When fall rolls into winter, most sports fans in Nebraska long for spring football. But Coach Tim Miles has given hibernating fans a reason to cheer through winter for the first time in twenty years. Since taking over the men’s basketball program in 2012, Miles has gone from being relatively unknown outside college coaching circles to a big name on the national stage as an up-and-coming, funny, and fan-friendly college coach.

Miles scores big with Nebraska’s fans with his social media acumen—he tweets during halftime—and his fan interaction—he applied (and failed) to become the leader of the student section at Pinnacle Bank Arena. But on the court and in practice, Miles is all about winning. His combination of toughness, togetherness, and humor has rejuvenated Nebraska basketball.

Nebrasketball provides a full-access account of Tim Miles’s path to Nebraska and his team’s inaugural season in the $186 million Pinnacle Bank Arena. With full access to Miles and the team, Scott Winter provides basketball fans with an intimate look at a rising star in college basketball, detailing what it’s like to coach an NCAA men’s program today with all of its triumphs and struggles, along with Miles’s larger story as a transformational coach who has made Nebraska basketball, and other college programs, relevant. The book also shows the small-town legacy and tenacity that created Miles, including his mother’s prodding, his benching as a college player, and his significant history of losing, which he claims was his most important mentor.

Review "Anyone valuing the lessons derived from hard work, diligence, and persistence during adversity will enjoy this book."—J. Kemper Campbell, Lincoln Journal Star (J. Kemper Campbell Lincoln Journal Star 2015-10-04)“What separates this book from many of the others that have been written about college basketball is that there are countless behind-the-scenes stories that illustrate how Miles molded himself into a big-time coach.”—Grand Forks (ND) Herald (Kevin Schnepf Grand Forks [ND] Herald 2015-05-12)“Nebraska coach Tim Miles is a rising superstar running a once-beleaguered program that is rising right along with him. . . . [Scott Winter] has crafted a riveting, behind-the-scenes look at how Miles is doing it and all that has made [him] who he is. It is an insider’s view full of color and detail and the raw workings of a program that has captured the hearts of not just Nebraska fans but all of college basketball.”—Shelley Smith, ESPN and SportsCenter correspondent (Shelley Smith 2015-03-05)“Scott Winter gives us an inside look at one of the Huskers’ most exciting seasons [2013–14] in recent history—a season worth reliving again.”—Kevin Kugler, play-by-play television broadcaster for Big Ten Network college basketball and radio voice of Sunday Night Football for Westwood One Sports (Kevin Kugler 2015-03-05)“[It’s] a Season on the Brink type of book. . . . Absolutely fascinating and a must-read.”—Dan Dakich, ESPN color analyst and radio host and former NCAA coach (Dan Dakich 2015-03-13)“I really appreciate Tim Miles’s candor. I interview coaches all of the time and I look forward to speaking with Tim because he’s not going to sugarcoat his words. He is genuine, refreshing, and thoughtful in this book! Pick it up!”—Stephen Bardo, Big Ten Network analyst and former Big Ten defensive player of the year for the Flyin’ Illini (Stephen Bardo 2015-05-08)

Durham I have been anxiously waiting for this book to come out since I found out it was in the works. I can say it was well worth the wait. Anyone wanting to know what it's like behind the scenes and the challenges faced in transitioning a college sports program from a losing to a winning tradition will thoroughly enjoy this book. The author does a great job capturing the emotional highs and lows that this team and coaching staff experienced during this magical season and it is quite clear that the coaching staff provided him unprecedented access to all aspects of the program. I literally could not put this book down even though I knew how it ended. :)

Crawford This is an excellent book that gives you an inside look at the Huskers' 2013-14 basketball season. The author was embedded with the team and was granted full access by Coach Miles. It's almost like you're in the locker room with the team or present at their practices. It's reminiscent of John Feinstein's classic book "A Season on the Brink" which featured Bob Knight and Indiana. I would highly recommend this book to any fan of Nebraska and college basketball fan.

7 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Nebraska Basketball? By J. K. Campbell To be honest, my expectations for this book were minimal. As a Nebraska basketball aficionado for decades I had been programmed at setting my bar quite low and when I noted that it had been written by an NU professor and published by the University of Nebraska Press I expected a thinly disguised public relations piece. I have been personally acquainted with each semi-successful coach at NU since Moe Iba except for Tim Miles. He had been portrayed by the media as a sort of au courant Fred Rogers and a "Season on the Brink" type book about him seemed to promise a rather boring ride. I was absolutely wrong. Author Scott Winter, who is no longer an employee at NU, was able to draw me in to the high pressure world of intercollegiate sports and make me understand the difficulties coaches must face daily in keeping modern athletes motivated by their team's outcomes. Not only Miles, but all the members of his entourage were fleshed out by the book's end and their fates were more compelling than the actual outcome of the season ( which I, of course, already knew). Coach Miles was revealed to be a much more flawed and nuanced person than the public has been led to believe and consequently the reader is truly moved by the vicissitudes of his season. One does not have to care about Nebraska or basketball to appreciate the value of hard work, family, and persistence in the face of adversity portrayed within the pages. Anyone who likes to root for the underdog or who demeans the role which sports play in our culture should read this book.

Basketball's Greatest Stars, by Michael Grange

Review [Review of earlier edition:] Was Magic Johnson better than Larry Bird? How does Shaquille O'Neal compare to Wilt Chamberlin? Hoops fans will quibble with the author's ranking of the sport's 50 top players, past and present. But even casual readers will thrill to the dazzling court-action photos and be enlightened by the thoughtful essays on the superstars and moments that have defined the NBA. (Neil Pond American Profile 2010-12-05)[Review of earlier edition:] Photo-laden showcases of a sport's greatest players are fairly commonplace, but this one, compiled by Canadian sportswriter Grange, stands out from the rank and file for several reasons.... Best of all, though, are the photos; beautifully reproduced, the four-color images jump off the pages, showing the various stars in signature shots... A sweet combination of superb browsing and surprisingly substantive commentary. (Bill Ott Booklist)[Review of earlier edition:] Typical of many Firefly books, this is a colorful, picture-driven reading experience. Don't expect an exhaustive history of the NBA, but an interesting summary of stars and teams. ... Recommended for fans of the NBA who seek a quick reference to the best players the game has ever seen and for all libraries collecting accessible and colorful basketball books. (Todd Spires, Bradley University Library, Peoria, I Library Journal 2011-01-15)[Review of earlier edition:] Detailed profiles of the 50 players the author believes are the greatest and most exciting in the history of the game, including career highlights of superstars Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Kobe Bryant, as well as players in the "Best of the Rest" section, from Steve Nash to Isiah Thomas. Included is a list of franchises and a chart of NBA Finals history. Illustrated with exciting action shots. (Mary Ann Grossmann Pioneer Press Saint Paul Minnesota 2010-12-10)[Review of earlier edition:] This beautiful volume presents the sportswriter's selection of basketball greats from all eras, a concise history of the game, profiles of the franchises, and even coverage of international basketball, as well as stats on each featured player, a remarkable effort for a game that originally "featured only 13 rules." Grange is a colorful writer, and his examination of the development of gurus, consultants, and the science of success is fascinating. Magic Johnson is described as "[a] late bloomer who was off the radar at the University of Massachusetts...defining the rebel league with his majestic flights, the signature red-white-and-blue ball a grapefruit in his outstretched hands." Speaking of failing to stop Michael Jordan from scoring 63 points in a playoff game, Larry Bird said, "That was God disguised as Michael Jordan." ... Jump for joy on this one. (Publishers Weekly 2011-01-07)[Review of earlier edition:] Basketball fans will find all kinds of interesting information in this book. It will appeal to readers at the junior high and senior high school levels who are involved in the sport or just have an interest in it. (Victoria Pennell Resource Links)[Review of earlier edition:] Basketball's Greatest Stars is a collection of 5O profiles of some of the greatest players in the game, from Bob Cousy and Bob Pettit to Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Grange divides them in the "Best of the Best" and the "Best of the Rest." given over to players who, despite their great talents, never quite made superstar status -- Dave DeBusschere, Elvin Hayes, Pete Maravich, and John Stockton. And it's loaded with great game images of high-flying, slam-dunking players. (James D. Watts Jr. Tulsa World 2010-12-19)

'The maddest 12 months of my life. The journey starts with an oddball race up an American mountain and ends with me checking myself out of hospital with a broken back. Again …'As Guy’s Latvian grandfather frequently reminded him, ‘When you dead, you dead’. So before it’s all over, Guy Martin is making the most of the time he’s got. In this past year alone, Guy has raced the Isle of Man TT and finished on the podium; bike trekked through India; competed in solo 24-hour bicycles races; flown a stunt plane; broken a go-kart speed record down a French mountain and attempted to break the motorcycle land-speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats. And he’s done all this around his day job as a truck mechanic. But let Guy tell you about it himself: ‘This book starts in a Transit, ends in a Transit, and in between I’ve raced a few pushbikes, raced a few motorbikes and got a fair few stories to tell you.’ Spot on.

Thoroughly Dislikeable Bloke By DJM I used to really admire Guy Martin and read and enjoyed his autobiography, bought the T-shirts, etc. I bought this book from his web store directly to get it "signed" with a thumbprint (he couldn't sign with a pen due to a recent crash). Unfortunately as this book progressed I began to dislike him more and more.Guy is starting to really sound like a prima donna with double standards. There is a lot of admissions about things being staged for his TV show amongst a lot of criticisms of other riders being fake or up themselves. He laughs at fans who "dress up like they think real racers should" without realizing his often mentioned endorsement deal with his helmet and leathers supplier only exists due to this copycat effect. Most of all I just got sick of him complaining about how much he hates the fans and the attention when everything he does now is publicity (TV, books, etc). There are plenty of people riding Pikes Peak without TV crews following them, so it is possible to do such things without a retinue.I know he has always had his detractors but I was never in that camp. However, with this book. He shows very little respect to the people who put him where he is, says very (unwarranted) disparaging things about other widely respected riders and comes across as a thoroughly dislikeable person. It's very hard to finish an autobiography when you think the author is a pillock and I gave up a couple of chapters from the end.

Complex, prickly and fiercely independent, Peter Roebuck became known as a first class cricketer in England, rose to fame internationally as a writer and broadcaster and ultimately divided his time between Australia and South Africa.

His long-standing feud with one of the biggest names in the sport was as infamous as it was rancorous. He engendered a widespread and loyal following for fearlessly wading into controversies – match-fixing, corruption, rotten governments – that left him exposed and vulnerable. At the end, he was accused of sexual assault and the nature of his death was horrific.

In this uncompromising investigation that spans multiple continents, and features unflinching testimonies from the likes of Steve Waugh, Rahul Dravid, Mike Atherton, Gideon Haigh, Ian Chappell, Jonathan Agnew and members of the Roebuck family, the authors have pieced together the fragments of an often brilliant yet uneasy life – and reveal how it all unravelled.

'In many ways, he was at his happiest talking about and writing about the game. It was the rest of life he didn't quite master.' The Times

Tim Lane is a broadcaster and columnist with extensive experience in the electronic and print media. He worked alongside Peter Roebuck at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation for twelve years.

Elliot Cartledge is a writer and editor from Melbourne, Australia who has written extensively about sport, music and travel across the globe. This is his third sports book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Outstanding Attempt to Resolve the Unresolvable By Tony A fine piece of work dealing fairly with circumstances that can probably never be resolved. The authors approached the life of this brilliant, but tragic, man with compassion but also with a journalist's pen. Had Peter Roebuck's case gone to a jury, I (along with the authors, I suspect) would not wanted to have been on it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Highly Recommended - A great read By S. Stevens Extremely well written - not that I would expect anything less from Tim Lane! Very balanced, and presented all (known) sides & opinions of Roebuck, to the point where you knew a lot more about him, but are left unsure whether you really know anything more! Just a shame we may never have a proper inquest into his death.
