In fact, it is a long time ago, and well beyond the memory of many pro football fans. While acclaimed sports author Keith Dunnavant’s new work, Montana: The Biography of Joe Cool is a terrific look at perhaps the greatest of all quarterbacks, not merely giving us the nuts and bolts of a great career and four Super Bowl rings, what separates it is his telling exactly why and how Montana was great.Dunnavant is like a great baseball manager – think Tony LaRussa or Joe Torre – who presides over a team filled with superstars. But as those in the know . . . know, even if you pencil in names like Rickey Henderson or Derek Jeter, you can still screw things up. Just ask Butch van Breda Kolf, who managed to lose with a Lakers team featuring Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain, all in their primes. In Dunnavant’s case, he has written of superstars: Bear Bryant, Bart Starr, now Joe Montana. He has not screwed it up.The highlight of Montana is the author’s description of the 1981 season, and in this he has done what great writers do; he has taken us there. We can smell the eucalyptus trees at Golden Gate Park and the stale beer at good ol’ Candlestick. We can hear the cheers and the background noise.Dunnavant spent some time on the West Coast in the 1980s, but he is a Southern man who specializes in Alabama grid heroics, yet he well describes just what made western Pennsylvania football tick before the coal mines closed; what fall Saturdays were like in South Bend when the Fighting Irish were still the best of the best; and of course how a frail kid dealt with pressures, coaches, and competitors on his way from Pennsylvania to Notre Dame and onto the 1981 49ers, a team with no history of success, coached by an unknown practically drubbed out of the game by Paul Brown, playing in a stadium described by writer Roger Angell as a “festive prison yard.”It was the fall of ’81, Ronald Reagan’s first year in office. It seems almost black-and-white in the mind’s eye, but Dunnavant colorizes it. First, he tells us about lazy Sunday afternoons at Big Rec Park, where semi-pro baseball teams played on weekends. It is practically a Chicago song; the fields awash in sunshine, a kind of Shangri-la of greenery rising out of the morning fog. Then, the sound of street vendors and ice tream trucks, eventually drowned out by the voice of Don Klein, venerable play-by-play man of the 49ers, heard on transistor radios, describing touchdown passes by Montana amid cheers from the park faithful. Previously oblivious to the ‘Niners, now these people were, week-by-week dedicated pro football fanatics.Dunnavant takes his time painting this picture, like a good film director willing to invest in character development. Before he gets to the Catch, the Genius and the Super Bowl, he tells of a Rolling Stone concert that October held at the ‘Stick, with Mick Jagger practically making love to a young lovely on stage. He gives us background music for the Bay Area, which was distinctly Journey and Huey Lewis replacing the old Sausalito acid rock. He gives us the socio-politics of sports, the 49ers transforming a city from a dirty, corrupt Dirty Harry laughing stock, perpetually dominated by Hollywood, the Rams, the Dodgers, the Trojans, and the Bruins; suddenly courtesy of Joe Montana and the 49ers, they are a city on the move: Silicon valley, political power shifting to the north post-Reagan, amidst sports dominance.Then, as torrential rains abated, giving way to sunshine as the 49ers defeated Dallas and Cincinnati in January of 1982 to give the City its first ultimate title in any sport, he takes us to Union Street, the “triangle” where pretty girls adorn happening bars and San Francisco celebrated. For those who experienced it, the city of San Francisco had never looked like that before, and it was changed forever.The rest of Montana is solid. It particularly delves into Montana’s testy relationships with coaches, which was always fraught with tension from high school to Notre Dame, even with Walsh. Who was responsible for all this success, Walsh the Genius or Montana the superstar? Then there is Montana’s rivalry with Steve Young, the big, tall, Christian stud who finally “elbowed” him out of a job.It is all here, it is colorful, and a must-read.Steven Travers is a USC graduate who saw Joe Montana play for Notre Dame vs. the Trojans, and numerous times with the 49ers. Great Book about a Remarkable Player By citadelpride As someone who has followed the NFL for more than 50 years, I believe Keith Dunnavant has done an excellent job in painting a very definitive picture of one of the all-time great quarterbacks. When Joe Montana was playing, I was busy following various athletes in several sports. I'm not sure I understood how great Montana was, until I read MONTANA. This book put it all together for me, allowing me to realize what a magnificent career he truly had. Montana's playing career evolved like a slow-moving tornado. There were plenty of times when it might have ended, but he kept battling. A lot of athletes quit too early but Montana got the maximum amount out of his talent, and MONTANA does a great job of sketching his personal drama against the backdrop of a very interesting time in pro football. Read it. You will love it.

Exceptional By Kim Distel I very much enjoyed this book and found that in offering so much (history, clearly explained; excitement; lessons in determination and patience; insight into the character of certain regions of the country), the book has an appeal that reaches not only fans of Joe Montana and football in general, but also a broader audience. The book is beautifully crafted and structured—exceptional in the careful selection and placement of detail and in the clever use of language, and very effectively paced. A true pleasure to read.

I like the author introduces the different bodybuilding positions for different parts of your body. Here you will find the step-by-step, easy to follow muscle building process that will help you to build more muscle, strength and pack on the lean muscle mass. This book is an excellent manual on Body Building. The workout programs included are comprehensive. . I can't wait to try and follow everything that was written here. I was especially inspired by adapting more about the regular oversights that we make regarding Body building.

By Ratmammy IN HER PRESENCE: A HUSBAND'S DIRTY SECRET by Nancy WeaverMay 6, 2005This is the story of several generations of sexually and emotionally abused people, all under the hands of one man, Rufus Poygoode. He was raised by an aunt who sexually abused him as a boy, and it is no surprise that it is continued down to the next generation. While the focus of the book is on this man who has no qualms about the pain and suffering that he hands down to his children and grandchildren, it is also on the persons that are abused.The story starts with the introduction of Rufus and Maebelle Hawkin's. She happens to be an opportunistic type of woman, not having any scruples about stealing men from her friends or sisters. In this case, Rufus is married, and when he decides he wants to make Maebelle his own, he convinces her that he and his wife are working on the divorce, which is not true at all. Through lies and deception, he gets her in his bed and she becomes his common-law wife.What he does to her and her daughters is beyond words. Nancy Weaver tells the tale of an abusive man and those that live under his roof. The first half of the book details how Maebelle ends up with Rufus, and she's not quite the victim in the beginning, as she helps get rid of his wife Charlotte, who lives in fear of her life and is glad to be rid of him. When Maebelle's daughters tell their mother of the sexual abuse they are receiving at their stepfather's hands, Maebelle doesn't do a thing. At times she even thinks her daughters are jealous of her, and are trying to steal him from her.Rufus' plans for Maebelle and her daughters were downright evil. I won't go into detail here as it may be a bit too much of a spoiler. But he is definitely not one that cares how others feel, and is always out for himself.While Weaver's story had good intentions, I found this book a tad over done, with most of the characters merely caricatures of black people. The time frame was the 1950s, but the author was inconsistent at times (she starts the book out in the late 1950's, but further into the story, it is only 1950. It could have been a typo, or she merely got her time frames wrong). The book also needed a lot of editing, with quotation marks in the wrong places and too many commas in other instances. While the story itself had a message, I think the plot could have been edited down a lot, with corrections made to facts that were inconsistent.The topic of abuse is a heavy duty one and the author wanted to write a story about how people in hardships overcome and eventually will rise above, but the book needed a lot of work. The author has potential and I hope that with her second novel she will grow into an even stronger writer.

We meet a family that's bound together by control, manipulation and abuse. You think you have it bad? You have no idea.Maebelle Hawkins is a divorced mother of six children. She is still young, very pretty but barely making ends meet. After her divorce, she moves to Derriene Crossing in hopes of finding the perfect husband. Her first marriage didn't work out, but she still believes her ideal man is out there. She meets Rufus Poygoode, a very rich and good looking farmer. They date briefly and he proposes marriage to her. She graciously accepts and believes her life and her children's life will make a turn for the better. It will make a turn, but nothing like she expects.Rufus Poygoode is a very rich man with a deep dark secret. He was raised by his surrogate mother, Olga Berry. What Olga did to him while growing up, you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Rufus believes that Maebelle is Olga's estranged daughter and is set on paying back his vendetta on Olga with Maebelle and her children.Maebelle realizes her dreams are nowhere near coming true the day Rufus holds a gun to her head and calls her Olga Berry. She tries to convince him she has no idea who Olga Berry is, let alone related to her. But nothing she says convinces Rufus that she doesn't know Olga and from that point on she is treated with cruel and unusual punishment. Her children suffer along with Maebelle and they grow up resenting her. What is Rufus' dirty secret? Can Maebelle escape the cruel abuse and save herself and her children?Set in the 1950's and inspired by real events, IN HER PRESENCE will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. You will be angry and sad while witnessing the abuse Maebelle and her children endure. My heart went out to the Poygoode family and being the person I am I wanted to help them. Dirty indeed By Amanda Richards If this book is indeed inspired by actual events, one can only hope that the author is guilty of extreme exaggeration, or that the story has been embellished as it was passed along.Not for the squeamish, this book is about some of the most unpleasant people you can imagine, times two. When Maebelle Hawkins decides to find herself a rich, handsome husband, nothing stands in her way - not common sense, not advice from her friends, not the well being of her children, and especially not the fact that the man she chooses is already married.What she doesn't want to accept is that Rufus Poygoode, the man she loves, is a mentally disturbed, emotionally scarred, heartless, cruel scoundrel, who is using her to avenge wrongs committed by the woman who abused him as a young man. Rufus is a wealthy land owner and farmer, who also owns a "juke house" and brothel, and even though she is warned not to put her daughters in his care, she selfishly and blindly pursues her dream at the expense of her family.Once under Rufus' control, she loses all dignity, self-respect and worst of all, her family's freedom, as he uses her and her daughters to produce slave labor for his farm. Amazingly, the entire community is aware of what is going on, but no-one does anything to assist the children, their only salvation coming when Rufus is forced to allow them to attend school.Unfortunately for Rufus, one of his offspring makes good use of her education, and when he goes too far by denying her college dream, she takes action to make him relinquish control.While the book gives every sordid detail of the harsh realities of life at the Poygoodes, it is marred by repetition and grammatical errors, and sometimes offers more information than is needed to get the point across effectively. The ending also could have used a little tweaking.Obviously a writer of great talent and passion, Ms. Weaver should consider more effective editing for her next two books, which I understand are already underway. Somayyeh, by Mariam ShiraziAbout the Author Mariam Shirazi is the pen name of an Iranian businesswoman who left her country to live in Australia in the early years of the twenty-first century. David Morisset is the pen name of an Australian writer who has previously published novels about Iran. A former diplomat, he has lived and worked in Tehran and also witnessed the uprisals which led to the overthrow of the last Shah. His poem, 'Persian Princess', was commended in the John Shaw Neilson Poetry Award (2009 Fellowship of Australian Writers National Literary Awards).

But because I am from an immigrant family, it left me wanting to know more about the next stage of Somayyeh’s life. As a woman reader I would like to hear in more depth her growth as a woman within an Australian context after her first 37 years in Iran. My parents like many migrants did not notice the subtle changes as they happened but after 10 to 20 years in Australia, there were the changes staring them in the face. I would also like to know more about Ghazal’s life journey. I am a fan of David Morisset’s descriptions. He is definitely a poet of the beauty of the natural world. The chapter in Ramsar is alive and I can see his hand in this. Chapter XVIII was interesting for me because I am fascinated by the history of Iran.
