4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. second chance romance By Roberta In a way, this could be considered a second chance romance, even though technically it was the heroine who had an unrequited crush on the hero back when they were kids. Fiona used to drool over Ben when she was a teenager, but he only had eyes for her sister and he saw Fiona just like a little sister.When they meet again, they're both grown-ups and with their own careers they've worked hard for outside the small town where they grew up. Now that Fiona is back for good and Ben has to look after his family business at least until the holidays are over, being around each other feels different and old feelings come back to the surface, while a new awareness hits Ben square in the face.I like second chance romances, especially when they're childhood sweethearts, and the fact that this is set in a small town and at Christmas was a bonus. However, I was hoping to like it just a little bit more than I did. I felt that at times the story dragged a little, with too many internal monologues and "what ifs" moments that seemed a bit repetitive at times. Although I understood the characters' indecisions about their future, both professionally and romantically, I felt that the constant wondering about what would happen once the holidays were over slowed the pace.Also, I thought that they got together a little too quickly; whereas just a few pages before they didn't want to get involved with each other, they change their mind pretty fast on that train ride... I guess it's just a pet peeve of mine, but that turned me slightly off.What I liked about the book was Fiona's clumsiness, especially when Ben was around. She always managed to do something that would make me laugh, and this made her a very relatable character.I also liked the small town setting and the camaraderie they all shared.This is book 2 in the series, but you do not need to read book 1 in order to understand.***I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review***

It is a place I'd love to be, and Donna's descriptive writing makes it easy to envision and easy to feel the cold winter weather!Fiona is back in her home town of Blueberry Cove to start her business fresh, and do what she wants to do. As she tries to settle in, she is also planning her sister's Christmas wedding. Fiona is busy, and the last person she expects to run into again is Ben, her brother's friend. The person she always secretly loved. He is an unexpected complication in her new life, because some feelings really don't go away!Ben is back in Blueberry Cove temporarily. He has family issues and a family business to deal with, and is definitely not looking for any other complications! Suddenly though the Fiona he's always thought of as just his friends little sister is looking like so much more. They have a history of teasing and name calling, haven't seen each other for a long time, and these new feelings are ruling Ben's mind.As they both struggle with issues past and present, a new kind of relationship starts to form. With angst, family interference, and the chance of a future so remote, will they take that leap of faith and take a chance on each other?Watching Ben and Fiona together as adults was an interesting journey. I liked that they already knew each other, and they have more in common in the present day than they think. Both of them are dealing with big life changes and uncertainties. I really liked both of these characters. They are both strong, independent, and caring. I liked learning about who they were and their current circumstances, their feelings, and how they were each trying to cope with such big, real life issues. I will be honest and say that I found it a bit much that there seemed to be a lot of fixation on elements of their past relationship as young teenagers, and I felt like parts of this got blown way out of proportion and took over too much of the story of Ben and Fiona. This was a bit distracting and I felt like it took away from the adults they are now. However once this was put more on the back burner, the plot was easier to fall back into and enjoy their journey to the future, what ever it might hold.I really liked Fiona's family, I felt like they really showed strength, loyalty, and love. They made me want to be part of this family! They are all very much a part of Fiona and Ben's story, and I liked how these characters are woven into the plot. They are all strong secondary characters and I can't wait to read more about Fiona's sister Kerry!Snowflake Bay is well paced and Donna's writing is smooth and easy to read. Not a typical Christmas book, Snowflake Bay is a great winter time read to curl up with that I'd recommend to any romance reader.

We find Fiona was back in her home town of Blueberry Cove. Maine [small town] for her sister Hannah's Christmas wedding and since she was now staying and opening up her new shop [Fiona McCrae Interiors]. What will happen when Fiona who was nicknamed Fireplug Fi by a a old childhood friend ....Ben who was her brothers Logan's best friend was also back in town working at his family business? There will be a lots going on in this story...from upcoming nuptials, old friends and family getting back together to even business concerns. What will happen as Ben sees Fiona as a a woman and not just 'Fireplug Fi? Will they become more than just friends as Fiona learns that Ben's become far greater than the boy she had a crush on? I loved how this author gives the reader such a well written story about this McCrae family who were truly there for each other along with some other very interesting characters that will keep you turning the pages until the end. Be ready for catching up with the Cove residents that are well developed, likable, well portrayed and believable that will keep the reader engaged in it all.This is the second novel in this series..'The Brides of Blueberry Cove #2 ....which deals mainly with Fiona and Ben. I would suggest that even though its a standalone read I would read the first series to truly understand how well this storyline is so well written. I truly loved that train ride that Ben and Fiona took during the holidays ...what chemistry, definitely leaving you saying WoW! Now, to learn just what I am talking about you will have to pick up "Snowflake Bay" to see how well this author presents it to the readers. Now, I will be ready for this next series featuring Kerry McCrae.

By Rich Harris Excellent book for the novice and that basic air rifle shooter wanting to step up into a more advanced gun. This book lays out the ins and outs of the main varieties of air rifles and allows the shooter to make an informed decision before spending hard earned money on an air rifle. I highly recommend it for my fellow powder burners wanting to step into the air gun world. It really is very different.

Simple, Unpretentious and Down-to-Earth By A Customer After reading "Wuthering Heights" (by Emily), "Jane Eyre" (by Charlotte), and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" (by Anne), I found myself slightly disappointed by the lack of passion and romanticism in Anne Bronte's "Agnes Grey". This novel truly is simple, unpretentious, and down-to-earth--and, therefore, far too easy to underestimate and undervalue.The title character is the younger daughter of a poor family, who seeks employment as a governess in order to help her parents make ends meet. This noble act of maturity on her part earns her nothing but disillusion, humiliation and hardship in the hands of the tyrannical children and over-indulgent parents of Wellwood House (Note the intriguing initials W.H., which stand for Wuthering Heights and Wildfell Hall in other Bronte books) and, later, Horton Lodge. For several chapters, Anne Bronte does not do much but--dare I say it?--complain about the lot of the Victorian governess. Though her portraits of the children and their parents were obviously drawn from reality, which certainly won sympathy from me, I wanted to tell her to "Get on with the story" many times.The plot does pick up after the artful and exasperating Rosalie Murray has her "coming out" ball. Thoughtless rather than tyrannical, Rosalie has the most well-drawn character of all of Agnes' charges, which makes her such a great foil for Agnes. Rosalie delights in thinking that she could have any man she wishes and enjoys nothing more than toying with men's hearts. When she finds out that Agnes might be in love with the curate, Edward Weston, she makes every attempt to make Mr. Weston fall in love with _her_, thinking that it would be a grand joke to make Agnes miserable. Yet it is impossible to hate her, somehow. She steals every scene she is in; half the story is truly hers.I am happy to say that both Rosalie and Agnes get what they deserve, which is, fittingly, what each explicitly asked and worked for. (Read that any way you wish--or better yet, read the book.) "Agnes Grey" has left me believing that we truly do sow what we reap and receive what we ask for.

Vodrey Anne Bronte constructs a vivid Victorian world in AGNES GREY, which isn't surprising since it's drawn so strongly on her own experiences.Agnes is a dutiful clergyman's daughter who goes into the world to seek employment as a governess in order to contribute to her family's financial well-being. Her several positions are described with deadly accuracy--the bratty children, the yapping dogs, the secretly disdainful other servants, the uninvolved parents. All are rendered here in minute and telling detail.Agnes's familial background--and the familial background of Anne Bronte, of course--makes her especially well-suited to describing a local cleric she dislikes: "His favourite subjects were church discipline, rites and ceremonies, apostolical succession, the duty of reverence and obedience to the clergy, the atrocious criminality of dissent, the absolute necessity of observing all the forms of godliness, the reprehensible presumption of individuals who attempted to think for themselves in matters connected with religion, or to be guided by their own interpretations of Scripture, and occasionally (to please his wealthy parishioners), the necessity of deferential obedience from the poor to the rich--supporting his maxims and exhortations throughout with quotations from the Fathers . . . But now and then he gave us a sermon of a different order--what some would call a very good one; but sunless and severe: representing the Deity as a terrible taskmaster, rather than a benevolent father . . . [on leaving the church, I heard] his voice in jocund colloquy with some of the Melthams or Greens, or, perhaps, the Murrays themselves; probably laughing at his own sermon, and hoping that he had given the rascally people something to think about; perchance, exulting in the thought that old Betty Holmes would now lay aside the sinful indulgence of her pipe, which had been her daily solace for upwards of thirty years; the George Higgins would be frightened out of his Sabbath evening walks, and Thomas Jackson would be sorely troubled in his conscience, and shaken in his sure and certain hope of a joyful resurrection at the last day."Bronte displays this same calm, measured, extraordinarily accurate descriptive skill throughout the novel, which more than makes up for the fact that the plot is simple and the action mostly calm and uneventful. The joys of the book lie chiefly in seeing how Bronte renders even the simplest character vividly lifelike.
16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Underrated Anne By Laura Merucci Anne Bronte is probably the least popular Bronte sister for some reason. She actually wrote two books (and Charlotte wrote four) but the only Bronte books anyone ever seems to know are Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Those are by far the most popular and have been adapted many, many times. Unfortunately given Anne's relative obscurity, there are very few adaptations of her works. There are a couple TV versions of her second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but only one of those is available on DVD and there are none at all of her first book, Agnes Grey. I think this is a real shame because I love both of Anne's books and because of this, I would say she's my favorite of the three sisters.Agnes Grey tells of the titular character's life as a governess. Her family loses their fortune in an accident and so Agnes decides to work as a governess rather than be a burden on her parents- even though they are against this idea. She first teaches extremely bratty young children (the son is a sociopath who tortures his younger sisters and small animals) and then older, more worldly children. All of her pupils are spoiled to the core, but she gets along well enough with her second family of employment.Like Jane Eyre, Agnes Grey is about a governess, but the two books are very different from each other. Agnes Grey is much more realistic, lacking all the gothic and mysterious elements. Anne based the story and characters on her own experiences as a governess, and thus all the bratty kids are very well realized. Agnes does fall in love but it's a more understated romance with a good man, but nothing like the tumultuous passion between Jane and Rochester. Anne Bronte's books are definitely the most realistic out of all of the Brontes and this one most of all. The style is the closest to Jane Austen that any of them will get, so Jane Austen fans who are not fond of Charlotte and Emily's work will probably respond more favorably to this one. It does have a moral and religious message to it but I didn't find it heavy-handed.

He is married to Michelina Dier. Residents of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, they have four adult children and are raising a black lab named Vince Lombardi Dier, who prefers to be called “Vinny.”

Eames Green and Gold Memories brought me back to the west side of Green Bay and my childhood growing up in titletown along with the author and many of his cast of characters. But I think this book is much more than Roger's memoirs. It's really more of an extended look back at growing up in a blue collar midwestern town when kids could roam much more feely and experience the kinds of adventures that are no longer possible. Roger deftly captures the pulse of a town whose collective hearts beat to the rhythm of Lombardi's championship teams and uses those teams and their success as the musical score for the real story of his own coming-of-age. Channeling equal parts Jean Shepherd and Shirley Povich, Dier invites the reader into the crazy adventures, lifelong friendships and sometime turbulent family dynamics that millions of baby boomers experienced as they all wrestled with growing up in a rapidly changing world that experienced advances in civil rights, the sexual revolution, the Vietnam war, and the assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK all made up close and personal through the new medium of television. G&GM takes you along as the author revisits all the good and not-so-good memories of school, teachers, classmates, the neighborhood gangs, the bullies, the drinking, the smoking, the music, and the sports. Back yard sports. Little league sports. City park sports. High school sports. Sneaking into the stadium to watch the game sports. But mostly it takes you along on Roger's journey into adulthood and away from Green Bay, profoundly shaped by all of it but free to become the man of his choosing.

Green & Gold Memories Become Your Own Memories By Jeff Roznowski Roger Dier and Green & Gold Memories provides an exceptional illustration of growing up and coming of age in 1960s middle America. As a product myself of Green Bay and that era, and as a Green Bay Packer fan, Roger was not only describing his memories but also my memories and likely those of many children in the pre-technology age. Roger vividly captured the simplicity of friends jumping on their bikes, marking their favorite territory and exploring, learning and growing. He also memorably dissects a child's loving and often complicated relationships with his parents and siblings, loving and fighting, defending and challenging.Intersperced within his boyhood hijinks, Roger interweaves tales of the legendary Lombardi-led Packers. What a great snapshot of history and autobiographical account of boyhood adventures culminating into adulthood. Roger has an extraordinary talent of weaving threads of memories into a fine tapestry-a colorful story of life, lessons and love. A gentle smile held my face from the first to the last word, sans a few stories in between of which you will understand upon reading. Lombardi, the Golden Years, the Packers, baby boomer real life experiences are expertly portrayed in this book. You don't need to be a Packer fan nor a resident of Green Bay to appreciate the boyhood tales and lessons learned (by the author and his readers) in this book. Each chapter is worth more than the price of this book. "...A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music used to make me smile...."

Van der Leek makes no bones about the purpose of this narrative: “We’ll be treating the 1996 disaster as a criminal investigation; and the mountain itself as a crime scene.” From this unique and fascinating vantage point the reader is dragged back into a deadly ‘storm over Everest’, one that brings readers and amateur climbers face to face with something more terrifying than the mountain itself. What are the motives of the men climbing the world’s tallest mountain? What Van der Leek manages to achieve in NEVEREST is to show the naked ambition and base morality of many of the men and women who returned from the dismal heights to a hero’s welcome. What if some of them weren’t heroes? Using the psychology ‘it takes a thief to catch a thief’ professional photojournalist and one time climber of Kilimanjaro, Nick van der Leek demystifies the heroism of climbing. “The question is whether climbing a real mountain is an authentic process towards growing ones symbolic self, and the question is whether climbing the world’s highest mountain means accessing the highest parts of the self.” Would we climb that mountain if there were no picture taken at the top? 25 of 27 people found the following review helpful. feels like the publication was rushed By Emilie Robinson Ive read over 20 books on the Everest Disaster of 1996. Obviously these cover conflicting views and opinions and I have been open to suggestions as to why certain things occured.This book was by far the worst book I have read on the disaster. It feels as if it were rushed into print to benefit from the Everest (movie) hype. Whilst it assumes the air of taking a courtroom analysis of the situation (which i thought would be interesting), it reads almost like an essay by a teenager. Im not familiar with words like 'kinda' being used in a legal sense, and the overuse of profanity as a means of description is bizarre.He over analyses sentences in other 96 writings to uncover hidden meanings and pounces on inconsistencies (admittedly there are many) Yet in his own writing there are factual errors.He quotes characters in the Everest movie as if it were recorded live on the day, and not a movie that clearly required some artistic license (epecially when it comes to conversations that occured)It seems the writers personal view towards Jon Krakauer have biased his book considerably. Personally I do not think Krakauers book is entirely accurate (how can any be, as they are all written from different perspectives) but this writer is almost obsessed with discrediting him.Finally I think the criticisms of peoples responses on the day are unfair. Guide Mike Groom is criticized for not mounting a search and yet he has just helped rescue people to the point of the South Col and actually is said to pass out once he reaches his tent. Im not sure how one is expected to organize a search party whilst physically drained to the point of passing out. Others are criticized for only searching the immediate area of the tents. The explaination many of these men give is that in blizzard like conditions they felt they would endanger their own safety in venturing further than that.I agree that ideally more could have and should have been done in some cases on the day. Certainly mistakes were made in the planning, on the day, and in the rescue. But it is impossible to determine what those scared, exhausted people were facing unless you were actually there.I think that with time and editing this could be a great book. But as it currently stands I found it a frustrating and disappointing read

By Jeff Job This is the third book I've read on the disaster and each one offers different insights on the others.I thought the Russian guide was harshly and unfairly criticized in Jon's book inferring he was cowardly and selfish for descending before the clients.This book gives info that correctly describes his actions and motives that I thought were wise and justified.What I didn't like about this book is the author using foul language and I thought at times it read like a snarky tabloid article thereby injecting his contempt on various characters in the story.Very good read and I recommend this book.

By Laura McMahon Van der Leek dissects the events surrounding the 1996 Everest tragedy and presents the facts as a lawyer would present evidence to a jury. I appreciate this style of writing as it provided me with detailed background on the individuals involved as well as a narrative, from an experienced climber, that illuminated potential catastrophic mistakes made by members from both Mountain Madness and Adventure Consultants. I have read many books regarding this climb and they all generally follow the same format, they blame one side or the other. I was relieved to see that Neverest investigated the accountability of climbers on both teams. I couldn’t put the book down. I look forward to reading the next collaboration between Nick Van der Leek and Lisa Wilson.
