When fall rolls into winter, most sports fans in Nebraska long for spring football. But Coach Tim Miles has given hibernating fans a reason to cheer through winter for the first time in twenty years. Since taking over the men’s basketball program in 2012, Miles has gone from being relatively unknown outside college coaching circles to a big name on the national stage as an up-and-coming, funny, and fan-friendly college coach.
Miles scores big with Nebraska’s fans with his social media acumen—he tweets during halftime—and his fan interaction—he applied (and failed) to become the leader of the student section at Pinnacle Bank Arena. But on the court and in practice, Miles is all about winning. His combination of toughness, togetherness, and humor has rejuvenated Nebraska basketball.
Nebrasketball provides a full-access account of Tim Miles’s path to Nebraska and his team’s inaugural season in the $186 million Pinnacle Bank Arena. With full access to Miles and the team, Scott Winter provides basketball fans with an intimate look at a rising star in college basketball, detailing what it’s like to coach an NCAA men’s program today with all of its triumphs and struggles, along with Miles’s larger story as a transformational coach who has made Nebraska basketball, and other college programs, relevant. The book also shows the small-town legacy and tenacity that created Miles, including his mother’s prodding, his benching as a college player, and his significant history of losing, which he claims was his most important mentor.

Durham I have been anxiously waiting for this book to come out since I found out it was in the works. I can say it was well worth the wait. Anyone wanting to know what it's like behind the scenes and the challenges faced in transitioning a college sports program from a losing to a winning tradition will thoroughly enjoy this book. The author does a great job capturing the emotional highs and lows that this team and coaching staff experienced during this magical season and it is quite clear that the coaching staff provided him unprecedented access to all aspects of the program. I literally could not put this book down even though I knew how it ended. :)

Crawford This is an excellent book that gives you an inside look at the Huskers' 2013-14 basketball season. The author was embedded with the team and was granted full access by Coach Miles. It's almost like you're in the locker room with the team or present at their practices. It's reminiscent of John Feinstein's classic book "A Season on the Brink" which featured Bob Knight and Indiana. I would highly recommend this book to any fan of Nebraska and college basketball fan.

As a Nebraska basketball aficionado for decades I had been programmed at setting my bar quite low and when I noted that it had been written by an NU professor and published by the University of Nebraska Press I expected a thinly disguised public relations piece. I have been personally acquainted with each semi-successful coach at NU since Moe Iba except for Tim Miles. He had been portrayed by the media as a sort of au courant Fred Rogers and a "Season on the Brink" type book about him seemed to promise a rather boring ride. I was absolutely wrong. Author Scott Winter, who is no longer an employee at NU, was able to draw me in to the high pressure world of intercollegiate sports and make me understand the difficulties coaches must face daily in keeping modern athletes motivated by their team's outcomes. Not only Miles, but all the members of his entourage were fleshed out by the book's end and their fates were more compelling than the actual outcome of the season ( which I, of course, already knew). Coach Miles was revealed to be a much more flawed and nuanced person than the public has been led to believe and consequently the reader is truly moved by the vicissitudes of his season. One does not have to care about Nebraska or basketball to appreciate the value of hard work, family, and persistence in the face of adversity portrayed within the pages. Anyone who likes to root for the underdog or who demeans the role which sports play in our culture should read this book.
