blinding beauty in it. Their journey into suffering and their acceptance of it, becomes a thousand allumettes which light up the inner landscape of their lives, altering them forever.

The Path Has Heart By David Buskin Disclosure #1: The author is a friend.Disclosure #2: I approached this book with a certain degree of trepidation. When you read the work of a friend, you very much want it to be good, or at least good enough that you don’t have to lie through your teeth when you praise it to them. Plus, in this case, I feared it might possibly be a tough read, because Dr. Plunket and I experience the world in very different ways. I prepared myself for a slog through impenetrable (to me) forests of Jungian psychology with assorted mythic apps like healing-at-a-distance, past and future lives, wise and powerful animals, trees with souls, the whole gamut. The author is a highly respected, much-sought-after therapist, with a bottomless empathy gene, but it’s not too much of a stretch to say she’s never met a crystal she doesn’t like.However.If being a proficient novelist turns in large part on creating breathing, compelling characters, putting them into challenging high-stakes situations and making their inner process manifest so that we take the journey with them and care very much about what happens to them, Susan Plunket, in her first venture into fiction, demonstrates a veteran's mastery of the genre. What I feared might be over-the-top philosophizing has instead been alchemically transformed into finely wrought - fascinating - aspects of character. The ideas live because the people to whom they matter do also. This is nowhere more evident than in the protagonists’ battles with suffering and despair, betrayal and loss, as they struggle to go from shadow into light. Life has nasty surprises waiting for all of us, and the way we deal with them - more than anything else, I think - defines who we are. And the way they are dealt with in When Every Breath Becomes a Prayer made the book, for this reader, impossible to put down. I hope the author will write more fiction; true, it might take some time away from her profession of healing, but psychology’s loss will be literature’s gain.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Plunket has a great way of drawing the reader into the story line By Amazon Customer I didn't want to put this book down. Ms. Plunket has a great way of drawing the reader into the story line. I felt as though I was right there with the characters. For me this book is a wonderful testament to the power of love and faith and how our beliefs can help us along our path.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fasten your seatbelt ... By Georgia James Susan Plunket's book is a poetic roller coaster, a wholly original ride you almost believe was actually devised by some other-worldly intelligence - assuming that intelligence was not only wise but also kind. And with a wicked sense of humor. Plus a killer instinct for zeroing in on the essence of human character. Is love even possible when we are all so fragile and flawed? How can one bear heartbreak upon heartbreak and still maintain our sanity? Are we mere fumbling mortals, destined to be defeated by the dark powers that betray us? Is hope too flimsy a garment to wear onto the battlefield of life - or is it really woven of steely stuff, something akin to courage? The intertwined stories of mother Georgina in New York and daughter Kate in Okinowa unfurl with such delicious, almost easy grace that you want to savor each chapter. Sometimes you may need to stop and let the dust settle in your brain after a particularly harrowing passage. (Dr. Plunket knows the landscape of the suffering human heart better than most; you'll be glad to have such an experienced guide when the story ventures into the depths of despair - and back out again, thank the gods!) In the end, I hope you will feel as I did: enlightened, entertained and even comforted by the book's heart and wisdom - and with a renewed appetite for the fray of life. Loved. This. Book.

Valley This was a mostly enjoyable story, but had a hero who needed to be kicked to the curb--after he was kicked on the shins a few times. I know I'm overly fond of shin kicks, but sometimes you just keep running into people who need their shins kicked. It's not my fault, really. So, this is a heroine who comes from an abusive, alcoholic and drug abusing mother who makes her living getting pregnant and blackmailing her wealthy and married lovers to keep their wives from finding out they've been straying. The heroine has managed to extract herself from this toxic environment and make something of herself by opening and running an upscale boutique and continues to keep an eye on her younger half-sister who is still with their shared mother. She fell in love and moved in with the man (our hero) who put up the money for her start up and remains a silent partner in her business. Opposed to their relationship is the hero's mentor who seems to hate the heroine and is not shy about letting her know she is not worthy of the hero's attentions whenever he is not around. The plot thickens here. When the sister calls the heroine for help, she is forced to step between her sister and her mother who likes to make her points to her daughters by slapping them around. Both escape the mother with some bruises and the heroine brings her sister to the penthouse she shares with the hero while she sorts out the sister's problems. However the younger sister is pregnant, a fact the heroine confirms with a test and both the mother and the baby's father want her sister to terminate the pregnancy, neither care what the sister wants. The heroine waits for the man she loves to come home so she can consult with him and get his opinion on how best to protect her sister's future. Boy, does she get a surprise. The hero finds the pregnancy test first and draws some ugly conclusions. He confronts the heroine and accuses her of trying to trap him, just as his mentor said she would, and lets her know in gutter terms what he thinks of her, that he is aware of her family situation--courtesy of his mentor, that he will remove the child from such a grasping and unworthy mother and then slams out. The stunned heroine does what any self-respecting woman would do, she leaves. The hero returns the next day to apologize, but it's too late--she's gone and she intends to stay gone. He spends a year trying to get her back and explain, that he really didn't mean it when he was telling her what a no account, low life, scum of the earth wh@re (ammy restriction) she was. It seems some people just take these kinds of things so personally. That is where the book begins. The hero is stalking the heroine in a very genteel, upper class way trying to get her to relent; she is avoiding him whenever possible and has relocated her sister from New York to Texas to keep her out of their mother's orbit and is considering moving there herself; and, oh yeah, the hero's mentor still hates her--really REALLY hates her. At least now she knows why, he is her father and has been blackmailed since the heroine's birth by mommy to finance her habit. Her mother thinks it's a fine joke. The sister is killed by a drunk driver, leaving the heroine bereft and the custodian of a young baby. Hero steps into the breach to try and win some forgiveness points. The mentor throws a spanner into the works by withholding further money from mommy unless the heroine stops seeing the hero, so mommy decides she may as well try for custody of the baby for what she can get from her daughter. Hero makes his move by telling the heroine they must marry in order to stave off the custody bid. Daddy/mentor blows and hero catches him beating the heroine and has to rescue her. Lots of excitement, but it falls apart a little here.At the hospital, where a bruised and traumatized heroine needs some support the hero...yells at her for not telling him the mentor was his father and leaves her there, alone. He hires bodyguards and insists heroine and baby move back into his penthouse but otherwise ignores the heroine, then he leaves when they get there. When the heroine tries to call him, he tells her not to bother him and hangs up. After a week of this, the heroine finds her spine again and leaves for Texas. At this point, the "child becomes seriously ill and has to be rushed to the hospital to allow the hero to reinsert himself without having the heroine flatten his head with a skillet" plot device is rolled out. While the heroine is with her niece, prior to the hero's tardy arrival, she learns that her mother is dead of an overdose. Another blow for her to absorb, but it has a silver lining. She takes this as a sign that she no longer needs to marry the hero and gives him back his ring when he finally makes an appearance. Since she was in a hospital with witnesses and there was no skillet handy, it's probably the best she could do under the circumstances. If it were me, I'd probably start toting around a larger bag so I could have that skillet handy cuz she's going to need it since this hero seems to react to crises by yelling at the heroine and running away for a while. The rest of the tale consists of the hero convincing the heroine he loves her and insisting, "he never meant to be away so long she thought he was never coming back." Really?!?Don't get me wrong, it was a very interesting book and I enjoyed it (although I really wanted this guy's shins kicked), but I thought the ending was weak. The heroine had been strong in not taking the hero's...solid waste product (another ammy concession) for the first offense, but let him talk her around after the second, and in my opinion, worse offense. Maybe she was getting tired, maybe she was still shell shocked from everything, but he needed to work harder to regain his ground. That's why it's not a five star. For those who are sensitive to sexual situations, yes there is some sex. There is not a lot of sex and it's relatively mild, but it's there. The text is almost entirely free of typos, a big thank you for that and there was angst coming out all the character's ears for those who are looking for it. With a stronger ending, it would have been better, but it was still a very decent read. If only the hero had received some kicks...maybe next time.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. on the fence By Ana RC This was a tough book to like. On one hand I loved how he pursued her and tried to get her forgiveness. But just as things get better another problems comes up and he act like a total jerk. My gosh she was attacked and injured and he is mad at her. I love happy endings but part of me wanted her to dump him. The book did keep my interest but the love interest didn't.

The writing is quite choppy at times. Second, the heroine runs hot and cold towards the hero, and he is the same towards her. One minute they're panting after each other; the next, they're throwing distrust left and right. Third, the baby seems to be the big draw at making them a couple--"instalove" once he meets her. SPOILER+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Why then, does the hero abandon her and the baby for a week at a time whenever something upsets him? He does this even after the h has been attacked by someone close to both of them. The baby has just lost her mother. Wouldn't he realize that security is especially important? Stick around for crying out loud! Why 2 1/3 Stars? Weird rating, I know, but I finished it even though I wanted to hurl it across the room several times. I would even be wiling to read it again if it undergoes editing.

Like them, Potholm has an ear for By John Christie With this delightful book, Chris Potholm joins the distinguished pantheon of Maine yarn-spinners that includes such luminaries as Holman Day and John Gould.Like them, Potholm has an ear for, and a sensitivity to, the unique Maine vernacular; the sometimes mystifying sense of humor; and the always apparent love and respect we Mainers have for our friends and neighbors who, in the words of fellow Mainer and poet, Robert P. T. Coffin, are “our kindred and our kind...whose bodies always lean towards the blow.”Potholm spins tales that not only ring true to folks like me who've spent a lifetime listening to and attempting to share the stories that are told around campfires, in duck blinds and over the hoods of pickup trucks at the dump (aka transfer station), but folks “from away” will get a real taste of Maine life as they immerse themselves in his stories, as I enjoyably did for hours on end.Lots of writers have come close to, but missed the mark, attempting to tell Maine stories in an authentic manner. They generally resort to characterizing us with the typical Maine stereotype that we natives find not only well off the mark, but demeaning and offensive. Not Potholm. His new book hits it over the Green Monster. If you think you know Maine, you'll learn when you read this captivating collection of stories from this unique corner of the country that there's a whole world just below the surface that the occasional visitor never sees and that captures the real condition of the, again Coffin, “cheerful, crystal people” who populate this corner of the world.

It's use of colloquial expressions and vivid descriptions lets the reader feel the scenery and the action. Although I've never hunted and I'm female, I could still get into these tales about the wilderness, hunting and fishing. I did learn a few things about hunting and fishing in Maine. I also learned some of the terms they use. This could be helpful one day. At the end of the book, the author states he was several other tales to tell. I'm looking forward to his next book. In the meantime, I will reread some of these tales several times, because they do make me laugh outloud. I would recommend this book for anyone, who wants to read stories about Maine guides, hunting in Maine, fishing in Maine, and what life is really like in the backwoods.

If you want a fresh, funny and straight-shooting account of the lives and lingo of the special breed of outdoorsmen who become Maine guides, this is the book for you. Mr. Potholm, once a Maine guide himself, unveils a candid and hilarious portrait of Big Gus and Snap, two quick-witted pathfinders of Mother Nature and their encounters with all kinds of various species, not only grouse, moose and striped bass but an assortment of well-to-do "sports" from "away" (ie; New York and Boston) who hire them. It is a singular sub-culture and Potholm captures its characters and idiosyncracies with skill and true Down east humor.

As long as football is played, Joe Montana will be synonymous with the heart-pounding rally. Seemingly impervious to the pressure of a scoreboard deficit, the quarterback known as Joe Cool brought a steadying calm to every huddle, especially when the situation seemed especially dire. His reputation for miracles began to take root at the University of Notre Dame. In the 1979 Cotton Bowl, he overcame the flu, hypothermia and a 22-point deficit to lead the Fighting Irish to a stunning victory over Houston. This narrative continued in the NFL, as he engineered 31 fourth-quarter comebacks, including victories known in professional football lore as The Catch and The Drive, forever casting his career in a heroic glow.

In MONTANA, acclaimed author Keith Dunnavant sketches the definitive portrait of a man who repeatedly defied the odds, on and off the field.

While leading the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl championships over a nine-year period, establishing a new standard for passing efficiency, and twice earning the league's Most Valuable Player award, Montana became the signature quarterback of the 1980s and one of the greatest ever to play the game. Overcoming his own limitations, which caused him to be underrated coming out of Notre Dame, he quickly mastered Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense, and thereby, helped reinvent offensive football.

But it was rarely easy. Like the rallies he so often produced, his life was filled with the sort of tension that made his journey seem routinely dramatic: The father who pushed him. The high school coach who challenged his commitment. The college coach who very nearly squandered him. The back surgery that almost ended his career. The younger athlete who tried to take his job.

Rich an anecdotal detail, insight and context, MONTANA is a powerful story about a man who was defined by his intense competitiveness, and how this intangibly helped him become one of the ionic figures in football history.

Montana: The Biography of Football's Joe Cool, by Keith Dunnavant

Review

"Dunnavant builds his portrait through research and dozens of personal interviews with those who have known Montana. Fans will remember Montana’s triumphs in the NFL, but this thoroughly engaging volume also tells the lessfamiliar story of Montana’s early career and his battles with his high-school and college coaches, both of whom were slow to recognize Montana’s talent. That changed in San Francisco, where Montana and coach Bill Walsh were the perfect match. That special relationship is portrayed skillfully in this carefully researched and fluidly written biography. Sure to be of interest in any sports collection." ―Booklist

“The story of Joe Montana has been always been captured in moments frozen in time from "The Catch" to the laser to John Taylor to win Super Bowl XXIII. Because these memories have so long endured, we feel like we know Joe Montana. It turns out we don't. Until now. In "Montana" Keith Dunnavant paints a multi-dimensional picture of a man who is so much more than "Joe Cool." Through thorough research and extensive interviews, Dunnavant unlocks the real reason why the underrated kid from Pennsylvania became his generation's best quarterback and a cultural icon. The reason might surprise you.” ―Tony Barnhart, SEC Network

“America's Quarterback is a well-researched, deeply personal account of a college and NFL icon. Luckily for us Keith Dunnavant chose Bart Starr as a subject. This is a fascinating read.” ―Dennis Dodd, CBSSports.com on America's Quarterback

“Dunnavant has done it again. I was mesmerized by Montana. I don't know what was more enjoyable---watching Montana play quarterback or reading Dunnavant's stunning account of his life and times. A truly memorable and magnificent book. A riveting read.” ―Paul Finebaum, ESPN radio host

“Dunnavant does a great job... revealing the truly impeccable character of Starr and that of his wife, Cherry.... This is an important book about one of the NFL's most important players ever.” ―Bookgasm.com on America's Quarterback

"MONTANA is one of the best sports books I've ever read. When Keith Dunnavant tackles a project, he nails it to the wall. You will love this definitive account of Joe Montana's life."―Pat Williams, senior Vice President, Orlando Magic and author of Extreme Winning

“Tastefully written and complimenting the true spirit of Joe Montana. A winner and always a champion.” ―Former teammate and believer in the magic of Joe Montana, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger

“Joe Montana imagined greatness and made it happen when it mattered most. In his richly detailed biography, Keith Dunnavant shows how football's best quarterback turned science into art and changed the game forever.” ―Dave Kindred, author of Sound and Fury

“Keith Dunnavant is one of the most gifted writers and researchers in American book-writing. He brings depth and clarity to Bart Starr the same way he did with Bear Bryant in Coach. I love this book and will proudly display it next to Coach Bryant.'” ―Jim Dent, author of Courage Beyond The Game on America's Quarterback

“This superbly crafted profile not only explores the heart and soul of one of the game's greatest players, but Keith Dunnavant's "Montana" provides locker room access to some of football's most memorable moments and takes the reader on a journey through a golden era of the NFL.” ―Blair Kerkhoff of The Kansas City Star

“An insightful, engaging biography about the best quarterback of modern times.” ―Tim Wendel, author of Summer of ’68

"The first serious biography of the quiet legend...well written and researched, this title will be of interest to a wide range of sports fans." - Library Journal

About the Author Keith Dunnavant is the author of several books, including The Missing Ring and definitive biographies of football icons Paul "Bear" Bryant and Bart Starr. In fact, it is a long time ago, and well beyond the memory of many pro football fans. While acclaimed sports author Keith Dunnavant’s new work, Montana: The Biography of Joe Cool is a terrific look at perhaps the greatest of all quarterbacks, not merely giving us the nuts and bolts of a great career and four Super Bowl rings, what separates it is his telling exactly why and how Montana was great.Dunnavant is like a great baseball manager – think Tony LaRussa or Joe Torre – who presides over a team filled with superstars. But as those in the know . . . know, even if you pencil in names like Rickey Henderson or Derek Jeter, you can still screw things up. Just ask Butch van Breda Kolf, who managed to lose with a Lakers team featuring Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain, all in their primes. In Dunnavant’s case, he has written of superstars: Bear Bryant, Bart Starr, now Joe Montana. He has not screwed it up.The highlight of Montana is the author’s description of the 1981 season, and in this he has done what great writers do; he has taken us there. We can smell the eucalyptus trees at Golden Gate Park and the stale beer at good ol’ Candlestick. We can hear the cheers and the background noise.Dunnavant spent some time on the West Coast in the 1980s, but he is a Southern man who specializes in Alabama grid heroics, yet he well describes just what made western Pennsylvania football tick before the coal mines closed; what fall Saturdays were like in South Bend when the Fighting Irish were still the best of the best; and of course how a frail kid dealt with pressures, coaches, and competitors on his way from Pennsylvania to Notre Dame and onto the 1981 49ers, a team with no history of success, coached by an unknown practically drubbed out of the game by Paul Brown, playing in a stadium described by writer Roger Angell as a “festive prison yard.”It was the fall of ’81, Ronald Reagan’s first year in office. It seems almost black-and-white in the mind’s eye, but Dunnavant colorizes it. First, he tells us about lazy Sunday afternoons at Big Rec Park, where semi-pro baseball teams played on weekends. It is practically a Chicago song; the fields awash in sunshine, a kind of Shangri-la of greenery rising out of the morning fog. Then, the sound of street vendors and ice tream trucks, eventually drowned out by the voice of Don Klein, venerable play-by-play man of the 49ers, heard on transistor radios, describing touchdown passes by Montana amid cheers from the park faithful. Previously oblivious to the ‘Niners, now these people were, week-by-week dedicated pro football fanatics.Dunnavant takes his time painting this picture, like a good film director willing to invest in character development. Before he gets to the Catch, the Genius and the Super Bowl, he tells of a Rolling Stone concert that October held at the ‘Stick, with Mick Jagger practically making love to a young lovely on stage. He gives us background music for the Bay Area, which was distinctly Journey and Huey Lewis replacing the old Sausalito acid rock. He gives us the socio-politics of sports, the 49ers transforming a city from a dirty, corrupt Dirty Harry laughing stock, perpetually dominated by Hollywood, the Rams, the Dodgers, the Trojans, and the Bruins; suddenly courtesy of Joe Montana and the 49ers, they are a city on the move: Silicon valley, political power shifting to the north post-Reagan, amidst sports dominance. Then, as torrential rains abated, giving way to sunshine as the 49ers defeated Dallas and Cincinnati in January of 1982 to give the City its first ultimate title in any sport, he takes us to Union Street, the “triangle” where pretty girls adorn happening bars and San Francisco celebrated. For those who experienced it, the city of San Francisco had never looked like that before, and it was changed forever. The rest of Montana is solid. It particularly delves into Montana’s testy relationships with coaches, which was always fraught with tension from high school to Notre Dame, even with Walsh. Who was responsible for all this success, Walsh the Genius or Montana the superstar? Then there is Montana’s rivalry with Steve Young, the big, tall, Christian stud who finally “elbowed” him out of a job.It is all here, it is colorful, and a must-read.Steven Travers is a USC graduate who saw Joe Montana play for Notre Dame vs. the Trojans, and numerous times with the 49ers. An ex-pro baseball player, he has authored 30 books including The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly San Francisco 49ers; Remembering the ‘Stick; and Heroes of the ‘Stick. He can be reached via Twitter @STWRITES or at USCSTEVE1@aol.com.

Great Book about a Remarkable Player By citadelpride As someone who has followed the NFL for more than 50 years, I believe Keith Dunnavant has done an excellent job in painting a very definitive picture of one of the all-time great quarterbacks. When Joe Montana was playing, I was busy following various athletes in several sports. I'm not sure I understood how great Montana was, until I read MONTANA. This book put it all together for me, allowing me to realize what a magnificent career he truly had. Montana's playing career evolved like a slow-moving tornado. There were plenty of times when it might have ended, but he kept battling. A lot of athletes quit too early but Montana got the maximum amount out of his talent, and MONTANA does a great job of sketching his personal drama against the backdrop of a very interesting time in pro football. Read it. You will love it.

Exceptional By Kim Distel I very much enjoyed this book and found that in offering so much (history, clearly explained; excitement; lessons in determination and patience; insight into the character of certain regions of the country), the book has an appeal that reaches not only fans of Joe Montana and football in general, but also a broader audience. The book is beautifully crafted and structured—exceptional in the careful selection and placement of detail and in the clever use of language, and very effectively paced. A true pleasure to read.

The surreal, gripping saga of a young, desperate, rich Negro mother and her children, and her courageous teenage daughter in the south in the 1950s is inspired by real life events. Maebelle Hawkins, a young, pretty, divorcee, moves to Derriene Crossing with her heart set on finding the perfect husband. When Rufus Poygoode, a well-to-do, good-looking farmer enraptures her heart with a proposal of marriage, she feels her life has come full circle. But it is a marriage awash in deception. A few weeks after their union, her fantasy world crashes and burns. She shivers when Rufus Poygoode places the cold black metal gun against her nose and calls her Olga Berry, the name of his surrogate mother, for whom he carries a vendetta. No amount of defense convinces him she is not the estranged daughter of his surrogate mother. Crushed by cruel and unusual hatred, Maebelle Hawkins resigns herself to a mere state of simply existing. Then their daughter Tara Poygoode grows up. Tara Poygoode is pleased that she has her mother and father’s good looks. But she hates him for the humiliation, cruelty, and power he wields over her large family. When she learns that her father won’t allow her to attend college, that he is intent on tying her life to the land forever, she vows to take control over her destiny, and rescue her family

By Ratmammy IN HER PRESENCE: A HUSBAND'S DIRTY SECRET by Nancy WeaverMay 6, 2005This is the story of several generations of sexually and emotionally abused people, all under the hands of one man, Rufus Poygoode. He was raised by an aunt who sexually abused him as a boy, and it is no surprise that it is continued down to the next generation. While the focus of the book is on this man who has no qualms about the pain and suffering that he hands down to his children and grandchildren, it is also on the persons that are abused. The story starts with the introduction of Rufus and Maebelle Hawkin's. She happens to be an opportunistic type of woman, not having any scruples about stealing men from her friends or sisters. In this case, Rufus is married, and when he decides he wants to make Maebelle his own, he convinces her that he and his wife are working on the divorce, which is not true at all. Through lies and deception, he gets her in his bed and she becomes his common-law wife. What he does to her and her daughters is beyond words. Nancy Weaver tells the tale of an abusive man and those that live under his roof. The first half of the book details how Maebelle ends up with Rufus, and she's not quite the victim in the beginning, as she helps get rid of his wife Charlotte, who lives in fear of her life and is glad to be rid of him. When Maebelle's daughters tell their mother of the sexual abuse they are receiving at their stepfather's hands, Maebelle doesn't do a thing. At times she even thinks her daughters are jealous of her, and are trying to steal him from her.Rufus' plans for Maebelle and her daughters were downright evil. I won't go into detail here as it may be a bit too much of a spoiler. But he is definitely not one that cares how others feel, and is always out for himself. While Weaver's story had good intentions, I found this book a tad over done, with most of the characters merely caricatures of black people. The time frame was the 1950s, but the author was inconsistent at times (she starts the book out in the late 1950's, but further into the story, it is only 1950. It could have been a typo, or she merely got her time frames wrong). The book also needed a lot of editing, with quotation marks in the wrong places and too many commas in other instances. While the story itself had a message, I think the plot could have been edited down a lot, with corrections made to facts that were inconsistent. The topic of abuse is a heavy duty one and the author wanted to write a story about how people in hardships overcome and eventually will rise above, but the book needed a lot of work. The author has potential and I hope that with her second novel she will grow into an even stronger writer.

You know the old saying "You think you got it bad, but there's bound to be someone worst off than you". That's exactly the situation found within the pages of IN HER PRESENCE by Nancy Weaver. We meet a family that's bound together by control, manipulation and abuse. You think you have it bad? You have no idea.Maebelle Hawkins is a divorced mother of six children. She is still young, very pretty but barely making ends meet. After her divorce, she moves to Derriene Crossing in hopes of finding the perfect husband. Her first marriage didn't work out, but she still believes her ideal man is out there. She meets Rufus Poygoode, a very rich and good looking farmer. They date briefly and he proposes marriage to her. She graciously accepts and believes her life and her children's life will make a turn for the better. It will make a turn, but nothing like she expects.Rufus Poygoode is a very rich man with a deep dark secret. He was raised by his surrogate mother, Olga Berry. What Olga did to him while growing up, you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Rufus believes that Maebelle is Olga's estranged daughter and is set on paying back his vendetta on Olga with Maebelle and her children.Maebelle realizes her dreams are nowhere near coming true the day Rufus holds a gun to her head and calls her Olga Berry. She tries to convince him she has no idea who Olga Berry is, let alone related to her. But nothing she says convinces Rufus that she doesn't know Olga and from that point on she is treated with cruel and unusual punishment. Her children suffer along with Maebelle and they grow up resenting her. What is Rufus' dirty secret? Can Maebelle escape the cruel abuse and save herself and her children?Set in the 1950's and inspired by real events, IN HER PRESENCE will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. You will be angry and sad while witnessing the abuse Maebelle and her children endure. My heart went out to the Poygoode family and being the person I am I wanted to help them. I wanted to find a way for them to escape. Can't think of a family that has it worse off than you? I introduce you to the Poygoodes.Reviewed by Eraina B. Tinninof The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers

Dirty indeed By Amanda Richards If this book is indeed inspired by actual events, one can only hope that the author is guilty of extreme exaggeration, or that the story has been embellished as it was passed along. Not for the squeamish, this book is about some of the most unpleasant people you can imagine, times two. When Maebelle Hawkins decides to find herself a rich, handsome husband, nothing stands in her way - not common sense, not advice from her friends, not the well being of her children, and especially not the fact that the man she chooses is already married. What she doesn't want to accept is that Rufus Poygoode, the man she loves, is a mentally disturbed, emotionally scarred, heartless, cruel scoundrel, who is using her to avenge wrongs committed by the woman who abused him as a young man. Rufus is a wealthy land owner and farmer, who also owns a "juke house" and brothel, and even though she is warned not to put her daughters in his care, she selfishly and blindly pursues her dream at the expense of her family.Once under Rufus' control, she loses all dignity, self-respect and worst of all, her family's freedom, as he uses her and her daughters to produce slave labor for his farm. Amazingly, the entire community is aware of what is going on, but no-one does anything to assist the children, their only salvation coming when Rufus is forced to allow them to attend school.Unfortunately for Rufus, one of his offspring makes good use of her education, and when he goes too far by denying her college dream, she takes action to make him relinquish control. While the book gives every sordid detail of the harsh realities of life at the Poygoodes, it is marred by repetition and grammatical errors, and sometimes offers more information than is needed to get the point across effectively. The ending also could have used a little tweaking.Obviously a writer of great talent and passion, Ms. Weaver should consider more effective editing for her next two books, which I understand are already underway. This one is rated 3.5 stars.Amanda Richards, June 26, 2005

'Somayyeh' is the story of a beautiful and determined young woman whose quest for love, freedom and happiness pits her against religion-based doctrines of male superiority and an uncompromisingly misogynistic culture. Born into a wealthy family in the Iranian city of Shiraz in 1972, Somayyeh grows to womanhood as revolution brings a fundamentalist Islamic regime to power and a futile war with neighbouring Iraq rages for eight bloody years. When her marriage is destroyed by her husband's reckless infidelity, Somayyeh struggles to come to grips with the harsh realities of divorce while remaining a devoted mother to her only child. But her divorce turns out to be a gateway to a new life. Somayyeh's tale not only inspires but it also provides precious insights into the position of women and the impact of Sharia law in today's Iran.

But because I am from an immigrant family, it left me wanting to know more about the next stage of Somayyeh’s life. As a woman reader I would like to hear in more depth her growth as a woman within an Australian context after her first 37 years in Iran. My parents like many migrants did not notice the subtle changes as they happened but after 10 to 20 years in Australia, there were the changes staring them in the face. I would also like to know more about Ghazal’s life journey. I am a fan of David Morisset’s descriptions. He is definitely a poet of the beauty of the natural world. The chapter in Ramsar is alive and I can see his hand in this. Chapter XVIII was interesting for me because I am fascinated by the history of Iran.

When Adrianne found out she was pregnant eight years ago, she made the decision to leave Bible school and raise her child alone. Staying would have prevented her boyfriend from fulfilling his God-appointed mission in life. But every day since, she has regretted her decision. Chris - rejected, confused, and heartbroken - finished school and soon found himself in Nicaragua, loving life as a missionary. But the void left by Adrianne's unexplained departure remains.

When Chris returns to the States for a friend's wedding, is his unexpected meeting with Adrianne a coincidence or a "God incidence?" Can they put aside the past and embrace a future together as a family?
