Hands down, not what I expected this story to be!For lovers and followers of Lexi's books, it's so good to be back in New Hope and reconnecting with all the characters. They are growing, marrying, having babies and this book just feels like coming home. For those new to Lexi, this can be read as a standalone. In true Lexi style, the high (or low) points are reviewed to make it a complete story.Max Hallowell lives the life of a single dad with his spitfire daughter. His HEA has been out of reach after the evils of Meredith and Hanna choosing Nate. He is a sweet and caring man with a heart of gold and the body of Adonis.Dr Phoenix Reid has always been a mystery. The outsider welcomed into the New Hope circle of girlfriends. She's loyal and caring, yet distant. Now it is down to 2 single girls in the group, her and Krystal Thompson, the pressure to partner up comes from her friends.When Max comes to help Nix with a home repair, one thing leads to everything. After the fact, Nix can't believe that Max wants more. How could anyone want her? After her upbringing and the shame and guilt that she carries. After a man she loved and was engaged to dropped her on a dime when he learned about it. Especially when Max is given a chance with a movie star. So, she runs and hides. Her books are both captivating and sexy. I find her books intriguing and I have no problem sinking myself into the characters she creates and the story lines she gives those characters. Her books are fairly quick reads, but I like that because she doesn't fill the stories with unwanted information that the reader doesn't need.Playing With Fire is a book filled with mystery, suspense, angst, heartbreak, painful pasts, and some extremely sexy times ;) This book grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go. This is the first book in her newest series called the Mended Hearts. All of the books are stand-alones but have interconnecting characters. This is the second group of characters I have read from her, my first being Sam and Lizzy's story. I do find that as a reader it might be beneficial to read all the New Hope books to get the full feel of the characters and their dynamics with each other. With that said I never felt lost by not reading the other books, Lexi does a fine job filling in the blanks. Sometimes I feel like I am missing the connection between all the characters, but it doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the book.In this book we meet Nix and Max. Nix is one of the girlfriends of the other female New Hope characters. Max is the Best friend to some of the male New Hope characters. Nix's past was a unique one to me, in the sense that I have never read about this subject matter before. I don't want to say more on that because that will take away the mystery and suspense of the story. Just know that she comes from a very troubled past and her life has been in constant danger for the last 13 years. She has a tough time trusting men, which in turn led to A LOT of angst in this story. There were many times I wanted to smack her and tell her to wake up. Even though her reasons were valid, I didn't always like the way she played with Max's emotions. As for Max…..he was a saint. This man had patience in spades. I couldn't believe he continued to stick around after some of the stuff she pulled on him, but he truly did love her unconditionally!!!!I continue to like that the other New Hope characters were in this story, because they added some of the comic relief the story needed, but also great support to Nix and Max. It was great to see Lizzy and Sam's relationship continue to grow and flourish. I look forward to reading about Cade and his mystery woman.So if you like a book filled with angst, mystery, romance, suspense, and steamy scenes, then don't miss out on Nix and Max's story.

By N Miller My heart broke for Max when Hanna picked Nate, the whole time I was reading the Here and Now series I went back and forth between team Max and team Nate. I can rest easy now, knowing that Hannah made the right choice because her and Max really didn’t belong together. I absolutely love Max and Nix together!I have loved the character of Dr. Phoenix Reid from the minute she was introduced to us in the prior New Hope books. Her character, while quiet, always made me chuckle with her spunk and funny one-liners throughout the other books. I won’t lie, the skeletons in her closet are down right f**king scary! Her past freaked me out through the entire book, but her struggle and the way she handled it was fabulously written by Ms. Ryan! Although there were plenty of times in this story where I kinda wanted to jump in and shake some sense into her – I mean c’mon beautiful, swoon worthy Max Hallowell is knocking on your door and you turn him away?!“I’m not looking to rescue anyone, he says softly. But if you’re the one who needs saving, I’m happy to invest in a stallion and learn how to ride.”Max Hallowell is the prince we watch in fairytales as little girls and the Knight in Shining Armor we pray for as we get older. His character has certainly matured since we first met him and if possible I think he got a little sweeter! I saw him in a whole new light in this book though I have to say he became much more sexier and damn, who knew he had the ability to talk so dirty…. can we say melt your panties HOTT?! ☺“I’ve fantasized about this since the first time, he whispers, his voice husky against my ear. I’ve thought about how you’d look under the spray, imagined these f**king perfect legs wrapped around me as I f**ked you.”Not only do we get the great love story of Max and Nix in this book, but we are reunited with all of our favorite New Hope characters that I personally cannot ever get enough of! We also meet a couple new characters, one in particular I can’t wait to learn more about. Bring on Holding Her Close! Thanks again for an awesome read, Lexi Ryan, you never disappoint me!
